Night Shade is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Orchid) of Season 1 of the Animator vs. Animation fanfic series Father & Son.
He is the brother of Navy who assists him and his wife Orchid in their plans of world domination. Having the power to resurrect the dead, Night Shade is the main reason behind Navy being able to haunt the heroes for as long as he does.
Roles[]
Night Shade served as the unseen overarching antagonist of Apart But Together: Father & Son 3 and Father & Son 4: A Family Curse, one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside the Curse) of Father & Son 5: Shards Of A Color Drained World, the titular main antagonist of Father & Son 6: Shades of Future Night, the secondary antagonist of The Great Above: Father & Son 7 and a minor antagonist in King Of This Kingdom: Father & Son 8.
He would then be a posthumous antagonist for the rest of the series.
Appearance[]
Night Shade is a stick figure of an unspecified dark color.
History[]
Backstory[]
Night Shade had a rather simple background, being friends with Navy and Orchid, while being aware of the latter's powers and how she passed them down to Purple. He had to watch as Navy abandoned them, Orchid died and Purple disappeared despite Night Shade being stated in Orchid's will to be his new caretaker.
One day, Night Shade would witness the events of the first Father & Son, specifically how Gold rescued Purple and Red from Navy near the beginning. He caught up to Navy and offered to help his side. Throughout the next four books, Night Shade would watch and assist in Navy's crimes, being afraid of how deeply his old friend has fallen and secretly happy whenever Purple gets to reunite with his old family; most specifically, Night Shade was the one who imprisoned Purple in Navy's basement at the end of the second book.
Father & Son 5: Shards Of A Color Drained World[]
Night Shade resides on a deserted island after Orchid drained all the life out of Stick City. The woman finds and confronts him, the two teaming up to resurrect Navy and continue his plans of brainwashing Purple to achieve world domination. For unknown reasons, Purple has visions of Night Shade talking to Orchid about Purple's powers and their plot to bring back Navy.
Later on, Orchid and Night Shade invade ALANSPC together, the former battling King while the latter goes to get Purple, but Night Shade is quickly defeated compared to Orchid. She eventually escapes with Second, Dark and Purple pursuing her, the rest of the heroes continuing the fight against Night Shade, which they lose with him putting them inside a forcefield and infecting the Chosen One with Orchid's Gray Death powers, which she gave to them. Eventually, Chosen passes away from the infection.
The heroes decide to create a thunderstorm using the Command Block Staff to distract Night Shade while they run away, but he follows them to the Outernet and manages to kill everyone there by turning them into stone, giving Purple, Second and Dark a vision of their deaths. Later on, when they're all resurrected as part of a deal Purple made with Orchid, Night Shade comes in to taunt the heroes before entering another battle with them. In the battle, Night Shade smugly mocks the heroes and tries to claim Navy wouldn't have left Purple if he had been strong enough to impress him. However, when Orchid demands him to help her find Second, Dark and Purple, he's forced to break the fight and imprison them in a force-field while waiting for guards.
When he sees a bright light in the sky, Night Shade immediately goes to help Orchid, realising something went wrong. However, when they see Purple kill her, they instead run away in a panic to save their life. He later finds her barely-alive body and puts her in a submersion tank, unleashing an army of drones for his revenge on Purple.
Father & Son 6: Shades of Future Night[]
Night Shade somehow brings back Navy and Orchid, and together they plan to brainwash Purple and bring him to the "Great Above". When the kidnapped Purple and Red try to escape their base alongside the spy Willow, Orchid and Night Shade confront them. Orchid tries to brainwash Purple herself, but Night Shade stops her so Navy can do the honors. However, when the Color Gang and Chosen bust in to help them, they decide to skip it and brainwash Purple already, teleporting away before the others can catch them. The heroes together realise that Night Shade is the true biggest threat with abilities to resurrect the dead, and that neither Navy or Orchid can be killed permanently as long as he's still around, making him responsible for their past revivals and the most crucial part of their plans.
At the end of the fic, Navy finally opens the portal to the Great Above; a whole new dimension that he wants to conquer. He, Orchid and Night Shade enter it together, managing to capture Purple, Willow and Sunny with them, alongside dozens of innocent citizens.
The Great Above: Father & Son 7[]
Night Shade serves under Navy and Orchid in the Great Above, while secretly working on a machine that he claim will let King reunite with his family soon; according to Navy, it's also gonna let them conquer both the Great Above and the Outernet. Additionally, King's brainwashed wife Amber manages to kidnap Blue and Yellow after being revived by Night Shade. Later into the fic, Night Shade finds and ambushes the heroes' base after spotting some of them escaping the castle. He's attacked by Purple before he can harm anyone, and all the heroes flee the scene.
In the last chapter, Dark used a rifle to shoot Night Shade in the head, seemingly killing him. Shortly afterwards, Agent Fernando brainwashes Purple into overthrowing the kingdom for himself.
King Of This Kingdom: Father & Son 8[]
Night Shade is mentioned in passing throughout the fic, with several characters doubting his death. More specifically, it's revealed that Orchid had an affair with him that resulted in Purple having a younger sister named Amethyst.
Near the end of the fic, Night Shade reveals to have survived Dark's assassination attempt, appearing to help Navy kill the heroes. However, Navy decides he doesn't need Night Shade at this point. He proceeds to use the gun he tried to kill Purple with on Night Shade, immediately killing him and causing his body to vanish. After his death, it's revealed he was Navy's brother.
Trivia[]
- Night Shade uses both he/him and them/they pronouns.
- Despite some of his first chapters stating he's not as evil as the others, the author even calling him "Chill Navy", Night Shade later shows himself to be as evil as the other two, containing the same sadism and victim-blaming of Purple.
- Similarly, it was at first implied Amethyst might have been a child of rape, but this was never brought up again.
- While not confirmed, it's likely their name is Ribbon due to being Navy's brother.
