Annoyed. But there's an issue... This Black Nebula crew. Their very defensive... and they fight for freedom. Freedom leads to anarchy, anarchy leads to... horrible destruction. Mad. I can't allow everyone to suffer. Let's go find that crew first, and give them a nice, welcoming chat.
~ King Stormlance’s intent to go after the Black Nebula.
Determined. I am King Stormlance, and this is my vow. To end all chaos, everything will be controlled.
~ Stormlance’s vow and descent into villainy.

King Stormlance is one of the three main antagonists (alongside Mika Aikawa and Xochal Reklaw) of Crystallic’s Starbound Trilogy. He serves as the final antagonist of Starbound: The Black Nebula, the overarching antagonist of Starbound: Rise of the Stargazers, and the main antagonist of Starbound: The Glitch Empire. He is the powerful king of The Glitch Empire, who wants to take over the universe and remake it into a completely peaceful world, so no harm can ever be done. While his goal is well intended, he’ll go to extreme lengths to get to that goal, to the point of being willing to destroy everything that wasn’t his territory at the end of the story, due to being unable to conquer everything. He is Moonquill’s adopted father.

Personality[]

Stormlance has always had good intentions at heart. When he was younger and unaware, he only wanted to be a good king and bring peace to his people. He was very friendly and kind. However, this all changed when his kingdom was destroyed, and he lost everyone close to him. Upon seeing wars and conflicts, Stormlance grew more bitter and disgusted, and eventually snapped. He grew determined to bring peace to the universe, intending to conquer everything. While he became more ruthless, he isn’t completely cold. He is shown to be affable and down to earth, often giving people a change to accept his ideology before doing anything aggressive. He genuinely cares about his people, and the state of the universe. He also has a sense of honour, and has standards against many things, such as torture, which he refuses to ever do.

He is a ruthless conqueror. He is willing to resort to extreme measures if it means keeping peace, so he began wiping peoples memories and inserting new ones in, sometimes changing their personalities. While it was called out for essentially being murder, he didn’t care, thinking it was the right thing to do, as he erased all negativity. He would also kill a small section of people to erase resources, which he never liked doing, but saw it as a necessary evil. He even made a threat to kill everyone close to the protectors in order to get information on the rest. He is aware that his actions are bad, but sees them all as necessary, and doesn’t really enjoy doing them.

Throughout the story, he grows more desperate. He accepts Ironwall’s idea of committing genocide on the protectors in order to stop them, and when one of his planers was liberated, he unleashed the Backup Plan, an omnicidal machine designed to detonate stars and force them into a supernova, wiping out entire star systems. He unleashed it because he saw it as a last resort, as much as he hated doing it. However, when he was fatally wounded by Moonquill, he saw the error of his ways, and felt remorse for his actions, wishing he could take it all back. He asks Moonquill to kill him and take over to be a better monarch then him.

Villainous Acts[]

  • He used the Asuterosaberu DX on the Glitch Liberator, intending to kill him out of revenge , but thanks to the sword’s special ability, he tore an astral tear, wounding the Glitch Liberator before sending him in the sword’s pocket dimension, leaving him to waste away until natural causes kicked in. While Stormlance didn’t know that would happen, he still thought he deserved it and showed no remorse. Albeit, it was justified as the Glitch Liberator caused the deaths of his family and kingdom.
    • It’s implied that he’s used the sword’s Astral Tear ability to send people into the pocket dimension to waste away until they died of starvation.
  • He reprogrammed a glitch corpse into being his royal guard, Ironwall.
  • He usurped an innocent glitch kingdom by killing their royal family, and reprogramming everyone into thinking that Stormlance was always their king.
  • He conquered over 15 star systems, and even more planets, by wiping all of their memories and inserting randomly generated new ones in place (sometimes even changing their personalities), all to make them more “peaceful” by removing certain things, and so that they would think that he was their king. This is even treated as murder, as the heroes state that it’s essentially killing people and putting new one’s into their bodies. It’s even worse considering that the process is irreversible. (MORAL EVENT HORIZON)
  • When conquering planets, he would often kill about 20% of their population to conserve resources. What’s worse is that nobody would ever have any memory of them due to the memory wipes.
  • He killed countless rebels who gained free will.
  • He was originally genocidal against more chaotic races, such as florans and novakids.
  • He gave Moonquill a chip that made her more loyal to him. While it isn’t exactly brainwashing, it comes close as if was influencing her personality.
  • He gaslighted Moonquill into thinking like him, except that he didn’t tell her about the people he was killing, and made an effort to hide it from her, due to not wanting her to become murderous.
  • He tried to have Moonquill get the Ancient Kluex Staff, to use it for his empire.
  • He had Moonquill capture both the Black Nebula and Azima’s Crew.
  • He hired Kleriya Offentus, despite how horrible of a person she is. However, he didn’t like her that much and did eventually intend to get rid of her.
  • He tried to corrupt both crews into joining him, and when they refused, he tried to have them pushed into an astral tear. When they escaped, he sent Moonquill, Kleriya and Ironwall after them.
  • He invaded Solunar Nexus, conquering about half of the star system (it would have been more if not for the evacuations), and having some killed, but hiding it from Moonquill by not killing anyone on the first planet. (MORAL EVENT HORIZON)
  • He captured Katsu, Kumiko and Lexie himself.
  • Once he captured Tatasia, Azima, Ludvig, Katsu, Kumiko, Lexie and Zaura, he made a threat to them that in 24 hours, he would execute them, and that if they didn’t tell them real information about the others whereabouts, he would kill everyone close to them. (MORAL EVENT HORIZON)
  • He tried to electrocute Moonquill when she spoke out against him and fled.
  • He accepted Ironwall’s idea of committing genocide on all protectors. (MORAL EVENT HORIZON)
  • He made a threat to the New Protectorate that if they didn’t turn themselves into him by the end of the year, he would start detonating star systems with his backup plan.
  • When he realised that he couldn’t take over the universe, he launched the backup plan, a ship with an AI that was programmed to destroy every star system that he was yet to conquer, which was essentially an act of attempted mass omnicide, as he would have destroyed most life in the universe. (MORAL EVENT HORIZON)
  • He tried to kill the protectors when they tried to stop the Backup Plan.

Quotes[]

The Black Nebula[]

(Guard: Loyal. Sir! I have all the information needed about this star system. Fun fact, it almost got destroyed today!) Shocked. Destroyed, you say? That would've been bad... (Moonquill: Nervous. So... what's with this star system thing? Is it... good?) Satisfied. It's jolly good alright!
~ Stormlance at the end of the Black Nebula.

Rise of the Stargazers[]

Proud. Well, let's see... Recently you managed to thwart a plan of some crazy old glitch who wanted to spread self-awareness to an entire village, by pretending to be one of them! They could've caused tons of destruction, but you fooled them good! And that's not even the first time you've stopped them from spreading that! Plus, your an excellent fighter... I believe you could easily take the black nebula into custody. Make sure to lure them away from Solunar Nexus!
~ Stormlance praising Moonquill.
Now since this is your first time leaving the star system, I will tell you one thing... Stern. Don't even think about spreading sentience to other glitch, or you will regret it. Your lucky I let you have yours.
~ Stormlance warning Moonquill.
Excited. She's gone and done it! She's incredible out there... *sighs* Concerned. Now that we'll soon be speaking to that crew, there is one thing I am concerned about... Ordering. Make sure that absolutely everything is stable. You were good at defeating rebels back in your day, weren't you? How about you get to relive your glory days, and make sure there's no chance of a castle outbreak, alright? Be sure to prepare the machines, I know your excellent at this kind of work... Admiral Kleriya Offentus.
~ Stormlance to Kleriya at the end of Rise of the Stargazers.

The Glitch Empire[]

Affable. I'll get to that in a minute, but for now, introductions. You've met Ironwall and my daughter, and I know your names. I'm the leader of the Glitch Empire, the Glitch King. Call me... King Stormlance.
~ Stormlance introducing himself.
Firm. Not an option! Violence isn't going to get people anywhere, it's what the problem is with this universe, it causes conflicts, which lead to wars, and in the end, it causes nothing more then complete destruction...
~ Stormlance’s views against violence.
Informative. I don't brainwash people, I rewrite them... Informal. Know what, even if we are a medieval castle, I do have access to some things! Informative. You see, what we do is this... We go to settlements, and we detain everyone there, usually by knocking them out. Then, a reprogramming station arrives. It's easier to do for glitch, but it works on most other races as well! We erase all of their memories, and implant a chip into their brain to give them new, randomly generated but consistent memories so that none of them are confused. A lot of the time, their personalities change as well. Then, we let them all back in their village. The people they once were are a thing of the past, and a new beginning arises for them!
~ Stormlance explaining how he conquers planets.
Informative. Every settlement I take over has one thing in common. They have a king named Stormlance, a royal guard named Ironwall, and a princess named Moonquill. Essentially, I reprogram monarchies to be similar to me, except without the knowledge of the universe I have. I can control each Stormlance clone, to keep an eye on things. Everything I conquer is done for a purpose. It's not for the sake of power, it's for the sake of peace. If one person controls everything, there will be no more conflicts. Ethyl, you'll like this part, there will be no discrimination! I have already taken control of about 15 star systems, and dozens more planets.
~ Stormlance explaining more about his star systems, and why he does it.
Stern. Now now, I know your going to say the miniknog. I agree. They did some rather unneeded actions to keep the apex in line. But don't worry, I'm not a tyrant. I'm not going to oppress people based on differences, nor am I going to have torture camps or any of that sort. But freedom is not as great as you claim it to be. Ever since I had free will, my life's been far more complicated and stressful. It has been for Moonquill, too... Free will is what allows people to do evil actions, so what I'm doing will end them for good. A peaceful life for everyone, with not a worry in the world...
~ Stormlance explaining more.
Dissapointed. It seems we will never see eye to eye, or brand to eye in the novakids cases... I called you all here because I wanted you and groups like you to understand, to not stop us, maybe even help us... But it seems you don't understand. Us leaders, we have to do some bad things for a greater goal. You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, can you?
~ Stormlance disappointed that the crews didn’t join him.
Stern. Now, I really don't want you to go off on your own again. Next time you want to scout, just ask. Remember that our mission is extremely important, and we can't let any distractions stand in our way. I can't have you brainwashed. Do you understand?
~ Stormlance to Moonquill after she disobeyed an order.
Determined. Both crews are going to try to stop us, but we'll all be there, and we will defeat them! Peace will come, and your lives will improve. That's all I want, really. I don't want any more chaos to destroy everything, like it did in the past...
~ Stormlance’s thoughts about fighting the crews.
Satisfied. Our work is done here. Your welcome, everyone.
~ Stormlance after invading Solunar Nexus.
Irritated. We already went over the fact your beyond reasoning. Anyways... You are all a threat to the universe, and there is no other choice. You are all going to be executed tomorrow. (Tatasia: DON'T YOU DARE TORTURE US TO DEATH!!!) Informative. Now, where did I state I would torture you? If your mother told you, she's lying. Your deaths will all be by guillotine. It's quick and effective.
~ Stormlance informing the protectors that they will be executed.
Stern. I'm helping people, your causing chaos! But, I'm going to need you to help me, a chance to redeem yourselves in your final moments. Tell me everything about the rest of your gang. Their habits, their hideout, their plans for the future. Anything that could be used to stop me, I want to know everything. (Ludvig: Fuck you dude, if your gonna kill us and expect us to betray our friends, you've got another thing coming!) Serious. Oh, no. You don't have to. But staying silent will come with a cost... If none of you fess up, or if I am fed false information, then it won't only be you who die... Threatening. Katsu, I will kill your father, I will kill your best friend. Lexie, I will kill your adopted parents. Zaura, I will wipe out your entire tribe. Tatasia, I will kill Lana and the other rebels. Kumiko, I will kill your samurai classmates and master. It won't end there, either. I will akill Tori's greenfinger, Robin's adopted parents, Tetra's parents, Mark's friends, and Ethyl's pet snugget.
~ Stormlance threatening the protectors that he will kill their loved ones if they don’t give him information about the rest of them.
Reflective. I originally had some rather racist views. I believed certain races such as florans and novakids were too chaotic to live. Thus, I originally intended to wipe them out. But after testing my devices on them, I realised... There was no problem! And, it was hypocritical to show prejudice towards certain races, when I wanted to stop conflict... It was a dark time for me. I've changed since then, and the past is in the past.
~ Stormlance explaining how he used to be racist.
Sympathetic. I understand loss, Nightheart... More then anyone could know... (Nightheart: Upset. You did this... You made them all forget me and changed them all, and my sister... She's dead, isn't she...) Reflective. I did what I had to do. But, on the bright side, it's so peaceful. You can't deny, before you woke up, you had a nice and peaceful life. We all did. I want everyone to have a peaceful life, with nothing ruining it. After you left, there was a murder. But shortly after, Ironwall arrived. He altered everyone's minds and killed some people. It was all random. In this new village, it's all improved. No murder, no dangerous conspiracies, no chaos. Soon, everywhere will be like this... How could you fight against this?
~ Stormlance to Nightheart.
Betrayed. How could you betray us, I thought you were on the right path...
~ Stormlance, shocked that Moonquill freed the prisoners.
Honest. I do it to cut down the population. More people can cause overcrowding, and then chaos... There will also be less resources. Cutting down the population preserves resources for longer. I don't enjoy it, but it has to be done. I hid it from you because I didn't want power to get to your head. I didn't want to train you to kill on a regular basis. Do you understand?
~ Stormlance confessing to Moonquill that he cuts down populations for the sake of resources.
Upset. I can't deal with this right now... *sighs* My own daughter... I made some mistakes, and they all took advantage of that, by poisoning her and taking her away from me... Their vicious snakes... Angry. I won't forgive them for this... We need to step up our game.
~ Stormlance, devastated that Moonquill betrayed him.
Excited. Being king, it sounds great! Being able to help everyone, that's what I want! I already try as a prince, I want to make sure it's all good!
~ A younger Stormlance.
Distraught. My wife, my son... No... I... I need to get out- !!!
~ Stormlance mourning the deaths of his wife and son, right before gaining self awareness.
Bitter. All this chaos, all this free will everyone has... It's turned them savage, it's made them into monsters... It all started with those criminals... My dad, my wife, my son, all gone, thanks to self awareness and freedom...
~ Stormlance growing to hate freedom.
Bitter. You took everything away from us. Everyone was living peaceful, until you plunged the kingdom into chaos. Look how that turned out! Angry. You murdered my father, my wife, my son! You don't deserve any forgiveness. Killing you is merciful, because I can't imagine anything more sickening then living in your body. Serious. But, I must thank you for one thing... You made me realise how much of the universe needs to be put under control. You are going to be a stepping stone for a new era.
~ Stormlance before attacking the Glitch Liberator.
Determined. I am King Stormlance, and this is my vow. To end all chaos, everything will be controlled.
~ Stormlance’s vow.
Grateful. So we wipe the potential problem out... I see, that's a good idea! Your an amazing right hand, you do give the best ideas... Once their out, there will be nobody to stop my plan for peace.
~ Stormlance suggesting Ironwall’s suggestion to commit genocide on the protectors.
Angry. I... Why is she... WHY DID SHE HAVE TO DO THIS?! WHY DID SHE TEAM UP WITH THOSE NO GOOD CRIMINALS?! All freedom does is bring civilisation to ruin. Laws exist to stop people doing bad things, they need to enforced! But they don't give a shit, and do it anyway. So my solution is taking those bad thoughts away, as if it was never a concept at all! Hasn't she remembered what I told her?! HOW MY KINGDOM WAS RUINED THANKS TO THEM?! HOW MY WIFE AND CHILD DIED, WHO I NAMED HER AFTER?! WHAT KIND OF GOOD PERSON ATTACKS PEOPLE UNPROVOKED?! SHE THEN CLAIMS THAT I AM DOING BAD THINGS. ALRIGHT, FAIR, I CUT DOWN THE POPULATION TO KEEP RESOURCES! BUT IT'S A NECESSARY EVIL! WHO SAID I ENJOYED IT?! I DON'T! I DO IT BECAUSE IM THE LEADER, I MAKE THE HARD DECISIONS SO NOBODY ELSE HAS TO! NOBODY'S SAD ANYWAYS, BECAUSE THEIR FORGOTTEN AFTER! WHEN I FINISH MY WORK, PEOPLE LIFE HAPPILY IN PEACE, WITH NO CONFLICT OR ANYONE TO DESTROY IT! I'M IMPROVING THE UNIVERSE, I'M MAKING IT BETTER! I'M PROTECTING EVERYONE, IS THAT SO HARD TO SEE?!
~ Stormlance’s breakdown.
Informative. So, here's my proposition... If you stop what your doing right now, and let me continue, then I will stop killing protectors. Not only that, but I will guarantee your place in our new society, where you'll all live in peace, no memory of your trauma! Sounds perfect, doesn't it? However, if you don't... Then here's what I'll do. (Suddenly, a giant ship soars into the air through the castle. It looks intimidating.) This is the Backup Plan! I... don't want to use it. But, it's capable of mass destruction.
~ Stormlance showing off the backup plan.
Threatening. That one was just barren, so nobody died there. But, I will use it on live systems if I have to. Since it's nearly the end of the year, I'll be generous in the spirit of the holidays. You all have until the 31st of December. If I see any activity of you coming into my territory, I will assume it as not co-operating. However, when that time is up, I will expect you at my castle, where you will state your decision. If you don't show up, I'll assume you deny my proposition, and I will hunt you down. Not only that, but I will begin using this on any dangerous star systems. Make the right choice, heroes.
~ Stormlance threatening the protectorate.
Shocked. You... This is why I wanted to keep you all alive. You may all be criminals but I see something good in you all. Something I saw in her... I was hoping I could bring you to my side, like she was, but... That hasn't happened. It seems your trying to persuade me into abandoning my plans. But, I can't do that. I know, my actions are wrong, but as you said, my end goal is a righteous one. When it's all over, it will be worth it, trust me. But, you seem to not be accepting to that... *sighs*
~ Stormlance refusing to back down.
Informative. I can't take places over forever. It's been hundreds of years, and I'm still not all the way there. With your recent attacks on my planets, and the corruption of my daughter, there isn't much left. I can safely say that my plan is failing. So, I have to use the backup plan. I've had it around for a while in case of emergencies, it took 15 years to make... Determined. You've shown me the top resistance. Now, I know what I must do. I will destroy every star system in this universe that I haven't controlled, using the automatic AI I made for the weapon. There will be nobody to oppose this new world anymore. It will be nice and peaceful, just like it used to be. And nobody will cause harm to anyone ever again...
~ Stormlance’s last resort of intending to destroy most of the universe.
Remorseful. Do you think I WANT to do this?! I don't, I never wanted to use this machine, it's called the backup plan for a reason, it's a last resort I've been pushed to do! I hate what's about to happen, and all I can say is that... I'm sorry, I have to.
~ Stormlance’s hesitation.
Informative. That's the security system at play. It sensed what he was doing... You all did well. But in the end, peace always wins. The new universe is being created. One of peace! All conflict will dissolve, and I'll remake everything that you've destroyed. If I have to, I'll even make more backup plans. As for you all? It will be like you were never here... Menacing. So, prepare to die.
~ Stormlance’s last words before being defeated.
Impressed. N-No... That attack... It was amazing... You put everything into it, even when it seemed like there was no hope... It was so strong, that it managed to wake me up from my nightmare... *coughs* Remorseful. My life without awareness was peaceful, until I lost my entire kingdom, including my family... I explored the universe, but only saw the bad in everything... In my anger, I created the glitch empire, and did whatever I could to spread the old peace of my kingdom to the entire world, but my methods... They were violent, and destructive, but I didn't care, I only thought of the end I wanted... I took peoples lives away and made new ones for them, in what I thought was peace, but in reality... I've become no better then the anarchists and criminals who destroyed my kingdom. I never wanted to hurt anyone, but I did... I did unforgivable things as king. My father thought I'd be a great king, who'd bring peace to everyone... *laughs* Oh, I've been a terrible king, who only ended up bringing misery. I don't want this to go on anymore. I wish I could take it all back... I just want to see my family again... Please, my daughter... One more order. I sentence myself to death... Then, take over... Do what you can to fix what I've done...
~ Stormlance feeling remorse for his actions, and his last words.
