Knuckles is the titular main protagonist of There's Something About Knuckles.
He was part of an elite group of protectors led by the Sonic the Hedgehog, who protected the city from Baron Robotnik, his robot army, and a monsterous kaiju of unknown origin. After Sonic's untimely "death" and the rise of a new kaiju, Knuckles had to take up the mantle of leader. The weighing pressure gets to him, as he takes out his frustration on his friends and is tormented by a voice in his head, who he perceives to be his inner conscious. Eventually, the truth of Sonic's demise is revealed; that Eggman was the first Kaiju, cursed from the Chaos Energy of a cracked Chaos Emerald. Sonic was tricked into lifting the curse off of Eggman, and it transferred to him, making him the Kaiju the team had been fighting.
Knuckles heads to the Baron's old lair in a desperate bid to save his friend, reluctantly letting the others come along. The entire team faces off against their former friend, fighting for their lives. It reaches a point where everyone is close to death, and Big's actual demise becomes the tipping point for Knuckles. Coerced by the voice in his head, Knuckles absorbs a part of the broken Chaos Emerald, transforming into a Kaiju himself. Sonic is freed, at the cost of Knuckles' sanity. In a blind rage, the corrupted Kaiju Knuckles goes on to kill his friends and destroy the village he was sworn to protect, and with the intervention from an alternate Amy and Tails, continue the carnage in other universes.
Appearance[]
Knuckles is an anthropomorphic red echidna with dark greyish blue eyes, wine-red fur and muscular physique. His only form of attire was a silver neckpiece and his signature white gloves. After becoming the leader, Knuckles became more involved in battles and due to his inexperience in the role, suffered many heavy scrapes. He has a huge scar over his left eye, with its iris being broken. Small scars cover the back of his head. Knuckles also lost his right arm in battle, being replaced with a cybernetic one with a blue robotic glove. Knuckles now wears blue shoulder-spikes alongside his other articles of clothing.
Personality[]
When first introduced, Knuckles is introduced as cold and harsh to his teammates. He criticizes their performance and actively encourages to push their bodies to the limit even if it causes them immense pain. Knuckles wants the group to constantly grow stronger to match the strength the Kaiju. Eventually, it's revealed that the jaded attitude is partially a front. In reality, while his lashing out is a manifestation of his lingering pressure and constant headaches, Knuckles is scared of letting everyone down, questioning how Sonic was able to handle all that pressure so flawlessly. Knuckles is also aware of how bad he treats his friends, worsening his self-hatred.
After finding out Sonic is alive, he is willing to go on a solo mission to save him. As the Sonic Kaiju attacks his friends and even kills Big, Knuckles sacrifices himself and takes on the Chaos Emerald's curse to save the rest of the friends. Unfortunately, despite the good intent, the corrupt Knuckles would go on to destroy everything. In spite of the corruption, a part of Knuckles' humanity still appears to linger within him, but it's unclear if he can overcome the monstrous corruption of the curse.
History[]
Pre-Series[]
Knuckles joined a group of protectors led by Sonic, which also consisted of Tails, Cream and Big. Together, using giant mech suits, they fought off the evil Baron Robotnik and his army of bots, as well as a Kaiju of unknown origin. Tired of the constant stalemate, Sonic went to confront the Baron alone, unaware that Tails saw him and was following behind. From Tails' account, Sonic and the Baron were killed by the Kaiju, who had also transformed and gotten far stronger than it once was. With Sonic gone, Knuckles too up the role of leader, and Silver was eventually hired to take Knuckles' old position.
Part 1[]
The Kaiju attacks the city once again, killing more and more people. While the team is able to fend off the monster temporarily, it's not enough for Knuckles. He yells at the group, harshly criticizing their performance. Knuckles states that they cannot fail and they need to constantly push their bodies to the limits even if it hurts them. He calls out Silver's lacking skills in particular. Despite pushback from Amy, Knuckles fires Silver. Knuckles' coldness to the crew continues to drive further the rift between them.
Part 2[]
Alone, Knuckles vents out loud to a non-existent Sonic. He questions how the hedgehog dealt with the pressure of protecting everyone so easily, compared to him. Knuckles is aware that he's hurting his friends, worsening his fears of failing everyone and leading them to death. Knuckles is also tormented by the voice of his inner conscious. Tails arrives, giving Knuckles some water and talking with him. The two talk about the stalemate they're in; with the Kaiju continiously getting stronger, the group has to constantly match it. But, everyone has their limits and it's only a matter of time before they're unable to hold out. Tails decides that one day, they'll have to kill the Kaiju in its domain to end the stalemate once and for all.
The town's bell rings, indicating the Kaiju is coming again. As Knuckles heads out, Tails asks him to look at the Kaiju closely. Noticing the Kaiju's visual similarities to Sonic, Knuckles puts it together that the Kaiju is Sonic.
Part 3[]
A few hours later, the group are able to fend off the Kaiju again. Both parties gave it their all in the battle, leaving both the Kaiju and the group with critical injuries. Knuckles wants to go after the Kaiju, knowing it may never be this weak again, but Tails protests, seeing that everyone is too wounded to continue. Knuckles knows this goes against what he said earlier about needing to kill it. Realizing that Tails is protecting Sonic, Knuckles presses the fox to tell everyone what really happened to him.
Part 4 and 5[]
Knuckles and the others learn the truth from Tails. The Baron was the original Kaiju, which was created from opening a Chaos emerald to harness its energy. He tricked Sonic into taking on the curse. The Baron dies, and Sonic is transformed into the second Kaiju.
Part 6[]
Knuckles watches everyone else's reaction to the revelation, stepping in when Amy is about to hit Tails. As he's about to let Tails walk away, his inner voice tells him that Tails may still be hiding something. Knuckles asks Tails if the curse could transfer to someone else if the Kaiju is killed, with Tails responding that the curse would also die with the Kaiju, but that would mean Sonic dies as well. Knuckles thinks that removing the Chaos Emerald shards may free Sonic, but Tails is against it, stating that the emerald shards are locked in the Kaiju's eyes.
Despite the dangers, Knuckles plans on going off alone to face Sonic, planning to save him by ripping out the emerald shards. He initially heads off to the remains of the Baron's hideout without the group. But, eventually, Tails, Amy, Cream, Big and the newly hired Blaze, follow behind. Despite his inner voice saying that the group doesn't believe he can do it on his own, Knuckles shakes it off. The group arrives at the cave, but the Kaiju is nowhere to be found. Suddenly, red light emits the whole room as the Kaiju, now even bigger, jumps down from the ceiling to attack.
Knuckles sets up a plan; have Tails dig out the floor and trap the Kaiju in a hole, while the rest distract the monster. The group fight with all their power, buying Tails enough time. The floor crumbles and the Kaiju falls. Unbeknownst to the group, a pool of lava was underneath the floor. The Kaiju sinks into the lava, with everyone briefly believing that Sonic has died as well. Just as Knuckles' inner voice screams at him for killing Sonic, everyone gets readings on their monitors. The Kaiju rises from the lava, integrating into its floor. It roars, now even more powerful than ever.
Part 7[]
Despite everyone's efforts, the Kaiju's new form is too powerful for the heroes to handle. The beast also starts shooting lasers out of his eyes to make the battle even harder. Knuckles searches for a weak point, noticing a lengthy piece of debris with a sharp point at the end. He alerts the rest of the team to keep the Kaiju at bay while Big launches the makeshift weapon out of his mech's tank cannon. The hit connects, stabbing the Kaiju in the eye. Knuckles orders everyone to fire at the behemoth, as Amy jumps in and smashes the Kaiju's wounded eye with her hammer.
The Kaiju's right eye pops out of the socket, landing on the ground and shattering to pieces, leaving only the Chaos emerald shard left. Tails captures the fragment for extra safe keeping. But, despite Tails' reading indicating that the Kaiju should revert back to Sonic, it doesn't work. The monster still goes on the attack, pummeling everyone but Knuckles who watches on in horror. His inner voice taunts him, stating that everyone will die because of him, that he led them to their demise. When all hope seems lost, the inner voice alludes to the Chaos emerald shard which fell from Tails' mech after the attack, planting the idea to harness it in Knuckles' mind.
Knuckles ignores the voice, letting his anger fuel him as he charges towards the Kaiju, aiming to take out its other eye. Although Knuckles tries withstanding the torrent of the Kaiju's eye lasers, it's too much for him. He is blasted to the ground and knocked unconscious. During his time knocked out, Big is consumed by a spill of lava from the monster and he burns to death in the fire, horrifying everyone. Awoken by his inner voice, Knuckles regains consciousness just in time to see Amy in front of the Kaiju, trying to reason with it in the hopes Sonic is still in there. Refusing to let another friend die, Knuckles listens to the voice and retrieves the Chaos emerald shard.
Part 8 and 9 - Finale[]
Just as Amy appears to be getting through to the dormant Sonic, Knuckles breaks open the cage holding the Chaos Emerald fragment. Everyone begs for him not to absorb the shard, but it's too late. Knuckles, and Sonic's mech suit in turn, transform into yet another Kaiju. Knuckles and Sonic do battle in their monsterous forms, leaving everyone else to watch. To make matters worse, both beasts have incredibly fast healing factors, nullifying any damage one monster inflicts on the other.
Tails insists that everyone stays out of the fight. Once one monster dies, it's their job to kill whoever's left standing. Despite Knuckles fully devolving into a beast, his inner voice persists, encouraging him to kill Sonic. The battle causes the Baron's old lair to crumble, leading the battle outside. Both Kaijus continue to hit blows until the Sonic Kaiju impales Knuckles with one of his arms. Determined to kill his opponent, the Knuckles Kaiju scooches himself closer, the blade pushing deeper into him. Sonic fires another laser blast from its one remaining eye, but it's not enough to stop Knuckles' movement. Knuckles puts its hand on Sonic's head, ripping out his other eye.
The remains of the Sonic Kaiju crash to the ground. As the group are astounded, Tails rallies everyone together. Knowing he'll never be as vulnerable again, everyone fires at Knuckles until he too crashes to the ground motionless. Suddenly, everyone gets a reading from Sonic's Kaiju; Sonic himself has re-emerged.
The remaining survivors head to the where the signal is to find Sonic. Tails, Amy, Cream and Blaze are initially overjoyed, but are shocked to see him gravely injured and now completely blind with empty eyesockets. Sonic reveals that he had some form of awareness while the Kaiju possessed him, stating how it feeds off of anger. Sonic then recalls Knuckles absorbing the emerald, but everyone calms him down, saying that Knuckles has already been killed, and he was spared from any further suffering. As everyone prepares to head home and tend to the wounded Sonic, Tails is abruptly crushed by the giant foot of Knuckles. The group hadn't killed Knuckles, only knocking him out for a moment. Now awake again and without a conscious mind, Amy, Cream, Blaze and Sonic are all killed by the Kaiju, knowing that their last piece of hope has been completely destroyed.
As Knuckles goes on to destroy the city and killing all its citizens, his inner voice celebrates the slaughter, Knuckles himself is taken aback as the voice states he can "finally get the hell out of here", and that he had been "sleeping in his earwax for weeks". Suddenly, a tiny figure jumps out from his side; his "inner voice" revealing themselves to be a real person. The figure presses some buttons and dials on their wrist. Knuckles watches as they grow to a normal size and their voice starts to become more high-pitched. His inner voice is revealed to be a crazed alternate version of Amy. Knuckles tries to crush the newcomer, but Amy runs out of the way. Knowing of the Kaiju's monsterous temper, Amy presses a button, electrocuting Knuckles, revealing she had a put an electroshock device his head. Amy notices a giant ring open up; a gateway to the multiverse. Amy presses another button, as Knuckles shrinks down to a more normal size; yet another device implanted inside of him.
Now closer to the ground, Knuckles notices a broken doll and picks it up. Knuckles' organic side surfaces for a brief moment, seeing the reminder of what he once protected. Amy snaps Knuckles out of the moment of reflection, beckoning towards the portal. Knuckles and Amy depart, the Kaiju now joining her and an alternate Tails on their multiversal conquest. The ring begins to infect the world around it, starting the process of decaying the already dead world.
