So, Kammy was defeated along with her sleeping curse... or rather, MY sleeping curse! It was so "nice" of her to steal the credit. She made such an excellent goat... Hmph. At least this so-called "peace" will bide me some time. It will take me a while to make a newer and infinitely more deadly virus, but rest assured... You Toads WILL be plunged into the depths of your nightmares... FOREVER. Just try and stop me... Or better yet... JUST LEAVE ME BE!!!
~ Reckloo revealing himself as the true culprit behind the sleeping curse.
Urrrrggghhh...h--hello? Is there anybody down here? HELLO?! I'M TRAPPED!... Anyone? Help?...There's no one here... I'm all alone............................. YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!! FINALLY... at long last... true peace and quiet! Now no one will EVER find out what I look like! YEEEEE HAW!!!
~ Reckloo finally getting true peace and quiet after getting trapped inside his hideaway.

Reckloo is a supporting character in the 2007 Mario fangame Toad Strikes Back and the overarching antagonist of its 2015 sequel Toadette Strikes. He is an otherworldly, bizarre set of eyes, he appears in every hub world, usually cranky and complaining about the fact that everyone else is being too loud. It is revealed that he was the one responsible for the sleeping curse that had cursed the Mushroom Kingdom: he got so annoyed that he gave the place a sleeping curse in order to get some silence.

Appearance[]

Due to being obscured in the shadows, not much of Reckloo's body is seen other than his yellow eyes. However, during the true final boss fight and right after being defeated, he briefly leaves a silhouette of himself that looks like Wart, the main antagonist of Super Mario Bros. 2 upon "exploding".

Personality[]

In both games in the series, Reckloo is presented as a cranky individual who constantly complains about people not giving him the peace and quiet. However, Toadette Strikes gives him a much darker side, showing how much he's willing to go to get his peace and quiet by creating a powerful virus and sending it to infect Subcon's Dream Machine to cast the sleeping curse that puts the Toads of the Mushroom Kingdom to sleep as well as turn Subcon into the realm of nightmares.

Despite his villainy, Reckloo does show some limits to it. Despite his hatred for Toads, he finds wiping them to be a bit too much for him, so he resorted to just cursing them to sleep instead. He also expresses disdain at Toadette if she chooses to kill Whacka at one point in the game. He's not completely heartless either. He actaully wanted to spare Toadette after he tells her that he created the sleeping curse in the first place. He also had a friend once who's heavily implied to have died long before the events of the game.

Synopsis[]

Toad Strikes Back[]

He appears as a recurring NPC in this game as he appears in every single world, complaining about how he can't get peace and quiet and tells Toad to leave him alone.

Toadette Strikes[]

Prior to the events of the game, after having had enough of being bothered by Toads all the time, Reckloo creates a virus and sends it to corrupt the Dream Machine which. As a result, the sleeping curse is created and starts putting Toads to sleep one by one. It wouldn't be long until the curse catches up to Toadette herself, sending her to Subcon where all the other Toads are. As it turns out, Subcon was transformed into the realm of nightmares as a result of the sleeping curse.

After Toadette breaks the sleeping curse by destroying the virus that caused it and defeats Kammy, Reckloo reveals himself as the true culprit behind the sleepin curse and that he's planning on creating a much deadlier virus, so no Toad would be able to wake up from their nightmares ever again.

When Toadette arrives at the Lost Hideaway, she encounters Reckloo who finally admits to her that he was the one behind the sleeping curse before going deeper into the hideaway. When Toadette follows him, Reckloo tells her that the reason why he even cast that curse was because he thought killing off all Toads would be too brutal for him. Despite this, since Toadette bothered him enough times already, the final battle between the two ensues. After being defeated for the first time, Reckloo decides to set the hideaway to collapse, forcing Toadette to escape. When Toadette reaches the exit, Reckloo suddenly appears to block it, forcing her to play a game of tennis with him. After being defeated again, Reckloo "explodes" and leaves the exit out of the hideaway open, allowing Toadette to escape. It's later revealed that Reckloo survived and that he's finally happy that he's at peace at last.

Trivia[]

  • It's heavily implied that Reckloo was the one who cursed Kammy during the final boss fight in Toadette Strikes.
  • If the silhouette that he briefly leaves upon defeat in Toadette Strikes is of any indication, he might actually be Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2. It also helps that makes frog-like sounds during the true final boss fight with him.
  • Reckloo makes a cameo appearance in Psycho Waluigi, another Mario fangame created by Thunder Dragon, where he rests behind Mokeybags' Black Market Bonanza. If you play as General Hazel (who's unlocked by completing the game 100%), you can use her jetpack to fly past the market and find Reckloo resting in the pile of crates. If you talk to him, he'll complain that he can't have his privacy even in this game, much to his chagrin.
    • He even has the "CTRL" Speech Bubble from Toad Strikes Back that allows you to talk to him.
