Niles, better known in his fused form as Zero, is the overarching antagonist of the 2011 Australian adult-animated comedy web-series SMG4, the unseen overarching antagonist of its spin-off Sunset Paradise and the posthumous overarching antagonist of it's spin-offs SMG4 & SMG3 and SMG4 Crew.
He is an artificial meme guardian created by the God Box as a negative counterpart to SMG0, in order to aid him and his avatar Fred in maintaining their universe. However, after becoming obsessed with achieving perfection and fixing himself, he acquired great power from the God Box and the goal to to create the "perfect universe", leading to him accidentally killing Fred and then assimilating SMG0 after destroying their universe to become the interdimensional virus: Zero.
Now dead-set on creating the "perfect" universe for himself and SMG0 to inhabit, Niles, as Zero, traversed the multiverse and wiped out numerous universes, corrupting and destroying them as he went. After destroying the ToyToy Kingdom, he was sealed away by SMG1 and 2 until he managed to partially escape to the Mushroom Kingdom and inhabited an abandoned cathedral within the Dark Web, beginning to kidnap many recolored Marios, stripping them of their souls and reducing them to faceless husks in his pursuit of Mario in order to make him his new avatar for his plan to construct the "perfect" universe. He is also responsible for the indirect death of the SMG4 crew’s friend and member Axol after possessing him and having Melony kill him to stop his terror for now. He is the second arch-nemesis of the SMG4 Gang including being the archenemy of Melony, SMG1, and SMG2.
He was voiced by Michael Kovach, who also voices Bendy in Fazbear and Friends, N in Murder Drones, and The Scientist and The Prototype in Poppy Playtime. As Zero, he mainly uses sound clips from the Predator with an unknown full voice actor. While possessing Axol, he is voiced by Kevin Lerdwichagul. During the WOTFI 2021 Rap Battle, he is voiced by Matthew Guerra. When possessing Melony, he is voiced by Wolfychu.

He is the unseen overarching antagonist of the Classic Era, the main antagonist of the Modern Era and one of the two posthumous overarching antagonists (alongside Mr. Puzzle's Dad) of Showground Era.
Before the Sagas, he is the unseen overarching antagonist of first nine seasons, the main antagonist of Cosmology Lore Saga, and one of the two posthumous overarching antagonists (alongside Mr. Puzzle's Dad) of PUZZLEVISION Saga.
In the Cosmology Lore, he serves as the unseen overarching antagonist of Season 10 and The YouTube Arc, the main antagonist of Seasons 11 and 12, SMG4 Movie: 10 Year Anniversary Special, the Genesis Arc, the Revelations Arc and SMG4 Movie: REVELATIONS, and the posthumous overarching antagonist of The Lawsuit Arc.
In the PUZZLEVISION Saga, he is one of the two posthumous overarching antagonists (alongside Mr. Puzzles' Dad) of Seasons 13 and 14, and the posthumous overarching antagonist in the ongoing Season 15 and onwards.
Appearance[]
He has grey skin with black shoes and red laces. He wears black pants and a purple-grey hoodie with grey stripes. He has a red hat with white hair that fades to lilac at the bottom, covering part of his face. He also appears to have bandages on his arms.
In SMG4: Absolute Betrayal, his true form is a cyclops, seeing that he has no left eye, thus explaining why it has always been covered up by his fringe. His true eye is also the same as his fused form, only that the pupil is much thinner.
In SMG4 Movie: REVELATIONS, his appearance remains the same, albeit with his eye being positioned back to the right, with his fringe covering his face's left side. In some shots, his eye turns into his Zer0 eye.
As Zero, he has a purplish, humanoid body with numerous spines, a mouth with rows of fanged teeth, circular, intercepting horns on top of his head, and a monocular facial appearance, with a giant eye with a crimson sclera, and a 0-shaped pupil. In addition, he has an open thoracic cage where the lower ribs can be seen as if his lower torso has disintegrated, completely lacks legs, and his skin is bluish-purplish with missing textures like SMG1 & SMG2. This appearance was shown in both SMG4: The Day HE Arrived and SMG4: War Of The Fat Italians 2021. In SMG4 Movie: REVELATIONS, it is shown that he has nails on his fingers.
As Ax0l, he corrupts Axol's physical form over time. Initially, he has purple scars on his face's right side, a gaping smile with sharp teeth, and horns combined into a ring. Later, his left eye glows blue while his right eye is red with a "0" on it. He has a fleshy "collar" with spikes around it, his abdomen is replaced with a glitched ribcage, and his left arm now contains the Inkweaver's core. In his final corruption, he is much larger, lacks his legs and floats instead, and his ring now has multiple tendrils connected to a 0 symbol.
Personality[]
Despite being a fusion of Niles and SMG0, the former is the one in control and Zero's consciousness, while SMG0 is a prisoner within their mindscape, meaning that Zero's personality is mostly Niles, who is single-minded in his goal of a perfect universe and living happily ever after. The small part of Zero that is SMG0 can manifest for a few moments before Niles takes over again, like when SMG0 pleas "HELP..." after Niles killed Spudnick and when he stopped their fusion from dragging Melony and the others down with them when the God Box is destroyed.
With Niles being the one in control, Zero is a cruel yet patient being who seeks to make his own universe with his own avatar. Despite his seemingly peaceful goal, Zero goes to extreme lengths to obtain it and causes mass destruction and death in his wake. He has shown no remorse for the lives he takes and the pain he causes and holds little regard for anyone's happiness but his own - showing extreme selfishness and self-righteousness.
Zero is very manipulative yet intelligent, able to turn almost any situation into a plan to further his goals. Such as, when he got Axol instead of Mario, he decided to use the opportunity to get close to Mario without suspicion and wait until everyone's guard was down before executing his plan of dragging Mario, SMG4 and SMG3 into the Backrooms through the toilets and then trick them with a facade of Axol to get them into SMG3's Guardian Pod.
He also displays multiple signs of sadism due to Niles' hate for the other SMGs, seeing them as wannabes since he believes only himself and SMG0 are the true meme guardians. These are displayed with his attempts on SMG1 and SMG2's lives for the trouble they have caused him and laughing when he attempted to crush them to death or when he claimed "perfect" in response to SMG4 saying that Axol (Zero) was hurting him. Despite his intellect, his arrogance proved his ultimate downfall, as the other SMGs are true meme guardians, showing ultimate meme power when they work together, but no matter how many times they proved Niles wrong, he continues to foolishly persist.
When angered, Zero can prove extremely destructive as he enchained all of the SMGs and SMG4's Gang when trying to split him from Axol and turned the sky red from his rage. Another example is him summoning legions of corrupted memes and taking to killing SMG3 and SMG4 himself after they freed Mario from his grasp. His anger is more accurately defined when Niles manages to rejoin with SMG0 inside the God Box, claiming Melony's challenge to him "pathetic" and brutally assaulting her. He also goes to the extreme when forced to his breaking point in anger, such as throwing a broken universe piece at SMG4's spaceship in rage when they were escaping from his grasp, despite the fact that it could have killed Mario.
When he realized that Melony, Mario, SMG3 and SMG4 would escape from the God Box, the true extent of Niles/Zero's psychopathy is revealed as he does everything in his power to drag them down with him if it meant he couldn't have his perfect universe. It was only when SMG0 directly intervened that Niles understood the futility of the situation and began to cry in despair, unable to believe it was the end and claiming that he and SMG0 were supposed to be together in their new universe, but SMG0 assured him that just being together was enough and encouraged him to go reunite with Fred again in the next life, thus bringing peace to Niles and Zero once and for all.

Trivia[]
- For the first couple of episodes in the Genesis Arc, Niles' Eldritch SMG0 form was referred to as just Zero, with his apparent true name being hinted at until it was practically confirmed in SMG4: The Other Universe due to multiple uses of his real name. These hints at his true name were:
- SMG1 and SMG2 calling SMG4 and SMG3 "Four" and "Three", while referring to "SMG0" as "Zero".
- Like SMG1, SMG2, SMG3, and SMG4, Eldritch SMG0 also has a Guardian Pod.
- In the second Meggy stream, after she watched the movie, Meggy believed that Zero's real name is actually SMG0 and that he got corrupted by some kind of power.
- In SMG4: SMG4 Goes Insane, an insane SMG4 was about to tell Mario his theory that Zero might actually be SMG0, but was knocked out before he could finish his sentence.
- In SMG4: The Other Universe, Mario directly referred to Zero as SMG0.
- Unlike most SMG4 villains, Niles is one of the very few without comedic moments and is taken almost completely seriously. However, he did have one comedic scene where he sung You Spin Me Around while torturing Mario, SMG4, and, SMG3, but it does not detract his actions solely.
- Niles shares similarities with XANA from Code Lyoko, Agent Smith from The Matrix trilogy and Invictus from Final Space.
- All four are viruses who aim to exterminate all life (with the exception of Invictus, who is not an AI but a god-like being: However, both it and Zero can travel universes while seeking to destroy them).
- All four are capable of possessing other living creatures.
- All four don’t seem to possess any redeeming qualities, and if they did, they essentially completely lost them in the end.
- All four seek to destroy a certain individual in order to achieve their goals (Mario and Spudnick for Zero, Aelita for XANA, Neo for Smith and Gary Goodspeed for Invictus.)
- He also shares similarities with the Devourer from the Epic Battle Fantasy series:
- They're both delusional, omnicidal one-eyed eldritch abominations.
- Both are considered the darkest villains in their respective series (both of which are comedic) and serve as the overarching antagonists of them.
- Both threatened to come to the real world in one way or another.
- His Eldritch SMG0 form could be comparable to Majin Buu from the Dragon Ball series.
- Eldritch SMG0 and Majin Buu have both good (SMG0/Good Buu) and evil (Niles/Kid Buu) sides.
- The evil halves forcefully combined with their good half into a powerful, monstrous form but with the evil half in total control.
- They both split apart into the good and evil halves after being defeated.
- Interestingly, Zero has an eye drone. This could be a possible reference to a villain in the *Kirby video game series, who is also named Zero, who takes the form of an eye ball. However, it is not confirmed if this is meant to be a reference or not.
- Zero’s eye drone bears a striking resemblance to the Eye of Cthulhu from Terraria.
- Niles is easily the most heinous and one of the most powerful villains in SMG4 had to face due to destroying countless universes including trying to destroy SMG4's universe and killing a major character. However, what keeps him from being irredeemable is his sympathetic death and care for his friend SMG0 and Fred (as he was happy to see the latter in the afterlife).
- It's debatable if the Zero seen in the psychological apparition is the real deal as he was still possessing Axol at the time, there's multiple eye forms at the same time and the fact that the psychological apparition is much more comedic than the normal Zero.
- Zero's design seems to have changed between SMG4: The Day HE Arrived and SMG4: War Of The Fat Italians 2021, particularly with his main body's eye. It's "0" pupil was thicker and faded, the symbol's slash didn't poke out of the sides, and it had a greyish-blue center behind it.
- He is the mascot of the Plagiarism template.
- Niles displays six of the seven deadly sins.
- Wrath: Has wiped out and corrupted countless universes in the past, wielding an incalculable kill count.
- Pride: Ultimately the main sin he represents. Niles is a perfectionist who only cares about perfecting his world, without a care in the multiverse if his goals harm others.
- Greed: Niles is power hungry as he relies on individuals as pawns notably The Box Club Leader, Axol, Melony and SMG0 for his plans to reach the God Box.
- Envy: He has shown distaste towards SMG4, and SMG3 as he claims himself and SMG0 to be the "Real Meme Guardians" near the very end.
- Sloth: As Niles, he sleeps through the Omnia Academy student body president election.
- Gluttony: His main method of killing seems to be sapping out people’s life force.
