“ | Determined. You guys would do anything for your kinds, wouldn't you? I'll do anything for mine... Even if it means extreme measures. | „ |
~ Moonquill to the Black Nebula. |
“ | I told the black nebula that I'll do anything for my kind. That's exactly what I'm doing right now. And by my "kind", I didn't only mean the glitch... I consider all of us one kind, as I think we need to all unite. Back then, it was going along with your plan, but now, it's because we're facing the same threat, you. Goodbye for now. | „ |
~ Moonquill confronting Stormlance, realising the error of her ways. |
Princess (later Queen) Moonquill is the former secondary antagonist of Crystallic’s Starbound Trilogy. She serves as a minor character in Starbound: The Black Nebula, a major antagonist of Starbound: Rise of the Stargazers, and one of the three deuteragonists of Starbound: The Glitch Empire. She was the glitch princess of the Glitch Empire, who tried her best to keep order among the universe. Despite acting tyrannical and trying to capture people seen as a “threat to the peace”, she does truly care for her kind, and states she will do anything for them. At the end of the second story, she successfully captured the Black Nebula. However, she redeemed herself in the third story, and joined the protectorate. After defeating her father, she became the new Queen, trying to undo what her father had done.

Personality[]
Moonquill has quite a serious personality. She is completely dedicated to keeping order in not just her star system, but across the universe. She was fine with using extreme measures for it, such as arresting or even killing rebels, and has helped her father keep his order. Despite her seriousness, her extremism was well intentioned, as she only wants to protect her kind, and to protect order in the universe as well. She also has standards, as she was angry with Xochtal and Ezalco for their actions, and was upset at Ezalco invading her villages due to him killing her citizens.
She is quite a cunning individual, having stopped many rebels who wish to spread the truth about the glitch. She is excellent at tricking others, as she managed to fake her death during the climax, and during that, she infiltrated the Black Nebula ship. She has confidence, despite her seriousness, and sometimes uses charisma to manipulate others. Apparently, she used to be quite shy, and was shown to be nervous in the Black Nebula post credits scene, but has since become more confident.
However, at the end of Rise of the Stargazers, an attack from Nightheart seemed to have done a number on her personality, as she became much more energetic and excited. The reason for this is due to a chip that was influencing her to be more calm and loyal came off, causing a burst of energy and making her more rebellious. This ended up leading to her slowly redeeming herself. After she redeemed herself, she dropped her extremism and began acting much more friendly and open towards others, while still keeping an elegant composure as the new queen, as she cooled down from the side effects of losing her chip overtime.
Villainous Acts[]
- She helps her father control people they have taken over, who are mainly the glitch.
- She has stopped several rebellions against her fathers tyranny.
- She captured Azima’s crew and locked them up.
- She followed the Black Nebula across the universe to try and capture them.
- It is implied that she has had several people who attempted to spread self awareness executed.
- She tried to obtain the Ancient Kluex Staff for her father.
- When the Black Nebula’s ship crashed, she had a hunch that they survived, and went down to the planet to spy on them. Then, she placed trackers in mechanical parts to repair the ship, and arrested the mechanic who repaired their ship.
- During the climax, she faked her death at the hands of Nightheart, and then snuck onto the Black Nebula’s ship. Then, at the end of the story, she gased/knocked everyone unconscious and had the ship taken back to her father, with the crew onboard and detained.
- She helped invade Solunar Nexus, albeit she secretly didn’t want to and only did it because she was forced to.

“ | (Informative. Yes, that's basically it. I've seen the news and, it's not pretty at all what's going on... They say that millions of avians have been killed. I'm worried he may target one of our towns, as we have avians there.) King: Worried. Indeed, but don't worry, I've got preparations to defend ourselves, and lockdown. I programmed emergency lockdown inside of them if needed! So, what are you planning? I trust you know what your doing.) Confused. For once, I don't know... Should I capture the black nebula while there weak, then go after the stargazers? Or should I leave them for now? I know my mission is to capture them, but... (King: Informative. Perhaps you can do both? Every member of that crew is dangerous to our society, but their also dangerous to the stargazers... You could use them to help overwhelm the stargazers, and when the time is right?) (Moonquill + King: Snatch that staff!) Relieved. I can't believe I didn't come up with that! There's luckily a ship mechanic in the village, so I'm going to use that to my advantage... | „ |
~ Moonquill and her father discussing on what to do. |
“ | Informative. Oh, I do too. They'll know where they are, so I'll follow. I intend to take both the stargazers and the black nebula down. The black nebula will remain alive, but I will have them captured... | „ |
~ Moonquill, intending to stop both the Stargazers and the Black Nebula. |
“ | Respectful. If you were a peasant, I wouldn't be fighting... | „ |
~ Moonquill to Nightheart, showing she has some respect for the Black Nebula. |

~ Ezalco, Nightheart and Moonquill. |
“ | Stern. I will not. Control and order is for the greater good. You know what happens if chaos ensues? Destruction, LOTS OF IT! Serial killers, rapists, terrorists, they happen due to people thinking they can do whatever they want. You have no idea what my father is thinking, so I'll tell you, he's thinking of the well being of everyone else! | „ |
~ Moonquill on why she thinks absolute control is the best for everyone. |

~ Moonquill faking her death at the hands of Nightheart. |
“ | Excited. Now, let's go back to dad and bring in these crew members! We got them, and it only took faking my death, some spies and getting under the floor! Now, since my arm is fucked, can someone pilot the ship for me? | „ |
~ Moonquill after she arrested the Black Nebula, being revealed to be alive. |
The Glitch Empire[]
“ | Disgusted. With an attitude like yours, he might change his mind... It is important to have a position of power, yes, but we don't need prison camps or any of that! It's wrong! We don't torture our citizens! We only punish people if they've done something wrong! | „ |
~ Moonquill to Kleriya. |
“ | Shocked. What the hell is wrong with you... We're meant to make a peaceful society, not one ruled by fear! You think your in the right, but your actions are wrong! | „ |
~ Moonquill, shocked at Kleriya’s behaviour. |
“ | Smug. Yes, I saw your browsing history! Dreadful. Never make me look at something so unsightly again... | „ |
~ Moonquill to Tetra. |
“ | Irritated. I've done a lot lately... I kind of need to clear my head from all of this, and what the crews said... *slaps herself* No Moonquill! Your falling for their tricks, you idiot! My dads in the right here, isn't he?! We're not killing people, we're making a peaceful society, it's better for them! Anyways, I believe those two can catch them without me, anyways! I'm going to analyse some terrain... | „ |
~ Moonquill deciding to skive. |
“ | Confused. Freedom?! But I thought it was going to be far more... You know, anarchic?! Stressed. Be myself? But I've always been myself! I don't know why I've become so hyper, I don't want to mess up and act like a crazy person! What the hell is happening to me?! Confused. I... really like these clothes, and that girl seemed so nice... WAIT, SHE'S COMING BACK I NEED TO ORDER SOMETHING AAAAAAAAAA- Oh, the classic Rusty Pasty- Wait should I try something new... | „ |
~ Moonquill’s inner thoughts. |
“ | Observant. So, there's like, tons of races living together. We have that, do we not?! People are doing what they want... No expectations... But it's... What if something happens? Surely it's going to collapse into anarchy even if it's good now... But it's... Angry. COME ON, MOONQUILL! GET IT TOGETHER!!! THEY ARE HAPPY AT HOME! A simple life, but they don't... don't have much to do, and they are all stuck in an old simulation... They get to do so much more and explore- OK, YOUR JUST BEING A SPOILED PRINCESS AREN'T YOU?!? It's better if their in a simulation, isn't it?! That's what your father told you, your father who LOVES YOU, WHO TAKES CARE OF YOU! WHO TRAINED YOU AND MADE YOU THE PERSON YOU ARE NOW!!! | „ |
~ Moonquill struggling to pick sides. |
“ | Hurt. But that nice girl, Sakura... I don't want her to be changed... Will she really be happier? Does she even have a choice in the matter? What if she's... Upset. Her personality and memories will die, and all those people... They'll forget everything... In Denial. I can't. It's for everyone's own good, isn't it...? Right...? Isn't that what they... Confused. We're not tyrants... right? | „ |
~ Moonquill continues to struggle. |
“ | Desperate. W-Well how about this?! If people live how they want, the bad people get to murder innocent people and cause chaos! Y-Yeah! I won't let you deceive me! | „ |
~ Moonquill to Azima and Ludvig, still in denial. |
“ | Calm. Finally, it's night... I'm done running. I'm done hiding. I've been... a bit unstable as of recent. No worries, time to use my brain once more... | „ |
~ Moonquill decides to investigate. |
“ | Shocked. He was... really killing people... These aren't just rebels. These were innocent people! He told me he'd save everyone, not... THIS! *covers her mouth and looks around, then sighs of relief* Nervous. Keep it together... | „ |
~ Moonquill, shocked at her fathers secrets. |
“ | Nostalgic. Katsu, Kumiko, your city... It's beautiful. I... Everyone was... free. I thought that control was the answer to keep order and everyone safe, but... They just seemed so happy, they weren't just getting on with work, they were doing so much. I was told that everywhere that wasn't heavily controlled out there was pure anarchy and chaos, but that's wrong... The universe is so vast, and to take that away... It doesn't feel right anymore. I... I didn't wanna invade it deep down, but I was just trying to force myself to be loyal and... Remorseful. I'm so sorry, I... | „ |
~ Moonquill beginning to reform. |
“ | Informative. I'll tell you how it could have happened. Let's just say that someone found out a few things... (Stormlance: Stern. Are you saying...) Indeed. I freed them. (Stormlance: Betrayed. How could you betray us, I thought you were on the right path...) Stern. Oh, don't you worry. Sending me out to capture the black nebula was the best thing you've done for me, because it's put me on the TRUE right path. With that in mind, I'm not taking orders from you anymore. | „ |
~ Moonquill confronting her father. |
“ | Honest. I understand, but that doesn't mean I agree. I've been in denial for far too long now. Ever since that meeting, their words got into my head. I tried brushing it off, but I gave in. My trip in Solunar Nexus I wasn't just a "scouting mission", deep down, I wanted to see the society that you said was so bad... *laughs* It was BAD?! People were free to do what they wanted within reason, people were having fun rather then just working all the time, there was so much diversity. People could be themselves! It was beautiful... Remorseful. I didn't want to take that away, but I came back 3 days later and betrayed it... I won't forgive myself for not speaking up earlier, but now, I will do it. We're not protecting life at all by doing this, we're restricting peoples lives into constant control! People don't know what it's like to live and be free, we're TYRANTS! | „ |
~ Moonquill acknowledging the wrongs of the glitch empire. |
“ | Informative. Of course, but that's life. You can't have good without bad. Bad things is what helps us grow as people. Society evolves over time. Do you know why we're called the "glitch"? It's because our code is fucked up! We were invented to simulate life, but we got stuck in medieval times. Should the world be stuck in a medieval mindset?! There is so much wrong with the era I once thought was peace! People are killed more often, there's less to do and it's much harsher! Those glitch who are lucky to break free are persecuted, just because they are lucky enough to evolve and adapt. Meanwhile, so many other races, like humans, apex and hylotl, have all evolved and invented amazing things! The apex are the dominant race for a reason, humanity was dominant before the ruin struck for a reason. The hylotl survived a near wipeout, and came out stronger then ever! Do you see? Society won't improve if we were all stuck in a simulation! We have so much potential as a race, and yet it's all wasted! And your trapping everyone in a simulation, where NOBODY can improve as a person! Sorry if people get killed by bad people, but let's not be hypocrites here. We have blood in our hands. Everyone here does, even me... | „ |
~ Moonquill about evolution. |
“ | Confident. Their not "so called". But, since I can't convince you, I'm going to tell you something else that's important... I'm going to join the protectors. And I'm going to help them stop you. (Stormlance: Shocked. So, your fighting against us now?! Moonquill, think about what's best for everyone! What's best for the universe?!) Oh, I am. I told the black nebula that I'll do anything for my kind. That's exactly what I'm doing right now. And by my "kind", I didn't only mean the glitch... I consider all of us one kind, as I think we need to all unite. Back then, it was going along with your plan, but now, it's because we're facing the same threat, you. Goodbye for now. | „ |
~ Moonquill’s decision. |
“ | Remorseful. I... need to make things right, no matter what. Reflective. All my life, I was taught that controlling people was the way to keep society safe, and ensure that there wouldn't be any bad things. My father wants a perfect utopia, but there's no way to get there without lots of suffering... I used to believe that our process of capturing planets was fine, but after he talked to all of you, you made some points that I couldn't shake. I realised how unethical it was, but I didn't want to accept it. I was supposed to come with Kleriya and Ironwall to capture you, but I went to Solunar Nexus instead... | „ |
~ Moonquill to the protectorate. |
“ | Remorseful. I don't think it can be undone... I'm sorry... We lost an amazing star system, which is why I want it to be the last he captures... I don't want to let anyone else be took over again! The worst part is... He killed people, and hid it from me. He said it was to reduce resource loss, but he still hid it with me. He even influenced me with a chip, which got destroyed thanks to being axed in the shoulder... Grateful. Thank you for hitting me with an axe. I've realised the truth now. Controlling everyone isn't the way for a better universe. Society has to grow and evolve, and not be controlled by a tight iron fist. Of course, there's always going to be bad things, but that's just how life is. We shouldn't be punishing the innocents because of them. I tried reasoning with my father, but he didn't listen, he insisted I was poisoned... I know this may be too much to ask... But I'd like to help you stop him. | „ |
~ Moonquill requesting to join the protectorate. |
“ | Stern. Be prepared to face payback for all you've done, and your recent threat, dad... | „ |
~ Moonquill preparing to face her father. |
“ | Remorseful. I'm sorry I had to do that... But you left me no choice. | „ |
~ Moonquill after fatally injuring her father. |
“ | Mournful. Ethyl... You always put others before yourself... You also showed me that people could change for the better... You guided 6 wonderful people, and for that, the universe owes you a lot... But you never wanted anything in return. As the new queen... I promise to live up to you. | „ |
~ Moonquill mourning Ethyl. |
“ | Honest. I mean, a punishment would make sense. I could have you be a farmer for the rest of your life, but... That doesn't seem right. So... I'm releasing you to do what you want. Change your name if you want, explore the vast universe, maybe help those in need. It's your life now, so you make choices. | „ |
~ Moonquill to Ironwall. |
“ | Excited. The glitch are doing great! We're evolving so well, I feel like crying! Nightheart has also been helping all those lost people, he sometimes works as my assistant, so he's had quite the hand in helping me out these past few years! Not to sell myself short or anything. | „ |
~ Moonquill 10 years later, excited about how the glitch are evolving. |
