Nightmare is a major antagonist-turned-villainous ally of Five Nights at Freddy's fanfiction Mike's New Ghostly Family, by Archcommander-Tenebros.
He's a powerful demon lord and a leader of the Nightmares, a clan of demons that rules over the lower circles of Hell, taking forms of twisted and monstrous versions of Freddy Fazbear animatronics that represent the corruption of innocense associated with the Fazbear franchise. Though he dedicated himself to the cause of evil, he is known to be one of the few demons who possess slivers of honor and morality and are allowed to periodically visit Earth, and has been known to frequently assist Mike Schmidt and his ghostly family when it comes to fighting William Afton, whom he absolutely despises.
Appearance[]
Nightmare takes form of huge black bear animatronic resembling Freddy Fazbear or Fredbear, whose body is made entirely of shadows, with his hands and feet ending with razor-sharp claws while his mouth is full of sharp rows of teeth, with his belly possessing a second mouth. He wears a bright yellow bowtie and a tophat, and he has scarlet blazing eyes that were stated to glow with unspeakable malice and cruelty.
His true demonic form is shrouded completely in the darkness, with only faintest outlines of his true form being visible. When not masquerading as an animatronic, he resembles an incomprehensible, hideous abomination wearing the pitch-black armor, the connections between the segments taking form of multiple mouths with razor-sharp fangs, with two huge black wings that look large enough to envelop entire mountains, and two massive arms that end with hands that look large enough to destroy buildings in but a single sweep. The only visible parts of his true form that can be seen through the darkness are his glowing scarlet eyes and a black crown surrounded with blazing orange flames that marks his status as one of the most powerful demon lords in terms of might and authority.
When taking on the human disguise, he resembles an intimidating-looking human with pale skin, bushy black hair and a beard that covers entirety of his chin, light brownish eyes that almost look red, sharp fingernails that almost look like claws, and teeth sharp enough to look like fangs. He's dressed in a sharp black dress shirt and wears a dark grey vest with the pants of the same color. He wears a yellow bowtie and a hat that look somewhat similar to his animatronic form.
Personality[]
As befitting for a demon, Nightmare is cruel, monstrous, vicious, hateful and sadistic. He greatly enjoys tormenting wicked souls that were condemned to eternal suffering in Hell and relishes on preying on fears and black truths that humans dread. He's an expert at psychological torture, knowing what buttons to push and how to break his victims with words. He's also very intelligent and pragmatic, refusing to engage into petty acts of evil when there's nothing significant to gain and a lot to lose. What sets him apart from many demons, however, is the fact that he's one of the few demons who possess a well-defined code of honor and moral standards, which makes him one of the few demons that Heaven grants periodical access to Earth, a privilege very few demons possess.
As a warrior, he respects those who earn their kills in battle and has no love for cowards who choose to prey on the weak and defenseless, and sees interfering in battles of another warriors as a great insult to their honor. He also understands the value of family, treating his own siblings with respect and letting them enjoy themselves first before joining in their fun, as well as tolerating their behavior when other demon lords would murder their subordinate on sight for. Per his words, he struck his fellow Nightmare only if one dared to betray him, which was implied to not happen for a very long time, and at worst, he only insults and belittles them, which doesn't bother them in the slightest. These slivers of morality are the reason why he thoroughly despises William Afton, finding his cruel and manipulative treatment of his own children absolutely repulsive, and he would even be willing to work with the forces of Good to ensure that Afton's plans fail.
After being outwitted by Mike Schmidt during their first encounter when the man stood up for his ghostly children and defended them against his psychological abuse, he developed respect towards the mortal, pleased by the fact that Mike provided a worthy resistance, and even accepted his suggestions on how to worsen Afton's torture. After seeing Mike Schmidt's battle prowess in his mindscape against Afton's Nightmare Springtrap form and how he was able to completely break his soul and spirit, Nightmare's respect for the man grew even further, and he bestowed upon him his personal blessing, which also served as a curse to Afton, and even gave him a warrior's salute, a sign that is the closest to him acknowledging someone as an equal, showing that he respects Mike that much.
History[]
Nightmare and his clan were ruling over the lowest circles of Hell for thousands of years, their names feared all over Hell and their dominion uncontested even with seven making up their numbers. When Evan Afton, killed by the Bite of '83 and William Afton unplugging his life support and residing in the afterlife antechamber known as the Crimson Lake, swore to make his brother Michael pay for his death and all the suffering he caused him for his entire life, Old Man Consequences, the guardian of Crimson Lake, granted his wish in the most unwanted way possible by sending the Nightmares after him in cursed dreams from which he would be unable to wake up until he survives 'til 6 AM, where he would die over and over again until the successful night survival. Nightmare and his clan took forms of nightmarish versions of Freddy Fazbear franchise's animatronics during their torment of Michael, keeping them afterwards as a testament to the corruption of innocense and destruction of purity Fazbear's franchise was closely associated with.
Nightmare himself didn't interfere until the seventh night, allowing his fellow Nightmares to enjoy themselves at first before he would join the fun himself. After explaining to Michael about how well he treats his fellow Nightmares, he then proceeds to break Michael's spirit by challenging him to moral superiority, mocking him for abusing and killing Evan when Nightmare himself treats his family much better in comparison. Afterwards, he continued gruesomely murdering Michael in his cursed nightmares until the teen managed to survive the final two nights, his suffering finally brought to an end. Soon, Evan made his appearance, telling Nightmare off as he promised that he would let him go after surviving all eight nights. Nightmare stayed true to his words, but before he left, he grabbed Michael and cryptically told him that the teen would reap what he sow and pay for what he had done against Evan, and then he departed with a laughter. His words would eventually be proven true, as Michael would die at the hands of Elizabeth, possessing Circus Baby animatronic, who conspired with other Funtime animatronics to create Ennard and wear her brother's body as a skinsuit for itself until Michael's body puked it out and Michael himself came back to life as a zombie thanks to the Remnant.
Once William Afton perished, his soul fell into possession of the Nightmares, who began to torture him until Afton decided to make a wager with Nightmare to ensure that he'd be freed from his tortures for a thousand years in case of victory. Afton betted that if Nightmare would come to Mike Schmidt and his new ghostly family of Afton's murder victims and his daughter and reveal their darkest secrets to each other, then they would turn against each other, breaking their family apart from within, while Nightmare believed that it would only strengthen their bonds, and thus, the wager was struck, and Nightmare came to Earth to fulfill its conditions.
Soon after the wager was made, the Nightmare arrived at Schmidt's mansion, at first cursing Cassidy with triggering her traumatic memories before forcing every ghost child to experience the nightmares about their past experiences as murderous animatronics, forcing them to watch the scenarios where they murder their closest loved ones. Afterwards, he appeared in Mike's house, where the Marionette tried to fight him off only to lose and be used as a hostage. When Schmidt saw him, Nightmare demanded him and his ghostly children to come down, using the Puppet as a bait. As soon as Mike and the ghosts came down to save her, Nightmare released the Marionette before revealing that he actually intended to trap them all in the same room, with none of them being able to leave it until he's done. After mockingly congratulating them on their happiness, Nightmare forced them to relive their deaths and every single murder of innocent nightguard, gloating afterwards that they all are murderers and that they have done nothing to atone for their crimes, adding that they did nothing to improve Mike Schmidt's life and even worsened it by forcing him to cancel his expensive vacation, trying to get Mike to condemn them for their crimes. Afterwards, he mocked Schmidt as well by declaring that he also made their afterlives worse by making them vulnerable to William Afton's attacks by setting their animatronics' AIs to 0 in the 1993, trying to make the ghost children condemn Mike for contributing to their suffering. Fortunately, none of them were condemning each other, and Schmidt even gloated to demon that nothing he said would ever break their relationship. However, Nightmare responded by threatening to kill the defiant mortal, thus forcing Liz to take form of Scrap Baby and attack him, clawing at his neck and forcing the demon to release her new father.
Unfortunately, Liz bringing his attention to herself was exactly what Nightmare wanted. Effortlessly defeating her, Nightmare then proceeded to cruelly rip into her past sins, revealing to her that the man she scooped at Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental was her own brother, Michael Afton, and guilt-tripping her by accusing her of betraying him and repaying his sacrifice with pledging herself to Afton's cause of evil, furiously declaring that she does not deserve freedom or redemption and does not deserve Michael as her brother, before twisting the knife further by proclaiming that the reason why he never visited her was because he'd never want to come near her again after her betrayal, completely breaking her spirit and reducing her to a sobbing wreck.
However, Mike wasn't going to allow Nightmare to hurt his children like that and challenged the demon, countering all of his arguments with logic and facts, stating that the ghost children did manage to display redemption by saving him from a thief without resorting to murder as they did in the past, that Nightmare himself is not the right judge on the subject of redemption due to being a demon, that Mike's cancelled expensive vacation is not a big deal to him at all with his riches and tons of spare time, that God himself had acknowledged that Liz's sins were not her fault and were attributed to outside factors beyond her control, that her murder of Michael was not a betrayal, but a tragic accident, and that she would be incapable of remembering Michael due to passage of time when she was trapped in Circus Baby's body. Enraged by the fact that Mike managed to completely counter all of his arguments, Nightmare threatened Mike with agonizing death, only for Mike to display no fear, as he doesn't fear death and knew that, should Nightmare kill him, the ghosts' quest for redemption will be complete and they will be free to go to Heaven. Defying Nightmare one last time, Schmidt was perfectly willing to embrace demon lord's attack...
But the demon surprised everyone by laughing at Mike's triumph and releasing everyone, congratulating the man on his success. Confused, Mike demanded answers, and Nightmare revealed the reasoning behind his arrival, explaining to Mike and his ghostly family about the wager he made with William Afton and its conditions, as he made a win-win scenario for himself: if he succeeded in breaking their family, he'd advance the cause of evil on Earth, and if he failed, then he'd win the wager against Afton and will be able to torture him without any restraints from Heaven. Enraged by learning that, even from the depths of Hell, William Afton still tried to bring more suffering to the souls of his victims and his own daughter, Mike Schmidt decided to give Nightmare personal suggestions on how to worsen Afton's tortures, which he accepted as a sign of respect before leaving their house and returning to Hell.
In Hell, William Afton refused to concede defeat, believing that they still may break apart afterwards, but as he and Nightmare watched, Schmidt's new family still remained loyal to each other, proving that William's attempt to break them apart had failed. Afton accused him of not even trying to break them apart and claimed that he and Nightmare should've worked together, as both of them are evil monsters. Nightmare was enraged by this comment, stabbing him in throat and declaring that he absolutely despises William for his cowardice and the way he treated his own family as disposable tools for his goals, which offended the few moral standards Nightmare had, and began his torture sessions, using the torture device meant to reenact his death in Spring Bonnie suit, a method suggested by Mike, with springlocks imbued with poison and the device setting itself aflame to worsen his pain.
For next year, Nightmare and his family didn't cross paths with Schmidts' family, instead tending to their own businesses, either by torturing Afton and other wicked souls or by messing with the Schmidts and other people by adding strokes of bad luck to their games. However, it all would change when Vucarik decides to kickstart a rebellion against Lucifer in hopes of overthrowing and supplanting him as leaders of Hell, cooperating with William Afton to do so. Since Nightmare was one of the many who declined his alliance, the rival demon lord broke into Nightmares' realm and stole the demonic essences of younger Nightmares, imbuing Afton with these essences and sending him to mortal world. Realizing the implications of what Afton would try to do with his newfound freedom, Nightmare communicated with Mike Schmidt in his dream, warning him that William Afton is coming after his blood and informed him of what the killer might do should he get his hands on the man, and explaining that he won't be able to assist him until the civil war in Hell ends, but promising to assist him if necessary. He also explained that, should Afton possess Mike in an attempt to attack his soul, he'd become suspectible to the laws of Mike's mental world and with Schmidt's lucid dreaming, he'd be able to resist the possession and turn the tables against the demonic killer. After testing Mike's power, he departed, intending to crush Vucarik's rebellion in Hell.
In the lower circles of Hell, civil war raged on, with Vucarik's forces fighting against Lucifer's loyalists and status quo supporters who saw Vucarik's power grab for what it is, with Nightmares joining the forces against Vucarik. Soon, Nightmare himself joined the battle, shedding his animatronic form and revealing his true eldritch form before crushing the usurper's armies with three spells, with one to inflict heavy losses among Vucarik's ranks, the second one to drive his troops to mindless bloodlust and break the camaraderie between his demon lord allies, and the third one to destroy what's left of Vucarik's armies completely. After destroying his forces, he broke and mangled Vucarik's body before leaving him to other demon lords, as he returned back to his animatronic form with Nightmarionne and Nightmare Fredbear and travelled to Earth to assist Mike Schmidt in stopping William Afton.
On Earth, he noticed that Mike Schmidt has been possessed by Nightmare Springtrap, Afton's demonic form, and actively fights him in his mind. Though he saw no need in assisting him, he still entered his mind to ensure that he'd be able to arrive immediately should Nightmare Springtrap turn the tide of battle into his favor, observing the battle more thoroughly, leaving Nightmarionne to entertain the ghostly children to ensure they won't interfere and Nightmare Fredbear to anticipate for Nightmare Springtrap's arrival should he attempt to exit Mike's body. As the battle between Schmidt and Afton raged on, complete with Nightmare Springtrap calling forth Vucarik's army remnants, the demonic murderer was still incapable of inflicting any lasting damage on the former nightguard. Soon, Mike faked defeat before revealing to Nightmare Springtrap that the murderer had no chance of winning in the first place and began to cruelly torture him. During the torture session, Nightmare manifested himself in Schmidt's mind and mocked William Afton, revealing to him that he could've ended his assault from the very beginning if Nightmare Springtrap was able to take the upper hand. Afton started begging for Nightmare to take him back to Hell to get away from Mike Schmidt as far as possible, but the demon lord, amused that the child murderer considers Hell to be more merciful option compared to what he endures now, refused to comply with his request, leaving him at Mike's mercy.
Mike was about to finish his tortures by tearing William's soul apart with his scythe, but he was stopped by the spirit of Serene, his mother, who was appalled by the cruelty her son was displaying as he exposed Charlie to the worst aspects of his personality. As mother and son reunited, William Afton tried to make his escape, but Nightmare stopped him and crushed his body under his foot. Afterwards, he brought the attention of Mike and Serene, informing them of Afton's presence, to which Serene responded by telling Nightmare to remove him from her son's sight and mind, which he did, but not before harvesting all of the essences of the demons that were killed in Mike's mind and the stolen essences of the younger Nightmares, as well as mocking William for making his own plights worse with his escape attempt, gloating that he'll be stripped of all of Heaven's protections for the rest of eternity. Before he left, Mike asked Nightmare a question whether he wanted to corrupt his soul, to which Nightmare answered that his primary objectives were to see Afton's plans crumble and to see him suffer personally from Mike's hand, and that an idea of corrupting him was merely an afterthought that, despite him contemplating to do so, he never really intended to go through, and left with Afton's shade to the real world.
Back in the real world, Nightmare carried William Afton's mutilated, broken shade outside, with Nightmarionne and the ghost children shocked to discover that Mike Schmidt was able to mangle the killer's body like that. Nightmare brought the child murderer's soul to Mike's backyard, where he opened the gate of Hell in the pool, throwing William's shade to his damnation. As the group returned back to the living room, Nightmare congratulated Schmidt on the sheer viciousness he delivered his retribution upon Afton, and for entertainment provided to him, he offered him his blessing, a spell known as the Anathema Curse, which would mark Mike an anathema to William Afton, sending the killer into unspeakable agony whenever he'd find himself in the presence of Schmidt. Afterwards, Mike Schmidt confessed to Nightmare that he actually came to respect the demon lord for various qualities, and thanks to his contribution in protecting their family, forgave Nightmare for his attack on his family. As the Nightmares turned to depart back to Hell, Nightmare turned to Schmidt and gave him a warrior's salute, a closest the demon lord ever displayed to acknowledging someone else as an equal, before returning back to Hell.
Soon after he brought Afton back, he arrived at Crimson Lake, reporting to Old Man Consequences that Afton's plans were thwarted and he was sent back to Hell. Old Man Consequences congratulated him on his successful task, and Nightmare, after the discussion about Schmidt's darkness and his dedication to the path of goodness, confessed that he is displeased with the fact that he and his clan failed to break Afton despite their best efforts while Mike was perfectly able to do so. Old Man Consequences adviced to Nightmare that the demon should try to make a different approach in breaking his spirit, focusing on crushing Afton's arrogance that defined him and made him see all other lives as worthless when compared to himself.
Some time after assisting Schmidt in reenacting the game of Trivia Murder Party in his dreams, Nightmare brought his clan to discuss the new method of torture for William Afton, proposing to have him relive the plight of the many nightguards who suffered at Freddy Fazbear-related establishments and make him a laughingstock for all of Hell to watch and enjoy his misfortunes. He ordered the Nightmares to conduct research on all animatronics related to Freddy Fazbear and Circus Baby franchises so that they'd be able to recreate their behavior and put them in the new torture chamber modelled after Fazbear-related pizzerias where he'd be forced to fend off all animatronics that were ever brought into existence by tainted franchises.
When Afton's new torture chamber was created, Nightmare arrived at Schmidts' house, where he decided to let them be the first to decide what tortures should William Afton experience, as they were the ones who suffered at his hands the most, with them choosing all animatronics that represented their past selves, with the addition of Springtrap, and as the night for Afton began, he died at the hands of Chica before he even finished his first hour. As Nightmare realized that watching him struggle for his life would be more interesting than seeing him fail before his first hour, he informed the Nightmarionne to give Afton some fundamental knowledge on how the office worked, before sending all Nightmare animatronics at him, with Scrap Baby and Molten Freddy added to the mix, and this time, it was Nightmare Bonnie who claimed his kill. After two sessions of Afton's tortures, Nightmare explained to the Schmidts that, with so many options of what animatronics they can send after William, there are endless possibilities for the ways to make Afton suffer...
After the long amount of time, Nightmare ended up receiving tons of paperwork about the recent events about the war in hell, Vucarik's uprising and defeat, William Afton's escape, and the new torture method developed by the Nightmares. After spending three hours on doing the paperwork, he was about to relax, but then Nightmare Bonnie informed him that two neighboring demon lords broke out in a war over whether the word "color" should be spelled with a U, with the call for nearby demon lords to interfere. Greatly irritated, Nightmare left his subordinates to deal with the problem, prepared William Afton for another session of tortures, and went to Schmidts' family to choose animatronics to send after Afton's blood. For the first session, Schmidts picked all animatronics that attack from outside the office, with Afton eventually perishing at the hands of Marionette, whose brutality horrified Charlie, the Puppet's former inhabitant, with Nightmare's mocking compliments not helping her situation. After the session, Liz and Fritz decided to send all versions of Circus Baby and Foxy at Afton, a combination that turned out to be a little to easy for the child murderer to handle. Once Nightmare realized this, he summoned DeeDee to add one more animatronic to make things harder for William, the animatronic in question being Rockstar Bonnie. As William spent time on looking for Rockstar Bonnie's guitar, he forgot to check on Funtime Foxy, resulting in him meeting a gruesome death at the hands of his former creation. As they talked about whether the challenge will eventually become easier for Afton, Nightmare confessed that sometimes the Nightmares wipe his memory about the animatronics to ensure he won't be able to achieve victory, deciding to wipe his memory after the next session as he handles the tablet to Mike, letting him pick Afton's tormentors, with Mike having a couple of ideas for setups against the killer...
At some point, after Nightmare had discussion with Nightmare Chica over the time when they will wipe Afton's memories of his new tortures, he overheard the monstrous roars, and soon, Nightmare Mangle barged into his throne room, jumping on the demon lord's lap and licking his face with its tongue. Soon, Nightmarionne entered the room, revealing that he created a new Nightmare. Nightmare, annoyed by the fact that Nightmarionne didn't inform him of his plans, though understanding that he never forbade him from creating new Nightmares, declared to his servant that such experiments are strictly forbidden and require his full awareness of his plans when requesting for permission, before asking the purpose behind its creation. Nightmarionne told Nightmare that Nightmare Mangle is meant to be their new pet, a hellhound imbued with their demonic essence. Observing Nightmarionne's creation, Nightmare declared that it will not be used in a prolonged battle, but admitted that it has potential as a torturer or tracker. He then told Nightmarionne that he'll be the one cleaning up if it shits on his carpet and told him to leave, as he pondered about using Nightmare Mangle as a new animatronic torturer for William Afton.
Much later, Nightmare visited Mike again in his dreams, requesting to make a deal that will benefit them both: the demon lord requested to a piece of Mike's inner darkness to Hell with him, and in exchange, Nightmare will be in his debt. Reluctantly, Mike accepted the deal, and with a portion of his darkness harverted, the demon left, leaving to Mike a cryptic hint that the darkness is coming, the one that is born not from William Afton's influence, and he'll find out about it very soon. As Mike eventually discovers at the next morning, the darkness Nightmare hinted at turned out to be the newest incarnation of Fazbear Entertainment, brought to life once more.
Once Mike takes control of the situation, obtains one of the VR games that Fazbear Entertainment planned to sell, and learns of the existence of Glitchtrap, defeating him thanks to the Anathema Curse, he contacts Nightmare, explaining to him everything about his findings and tells him that there are thousands of Glitchtraps, each one located in every single copy of Fazbear Entertainment's new VR game, and if left unchecked, they all are free to possess thousands of people. Disturbed by the implications, Nightmare immediately made the stopping of Glitchtrap his highest priority. After an unsuccessful search in Afton's memories about the circumstances of his birth and discussion with his fellow Nightmares, he was visited by Shadow Bonnie, who demanded that Nightmare must arrive to Crimson Lake, per Old Man Consequences' orders. Leaving Nightmarionne and Nightmare Fredbear in charge, he immediately departed to Crimson Lake, where Old Man Consequences resided.
Old Man Consequences told Nightmare that, due to Glitchtrap's presence, the world of supernatural is required to directly interfere with the world of living, and, after granting him extended period of his presence on Earth, informed him of the rituals that would be able to destroy Glitchtrap effortlessly, normally forbidden but allowed for such task due to extreme circumstances. Afterwards, he requested that Nightmare obtains the copy of VR game that contains Glitchtrap so that they'd be able to perform such a ritual, before warning Nightmare that should he attempt to betray the Heaven or extort price for Schmidt for assistance the demon lord provides, the consequences will be dire, and allowed Nightmare to leave.
Later, Nightmare arrived at Schmidts' house, where they discussed plans about dealing with Glitchtraps. When Schmidts informed him that they managed to delay the release until the end of October, that the games' copies were stored in the various warehouses, and that their copy of VR game contained grievously injured, but living version of Glitchtrap, Nightmare was satisfied with the answers, knowing that he and his superiors can successfully perform their plan. After accepting the copy of the game, he travelled to the Crimson Lake, where he presented the copy to Old Man Consequences, before asking him what plan does he have in mind. Old Man Consequences explained his plan by making an analogy with "Chain Destruction" Yu-Gi-Oh! card, conveying that the ritual to destroy all Glitchtraps will work in similar way, though he noted that only Glitchtraps confined within the games will be destroyed, leaving those who already escaped alive and unharmed, and that there will be massive collaterial damage to the surroundings dealt by the ritual. After being taught how to perform the ritual, Nightmare departed, returning to Schmidt's family and informing them of the new developments, telling Mike to construct himself an alibi before he'll perform the ritual in five days.
Once Mike constructed an alibi by going with Eisensteel, his former company, on a vacation, Nightmare and his fellow demons performed a ritual, restoring wounded Glitchtrap in Mike's copy of the game and using it to destroy every single Glitchtrap in every single copy of the game, blowing up Fazbear Entertainment's warehouses. Afterwards, he performed a second ritual to check for any existing copies of the game and discovered that there was one copy of the game that was devoid of Glitchtrap's presence, indicating that one had managed to escape. After reporting to Schmidt's ghost children about the success of the ritual and the fact that one had escaped, he told them to contact Schmidt as soon as possible before returning to Hell, where Old Man Consequences congratulated the Nightmares on their good work. Nightmare dismissed all of his fellow Nightmares before telling Nightmare Bonnie to conduct experiments on Glitchtrap and do everything to learn of his true nature.
Afterwards, Nightmare was called by Mike to discuss further plans of action, suggesting that they acquire a second copy of the game, the one from which an instance of Glitchtrap had already escaped, which he told would be easy to obtain given how dire the circumstances are for Fazbear Entertainment. Soon, they arrived at the Fazbear Entertainment's office building, where Mr. Averus, one of the corporation's leading executives, explained that they decided to use another copy of the game as a base for all other mass-produced copies, the one from where Glitchtrap had escaped. Later, Mike, noticing that they are having a trouble with the search for the new video game developer, decides to bring Nightmare, who took human form and posed as a private video game developer under the name Matt R. Nacht, who agreed to work on the VR game without focusing on other projects completely for free in exchange for gaining absolute autonomy over the game, allowing him to implement any change he may find necessary. Though Mr. Averus was hesitant to give complete control over the game, he still agreed out of desperation, allowing Nightmare to take complete control over the video game's development.
As Nightmare and Mike drove back to Schmidts' home, the demon lord explained that they needed the copy of the game to go through it like a fine-toothed comb to ensure that Glitchtrap is gone from the game completely, and once they ensure that his presence is non-existent, he'll incorporate multiple failsafes to ensure that Glitchtrap won't be able to ever return, such as including Nightmare animatronics in the game "as a perfect feature to include for a Halloween release". Once they obtained the copy owned by Glitchtrap's victim, Nightmare, Mike and Jeremy (since he was the ghost child who managed to sense Glitchtrap's true intentions) prowled through entire game, confirming that Glitchtrap is gone from that copy of the game. However, Nightmare discovered and explained to the Schmidts that Glitchtrap could consolidate his essence not just by collecting 16 Tapes, but also when the player goes into the room behind the curtains of Pizza Party's final level, where he would swap places with the player, leaving Glitchtrap to trap them on the Show Stage while he would escape in their body. Once they finished their explanation, Infernal Bonnie contacted the Nightmare, reporting to him everything he discovered about Glitchtrap's true nature, learning that if Glitchtrap possesses a person, he infects their soul, slowly corrupting the person who does not have enough willpower to resist the corruption into obeying his every single whim, and that the corruption can be reversed either by direct application of holy light or hellfire or by ripping Glitchtrap off with hellfire-imbued claws. Pleased with the news, Nightmare told Infernal Bonnie to provide him report once he's done, which he'll present to Old Man Consequences...but not before learning with irritation that his demonic servant had initiated Sterilization Protocol Omega (setting the entire lab on fire with hellfire).
About a month later, Nightmare completed the reworked VR game, and already began to mass-produce it. Introducing the first copy to Mike Schmidt and his ghostly children, he brought Mike and Jeremy back into the game to explain to them all three endings of the revised game, as well as the new features that he introduced to the game. He also explained that he found the information about Glitchtrap's possession victim and hid it thoroughly within the new "Curse of Dreadbear" levels so that Fazbear Entertainment won't remove it on sight, allowing the information to be spread across the public before the corporation would do anything about it. However, he refused to explain the details to Schmidts, instead deciding to let them find everything out for themselves, wishing to let them enjoy the fruits of his labor, though he did tell Nightmare Foxy to assist Mike in unlocking the secret he hid in the final level of "Curse of Dreadbear" DLC. The secret Nightmare hid turned out to be a feminine white rabbit mask, similar to Glitchtrap, which, when the player wears it and looks at Glitchtrap's plushie, played the mysterious female voice, which undoubtedly belonged to the victim of Glitchtrap's possession, thus giving the Schmidts a clue that would help them find Glitchtrap's victim. Once the Schmidts found the secret, Nightmare allowed the Nightmares to withdraw their presences from their copy of the game, before commenting that now they will allow the Schmidts to handle the problem, as Mike and his family of ghosts now have to prove that their determination and dedication to stopping Glitchtrap's victim is genuine, choosing to observe their efforts until his help will be needed.
After the Schmidts had their winter vacation at New York and managed to prevent Fazbear Entertainment from partnering up with Eisensteel, Nightmare visited them in human form, revealing that he has some business to attend to on Earth, but decided to visit Mike and his ghostly family beforehand. He told them that he made some adjustments to his Ultimate Custom Night torture session and decided to let Schmidts have their fun with tormenting Afton, only for the ghost children to reveal that they decided to move on from making Afton suffer, having learned that hating the killer and wishing to make him suffer only kept them chained to the painful past. Nightmare understood their reasoning, but added that he decided to add them the opportunity to learn why William Afton became the monster he is and chose to make the ghost children suffer back when they were alive. Hesitantly, the Schmidts took the option, setting all animatronics to 20 AI level to trigger Nightmare's adjustments.
As it was revealed, the adjustments turned out to be the inclusion of Mike Schmidt's dark aspect given form, created from Mike's inner darkness that Nightmare harvested back from the night before Fazbear Entertainment was revealed to be alive. After the replica of Mike's dark aspect judged William Afton for all of his sins, revealing to real Mike and the ghost children that Afton killed the kids simply for the sake of discovering immortality for his self-benefit, he then proceeded to summon XOR, who brought in every single animatronic that existed in UCN torture chamber, all of whom gave William a gruesome and agonizing death. Nightmare then proceeded to reveal that Afton would still be conscious and feel all the pain afterwards, even as a mangled pile of flesh and bone, disturbing the ghost children. The ghosts reinstated that they will no longer participate in tortures and will leave Nightmare and his family to torturing the murderer, but will let him rot in Hell, stating that they have to worry about Glitchtrap nowadays. Nightmare agreed with them, but then he clarified that, as justified the Schmidts were in ensuring that Eisensteel declines Fazbear Entertainment's offer, they still severely miscalculated on how to deal with the corrupt corporation, and that the next threat they have to deal with will come very soon and is going to be much more dangerous than anything they'll anticipate.
Nightmare's warning was proven right, as Fazbear Entertainment ended up partnering up with the smaller, less scrupulous corporation, where Glitchtrap's possession victim worked, allowing her to tamper with the resident animatronics. When Fazbear Entertainment sent Mike a Toy Bonnie animatronic for a test run, the animatronic ended up breaking his house and attacking him at night, breaking his arm and leg and sending him to a hospital. Once Mike and his family managed to delay the release of Fazbear Entertainment's Special Delivery program, Nightmare tried to call Mike, but since he wasn't available, the demon called him through the landline phone. Susie was the one to pick up. Nightmare asked her why Mike wasn't picking up, as he was trying to contact him for a long time, and to vent her frustrations, Susie revealed to him everything she knew about Fazbear Entertainment's Special Delivery program, Toy Bonnie's attack, and Mike's new plan to counteract Fazbear Entertainment to prevent such incidents from repeating. With acknowledgement, Nightmare offered the Schmidt family his condolences for Mike's plight and, enraged by Fazbear Entertainment's idiocy, decided to take matters into his own hands before hanging up.
With Old Man Consequences' permission, Nightmare invaded the minds of the half of Fazbear Entertainment's executives at night, Mr. Averus included. Revealing to executives that Fazbear Entertainment ended up creating an abomination from the soul of a man who angered Heaven and Hell alike, that he was the one who destroyed their VR game warehouses, and that one Glitchtrap had survived, possessed a person and infiltrated their corporation, he subjecting them to torture at the hands of his fellow Nightmares before torturing them himself. Afterwards, he presented the executives an ultimatum: that they will continue collaborating with Mike Schmidt and ensure that his plans in stopping Glitchtrap's possession victim would be a success, that they will take no action against Mike, and that they will never tell anyone about his arrival, not even sharing their plight with their fellow victims. Once they agreed to his conditions, Nightmare departed, ensuring that the future events would play in Mike Schmidt's favor.
