Ma Zhongying is a Minor Antagonist in the Hearts of Iron IV mod Kaiserreich: Legacy of the Weltkrieg, and a potential villainous Protagonist if the Player decides to play as the Kumul Khanate. He is a young, ambitious and brutal warlord who was a former member of the Ma Clique, due to being expelled for his extreme ambitions. He later served for the Kumul revolts after striking with their leaders a deal so he could expand his power.
He can potentially become the leader of the Kumul Khanate after they unify Xinjiang, having the option to expand his power and influence, which allows him to brutally seize power over the warlord. He is also a potential unifier of China.
Biography[]
Not much is known about Ma Zhongying and his backstory, other than his birth year being 1908. Described as being the black sheep of the Ma Family, and earned that reputation later on. Just like the rest of his relatives, Ma Zhongying entered the military at an age of 14. By the time he was 17, he shocked his family by deserting during the battle of Gansu against Feng Yuxing, taking with him the cavalry units north to Ningxia.
Attempting to ensure he carves out his own fiefdom, he allies himself with his distant cousin Ma Hushan, which the two would eventually work together for the cause. Ma Zhongying believes that the Xiaodatang school of Islam has caused him to target Khufia mosques in a bid to promote his beliefs through violence.
In Game[]
After being expelled by the Ma Clique, he is recruited by the Kumul leader Yulbars Khan to serve for the Kumul rebellion, described as the ‘Butcher and Gansu’ by Yulbars, for which he becomes a general, alongside his distant cousin Ma Hushan. Zhongying sparks the Xinjiang war by launching a spearhead at the garrisons in Kumul, pillaging it.
If Kumul is able to defeat both Xinjiang and East Turkestan, the various factions would begin to challenge for influence and power, with Ma Zhongying having the option to be boosted by influence. Should Ma Zhongying have more influence than any other faction, he would be absent at the start of the meeting, only to appear later with a muster of troops that overpower the city guards. After barging into the meeting with twenty troops, he quickly took over by arresting the other faction leaders before personally executing them by shooting them with a pistol to the back of their head. Thus allowing him to fully seize control over Xinjiang.
After seizing control over Xinjiang, Ma Zhongying renamed the nation to ‘The Hami Clique’. Starting his brutal conquest by crushing locals who dared to oppose him. This allows him to intensify his brutal policies, describing his rule as an Army with a State
He has the option to take on the Ma Clique, Tibet, and Mongolia, which involves him massacring the villages that expand his brutal conquest. Ma Zhongying also has the option to reunify China, if the player manages to take Beijing and eliminate every other faction, switching to his reunification focus tree. By the time the player manages to reunify China, it’s heavily implied that Ma Zhongying’s brutal actions are applied for all of China, allowing him to be the most brutal unifier out of all the paths for China.

- IRL, Ma Zhongying was destined to create a Muslim State that includes East Turkestan and Central Asia. As he wasn’t much of a Chinese Nationalist.
