Marie Payne, better known as Experiment-1222: Mommy Long Legs, is a major antagonist-turned-ally in the Poppy Playtime fanfic Catching Huggy. She is a playfully psychopathic, pink spider-like living toy with elastic and bendable limbs that was created as part of Playtime Co.'s Bigger Bodies Initiative and is currently the tyrannical hostess of their factory's on-site playground, the Game Statio. Like every other experiment that was created as part of the initiative, Mommy is secretly a human child that was experimented on, her consciousness moved into that of a toy by Playtime's employees, resulting in her becoming aggressive towards them.

History[]

Past[]

Much like in canon, Marie Payne was an orphan taken in by Playtime CO's Playcare. While living at the orphanage, she and several other orphans were introduced to the toy, CatNap, designed to secrete poppy gas from the esophagus, which, while non-lethal, sedated the kids and made them behave. Marie's exposure to the gas was so severe that she went into a violent nervous breakdown from the gas after it caused her to see a nightmarish version of CatNap just after lights out on February 5 of an unknown year (possibly 1988 or 1989).

In 1991, Marie was used as a subject in the Bigger Bodies Initiative and turned into Experiment-1222, Mommy Long Legs. Her trauma from being brutally tortured and experimented on by the scientists had caused her to be very hostile and aggressive towards the staff. However, by contrast, she acted motherly and warm towards the other experiments and children. This made her the perfect fit to run the Game Station, and she was transferred soon after.

On August 8, 1995, the Prototype would orchestrate the Hour of Joy; leading the living toys to rebel against Playtime CO. and take over the factory, killing all the adults in the process, with Mommy Long Legs participating in it, reaching down and snatching up the staff members in the Game Station with her long limbs, pulling them up to her, and likely devouring them, which marked the end of Playtime CO with the legacy of Elliot Ludwig as well as his hopes and dreams in it. For unknown reasons after the Hour of Joy, Mommy Long Legs would grow disillusioned with the Prototype, and would spend the next ten years in the Game Station avoiding him and the toys (such as CatNap) loyal to him.

Catching Huggy[]

10 years after the Hour of Joy, Mommy was still wandering around the Game Station, growing more hungry. While roaming around the Higher-Up Slides, Mommy discovered Poppy, Huggy Wuggy and the protagonist talking in the Navigation Room upstairs. She then used her stretchy arm to reach through Elliot Ludwig's slide, and abduct and drag Poppy down to the Game Station. When the protagonist and Huggy followed her and reached the entrance of the station, Mommy stole the GrabPack's red hand when the former tried to use it to open the door. She then informed them to play her games in order to achieve the train code and instructed them to go to the Musical Memory.

After imprisoning Poppy with her webs, Mommy arrived to the Musical Memory herself to start the game, noting that Buzno is excited to play and eat. When the duo successfully entered round 5, the game became impossible to play. Yet the round also featured a cease button, allowing them to turn off the game. Mommy tried to accuse them in cheating because both of them played the game at the same time, while only one child is supposed to play each game at a time, only for the protagonist to point that neither of them are kids, so the rule wasn't broken. Surprised, she quickly checks the rules and, after finding out that it's true, gives them part of the code, but not before warning them to not let Huggy help them next time.

The protagonist and Huggy then were directed to the second game, Whack-A-Wuggy, where they are required to hit the Mini Huggies with their GrabPack to prevent them from crawling out of their tunnels to attack them. Before starting the game, Mommy tried to frighten the protagonist by telling them the Huggies no longer had their strings on them to pull them back as a countermeasure. However, instead of trying to attack the protagonist, Mini Huggies decided to cover Huggy and hug him. Mommy tries to accuse them in cheating once again, but the protaginist points that Mini Huggies were the ones who decided to not play along. Agreeing with them, she still refuses to give them part of the code, only for two Mini Huggies to steal it from her and handle to the duo. Annoyed, she instructs them to go to Statues.

Before starting the third game, she explained that the children used to call her "Mommy" as they shared a close bond with her. She then revealed to Huggy that the protagonist used work here and claimed that they deserved to be trapped in the factory for their role in experimenting on the children. During the chase, the duo found that the exit has been blocked by rubble, meaning they were never supposed to win this game. Luckily, the protagonist notices a hanging bar above the window of the employee observatory. Getting Huggy's attention and pointing at it, they use their GrabPack, grabbing the bar and swnging themselves into the observatory before escaping down a hole to the service tunnels. Realizing they escaped, Mommy called for them, claiming they won the game and that she'll give them the code. Yet after being continuously ignored, she became enraged and threatened she would find them.

Successfully tracking the protagonist down to the Service Tunnels, Mommy ambushes them, falsely accuses on cheating and declaring that they would play one final "game" of Hide and Seek. As she counted down from 10, she let the protagonist run away. After evading her several times, the protagonist finally tricked her into leaping at an industrial grinder before accidentally turning it on. Mommy Long Legs, realizing what was happening, began to scream in terror, cursing the protagonist out of fear that the Prototype would take her remains and make her "part of him". However, before that happened, the protagonist turns the grinder off and, with Huggy's help, gets her limbs out. Shocked, Mommy tries to ask why they saved her, only for the protagonist to cut her off and tell her to leave them alone, which she does.

Later Mommy encounters the protagonist in prison, revealing to them that the Prototype draaged her there, but she managed to get herself free. The protagonist then proposes a truce, saying that they've got a much better chance for survival if they stick together. She agrees and the duo eventually reaches the experiment viewing room, where the Doctor releases Yarnaby from his cell. He then tries and fails to break through the window separating him from his targets before running off. The duo spends some time evading him, eventually escaping with Doey the Doughman's help. After some time, the duo encounters Poppy and damaged Kissy Missy, who hide them from the Prototype. When Poppy questions the reasons Mommy is still alive and in prison, the protagonist explains that they have a truce and that she promised to behave. Once the four of them gets inside the Safe Haven, Poppy offers Mommy to go and get some rest, which she does by curling up on an empty blanket.

Personality[]

At first Mommy looks like a friendly person, cheerfully greeting the protagonist and explaining them the rules. However, it doesn't take too long for her mask to slip, starting from the promise to tear them apart and eat their insides should they cheat.

Athough she says that she doesn't like cheaters, that doesn't stop her from rigging most of the games, such as tampering with the Musical Memory's mechanics so the program added more colors and even mathematical symbols to the game in order to increase the difficulty or giving a poor lighting in the Whack-a-Wuggy's area, making it harder for the protagonist to see them, making her somewhat hypocritical.

Mommy shows to be more sympathetic towards her fellow experiments than her canon version, sparing Bunzo and Mini Huggies instead of killing them. It's also confirmed that she was kind and caring towards the children, likely because she knows that they are innocent, they treat her very well, and that they are in no way responsible for her condition or situation.

After the protagonist saves her from the grinder, she shows more honorable side, which is seen when she not only maintains the truce with them, but also agrees to not attack neither them nor anyone else in the Safe Haven when they reach it.

Trivia[]

  • Originally author planned to let Mommy die, but changed their mind after getting a couple comments about sparing her and coming up with an idea for how to do it.
