An alternate version of Mari is the main antagonist of the OMORI AO3 fanfiction saga Hands, based on the Indie RPG Omori.
Unlike the canon version, who is a good person, albeit a bit of a perfectionist, this version of Mari is a person whose kindness is a facade used to manipulate her little brother Sunny and her friends. She would regularly psychologically abuse and molest Sunny for her own sexual gratification, causing him trauma, until he pushed her down the stairs when she tried to abuse him again, accidentally causing her death in self-defense.
Story[]
On an undisclosed day, she sexually abused Sunny, which became a hobby for her. So, she abused him several times to the point that Sunny preferred to stay at her friends' house to prevent it from happening. When their parents and friends gave Sunny a violin as a gift, Mari asked him to play a concert with her so they could "have more time together." But one day, when Sunny broke her violin for not wanting to do the recital and admitted that he didn't want to be around Mari, she tried to abuse him again, even hitting him when he begged her to stop it. Sunny ended up pushing her down the stairs to push her away, causing her deserved death.

This version of Mari is likely identical to her canon counterpart, since there's no direct description of what she looks like.
Personality[]
Unlike the original Mari, who is a good person in her own right, aside from being a bit of a perfectionist, this version of Mari is a manipulative, domineering, cold-hearted, and perverted person who would sexually abuse and rape her little brother to pleasure herself. She was highly controlling, sadistic, and psychologically and emotionally manipulative toward Sunny, the primary victim of her abuse.
But as Sunny stated in the story, she was even worse when she was angry as she dropped her gentle facade and became physically abusive towards Sunny as she would hit him in the face. It was implied that she saved him and Basil from drowning just so she could keep sexually abusing the former, and she uses his other fears of heights and spiders just to torment him further. Sometimes she would even outright rape him without a warning when his friends weren't with him while sadistically telling him it was his punishment for being "naughty." The story also makes it clear that she would abuse Basil as well if given the chance as she was said to have a growing lust for Basil. The story implies that she was also interested in Aubrey with her wanting a "girls' night" alone with her, suggesting that she had an interest in her, with further proof being a flashback implying that she was groping her.
Overall, this version of Mari is nothing like her original counterpart as she was a good person, while this one is only a sick rapist and manipulator.
Trivia[]
- The creator of Hands, scitydreamer, compared it to LISA: THE FIRST, which would compare Mari to Marty Armstrong, who repeatedly raped his daughter Lisa. Unlike Marty however, who had redeeming qualities, Mari has none (her so-called "love" for Sunny was out of sexual obsession).
- This version of Mari (alongside the fanfic itself) was based on a misinterpretation the author saw on the Omori subreddit, where a Redditor, seeing the Blackspace photos without context, thought that Mari was trying to abuse Sunny.
- This version of Mari inspired the fanfic False Heaven, with an alternate version similar to this one, but she only appears as the posthumous antagonist who isn't as fleshed out. It also inspired the fanfic What She Did, where everyone is older and in their twenties before Mari dies.
- This version of Mari is the most famous example of the Bad Touch Mari category on Archive of Our Own, with this story being the main inspiration for most fanfics. Of all the stories in this category, the Hands series is one of the few that doesn't use it for sexual content at all.
- At least one other fic writer has quoted this fic for Sunny/Mari purposes, which scitydreamer was absolutely not pleased about since this fic is meant to show her and Sunny's relationship as predatory and abusive. The tags attempt to shut this down by warning Sunny/Mari shippers to not interact with the author.
