Eric, also known by his title as Prince Eric, is a character from the "Disney Princesses but they're Villains" series of songs by musical artist Lydia the Bard. He is a villainous adaptation of the character from the 1989 animated Disney film The Little Mermaid, serving as the main antagonist of Ariel's 2025 song and animatic.
Biography[]
This version of the story begins similarly to how it did in the Disney version: Eric was born the prince of a seaside kingdom. He was well-like by his people, and enjoyed sailing and adventuring as a pastime.
One night, a storm strikes the ship Eric is sailing, sinking it. As he falls unconscious, he is unknowingly saved by a mermaid named Ariel. Despite Ariel swimming away when Eric wakes up, the two both fall in love with each other, Eric determined to find the girl who saved his life. Ariel, meanwhile, makes a deal with the sea with Ursula to become human for three days at the cost of her voice.
Ariel meets Eric and the two hit it off, much to the spying Ursula's shock and frustration. She decides to intervene by using her magic to transform herself into a beautiful human woman named Vanessa, using Ariel's voice and a hypnotic spell to convince Eric that she was the one who saved him. Eric, hypnotized, prepares to wed Vanessa. Ariel is heartbroken, unaware of Vanessa's true identity or Eric's bewitched state. Ariel, with help of her friends, manages to snap Eric out of his trance, though her true nature as a mermaid is revealed to him. Ursula manages to steal Triton's trident and use it to turn into a giant monster, attempting to kill Ariel, but Eric saves her by steering a ship into Ursula, impaling and killing her. As a sign of peace, Triton turns Ariel human and allows her to marry Eric, living with him in his kingdom.
However, things began to soon change. When Ariel would casually sing as she went about her duties in the castle, Eric would seemingly become entranced and possessively obsessed with her. Fearing the same kind of hypnosis that had occurred when Eric was controlled by Ursula, Eric and his servant Grimsby researched the phenomenon, and discovered that Ariel had become a siren, possibly a result of Ursula's dark magic when she was using Ariel's voice. Ariel's singing and even speaking became enthralling to any human that could hear it, and Eric was more and more altered, obsessed with "owning" Ariel. Ariel tried to appeal to him, but his fear over her abilities was so great that he locked her in the castle dungeon, gagging her and posting guards with cotton in their ears. Additionally, he also ordered merfolk to be killed on sight.
One night when a guard adjusted the cotton in his ear, Ariel took the opportunity to hypnotize him and allow herself to escape. She returned to the ocean, now bitter and wrathful towards not only Eric but humanity in general, she decided to fully embrace the siren role. She found and teamed up with other sirens and began a killing spree across the seas, singing to lull in sailors with hypnosis and illusions before boarding their ships and dragging them all to watery graves. Eric, seeking to reclaim Ariel, sets off to find her.
Eventually, Ariel and her sirens come across Prince Eric's ship looking for her. She and her sirens attack the ship, trying to coax the sailors to their doom. Ariel targets Eric specifically, boarding the ship and trying to entice him. He fights back with a fishing spear, managing to cut Ariel's arm, but this only angers her. As the other sirens drag Eric's crew to their deaths, Ariel angrily overpowers Eric and holds him over the side of the boat. With a forlorn expression, she drops him into the water below before joining him, dragging him into the deep.
Personality[]
This version of Eric is abusive and possessive of Ariel, treating her poorly as punishment for a power she cannot control. However, it is strongly suggested that Eric's change from friendly and romantic to possessive and paranoid is in part due to Ariel's voice tempting and controlling him like a drug or addiction, causing him to become so enthralled by Ariel and her voice that he begins obsessing over her like property instead of his wife. it is also implied that he is so traumatized by his time being controlled by Ursula that he fears Ariel and sirens' powers will do the same to him and others, and therefore takes extreme and abusive measures to prevent harm, including his xenophobic decree to kill merfolk on sight just because they could be sirens.
