Nightmare is the final antagonist of Five Nights at Freddy's fanfiction Nightmare, a FNaF novel created by AIEchidna (co-created by Cypris), as well as the overarching antagonist of the entire series.

It serves as Death to the victims that fall for it, but decide to play a cruel game with them first. It is the archenemy of Freddy Fazbear (which the latter sees Nightmare as an annoyance) and Michael Afton.

Appearance[]

Nightmare is similar in appearance to Nightmare Fredbear. However, it's more contorted, like what a real nightmare would look like and it's completely shadowed, having two red pin-pricked eyes.

Biography[]

Five Nights at Freddy's: Nightmare[]

Five Nights at Freddy's: Withered[]

Nightmare is first mentioned by Freddy, whom foreshadows his arrival.

Nightmare indeed arrives on Night 6, stalking Michael throughout the night, tauntingly teasing him and distracting him from the other animatronics, primarily Freddy and Foxy. Freddy and Nightmare reveal to be in a one-sided kahoots as Freddy is more focused on mauling Michael himself.

After tauntingly making Michael hallucinate, all Nightmare says to him is that he pities Michael's bloody end, foreshadowing The Bite of 87', which Michael surprisingly survives (which starts Nightmare's hunt on Michael).

Five Nights at Freddy's: Refurbished[]

Much like the last book, Nightmare primarily taunts Michael using the Golden Freddy suit.

In the backstage during Night 6, Nightmare says to both Freddy and Michael that Death always wins in the end, and that if he can't kill Michael, he'll kill someone like Michael (which foreshadows William and Tracy)

Five Nights at Freddy's: Afton[]

Nightmare appears and tricks William into making a deal with him, in which he uses Afton to dismantle the four classic animatronics, then chases Afton into the backroom.

Afton gets into the suit, then gets springlocked in the Spring Bonnie suit. Afton yells for help, but Nightmare states Afton will stay in the suit until he sees fit, and then leaves the man to rot in the suit.

Pre-Finale[]

Around 2009, Tracy would be hunted by Nightmare during the night, and he would miss a swing which was meant to kill Tracy, and thus, Tracy would be added to his death list, which wouldn't be established until Finale.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Springlocked[]

Nightmare is a pretty minor character in this story.

Nightmare first appears when Michael sees a hallucination of the golden bear.

During Night 5's fire, Springtrap tries to escape, a look of horror in his eyes, before he's suddenly dragged back by Nightmare into the flames, forced to burn for eternity in hell.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Finale[]

Nightmare first appears when he appears as Golden Freddy in the saferoom, chasing the kids down and ends up mutilating Grant.

Nightmare then appears at 3 AM, taunting Tracy. As he does, he lunges at the window and starts clawing at it. This causes Tracy to scream, have a panic attack and run from the office, only being calmed down by a panicked Matthew.

Nightmare later appearing as the man in the black hoodie, which reminds Tracy (as she's escaping from Freddy) of her childhood and gives her the terrifying realization that those two are one in the same.

Nightmare genuinely hates kids cartoons due to their mocking of villains^[1]
Nightmare is also organic, as its true form isn't known.^[2]
Nightmare could be considered to be a Grey Zone character, as while he is undoubtedly sadistic in his methods, he is still technically Death just doing his job, as he only goes after Tracy and Grant (due to the former cheating death when she was little and the latter cheating death because of Bonnie), only using Matthew as a threat, also going after William Afton in Springlocked because William's death was held off.
