Show mercy? I'll show you all mercy.
~ Nightmare Steve to his assistant before killing a Yellow Steve.
If you thought it was hard to keep this world safe now, you aren't even ready for what comes next. This is JUST the beginning..
~ Nightmare Steve's last words before he is killed for the first time.

Nightmare Steve is a major antagonist in the 2020-21 web series Rainbow Quest, the first installment of Steve Cinematic Universe. He serves as the main antagonist of Season 1, one of the two main antagonists (alongside Reverse Steve) of Season 2 and a posthumous antagonist in subsequent seasons.

Formerly the self-proclaimed king of the most powerful Yellow Steve kingdom, Nightmare Steve is a ruthless, megalomaniacal tyrant who desires to take advantage of the ongoing spread of the Darkness to fuel his own powers and crush anyone who stands in his way. This insane plot brings him into conflict with FavreMySabre, who challenges his rule and seeks to bring him down. Additionally, he is also the former de-facto leader of the Darkness, Dark Steve's former boss and Sabre and Rainbow Steve's arch-nemesis.

He is based off his original counterpart.

Personality

Well, we call him the Nightmare King for a reason..
~ Yellow Steve describing Nightmare Steve.
Everyone has their own ways of trying to create a solution, but your solution was definitely the most evil one, man. While I understand that you were thinking couldn't be stopped, i-it can!
~ Sabre to Nightmare Steve, acknowledging his noble goals but also his twisted form of achieving them.

Even before his first physical appearance, even brief mentions of the Nightmare King's name sends shivers down peoples' spines due to his cruel nature and frightening demeanor. When his presence is first made known, Yellow Steve is utterly terrified at the mere mention of his name due to how ruthless he is, commenting that they "call him the Nightmare King for a reason". That reason is revealed when Nightmare Steve first appears, simply asking for his supplies scares his people as they have a feeling that they'll know what he'll do if they fail him. When confronted by Sabre, Nightmare Steve is appalled by his presence and claims that he doesn't need help from someone who isn't even a Steve, ignoring many of Sabre's points about how easily the second strongest Yellow Kingdom fell. Nightmare Steve was also not concerned in the slightest when it came to people fearing him, as not only did he use it to his advantage to control his people, but he just didn't care in general and refused to comment on peoples' emotional states when they were clearly uncomfortable.

Although Nightmare Steve detested Sabre and what he stood for, he was willing to work with him, although this later turned out to be a ruse and nothing more than a selfish attempt at gaining immortality and immunity to the Darkness, proving that although he cared about his people, his second and more prominent concern was with gaining power and retaining his influence over others using any means necessary. He was shallow, selfish, arrogant and manipulative, only seeing others as means to an end to complete his twisted goals. Nightmare Steve's cruelty and heartlessness was amplified even further by his testing facility where he kidnapped, imprisoned and experimented on multiple Yellow Steves in order to create a vessel for the Darkness.

Despite his care for his people, he was not above committing cold-blooded murder to ensure that no one could expose him for the monster that he was, as doing so would make people rebel against him and strip him of his power and authority. Nightmare Steve seems to be a stickler for violence instead of reason; demonstrated well when the Yellow Assistant begged for him to show the Yellow Escapee mercy, prompting him to state that he'd show them all mercy before pushing the escapee to his death, claiming that he'd betray him and using his death to his advantage to threaten his assistant. Nightmare Steve was perfectly okay with threatening his people with death if they failed him, and it can be assumed based on his brutal nature that he'd keep his word if they let him down. A clear psychopath to the core, Nightmare Steve manipulated, killed, stole and lied to become the strongest.

Nightmare Steve's obsession with power proved to be even more prominent when he was preparing to create Dark Steve, as prior to this he had mastered out a plan to create chaos from within the kingdom, slowly giving hints as to his true nature which everyone but Sabre turned a blind eye to as they weren't aware of it. The siege he'd cause would result in many Yellow Steves flocking to the inside of the palace, allowing the Darkness to break through the walls and infect them all, furthering Nightmare Steve's twisted goals of what he perceived to be doing the right thing to keep his people safe. Although he was a master tactician, he was not above gloating about his plans and showed a more relaxed, yet smug side to him when confronted by Sabre, but still retained his knowledge of both his own plans and his assistant's, knowing that someone had informed Sabre about his plans. Ultimately, he came to see Sabre as little more than a bug to be crushed underfoot to keep others in line, and never saw him a threat and more of a hindrance.

The Yellow Kingdom's fall pushed Nightmare Steve into becoming even more barbaric and ruthless, as he was now doing the dirty work instead of relying on the Darkness or Dark Steve and was now getting invested in conflict. Although, now that he had to directly get involved, his fuse grew shorter and shorter, now less reliant on henchman and more on himself. Although his patience was running out, his manipulative and tricky nature increased, with him able to get Sabre to follow him with only some hesitation and allowing Nightmare Steve to easily overpower and destroy him, albeit temporarily. With Sabre out of the way, Nightmare Steve embarked on a destructive spree, eliminating the Orange Village entirely and showing just how destructive and villainous he is.

With the Orange Steves escaping his factory, Nightmare Steve's temper was lost, setting his sights on killing Sabre and his entire group. However, his attempts were failed by the Darkness, the people he chose to work with, as they began to overpower his mind and weaken him. Nightmare Steve's dangerous mental state was even beginning to terrify Dark Steve, an entity created to not only serve Nightmare Steve but was also the fusion between Darkness and a Steve. Minutes before his death, Nightmare Steve seemed almost nihilistic, although not believing that life was meaningless, he saw all attempts in stopping the Darkness as being in vain, which was why he even chose to work with the Darkness in the first place, seeing optimism as a weak thought that gave people false hope. He looked at everything surrounding the battle against the Darkness in a negative light, showing that in actuality, he feared the Darkness. Just before his death, Nightmare Steve was incredibly cryptic, claiming that his destruction was "just the beginning".

Despite being one of the most evil, vile and sadistic Steves to ever exist, Nightmare Steve's ambitions and intentions were motivated out of genuine care to protect his people, albeit through extreme methods by corrupting his people and join the Darkness so he and the rest of the Yellow Steves would survive their wrath and be peacefully incorporated into their forces without being hunted down by them. His form of protection was extremely twisted, and at times, hypocritical, as he would on occasion threaten and even kill his own people if they disobeyed him. Although he had turned to destructive and murderous ways, he did genuinely want to do the right thing and save his people, something which Sabre himself acknowledged during the former's final moments, almost lending sympathy to the monster Nightmare Steve had allowed himself to become. During his final moments, it seemed heavily implied that Nightmare Steve didn't enjoy what he was doing and that his moments of glee, sadism and arrogance were a product of being one step closer to him and his people being spared.

As Nightmare Steve became even more enveloped and corrupted by the Darkness due to Void Steve's influence, he became even more mentally unstable, deranged and borderline insane, with his motivations becoming more fanatical thanks to Void's influence (and true desires for "peace") and fully becoming taken over by the Darkness. In contrast to his previous thinking that the Darkness couldn't be stopped, which caused him to join it out of fear, he now had the epiphany that the Darkness would always win in the end now that he had been completely brainwashed by it. Not only had his psyche become more damaged than it already was, his ego had grown to astronomical heights, becoming incredibly overconfident and talking in a sophisticated, yet snarky and sarcastic tone. Nightmare Steve was incredibly confident in his and the Darkness' ability to succeed, putting his faith in the Darkness and ordering them like a cult of drones who followed his every command.

Once confronted by Galaxy Steve, Nightmare Steve seemed surprised, but nonetheless was still confident that he'd easily be able to overpower the galactic Indigo Steve with ease. His fight with Galaxy Steve consisted of numerous insults and verbal attacks aimed directly at Galaxy Steve, calling him weak and letting his arrogance skyrocket as he constantly claimed to be the superior fighter. However, his personality shifted as soon as Galaxy Steve used his full power, frightening Nightmare Steve as he tried his hardest to beat him, but to no avail. Although he was at the brink of death, Nightmare Steve used his last moments to gloat, claiming that his task had been fulfilled and that he was contempt with dying as long as it allowed the Darkness to succeed.

Overall, Nightmare Steve was a heartless, selfish, tyrannical dictator who's desires to do what he saw as necessary and beneficial for his people lead him down a path of destruction towards becoming part of the hive of monsters he had tried so desperately to control.

Biography

Early Life

Nightmare Steve was originally a Yellow Steve and the assistant to the Yellow King, serving as his right-hand man. Nightmare Steve was alerted of the release of the Darkness, an ancient evil sealed within a temple years ago by the Hero. Having heard about the Darkness and its cataclysmic nature, Nightmare Steve saw no point in trying to fight the Darkness and decided it would be best to join it instead, as it would give him the opportunity to infect and spare his people from their wrath as well as allowing him to outlive everyone not affiliated with his kingdom. Nightmare Steve immediately became obsessed with gaining as much power as possible to protect himself and his people, and, in an act of treason, Nightmare Steve stole the Yellow Crystal from right under the Yellow King's nose and seized control.

After gaining the Yellow Crystal, Nightmare Steve came into contact with the Darkness and managed to absorb some, becoming one with the Darkness. To prevent it from spreading and corrupting his mind, Nightmare Steve used the powers of the Yellow Crystal to combat the Darkness and hold it off, managing to keep it under his control. Nightmare Steve eventually confronted the Yellow King, and although the Yellow King was resilient, Nightmare Steve threatened to destroy the kingdom and hurt his people if the Yellow King tried anything, forcing him to flee the kingdom. With the Yellow King now out of the way, Nightmare Steve began his rule, manipulating the Yellow Steves into thinking that the Yellow King and anyone else who deserted the kingdom in favor of the Yellow King were rebelling against him.

Working with the Darkness

With the Darkness now merged with him, Nightmare Steve's reign of terror began, with many of his people referring to him as the "Nightmare King" due to his monstrous appearance and constant abuse and intimidation of his people. Alongside his tyrannical rule, Nightmare Steve's actions became more and more monstrous as he began kidnapping Yellow Steves and imprisoning them in his secret facility, even managing to capture a fragment of the Darkness and began experimenting so he could both use Steves to become vessels of the Darkness and experimenting with the fragment in order to solidify and condense it so it could fully possess a Steve. At some point, Nightmare Steve decided to fully work with the Darkness and aided them in their numerous attacks.

Some time after the Darkness was released, Nightmare Steve arrived at a Yellow Steve camp where he asked his assistant for unknown supplies. Unknown to him, a Yellow Steve, Orange Steve and a human, Sabre, were listening to him from behind a tent. As he's receiving more miscellaneous supplies from his assistant, Sabre stepped from behind a tent and confronted the king, catching him off-guard and surprising him. Sabre stated that he watched the siege of the second most powerful Yellow Kingdom and how it fall almost instantly, trying to reason with Nightmare Steve by stating that he could tell he was scared of falling to the Darkness. Nightmare Steve claimed that he was doing what was right for his people, irritated that he was receiving advice from someone who isn't a Steve. Although he was understandable in not trusting Sabre, Sabre stated that he was immune to the Darkness and was working to help the Steves combat the threat of the Darkness, demanding Nightmare Steve to stop terrifying his people, pointing out how clearly uncomfortable and frightened his assistant was.

Nightmare Steve refused Sabre's help, flat-out ignoring and brushing off his assistant's concern by claiming that he was okay. Sabre was mortified, denouncing Nightmare Steve for using fear to lead his people, and that instead of leading his people he was controlling them with fear, and was nowhere near close to being a leader due to his sheer lack of compassion. Sabre advised that Nightmare Steve remove the Darkness from within himself to protect himself and his people, but he once again refused, claiming that he'd "do no such thing" and revealing the Yellow Crystal to be in his possession. Sabre was disgusted seeing that someone so heartless had the crystal, claiming that Yellow Steve would be a better fit for a ruler, but Nightmare Steve brushed it off, stating that he was going to keep it no matter what.

As Sabre begged for Nightmare Steve to stop fighting his mental battle against the Darkness, Nightmare Steve decided that enough was enough and demanded his assistant to get rid of Sabre. Yellow Steve stepped in, blocking the assistant and revealing that Sabre was on a quest to collect the crystals to create the Hero. Amused that he'd want the Yellow Crystal, he viewed Sabre's attempts at gathering his crystal to be attempting to steal it, ignoring that Sabre was clearly upset with how he was ruling and trying to convince him to be better. Nightmare Steve merely mocked Sabre, claiming that he couldn't do anything against him, although he decided to spare him. claiming that he could be "valuable", but denounced him from showing his face around his territory of people as he bid him farewell, asking his assistant to escort him and Orange Steve out of the camp as Yellow Steve remained behind. Unknown to Nightmare Steve, his assistant was conspiring with Sabre to retrieve the crystal and convincing him that things would be better.

Capturing Sabre

Although Nightmare Steve was not keen on Sabre and took at instant dislike to him due to him challenging his rule, Nightmare Steve was intrigued by Sabre revealing he was immune to the Darkness infecting him, and realized that if he gained Sabre's immunity he could virtually become immortal and immune to the Darkness controlling him, which would allow him to not carry the Yellow Crystal at all times. Deciding that cohering Sabre into working with him would be the best plan of action, Nightmare Steve teleported to the Rainbow Hub and calmed Sabre down, stating that he just wanted to propose an offer and talk. Getting straight to the point, Nightmare Steve stated that he wanted to give Sabre an offer. Although Sabre was conflicted as he sees Nightmare Steve as a lunatic, Orange Steve remained optimistic and decides to give it a shot. Building up confidence, Sabre allowed Nightmare Steve to talk as he explains that he wants to work with Sabre in order to find an immunity to the Darkness.

Sabre was immediately hesitant, which turned into full-on distrust as Nightmare Steve stated that his reasons for wanting immunity were none of Sabre's concern, although Sabre viewed them as such due to his distaste for Nightmare Steve. Sabre explained that he was immune for reasons he didn't understand and told Nightmare Steve that he knew he only wanted immunity for himself so he could absorb more Darkness and become even more powerful. Becoming frustrated, Nightmare Steve stated that he wouldn't be taking no for an answer, but Sabre decided that he wouldn't take Nightmare Steve's offer and demanded him to leave, causing Nightmare Steve to gloat about his power, although Sabre would rather focus on his morals rather than the amount of power he had. Sabre once again turns him down, and in retaliation, Nightmare Steve immobilizes both him and Orange Steve, commenting on Sabre's refusal to help as him being obnoxious and telling him that he doesn't have a choice or say in the matter.

Nightmare Steve decided to teleport Orange Steve to his facility, making it seem as though he'd been destroyed, distressing Sabre and prompting him to call Nightmare Steve a monster as he demanded him to bring Orange Steve back as he broke out of his immobilization. Deciding enough was enough, Nightmare Steve teleported Sabre to his facility and welcomed him. Sabre once again refused to help him out, but Nightmare Steve was no longer expecting him to help, deciding to experiment on Sabre directly to figure out his immunity as he headed out. Unbeknownst to him, Sabre discovered Orange Steve was also imprisoned alongside a Yellow Steve and escaped by using supplies left in his cell. However, after he had left, Nightmare Steve returned to the Rainbow Hub and stole the "Orange Crystal", which was actually a fake created by Orange Steve.

Preparing the siege

Although he was unaware that Sabre and Orange Steve had escaped, Nightmare Steve was made aware of the Yellow Escapee escaping his facility and he was re-captured, this time being brought to Nightmare Steve directly at his kingdom by his assistant. Sabre and Orange Steve managed to break in using golden armor to disguise as guards and watched as the Yellow Escapee begged Nightmare Steve for mercy, alongside the assistant, advising that he should show some sympathy. Baffled that they wanted to show him mercy, Nightmare Steve stated that he'd "show [them] all mercy" as he hit the Yellow Escapee off the platform they were on and let him fall down the bottomless pit to his death, terrifying the assistant. Claiming that "someone who betrays once will betray again", he asked his assistant if he would every betray him, with the assistant just about managing to claim that he'd never betray his king, satisfying Nightmare Steve.

Unbeknownst to Nightmare Steve, the Orange Crystal he had acquired was a fake, and that if he used the crystal it would explode, killing himself, everybody else in the kingdom and destroying the kingdom itself. Deciding that it was time to use it, Nightmare Steve was about to use the "Orange Crystal", but was halted by his assistant, who advised him to prepare himself before trying to use it. Seeing that he'd better prepare, he handed the crystal to his assistant and tasked him with keeping it safe, threatening to kill him if he lost it. He walked away as he nearly ran into Sabre and Orange Steve, who jumped on to the pathway below them, narrowly avoiding Nightmare Steve. As Nightmare Steve was gone, the Yellow Assistant was greeted by Sabre and Orange Steve and betrayed Nightmare Steve, allowing Orange Steve to give the Yellow Assistant another fake he created that doesn't explode before Nightmare Steve came back.

Upon returning, Nightmare Steve was able to build a machine in a short amount of time and brought with him the Darkness fragment from his facility along with the Yellow Assistant. Although the Yellow Assistant was hesitant and thought his plan was too risky, Nightmare Steve brushed it off, finally ready to prepare his master plan. Nightmare Steve turned to his assistant after the Darkness fragment stepped into one side of the machine and asked the Yellow Assistant if his loyalty was fully pledged to him. Upon frighteningly reaffirming that he was on his side, Nightmare Steve asked the Yellow Assistant to become the Darkness fragment's vessel. The Yellow Assistant was horrified and finally stood up to his king, refusing to follow his orders until Nightmare Steve threatened him. Upon stepping into the machine, Nightmare Steve activated it just as Sabre and Orange Steve stepped out from behind his throne.

Nightmare Steve turned around and greeted the duo, revealing not only he knew the Yellow Assistant had informed someone of his plans, but that he truly had no care for the kingdom and his people and was preparing to let the Darkness siege the kingdom and let it fall, having gathered as many Yellow Steves inside the kingdom to accomplish this. Sabre angrily demanded an answer as to why Nightmare Steve gave the Darkness a body, and he responded by stating that the Darkness needed a body and that he "only gave it a helping hand", stating that he created something monstrous, revealing that the Darkness had possessed the Yellow Assistant and become Dark Steve. Sabre furiously stated that he wouldn't let Nightmare Steve get away with his plan, causing the corrupted king to mock him, questioning the threat he posed before immobilizing him, once again questioning what threat he posed. Ignoring Sabre's concerns, Nightmare Steve stated that he and Dark Steve would continue with their plan as the latter stating that he'd see his boss "after the battle" before shapeshifting into a Yellow Steve. Nightmare Steve ignored all of Sabre's attempts to reason with him and let Dark Steve leave.

Upon returning back to Sabre, the latter tried his hardest to convince Nightmare Steve to reverse his actions, destroy Dark Steve and fix all of his mistakes. Upon asking why he'd want to do any of Sabre's options, Sabre told Nightmare Steve that he knew deep down he was a Yellow Steve, but also that he wasn't the true king as he'd met the real Yellow King earlier, surprising Nightmare Steve and once again letting him state that he wished that the kingdom would fall. As Sabre began yelling as Nightmare Steve to stop, he teleported away and let the siege happen, which it did. After Nightmare Steve left, Dark Steve lead the siege of the Darkness and attacked the Yellow Kingdom, convincing the other Yellow Steves to retreat inside the palace and destroying the majority of kingdom. Thus, the most powerful Yellow Kingdom had fallen.

Continuing his quest for power

After the siege, Nightmare Steve was no longer in a position of power, but still had authority over the Darkness, and with this leadership, he invaded the Orange Village, bringing Dark Steve and a fragment of the Darkness. Nightmare Steve rounded up several Orange Steves and took them as hostages, including the leader and Shy Orange Steve. Nightmare Steve had rounded up the Orange Steves to use them for leverage against Sabre and Orange Steve, hoping that they'd arrive so he could lure them and negotiate with them, otherwise the village would fall and Nightmare Steve would destroy the Orange Steves.

Sabre eventually came out of hiding as Orange Steve stayed hidden, confronting Nightmare Steve as he greeted him. Sabre asked Nightmare Steve what he wanted, to which Nightmare Steve responded that he wanted Sabre so he could capture him and try to figure out how to become immune to the Darkness. Threatening to destroy the Orange Steves, Sabre reluctantly agreed to come with him as long as Nightmare Steve agreed to leave the Orange Village alone and get Dark Steve and the Darkness fragment to agree. Nightmare Steve agreed, dismissing his minions and leaving him alone with Sabre. Nightmare Steve brought Sabre down the pathway and became ecstatic, seeing that he and Sabre were alone, he revealed that he didn't want the immunity and instead wanted to kill Sabre. Nightmare Steve bid Sabre farewell as he used his lightning powers to kill Sabre, sending him to the World Beyond.

While Sabre was in the World Beyond, Nightmare Steve dismissed the "deal" he made with Sabre and instead destroyed the Orange Village and kidnapped the Orange Steves, bringing them to his factory. However, Sabre was able to escape the World Beyond with the help of Blue Steve and returned to life in the overworld. Sabre found Orange Steve and prepared a machine for him, however, he realized that he was actually Dark Steve who had absorbed Happy Orange Steve and taken his form. However, Dark Steve was unable to fool Sabre and was trapped in a machine and forced to give up Nightmare Steve's location. However, Nightmare Steve had imprisoned Orange Steve so he could use him for an experiment that would produce his own version of the Hero that would work for him. However, Nightmare Steve's plan was foiled once Sabre rescued the Orange Steves and escaped the factory.

Upon learning that his prisoners had escaped, Nightmare Steve had had enough and tracked down Sabre and his friends, but before he could do anything, Sabre claimed that he had an army of ten thousand Yellow Steves behind a hill, distracting Nightmare Steve as the Yellow King's assistant distracted Nightmare Steve outside.

Downfall and first death

Due to Nightmare Steve's constant failure, the Darkness was beginning to effect his mentality and corrupting him further, exerting him of his strength to stop the Darkness from taking over. Nightmare Steve retreated to an island, but was found by the Darkness who began to surround him, causing Nightmare Steve to try and hold back the Darkness as he screamed the the Darkness to leave him alone, almost taunting him. Sabre, Orange and Light Steve remained hidden as they had arrived on the island minutes easier and were watching the conflict go down. As Nightmare Steve was holding off the Darkness the best he could, Light Steve emerged and used his lightning powers to destroy the Darkness surrounding Nightmare Steve, although the group kept their distance.

Utterly baffled as to why they were with him, Nightmare Steve asked what they were doing and claimed that his situation was none of their concern. Sabre watched Nightmare Steve briefly take out the crystal and asked him to hand it over, but just like all the previous attempts, Nightmare Steve refused to give it up. Sabre told Nightmare Steve that he had warned him when they first met that the Darkness would eventually take over his mind and body if he wasn't careful and how that had now come full circle as Nightmare Steve was now fighting off the Darkness, heavily embarrassing him. Sabre offered to help Nightmare Steve revert back to a normal Yellow Steve by giving him the Yellow Crystal and eliminating the Darkness on him, but Nightmare Steve refused, seemingly confident that he wouldn't lose to the Darkness.

Despite Sabre stating that he was trying to stop the Darkness and that he could help Nightmare Steve, Nightmare Steve ultimately thought that there was no point in trying to stop the Darkness, having lost all hope in the Darkness being eliminated. Nightmare Steve claimed that once the seal containing the Darkness was breached the end of the world was bound to happen and that there was no way to re-contain the Darkness, which is why he worked with the Darkness in the first place, not even having faith in the Hero as it was a legacy identity that didn't last and didn't properly seal it away the last time, claiming that the Darkness grew stronger and learned more with every time it was released. Although Sabre claimed that the Steves would also grow and change, Nightmare Steve still saw it as pointless and that no other outcome was possible, seeing his and the Steves' fates as inevitable.

Although Sabre kept trying to convince Nightmare Steve that the Steves could prevail if they tried hard enough, Nightmare Steve saw no use, as he thought that the Darkness would prevail no matter what and would always come back. Seeing as there was no point in trying to reason with him as he was already half-Darkness, Sabre asked Light Steve to try and purge the Darkness from Nightmare Steve, but not kill him. However, this attempted only ended up injuring Light Steve due to the Darkness' strength, prompting Nightmare Steve to state that Light Steve was reaching his limits. Although Sabre once again offered to help, Nightmare stated that helping him wouldn't help stop the Darkness, and that it would always come out on top. Nightmare Steve refused to give the Yellow Crystal as it would make the Darkness fully take over him, however, Orange Steve snatched it from him as Nightmare Steve became weaker. Nightmare Steve stated that the ending was bound to happen, and that Sabre would have to try a lot harder if he wanted to stop the Darkness, claiming that it was just the beginning. Just as he finished speaking, Light Steve stepped in and used his lightning powers to destroy Nightmare Steve before the Darkness could fully take over him, leaving a large crater behind.

Resurrection

Upon dying, Nightmare Steve arrived at the Middle World and met Indigo Steve, however, Nightmare Steve refused to pass on and managed to escape by being pulled out of the Middle World by Void Steve. Being brought to the Void, the Darkness on Nightmare Steve's body began to spread further, leading to him having to be placed in stasis to heal. Although his condition was critical, Void Steve forced Nightmare Steve into becoming his henchman and conducting his knew plan to unleash the Darkness from the Void to the overworld. During his plan, Nightmare Steve was assisted by Chaos Steve who sent Rainbow Steve to the Void after destroying the Rainbow Hub.

When Sabre, Rainbow and Light Steve arrived at the Void they were immediately surrounded by a pack of Darkness and encased in a bedrock cart to be escorted to Nightmare Steve's palace where they found the former monarch in his healing stasis. Nightmare Steve greeted the trio, revealing himself to still be alive, albeit incredibly corrupted. Sabre was utterly baffled, seeing that Nightmare Steve was still alive despite witnessing his destruction at Light Steve's hands. Nightmare Steve went on to claim that he was now embracing the Darkness, encouraging the group to do the same, freaking out Sabre. Nightmare Steve continued, revealing that he was ready to pass on until a voice whispered to him, allowing him another way out by placing him in the void. Sabre interrupted as he stated that the Yellow King's throne had since been restored and that they'd been thriving since Nightmare Steve's demise.

Nightmare Steve then stated his plan, allowing the group to listen to it. Nightmare Steve revealed that he was going to take over the overworld by gathering enough Darkness in the overworld and making them build a portal to the Void, connecting the overworld to the Void and allowing the Nightmare Steve and the rest of the Darkness to cross over. Much like in his last moments before his first death, Nightmare Steve claimed that Sabre's achievements, such as restoring peace and creating Rainbow Steve, were all for nothing, as the Darkness would inevitably succeed. Rainbow Steve approached and childishly insulted the former king, prompting Nightmare Steve to mock him, claiming that he wasn't afraid of him, and that everything they've worked for would be for nothing. As Rainbow Steve tried to escape, Nightmare Steve decided it would be best to simply kill the trio where they stood due to them knowing his plan. Before anything could happen, the attempted murder was interrupted by a then-unknown Galaxy Steve, surprising Nightmare Steve. In anger, Nightmare Steve commanded the Darkness to attack the group, but Galaxy Steve managed to teleport them all out of the Void and back to the Middle World before the Darkness could kill them, temporarily severing the connecting from the Void to the Middle World.

Second and final death

Despite Sabre knowing Nightmare Steve's plan, his attempts to stop them were in vain due to Reverse Steve sacrificing himself and giving his life-force to power the portal connecting the Void to the overworld, allowing the Darkness to cross over. Although the Darkness had crossed over, Sabre employed Galaxy Steve to assist them due to his immense amount of power. Sabre, Rainbow and Galaxy Steve entered the Void and approached Nightmare Steve at his palace, surprising Nightmare Steve as he saw Galaxy Steve, recognizing him as the one who had saved Sabre and his friends. Sabre confronted Nightmare Steve, claiming that it was over for him as they had Galaxy Steve on their side and there was no Darkness around to protect Nightmare Steve as they had all migrated to the overworld. Nightmare Steve brushed off Sabre's comments, revealing that his healing process was completed as the glass encasing him vanished, allowing the Nightmare King to walk again, destroying the stairs he walked down as he approached Sabre, proclaiming that he was ready to fight him.

Instantly realizing that he might lose the fight and being intimidated by the power he was facing, Sabre cowardly attempted to turn back and escape, however, Nightmare Steve claimed that he wouldn't let them leave, insinuating that they'd "drop like gravel" as he rushed at Galaxy Steve and began engaging in a lightning-based fight. As Nightmare Steve injured Rainbow Steve with his lightning, Galaxy Steve stepped in and challenged him as Nightmare Steve began to combat him. Now using his powers to flight, Nightmare Steve constantly mocked Galaxy Steve, calling him a "toy" and claiming that he'd rejoice in his defeat, believing himself to be the superior fighter. Although Rainbow Steve assisted Galaxy Steve, Galaxy Steve seemed to be nowhere near close to killing Nightmare Steve. Sabre then encouraged Galaxy Steve to win, baffling him as he realized he was meant to win and calmly decided to unleash his full power.

Shocked that his opponent had not even been using his full power, Galaxy Steve broke the floor beneath the Nightmare King and dunked him in the lava beneath the pathway. Climbing out, Nightmare Steve proved that he clearly couldn't stand up to Galaxy Steve's raw power as his lightning grew weaker. Cowering in fear and severely weakened, Nightmare Steve tried to fight back but proved no use as Galaxy Steve unleashed another bolt of lightning. Although he was holding on by a thread, Nightmare Steve took his last moments to gloat, claiming that his job was completed and sarcastically wishing the group good luck as Galaxy Steve used his lightning to obliterate him, upsetting Sabre as Galaxy Steve had allowed him to fit in his monologue and ending the Nightmare King's reign of terror, this time for good.

Legacy

Although he was now dead and no longer had a grasp on the Darkness, Nightmare Steve's death served as the gate to unleashing Void Steve, his boss, into the world as the portal was built. With Nightmare and Reverse Steve's help, Void Steve was able to exit the Void and begin his genocide of the Steves.

Not only was Nightmare Steve the gateway to many innocent lives being destroyed, but he also left deep emotional trauma for a lot of Yellow Steves, especially his former assistant, whom he had forced into becoming a vessel for Dark Steve, not letting him fully get over the experience.

During the rebellion against the Rainbow Kingdom lead by Sol and his army, the Corrected Sun, due to their prejudice against Blue and Indigo Steves as Void, Corruption and Soul Steve were Blue and Indigo Steves, Sabre brought up the fact that there was a double standard due to Nightmare Steve being a Yellow Steve, although this information was completely ignored by the Corrected Sun and their leader.

~ Nightmare Steve learns that Sabre is collecting the crystals.
I'll spare you for now, you seem like you could be valuable, just never show your face here or around my people again.
~ Nightmare Steve
Assistant, escort them out!
~ Nightmare Steve demands his assistant to get rid of Sabre and Orange Steve.
You said you had an immunity to the Darkness?
~ Nightmare Steve questions Sabre.
Well then, I've come to make an offer.
~ Nightmare Steve comes with an offer.
Well, you have an immunity. I want the immunity, so we could work together.
~ Nightmare Steve offers to work together with Sabre.
My reasons are none of your concern.
~ Nightmare Steve doesn't reveal why he wants immunity.
I won't be taking no for an answer.
~ Nightmare Steve
You're sure you don't want to work together? I'm more powerful than both of you combined.
~ Nightmare Steve
Again, I will not be taking no for an answer.
~ Nightmare Steve
Oh yeah? Well, now your frozen too.
~ Nightmare Steve freezes Orange Steve when he retaliates against him.
I was hoping you'd be smart enough to work with me, but you have to go on being obnoxious. I gave you the chance to help willingly, so now you don't have a choice.
~ Nightmare Steve
Will you work with me now?
~ Nightmare Steve after teleporting Orange Steve to his facility.
Welcome to my facility.
~ Nightmare Steve
I will be doing no such thing.
~ Nightmare Steve in response to Sabre demanding to be let out.
How about you just hang tight while I figure out your immunity thing.
~ Nightmare Steve plans to experiment on Sabre.
It's a good thing we caught you, I can't believe you escaped my facility.
~ Nightmare Steve to the Yellow Steve who escaped his facility.
Nightmare Steve: Someone who betrays once will betray again. You wouldn't do something like that though, would you..?
Assistant: N-no! I'd n-never..
Nightmare Steve: Good, I need someone trustworthy on my side. Especially since I got the second crystal. Maybe I should use it.
Assistant: Ummmm.. don't you need to actually prepare before you use it?
Nightmare Steve: I guess so.. I'll go prepare, if anything happens to the crystal, you're doomed.
Assistant: Y-Yes sir.. I u-understand! I'll keep it s-safe!
~ Nightmare Steve to his assistant after killing the Yellow Steve.
Assistant! I've come back, you better have the crystal.
~ Nightmare Steve
Nightmare Steve: Finally! The time has come!
Assistant: S-Sir! D-don't you think t-this is too dangerous?
Nightmare Steve: Nonsense! I have prepared for so long! Now the plan can go on! Darkness! Take your place! Don't you worry, Darkness, now that I have condensed you enough, you will have your own vessel.
Assistant: S-Sir, w-what.. who would y-your vessel b-be?
Nightmare Steve: Well, assistant, I have someone in mind.
Assistant: O-oh, d-do I need to g-get them..?
Nightmare Steve: Dear assistant... wouldn't you do anything for me? Your king?
Assistant: Y-yes, S-Sir, anything...
Nightmare Steve: Then you would be happy to become one with the Darkness, right?
Assistant: You.. you can't be serious.
Nightmare Steve: It would mean a lot to me...
Assistant: I.. I.. I.. I don't want to!
Nightmare Steve: Get in the machine, assistant.
Assistant: P-please, n-no!
Nightmare Steve: NOW! GO! Ah, yes. Finally!
~ Nightmare Steve forces his assistant into his machine, allowing the Darkness to possess him.
Hello Sabre, Orange Steve, I was expecting you. I knew the assistant told SOMEONE about my plans. Glad you could make it.
~ Nightmare Steve greets Sabre and Orange Steve after they witness the assistant's apparent demise.
Well, you see, the Darkness needs its own body. The Darkness craves to become a Steve. I only gave it a helping hand. I created the perfect subject!
~ Nightmare Steve explains why he went along with his experiment and reveals Dark Steve.
You're not going to let me get away with this? Like you can do anything. What threat do you pose?
~ Nightmare Steve
I'll ask again, what can you do?
~ Nightmare Steve after freezing Sabre and Orange Steve again.
Nightmare Steve: Shall we move on with the plan?
Dark Steve: Yes. Of course. I will see you after the battle.
Nightmare Steve: I will see you then.
~ Nightmare Steve plans with Dark Steve.
And why would I do that?
~ Nightmare Steve questions why he should bring back his assistant.
Oh? So that coward has come into the light? Thank you for telling me. And this kingdom will fall to the Darkness if I wish, which I do. Try and do what you wish, it will only add to the chaos.
~ Nightmare Steve in response to Sabre informing him about the Yellow King, and telling him how the kingdom will fall to the Darkness.
Found you.
~ Nightmare Steve appearing behind Sabre.
Once the seal was broken the end was bound to happen, there's no stopping it. That's the reason I worked with the Darkness in the first place.
~ Nightmare Steve on the Darkness.

Season 2

Welcome, Sabre, Light Steve and Rainbow Steve. Welcome to the Void.
~ Nightmare Steve reveals himself to be alive.
I'm embracing the Darkness now. You three should just embrace the Darkness completely, it would be so much easier for all of the Steves.
~ Nightmare Steve advising the trio to embrace the Darkness.
I was so right to pass onto the world beyond, since a voice whispered to me. It gave me another way out.
~ Nightmare Steve
I have a plan. Would you like to know it?
~ Nightmare Steve offering to explain his plan.
I'm going to take over the regular world, and with enough Darkness gathered in the overworld.. They will build a portal to let the Void directly connect with the regular world and everything that you've worked for will be for nothing.
~ Nightmare Steve explaining his new objective.
You creating Rainbow Steve and getting this far, it'll all be for nothing, because the Darkness will win in the end.
~ Nightmare Steve putting his faith in the Darkness.
Your optimism is for nothing anyways.
~ Nightmare Steve mocking Sabre.
Because I've told you my plan. I can't let you go now. It's time to destroy you.
~ Nightmare Steve preparing to kill Sabre and his friends once and for all.
What!? Who are you!? What's going on!? Is this your doing!?
~ Nightmare Steve is intercepted by a mysterious figure.
Don't let them get away! Darkness! Get them!
~ Nightmare Steve ordering the Darkness to kill Sabre.
Welcome back to the Void, Sabre, Rainbow Steve, and... who are you?
~ Nightmare Steve welcoming the trio, while also being confused by the arrival of Galaxy Steve.
I agree, I need an upgrade.
~ Nightmare Steve admitting that he should upgrade his palace.
Yeah, and I don't need them. My healing process is near complete; you're too late. I can easily take on all three of you right now, simultaneously even. Oh, that'd be good fun wouldn't it?
~ Nightmare Steve reveals that he's in perfect condition to fight.
I'm ready.
~ Nightmare Steve confronts Sabre face-to-face after he's finished healing.
No. No, no. I shall make sure none of you leave... this time. You fools will drop like gravel. COME AT ME!
~ Nightmare Steve before attacking Sabre's group.
HAHAHA! Now for you.
~ Nightmare Steve focuses his attention to Galaxy Steve.
HA! OH, THIS IS TOO GOOD! LIKE A TOY YOU ARE. I'LL REJOICE ONCE YOU'RE DEFEATED.
~ Nightmare Steve taunts Galaxy Steve during their fight.
HAHAHAA! TOO GOOD. TOO GOOD.
~ Nightmare Steve
It's been a while since I've had a proper fight!
~ Nightmare Steve
You thought you could even get on my level "Galaxy Steve"!? YOU'RE NOT EVEN FLYING! YOU WEAK CREATURE!
~ Nightmare Steve mocks Galaxy Steve for seemingly appearing to not be as powerful as him.
WHAT!? OW! WHAT THE -- HOW IS THIS... get back!... no! YOU WILL NOT. GET...
~ Nightmare Steve upon hearing that Galaxy Steve was idiotically not trying to win the fight.
It's not over- yet... You will see-- AHH!
~ Nightmare Steve becomes severely weakened after his fight.
You're too late...! My job has already been completed! Good luck!
~ Nightmare Steve's last words before facing his second and final death at the hands of Galaxy Steve.

Trivia

  • Unlike his regular counterpart, who is also dubbed the "Nightmare King", this incarnation of Nightmare Steve shows much more of leadership abilities and how he rules as a tyrant.
    • Also unlike his counterpart, the black parts of his body are not shadow stone, but instead are parts of the Darkness which he has absorbed.
  • Before being revealed to be alive in Season 2, it was theorized that Nightmare Steve would return from the dead or be revealed to have survived by teleporting elsewhere, due to the fact that he had previously served as one of the most popular and recurring characters across the original series.
  • Nightmare Steve seems to think lowly of his palace, claiming that he "need[s] an upgrade" after Galaxy Steve insults it.
  • It's unclear if Nightmare Steve was aware of the Demon Steves after joining Void Steve, since that would've further motivated him into protecting his people from them instead of the Darkness.
    • This revelation to him, if true, would've also revealed to him that he shouldn't have been protecting his people from the Darkness, but rather the greater threat that the Darkness was created to hold back.
