Scout, true name Jeremy Willis, is the main protagonist of the 2020 SFM Keep Going, Buddy by Poky.

He is a mercenary for RED team who became disillusioned with the constant, seemingly pointless warfare between RED and BLU, becoming depressed in the repetition and turning against his team to find something to make his life worth living.

Biography[]

During the Gravel Wars, RED Scout fought alongside RED team in 2fort. He lived in a small room with a television and an action figure of Heavy (which may represent his conscience). However, Scout grew bored and depressed with the monotonous routine- go to 2fort, fight, lose, die, repeat.

One morning, Scout slept in, ignoring his repeated alarms. When he finally woke up, feeling a headache, he saw numerous texts from Soldier ordering him to report to 2fort and that Scout was late. Shocked at the time, Scout quickly geared up and set out for 2fort, leaving his Heavy figure sad. Arriving at the RED respawn room at 2fort, Scout tried to greet them warmly, but only Heavy and Pyro reciprocated, Sniper insulting Scout by saying he should've stayed home. Hearing that the match was going to begin, Scout sat dejectedly at a bench, resigning himself to another cycle.

When the round started, Scout didn't leave to fight at first. He stayed behind as the team's intelligence was quickly captured. From there, he went from battle to battle, standing and staring blankly as the chaos unfolded around him, his team being slaughtered left and right as he found no will or purpose to fight. Finally, the team lost the round, Scout becoming angrier with the repetition- up until he was shot in the head in the Respawn Room during the humiliation phase of BLU's victory.

Following this, Scout and the team respawned and repeated the match in the next round, Scout once again staying behind as his team rushed out and quickly lost, growing angrier and more fed up with the constant gunfire and screaming. Once again, the match repeated, Scout staying inside the Respawn Room the entire time, hearing his team fail yet again as he could barely take it. The match soon ended in yet another defeat for RED, and Scout could only let out a sigh of relief as the day's fighting came to a close.

Afterwards, the bruised and battered RED team sat in the Respawn Room, where Soldier began berating Scout, but Scout sat numbly and unable to hear Soldier, only sparing the crazed patriot a tired glance. Later, Scout returned home, his Heavy figure even more depressed. Sitting at his bed, Scout looked for an outlet to relax, but found no will to pick up his PS4 or get on his PC. Instead, he turned on the TV, only to find a commercial of Heavy promoting a sandvich for $399. Not finding any escape from his team there, the commercial possibly being a hallucination, Scout turned off the TV and remained sitting on his bed past midnight, glancing at a pistol on his nightstand, his Heavy figure closing its eyes.

Past 3:08 AM, Scout remained awake, lying on his bed now and staring up at his ceiling. With another glance at his gun, Scout decided it wasn't worth it going on, and retrieved the pistol, pressing it to his head and firing- only for the gun to be empty, leaving Scout trembling in rage. Time passed until 8 AM, and Scout had remained seated with the gun against his head.

Returning to RED's 2fort base at the start of the day's fighting, Scout couldn't find the meaning of joining the team, so he sulked off to the sewers of 2fort. There, he came across an equally dejected BLU Engineer, who was sitting alone in the BLU sewer platform. The Engineer and Scout exchanged a silent glance before the round began, and Engineer, assuming Scout would attack due to their opposite sides, resigned himself to death and sat bored and expectant. However, Scout didn't attack, and instead sat next to the BLU Engineer, having finally found someone who was clearly going through the same crisis of purpose as him.

The pair sat in shared depression for a bit, until a BLU Soldier and BLU Heavy came running down the sewers. Scout covered his face as he braced for them to kill him- but BLU Engineer had swiped a cloaking watch from Spy, and used it to cloak both himself and Scout, keeping Scout safe from the threat. When the other BLUs had passed, Engi uncloaked, smiling at Scout as he showed off the watch. Touched, Scout smiled back, glad to have a friend at last- only for RED to lose the round. Scout felt dejected again, and Engineer told him that this cycle would just keep happening and happening. However, Scout smiled again, taking solace in the fact that he'd have a friend to go through it with.

Not bothering to report back to RED, Scout went right home after the day's matches, smiling in bed before finally getting some sleep. The next day, he returned to RED, where Soldier was waiting to confront him. Scout offered him a smile and a peace sign, but Soldier instead threatened to fire Scout for deserting the previous match, spewing some profanities at Scout, who lost his brief joy. This led Sniper to grumble that Soldier wasn't helping, but when Soldier turned back to Scout, he was met with the barrel of Scout's scattergun- moments before Scout snapped and shot Soldier and the rest of his teammates to death. Across the map, BLU Engineer did the same to his team.

Regretting what he did, Scout then sulked off as the round began, not seeing that Spy had survived the massacre by cloaking, just as BLU's Spy did. In the sewers, Scout then met with BLU Engineer again, both unaware that their teams' Spies were stalking them. Engineer shared a sandvich with Scout, just as the Spies reported to the respawned RED team what they had saw. With that, RED and BLU made a truce and joined forces to find Scout and Engineer, who first hid in RED's intel room using the cloaking watch, before escaping back to the sewers. However, during the escape, Engineer dropped the cloaking watch, which was retrieved by BLU Spy.

Later, Scout and Engineer hid in the BLU intel room, seemingly having thrown off their pursuers. The two caught their breath together as the Administrator berated them for their betrayal on the intercom, but were relieved to be free. Then, both Spies uncloaked in the corner of the room, revealing that they had the invisi-watch, much to Scout and Engineer's shock. The rest of RED and BLU then ran in, surrounding the pair.

Resigned to what seemed like an inevitable execution for their treason, Scout simply stared down RED Soldier with his usual tired, depressed look, before looking down in shame as RED and BLU Heavy stepped forth, closing his eyes as he braced for retribution. However, RED Heavy then commenced the Katzotsky Kick taunt, dancing a Cossack dance on the spot, much to Scout and Engineer's surprise. The entirety of BLU and RED then reciprocated, both finally understanding the unending drag of their usual warfare, and Scout and Engineer shared a knowing smile before joining in on the fun.

Together, the two teams danced out of the intel room, across the map, and down the bridge into the night, Scout finally finding a shared joy with his friends and former foes alike, bringing a reason to keep living back to his life.
