Nightmare Fredbear is a minor antagonist-turned-villainous ally of Five Nights at Freddy's fanfiction Mike's New Ghostly Family, by Archcommander-Tenebros.
He is one of three Greater Nightmares, a trio of demon lords who serve as leaders of the Nightmares, a clan of demons who took form of twisted, monstrous animatronics of Freddy Fazbear's franchise as a testament to the corruption of innocense associated with the franchise. Together with Nightmarionne, he serves as one of Nightmare's primary enforcers.
Appearance[]
Nightmare Fredbear takes form of monstrous version of Fredbear animatronic. He is golden-orange in color and wears purple tophat and bowtie with black buttons on the chest. His eyes are burning red and his mouth is full of sharp teeth, with his belly possessing a second mouth, and the tips of his hands end with razor-sharp claws. His overall appearance is noted to strongly resemble Nightmare.
His true demonic form was not described in detail, so it's impossible to deduce its appearance. It was stated to be a hideous, monstrous abomination that would drive a weak mind insane and strike fear even into the heart of a seasoned average demon lord.
His human form, encountered by the Schmidts during their vacation at Las Vegas, resembles a handsome-looking man with dirty-blonde hair and brown eyes that are almost maroon in color, wearing a suit that matches his hair color.
Personality[]
Nightmare Fredbear, much like all other Nightmares, is sadistic, cruel and malevolent, enjoying tormenting damned souls, indulging himself in acts of wickedness and taking great delight in seeing others suffer. In stark contrast to Nightmarionne's affable personality and Nightmare's capacity of respecting those who prove themselves, Nightmare Fredbear displays very few benevolent or eccentric qualities, with his politeness doing nothing to mask his malevolence.
Despite his vileness, he still possesses some slivers of honor, as when he challenged Mike Schmidt to a high-stakes game of poker in Las Vegas, he strictly forbade him from cheating via using his ghostly children, and though he influenced the luck to make functional hands, he did this to every player in the game, not just himself, to ensure that a fair and proper game would be possible. Once he was beaten, he accepted his loss in stride and came to acknowledge Mike as a worthy opponent, developing some respect for the man, though without the sense of camaraderie that his Greater Nightmare brothers formed with him.
History[]
Nightmare Fredbear and his fellow Nightmares were ruling over lower circles of Hell for thousands of years, their rule uncontested even with seven in their numbers and their names feared all over Hell. When vengeance-filled Evan Afton, killed by the Bite of '83 and his father unplugging his life support, wanted his brother and accidental killer Michael to suffer for everything he put Evan through, Old Man Consequences, the guardian of afterlife antechamber known as the Crimson Lake, sent the Nightmares after Michael, trapping him in cursed dreams that he'll be unable to wake up unless he survives until 6 AM, with his deaths resetting the nights. Nightmare Fredbear and his fellow Nightmares took forms of monstrous Freddy Fazbear animatronics for this torture, forms they kept even after the torture cycles as a testament to the corruption of innocense associated with Fazbear's franchise.
Nightmare Fredbear appeared at the fifth night, his visage horrifying Michael due to his resemblance to the same animatronic that was responsible for Evan's death and crushing him with guilt over his crimes against his brother. The demonic animatronic mocked him for the fact that he mourned his brother now, but never showed this love in his life before, instead abusing and tormenting him for years, before he began to continuously and gruesomely murder him throughout the night in his cursed dream, also joining the other Nightmares in his torments at the sixth night, replacing all of the lesser Nightmares after 4 AM, before Nightmare took over his role at the seventh and the eighth nights.
Once William Afton perished, his soul ended up in the Nightmares' possession, with the Nightmares torturing him to their content. And ever since he lost his wager against Nightmare, the torture was greatly amplified, now that the minimal Heaven's protections he had were withdrawn from him. Nightmare Fredbear and his fellow Nightmares didn't interact with Mike Schmidt and his family, instead preferring to tend to their own businesses or subtly irritating the Schmidts with adding stroke of bad luck to their games.
It wasn't until the Schmidts went on their first vacation to Las Vegas when they finally met Nightmare Fredbear face-to-face, the demon taking the human form and enjoying the activities at the City of Sin. Desiring to see whether Mike Schmidt was worthy of Nightmare's respect, Nightmare Fredbear decided to challenge him to a game of poker, subtly influencing the luck to ensure that everyone would be able to make functional hands and telling Mike to keep the ghosts away from his side of table, making his disdain for cheaters clear. Soon, the game began, with both Mike and Nightmare Fredbear constantly raising the stakes in thousands with nearly every turn. Though Nightmare Fredbear managed to score a first win with a full house against Mike's flush, Schmidt refused to surrender, and the game continued, with neither of them outperforming each other. Once he grew weary, Nightmare Fredbear decided to make gentlemen's agreement with Schmidt, with both of them betting all-in. Mike accepted the challenge, and soon, Nightmare Fredbear revealed his four of a kind with kings, only to be countered by Mike's straight flush, allowing Mike to score the final victory. Satisfied with the game, Nightmare Fredbear admitted that Mike was worthy of his brother's respect after all, congratulated the man on the good game and left, returning back to Hell to share a tale of his encounter with Mike to Nightmare.
One day, Vucarik decided to kickstart a rebellion against Lucifer, seeking to overthrow him as a ruler of Hell. Cooperating with William Afton, he distracted the Nightmares with diversion attack, viciously injured the younger Nightmares, stole their essences, and gave them to Afton before sending him onto the surface world. Outraged, the Nightmares shedded their animatronic forms and prepared to join the battle against Vucarik's forces, with Nightmare giving Schmidt a warning about Afton's attack and revenge plans before joining the civil war as well.
Soon, Nightmare Fredbear, Nightmarionne and the lesser Nightmares joined the battle, taking the side of Lucifer's loyalists and status-quo supporters who knew that Vucarik's rebellion was nothing but a power grab and turning the tide of battle in their favor. As the battle raged on, Nightmare himself joined the battle, destroying Vucarik's army with three spells and crushing the would-be usurper's rebellion. Nightmare Fredbear and Nightmarionne prevented the usurper's escape, and Nightmare threw Vucarik's body to all other demons to torture. Afterwards, the Greater Nightmares reverted back to their animatronic forms and returned to the mortal world, into Schmidt's house.
Nightmare and Nightmare Fredbear travelled up to Schmidt's bedroom, where Mike was fighting against demonically-empowered William Afton inside his mind while Nightmarionne was entertaining the ghost children by playing a game with them. While Nightmare entered Mike's mind to assist him in his time of need, Nightmare Fredbear remained in the bedroom with Charlie, remaining outside of Mike's mind in case of preventing his escape and observing the battle through the portal. As the battle between Schmidt and Afton raged on, Nightmare Fredbear was very entertained by Mike's viciousness in battle, and even more pleased when he saw Mike gruesomely torture Afton's soul, apathetic to Charlie's horror at seeing her new dad being so cruel and brutal, though he was disappointed when Serene, the soul of Mike's mother, interrupted the torture session.
Once Afton was beaten and depowered, Nightmare took his broken and mutilated shade and carried it outside into the backyard of Schmidt's mansion, throwing him into the portal to Hell that opened in the pool. Soon, Nightmare, Nightmarionne and Nightmare Fredbear turned to leave, with Nightmare, as a sign of respect and gratitude for entertainment, bestowing upon Mike a blessing known as the Anathema Curse that would make Afton suffer should he ever approach Schmidt. After Mike forgave Nightmare for attacking his family earlier, the demon lord prepared to depart to Hell, giving Schmidt a warrior's salute, a closest he ever displayed to acknowledging someone as an equal, surprising Nightmare Fredbear and Nightmarionne, before all three demons returned to Hell.
Some time after William Afton was brought back to Hell, the Nightmares discussed the newest method of Afton's tortures, with Nightmare proposing to make him suffer in a similar way to all the nightguards that died at Freddy Fazbear-related establishments. Nightmare Fredbear expressed his doubts that the torture would be effective, believing that a death by animatronic won't be as effective as other tortures, but Nightmare clarified that the torture method won't be meant to just make him feel pain, but to crush his arrogance by making him the Hell's laughingstock. Afterwards, he informed his fellow Nightmares to conduct research on all animatronics related to Freddy Fazbear or Circus Baby's franchises while he would design the layout of the place that would serve as Afton's torture chamber, and force him to relive the suffering of the many nightguards of the pizzerias, making him fend off against all animatronics that were created by the tainted franchises.
Much later, when Fazbear Entertainment resurrected itself and scanned Springtrap's circuit boards to make their VR game, inadvertently creating Glitchtrap, Nightmare Fredbear was enraged by the fact that Afton managed to find a way to cheat death again. After assisting Nightmare in performing the ritual that would destroy all copies of VR game that contained Glitchtrap, Nightmare Fredbear and Nightmarionne were assigned with the task of overseeing Nightmare Bonnie's research on Glitchtrap's nature and abilities.
Once Nightmare gained complete autonomy over the VR game development, he implemented multiple failsaves to ensure that Glitchtrap would never be able to reinfect the game ever again, including adding Nightmare animatronics in the game, the files of whom were partially imbued with their demonic essences to ensure they'd be able to track down all traces of Glitchtrap they could find and destroy them. Nightmare Fredbear was one of the animatronics implemented into the game, being able to communicate with Mike Schmidt by possessing his in-programmed construct. At first, he entered the room in a similar way to Nightmarionne and talked to Mike, explaining that Nightmare took the opportunity to make the presence of his clan known to people of Earth, even though it's through the fictional medium, and was enraged by Fazbear Entertainment's incompetency, even willing to side with good against incompetency-driven evil just to see their plans fail. Afterwards, he told Mike that he and his family will soon meet the rest of the Nightmares, but not before jumpscaring him to start the game proper, taunting Mike afterwards with the fact that the knowledge of how he tormented his namesake won't help him in beating his level. Mike replayed the level, and though he failed the first attempt, with Nightmare Fredbear taunting that his brother will be disappointed by his performance if that was his best shot, Mike managed to beat his level on the second try, and Nightmare Fredbear admitted that Schmidt was worthy of his respect after all, though not before boasting that if Nightmare added himself into the game, he'd push even Mike to his limits. Once Mike Schmidt and his ghostly children have completed the game and found the secret hidden by Nightmare in "Curse of Dreadbear" DLC, the Nightmares withdrew their presences from the game. Nightmare Fredbear commented that they still have a lot of work to do to minimalize the amount of damage done by Glitchtrap's victim, and when Nightmarionne asked will Nightmare no longer provide the Schmidts his assistance, both Nightmare and Nightmare Fredbear clarified that they have done their jobs, and now it's up to the Schmidts to pull their weight and prove that their determination and commitment to foiling Glitchtrap's plans is genuine.
Quotes[]
“ | Nightmare Fredbear: LOOKING FOR MY KIN? THEY HAVE BEEN RELIEVED FROM OUR HUNT FOR THIS PARTICULAR NIGHT. BUT I ASSURE YOU, WHEN I AM THROUGH WITH YOU, YOU WILL BEG FOR THEM TO COME BACK! [Nightmare Fredbear materializes in front of Michael, with the teen screaming at his sight.] Nightmare Fredbear: I MUST THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS HOSPITALITY. YOUR BROTHER'S HEAD MADE FOR SUCH A DELIGHTFUL FEAST! [Michael gets reduced to tears by Nightmare Fredbear's comment.] Nightmare Fredbear: YOU WEEP FOR HIM NOW. BUT WHERE WAS THIS LOVE, THIS COMPASSION, WHEN HE WAS STILL ALIVE? TELL ME, MICHAEL AFTON. IN THE DAYS, WEEKS, EVEN MONTHS LEADING UP TO THE DAY HIS FATE WAS SEALED, DID YOU SHOW HIM EVEN A SINGLE ACT OF KINDNESS? DID YOU EVEN ONCE ALLOW HIM TO FEEL SOMETHING OTHER THAN FEAR AND YOUR MALICE CRUSHING HIS SPIRIT? Michael Afton: I...I...I... Nightmare Fredbear: YOU NEVER SAW A BROTHER, DID YOU? ALL YOU EVER SAW WAS A WEAKLING UNWORTHY TO BREATHE THE SAME AIR AS YOU! Michael Afton: That's not what I think of Evan! He's my brother! He's someone I should have...I should have cared for from...from the beginning... He deserved someone better than...than me... Nightmare Fredbear: HOW RIGHT YOU ARE. HE DESERVED BETTER THAN SCUM LIKE YOU. THE RUINATION OF HIS BIRTHDAY WAS MERELY THE CULMINATION OF COUNTLESS DAYS FILLED WITH YOUR WICKEDNESS AND HIS FEAR. AND YOU MUST LIVE WITH THIS TRUTH FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY. IT'S QUITE FASCINATING HOW CRUEL THE WORLD REALLY IS, ISN'T IT? THE MORE YOU HATE SOMEONE, THE MORE YOU DESPISE THEIR EXISTENCE WITH EVERY FIBER OF YOUR BEING, THE EASIER IT IS TO TEAR THEIR LIFE FROM THEM AND LEAVE ONLY A LIFELESS CORPSE BEHIND. BUT NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU CHERISH AND CARE FOR THOSE YOU LOVE, YOU CANNOT BRING THEM BACK FROM THE DEAD, NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY. BUT THE LAWS OF THE WORLD DON'T APPLY HERE, DO THEY? AFTER ALL, WE CAN PUT YOU BACK TOGETHER, AND THEN TEAR YOU APART AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN! [Nightmare Fredbear laughs and lunges at Michael, grabbing him with his claws.] Nightmare Fredbear: LET US SEE HOW MANY TIMES I CAN TEAR YOU APART. HEH HEH HEH HEH...HEH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! [Nightmare Fredbear pulls Michael towards his mouth, crushing his head with his jaws.] |

“ | Nightmare Fredbear: I SEE THAT YOU RECOGNIZE ME FOR WHAT I TRULY AM, MORTAL. BUT THAT ISN'T REALLY MUCH OF A SURPRISE, CONSIDERING THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN ACQUAINTED WITH MY BROTHER. Mike Schmidt: What are you doing here? Nightmare Fredbear: WHY, THE SAME THING THAT EVERYONE ELSE IS HERE, OF COURSE! (laughs) LAS VEGAS IS THE CITY OF SIN, AFTER ALL. WHAT BETTER PLACE FOR A DEMON IN DISGUISE TO ENJOY A RARE NIGHT OF FREEDOM? I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU KEEP YOUR LITTLE GHOST BRATS AWAY FROM MY SIDE OF TABLE. I DON'T REACT WELL TO CHEATERS. [The void Mike and Nightmare Fredbear were present in dissipates, with Nightmare Fredbear reverting to his human disguise.] Nightmare Fredbear (in human form): I do so enjoy a good game. Be sure not to disappoint me. |

Mike Schmidt: That was a lovely attempt to cripple my morale. Too bad it was also equally pathetic. Here's some news for you, jackass. We're only just getting started. Nightmare Fredbear: Good! I'd be very disappointed indeed if you broke down after a single defeat. |

“ | Nightmare Fredbear: I grow weary of this game. Why don't we make a...gentleman's agreement, Schmidt? All in, both of us. Right here and now. The dealer: But what if you don't have enough money to match each other's all-ins? Nightmare Fredbear: Do you not see our piles, you myopic imbecile? Does it really matter what the exact numbers are? Do you really want to waste everyone's time trying to sort through all this drivel? Mike Schmidt: I'll agree only if I get to see the three cards first. Only an idiot would charge in without even bothering to see the entire hand first. Nightmare Fredbear: Understandable. Deal the cards. (puts his pot) All-in, as we agreed. Mike Schmidt: As we agreed. |

So why don't you take your kings...and go fuck yourself. [Mike Schmidt reveals his straight flush, scoring a final victory and collecting his winnings. Nightmare Fredbear remains silent for a moment, before bursting into laughter.] Nightmare Fredbear: I always wondered what my brother saw in you that night. He told me you were something special indeed. And now that I have seen what makes you so interesting for myself, I freely admit that he was correct. [Nightmare Fredbear offers Mike a handshake, with the latter reluctantly accepting it.] Nightmare Fredbear: Thank you, Schmidt, for a most entertaining evening. I will have quite the tale to tell my brother when I return home. [Nightmare Fredbear leaves.] |
