Rarity's unnamed former boyfriend (referred to as XXXXX) is a unseen minor antagonist from the My Little Pony Romance Comedy Fanfiction "Dusk Shine in pursuit of Happiness", which was written by Bigsnusnu.
He was described as a handsome yet poor colt who was Rarity's Ex-coltfriend when they first met when she was going shopping in town and invited her for lunch one day. However, he was later shown to actually be a selfish, narcissistic, manipulative and abusive colt who cheated on Rarity and used her for money for his own personal gain.
The Ex-Boyfriend was not mentioned until later in the chapter "Love Can Hurt", where Rarity does mention him within her diary when Dusk Shine got permission to read some parts of it.
Biography[]
At some time back to when Rarity was a filly, she had a quiet, secluded life, being insecure and wanting to be loved and valued even though she had to please people to earn it, even at her school. Rarity would eventually get influenced by one of Cookie Crumbles' (her mother's) friends when the latter showed off some Canterlot fashion magazines, making her become influenced in becoming a fashion designer herself. However, a lot of people did give Rarity strange looks about it before excepting the "new Rarity".
When she became a fully-grown mare, she left her parents to live at a house of her own at Ponyville in a quiet area. However, after several days, she did feel rather lonely. This can sometimes make her feel become insecure that if people saw her of what she was like without the mask of perfection, that people wouldn't love her.
However, she would one day meet XXXXX when she was shopping in town. He would love-bomb her and invite Rarity for lunch, in which Rarity accepts his offer. Rarity was in love with him. They would go to the park, the theater, and to dinner together. Her boyfriend at the time would tell her that he lives from a place far away and was poor. Rarity would tell him that it didn't matter if he was poor, had no money, and that "money matters when there is love". Rarity felt safe with him and even invited him to stay at her house. However, he also claimed to not having money, which was an early red sign that Rarity did not notice.
They eventually had their first kiss together as well. He would shower her with love, and he told Rarity that "nothing else matters", making her whole in a way. This means that Rarity prioritized her generosity and willingness to support him. However. Unknowngst to Rarity, XXXXX exploited Rarity's generosity to his own advantage, which Rarity blindly had faith for him and with her eagerness causing her to overlook the red glags her boyfriend has. While her boyfriend claims to have "no money" Rarity would romanticize it instead of questioning itz deeming love to be permanent. However, the boyfriend had found out about Rarity's fear of being alone or abandoned, and would plan to later exploit it.
However, the next day, when she went to buy new curtains, she would notice that her money in her savings account was empty. Rarity did think that it was a mistake on her part at first. Rarity would know something is wrong at first, but has not fully grasped it yet.
The day after, she would find out that her boyfriend was stealing her money, yet downplay the situation as it it was a misunderstanding. He would then hug her, love-bomb her and make an excuse by saying that he should've asked her before as he was planning to use that money, much to Rarity's annoyance. He would tell Rarity that he would not do that again, and they will hug it out while he makes Rarity believe that he loves her.
However, the next day after that, the boyfriend's personality had drastically changed, this was when his more clearer signs of his abuse is more clear. He would get mad at Rarity for no reason and gaslight her, making Rarity doubt herself, but would show a "tender side" and would force her to forgive him, showing that he would manipulate her, much to Rarity's confusion. This leads to Raroty to wonder if this is what love was like.
Another day passed, and Rarity would go to the market to see that XXXXX was cheating on her with another mare, with the two eating dinner together. This made Rarity see that XXXXX's love was not genuine at all and it made her feel insecure, but doesn't want to let him go and feels like a fool. Rarity would lie to her friends, use a little makeup and eyeshadow as of means to use a mask of perfection to be loved, promising to use cosmetics permanently. She was also worried about how the public eould perceive her and that Rarity would even get emotional at times as her "mask" would start to crack, knowing that someone that she loved was cheating on her. However, her fear of bring alone leads to her ignoring the fact that her boyfriend betrayed her.
XXXXX would continue to cheat, lie, and steal money from Rarity. Anytime she tries to confront him for his actions, XXXXX would shout and scream at her, calling her useless and saying that she should be grateful to have him and that he knew her better than anypony. XXXXX would even exploit her insecurities of being alone, saying that if he left, that Rarity would be all alone and that nopony would ever love her again. This makes Rarity feel very insecure, even seeing herself as a "dumb, insecure mare", as well as feeling shame and blaming herself for how things turned out. Rarity would even show to have cried out for help in her diary as well, showing her feeling of being stuck and feeling helpless.
The next day, Rarity would go out with her friends for breakfast, however, Rarity was struggling to keep the "mask" that she uses to make herself perfect for them, struggling to smile but forces herself to do so due to not wanting to worry them nor to scare them off. Rarity does know that this is a problem, however Applejack does suspect that something is wrong but doesn't know what was going on with Rarity.
Pinkie Pie does get worried too and does seem to know about something is wrong and would stay with Rarity, telling Rarity that if she had a problem that she can trust her and the rest of the Mane Six, saying that it is not good to wear a mask all the time. Pinkie Pie is one of the closest who does understand Rarity, possibly because Pinkie Pie wears her own "mask" with others as well. Rarity wants to trust her friends, but does not want to burden them with her emotional problems nor want them to worry. Pinkie Pie swore herself to keep these difficult promises and helped Rarity with keeping her promise, thus meaning that Pinkie Pie has kept her Pinkie Promise. Rarity promises to leave XXXXX for good, knowing that she needs to fulfill the promise or that Pinkie would give her a thrashing.
However, after several days, Rarity decided that enough is enough and says that she does not want to see XXXXX again and to leave her house. Despite his attempts to manipulate her and attempted to force her to forgive him, Rarity stood her ground, not caring that he did threaten her and that he shouted at her whilst exploiting Rarity's weaknesses by calling her as being being nothing but a "weak and insecure mare".
However, after she told him to leave her house, XXXXX would decide to break Rarity's stuff in her house, throwing everything and yelling at her furiously and insulting Rarity in the worst ways imaginable and attempts to break her spirit, causing Rarity to be scared of him. It would be heavily implied that he physically abused her before pushing Rarity into a chair before he left.
Even after a week of when they both broke up, Rarity was left all alone again, feeling like running to search for him, but immediately reminds her that it would be a very bad idea, in which even Pinkie Pie is aware of Rarity's struggles and would comfort her and reminds Rarity of the pinkie promise, with Rarity knowing that lonliness is not the only bad thing that XXXXX left behind.
Within a couple of days, Rarity would find out that her Ex-Boyfriend decided to spread lies and slander to everypony in town as of means to spite her and to ruin her reputation by telling the other ponies that Rarity was the one who was the manipulative abuser in the toxic relationship to spite her for breaking up with him, making everypony in her town, except for her own friends, to believe the lies that he told them. The Mane Six gave Rarity a small kitten (possible Opalescence) to take care of.
Rarity feels more safe with her friends, and with her friends, she is able to forget all of her problems. However, whenever she was alone, she remembered about all the bad things that happened to him and feels weak and foolish for loving XXXXX. Due to the trauma (including showing some symptoms of PTSD) Rarity was left with, she struggles to trust other guys and chooses to only be with her friends, specifically only the mares. She feels a sense of guilt and would blame herself for not seeing the red flags sooner. The trauma has never really gone away from her Ex-Boyfriend's abuse, as that anytime that a colt looks or even touches Rarity, she would end up remembering the abuse that she was put through by XXXXX.
Rarity does eventually make a decision to not let XXXXX win. Rarity would finally allow herself to cry. She would try to hang out with a friendly colt that invited her to go out with him. She did still struggle with being vulnerable as she didn't want to be hurt again. However, she would end up seeing XXXXX in the colt's face. However, she forces herself to accept despite her fears. However despite her attempts, the fear still haunts her anytime. Every time a colts invited her out they would go out for a walk and enjoy dinner together. However, if a colt were to try to touch Rarity, she would end up shaking in fear and run away, as she cannot stop seeing the face of XXXXX who had kissed her back then. This means that Rarity was left with lasting trauma from the incident with XXXXX.
Later at Rarity's town, Rarity would be given a few nicknames, one in particular that mares would say that Rarity being a 'Femme Fatale', a mare whom uses her beauty to use and dominate colts. Despite this being inaccurate and harmful, Rarity embraces it as a way to cope, even ysing it to ease control of her life even if in reality that itcwas used as a false narrative. This was also encouraged due to the rumors that XXXXX had told the town. However, Rarity did like the nickname 'Femme Fetale', as it makes herself feel good about herself and wanting to be strong.
The next day, Rarity goesto a spa and saw another colt. Even though he was not her type, Rarity still assures herself and flirts with him, embracing the 'Femme Fatale' persona. Rarity felt more self-assured and was proud of her title. When he hugged her, she would notice that she didn't run away that time actually stayed. This was when Rarity was able to bring down her emotional "walls" and actually allowed someone, let alone a colt, to be close. She had finally having a moment of being open and was able to trust again. While Rarity was still worried about being vulnerable, she was now able to risk it to just be happy again. However, her uncertainty and hear of being vulnerable would still linger even to the current day.
While XXXXX was never seen again, his actions left Rarity with insecurities about not being strong enough and having emotional scars as well, as she called herself a "fool" and a "dumb, insecure, mare" in her diary (in the chapter "Love Can Hurt"). More examples of this is also shown when she asks Dusk Shine if he liked being with her to seek assurance from him (in the chapter "A Never-ending Morning"), having a fear of showing any weaknesses or her insecurities to anypony. Thankfully, Rarity does eventually learn to heal from this with the help Dusk Shine, helping her be able to finally open up to him.
When Dusk Shine was given consent by Rarity to read a bit of her diary and saw about the abuse Rarity's Ex-Boyfriend did, he was shown to be shocked and in disgust that The Ex-Coltfriend would treat Rarity so horribly. This would even causing Dusk Shine to hit Hoity Toity in the face in blind rage when he mistook him for being Rarity's Ex-Boyfriend. (as shown in the chapter "Love Can Heal") However, this was a misunderstanding and Dusk Shine apologizes Hoity Toity about that. However, it does say a lot as it shows how disgusted that Dusk Shine is about with the Boyfriend's abuse towards Rarity.
Rarity's former boyfriend, even though Rarity did break up with him, was given very little punishment for his actions, making him a karma houdini.
Personality[]
He was described to be a handsome colt who seemed to be gallant, kind and friendly at first. However, it would later be shown to be a guise that he uses to hide the fact that he is a narcissistic, manipulative, abusive, cheating goldigger who is willing to exploit Rarity for her money without her permission and for his own benefit, even going as far as to treat her like garbage.
His actions towards Rarity, ranging from being abusive, stealing, and cheating on Rarity shows the lack of respect he has to Rarity, who used to be his girlfriend at the time, and how far Rarity's Ex-coltfriend would go to exploit Rarity's weaknesses and refused to take any responsibility for his own actions.
