Oh-ho, cool names! Mine's Kage — and that's 'cage' with a 'k'. I know, it's awesome.
~ Kage to Antoshi, A Blond Ray of Sunshine, Part 5: Frozen Summer

Summary[]

Kage, also known as Michael, is a character in A Blond Ray of Sunshine — a Pokémon fan fiction series that takes place in a future timeline, almost one hundred years after the events of Pokémon Red and Blue. Making his debut in Frozen Summer, he is portrayed as the seemingly dopey, joke-cracking, yet dangerous member of his group, The Clique, consisting of his longtime friends, Celeste and Myst, and their leader, Ken. His appearance is that of a human mixed with the features of an Umbreon, including black fur and yellow ring patterns covering his body, Umbreon ears atop his head, and pointed, bushy tail. His background is shrouded in mystery, though it is revealed that he and his friends were all previously normal humans who went to the same school as Serenity.

Appearances[]

Frozen Summer (2019)[]

Following the lead given to them by their new Pichu friends, Poka and Chika, Antoshi, Latoshi, and Mitoshi investigate the frigid, snow-covered woods around Route 36. Curiously, they find an area completely devoid of snow. Not long after, they are encountered by Kage, who initially comes off as a harmless, airheaded jokester.

He attempts to get the siblings to leave, but when it becomes clear that they will not, he suddenly uses a mysterious, mind manipulating power that causes all three of them to suffer individual hallucinations based on their deepest fears. Antoshi witnesses visions of his family and friends dead at his feet. Latoshi believes he has been recaptured in the military base he escaped from, once again powerless and under the control of General Logan and his new partner, Lazarus. Mitoshi finds herself in the woods, alone, and returns home to find all of her friends and family have vanished without a trace.

However, the sibling trio soon discover a new power, unlocking the ability to communicate telepathically. With their new power, they deduce that they've been hypnotized somehow and work to fight to regain consciousness. Upon returning to reality, Kage uses another ability to create a shroud of darkness around them and render himself invisible. He strikes Antoshi, who soaks up the Umbreon-like young man's attacks without defending himself. After reading Kage's movements, Antoshi grabs him and renders him unconscious with a single strike to the neck.

During the fight between Antoshi and Ken, Kage and Celeste emerge from the forest to look on alongside Myst. Antoshi's speed becomes too much for Ken to deal with, and finds himself enveloped in a giant sphere of Antoshi's energy, which the boy calls Red Giant, burning Ken intensely before exploding.

While the siblings cheer Antoshi's victory, Ken plays possum for a short time before firing off a sneak attack in the form of a large, pointed icicle that catches Antoshi in the arm. Myst pleads with Ken not to continue, but Ken is too consumed with rage to listen, launching a barrage of similar icicle attacks which forces the siblings to team up and defend against them. One is deflected and buries in Ken's chest. Ken collapses, believing he's about to die, stating his farewells to his friends before falling unconscious. Antoshi, however, uses his new ability to heal with his Ki, managing to completely fix the hole in Ken's chest and revives him.

Ken is shocked that the boy would save him, and respects him for the great gesture. He and his friends understand that what he'd been saying all along about wanting a peaceful resolution was true. Just as Ken offers his friendship to them, Serenity appears and quickly recognizes the four members of The Clique as the same group that she used to know from her time in school. Ken wishes not to explain what happened to them, and she does not press the issue. She is just glad to see them again, and the two sides part ways on good terms. Within the next few days, the blizzard is completely gone and the snow begins to melt, allowing life to get back to normal after a very abnormal situation.

Powers and abilities[]

As a human-Pokémon hybrid, Kage possesses superhuman powers, somewhat similar to that of an Umbreon. While he does not directly use any moves that an Umbreon would, his Dark-type abilities allow him to manipulate ones' perception of reality, trapping them in a neverending mental prison until they eventually perish. He can also create a field of darkness around himself and his foes, using the shadows to vanish and become undetectable. However, compared to both the sibling trio and his friends in The Clique, he is extremely weak — a fact that is acknowledged later by Celeste. Antoshi soaks up multiple punches from Kage in a de-powered state and still takes almost no damage. The blond-haired boy eventually figures out Kage's attack pattern, grabs him, and renders him unconscious with a simple chop to the neck.
