“ | Boy... You think I died? No... I've been puppeteering every little action you've ever experienced! You're merely my plaything! A pawn to my plan! I hired Bowser the same way I hired you! And then, it was all entertainment. I watched you fight for that Gem. And now, it's mine. Now, you die! | „ |

~ Dedede in the recent Season 2 trailer. |
Dedede is the main antagonist of The Gem. He is an intelligent and vindictive man, manipulating people to get what he wants, and killing them when they're not useful anymore. He doesn't feel guilt, and is apathetic during most of his kills (that we've seen.) He views Mario and the others as his playthings, and finds enjoyment watching them fight over the Gem that will eventually be his.
Appearance[]
Dedede resembles a penguin-like creature dressed in royal, red finery, with his personal emblem embossed on the back of his robe. Dedede himself is rather portly, is blue-skinned and has a yellow mouth (which has been depicted as more of a beak). His irises are a blueish hue with a large white highlight in the middle, though his eyelids often change between blue eyelids or simple black dashes. He is consistently seen with his round red cap, which has a yellow or golden rim and a white ball at the top. He has blue flipper-like hands, though they are usually covered by a pair of yellow gloves.
Personality[]
As said before, Dedede is a completely apathetic killer and intelligent mastermind. He doesn't value the lives of other people, but only cares about how he can use them to benefit his schemes. He kills Bowser and Luigi seemingly on a whim, and when all is said and done, he just collects the spoils and walks away, laughing. Despite his limited screen time, he's the mastermind and orchestrator of the entire Season 1, hiring both Mario and Bowser to get the same prize. He kept his identity a secret, knowing that the two bounty hunters would fight over the Gem. He sat back and watched the whole thing play out as entertainment, and when the victor was decided, he swooped in, and tried to collect his prize (although Bowser coming back into the fight was something he didn't account for.
History[]
Background[]
Dedede's origins are completely a mystery, but we do know at some point he became a wealthy landowner, becoming someone with a vast fortune and lots of influence in the Kingdom. He was a businessman, but was also cold and conniving. Dedede became aware of a mysterious artifact known as The Gem, which was hidden away in the bank. He wanted to have control of it, but didn't know how to get it without drawing suspicion.
Season 1[]
He called the two best bounty hunters in the Kingdom. Mario and Bowser. The two were rivals, which was perfect for the plan. Dedede called both of them individually, keeping his identity anonymous and promising 100,000 coins as a reward for getting the Gem. All Dedede had to do was watch. Mario (along with Luigi and Kirby) fought Bowser and Meta Knight (Dedede's right-hand man.) The two parties, except for Meta Knight, had no clue they were hired by the same guy, and Mario and Kirby ended up victorious. Dedede comes in at the last second, revealing himself to be the client, and asking for the Gem. Bowser shows up, having seen Dedede protecting Mario, and thinks Dedede is Mario's boss (Bowser still believes he and Mario have separate bosses, so he assumes Dedede is Mario's boss, and his boss is someone else entirely.) Bowser attacks Dedede, and upon learning he doesn't have the Gem, kicks him off the balcony. Dedede is presumed dead, but he survives, only considering this a minor setback. He appears later at the end of Episode 2, shooting Bowser and taking The Gem back. Mario, Luigi, and Kirby (who are also there) are shocked, and Dedede reveals his master plan in a monologue. Then, he tries to kill all three of them. Mario and Kirby manage to escape, but Dedede shoots Luigi, killing him. Dedede then walks off, picking up the Gem and leaving. In the post-credit scene, Dedede is seen with the Gem, telling someone that his next course of action is to take over the entire Kingdom.
Season 2[]
In the time between Season 1 and Season 2, Dedede takes over the Kingdom using the Gem and declares himself King Dedede. He assumes full power and plunges the land into tyranny. A Resistance is formed to oppose him, and most likely knowing that Kirby and Mario are still alive, sends Meta Knight to kill Kirby and the AUPS (Among Us Police Squad) to kill Mario. Both of these efforts fail, and Mario and Kirby get recruited to the Resistance.
Trivia[]
- Dedede is not the King, even though Bowser calls him that in the end of Episode 1. This has changed in Season 2, where he takes over the kingdom, becoming King.
- Meta Knight was the only one who knew about Dedede's plan, only siding with Bowser for the sake of appearances.
