King Ghidorah is the main antagonist of the Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) fanfiction Abraxas, written by Hrodvitnon.
It is an ancient, immortal, billions-of-years-old draconic Titan of extraterrestrial origin with immense bio-electrical, biokinetic, regenerative and mutagenic abilities.
Each of its three heads has a markedly different personality, and they're akin to separate minds that are intrinsically linked to a single body and nervous system - the middle head (Ichi, Eldest Brother, the First); the right head (Ni, Elder/Younger Brother, the Second); and the left head (San or San-2, Youngest Brother, the Third).
Ghidorah is responsible for Dr. Vivienne Graham's presumed death and her transmutation into a new hybrid Titan, after Ichi devoured her during Ghidorah's Antarctic awakening, and the left head which was ripped off at Isla de Mara carried her revived body and transmutated her into a part-Ghidorah creature, which in turn leads to the gradual redemption of the San consciousness from that head. San later informs Vivienne that Ghidorah's death by Godzilla at Boston is only a setback from Ghidorah's point of view, as the three-headed dragon has died before and will always eventually regenerate in the future so long as any piece of it remains intact anywhere. Alan Jonah in the meantime conducts experiments on Ghidorah's tissue from San's old head, giving rise to new threats in the forms of the Many and the Zmeyevich.
Personalities[]
Having been driven to insanity, apathy and then sadism long ago, Ghidorah makes its primary mission in life to be flying across the cosmos, attacking every living planet or moon it finds until it's become the unquestioned apex lifeform, wiping out all other life and reshaping the world in its own image, before it moves on. After the proliferation of the Many and the Zmeyevich on Earth, however, Ghidorah becomes interested in playing God with its abominable new "children" by creating more monstrosities in its own image.
Each of Ghidorah's three heads isn't so much an extension of a singular being as they are three separate, intrinsically-connected minds sharing a body.
Ichi, the middle head (called "eldest brother" by the other two), is the most sadistic, vindictive and cunning head. He despises Vivienne Graham intensely and wants to make her suffer a far worse fate than death after she unwittingly stirred up his worst memories by observing the frozen Ghidorah. He also despises and abuses the Youngest Brother head more than the Elder Brother. He can be superficially sophisticated.
Ni, the right head (called "younger brother" by Ichi and "elder brother" by the left head) is the most battle-oriented head, and he acts more akin to a violent, blunt instrument compared to Ichi's calculated malice. He submits to the eldest brother's authority, sometimes begrudgingly, but he isn't as submissive to him as the left head is. The middle head's influence keeps the right head's violent impulses in check and keeps him from going completely and self-destructively out of control. He associates virtue with weakness the most out of the three heads. He initially cares the least about Vivienne of all the heads, though he still hates her in a derisive manner.
Both the "elder" two heads despise the left head, calling him "slow", "weak" and "useless", and they physically abuse him, although the middle head is the worse of the two to him.
San or his regrown clone San-Who-Could-Have-Been (better known as San-2 out of universe by readers, called "youngest brother" by the other two heads), is the most childlike, inquisitive and the least hateful head. Unlike the other two heads, he's initially highly curious about Vivienne and develops a fondness for her like a child towards its favorite toy, happily taking her into his head after Ichi eats her, and taking care of transmutating her into a Ghidorah-like creature with himself as her new second head after San's original head issevered at Isla de Mara. While the version of San who is attached to the new hybrid Titan as Vivienne's new "brother" undergoes character development and eventually becomes a hero under her influence, the other copy of San's consciousness from his old head, San-Who-Could-Have-Been or San-2, is the same as San was before he fell fully under Vivienne's influence.
Trivia[]
- Hrodvitnon stated that she imagines each of the three Ghidorah heads' telepathic voices as heard by Vivienne Graham sound like the following:
- Ichi/Eldest Brother/The First: The Shadow/Zynbel from Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.
- Ni/Elder Brother/The Second: Chaos Lord from Dawn of War II: Retribution.
- San/San-2/Youngest Brother/The Third: Grigori from Dragon's Dogma.
- Being both a Titan and an alien one at that, lies and dishonesty are a foreign concept to Ghidorah. San once he wraps his head around the concept through Vivienne is dismissive of deceit as a non-sensical waste of mental energy. Hrodvitnon stated on her blog that Ni if he learned what lies were would similarly think nothing of deceit and would prefer to use brute honesty to psychologically torment others, while Ichi if he learned what lies were would never outright lie himself but would happily word his claims carefully to mislead in ways that psychologically torture the second party.
- Hrodvitnon also said on her Tumblr blog:
- Although the ancient Bone Singers who encountered Ghidorah frozen in Antarctica were strong of mind enough to defy Ghidorah to the end, Ghidorah can telepathically manipulate or corrupt any Bone Singer who doesn't have their guard up around it.
- Ghidorah can deactivate or at least mitigate its storm generation if it chooses to, whereas it was ambiguous whether Ghidorah's Monsterverse counterpart's storm generation was controllable or was a perpetual side-effect of its presence on Earth.
- Although Ghidorah can survive and slowly regenerate even when reduced to a single head, its heads have a limited supply of internal energy which they need to conserve and feed with external energy sources, and a severed head will slip into a coma and become inert if it doesn't conserve that energy.
- All three of Ghidorah's heads love a tough fight even if Ni is the most prominently combat-hungry of the three.
- Unlike the left head, the middle and right heads are both irredeemable as there isn't enough capacity for goodness left in them anymore.
- Gigan also exists in Abraxas, and he and Ghidorah fought and tried to kill each-other multiple times before Ghidorah came to Earth. Hrodvitnon furthermore states that Gigan's worshippers are aware of Ghidorah and terrified of it.
- Ghidorah wouldn't care if it realized it's acting just as bad as its despised first enemy the Makers, as it would rationalize the self-contradiction away.
- Vivienne Graham likely got the order of the three heads from "first" to "third" precisely right when Ghidorah was still frozen due to subliminally picking up Ghidorah's psychic emanations even then.
- Humans and other advanced human-sized civilizations all look the same in Ghidorah's eyes, because Ghidorah has encountered so many and gotten so used to wiping them out that they've muddied together in its minds.
- Ichi and Ni lack the Youngest Brother's curiosity towards humans and the Earth, but they would find the worst that humanity is capable of to be amusing if they became aware of it.
- Ni was irate when the Oxygen Destroyer crippled Godzilla because he felt no-one but Ghidorah was allowed to defeat their nemesis.
