Rifaat Ali al-Assad better known as Rifaat al-Assad or simply Rifaat is the main antagonist of the Chinko video "When the Syrian Dictator's brother stages a coup". He is the power-hungry brother of the late Syrian president, Hafez al-Assad who is obsessed with taking over Syria.
He was voiced by Chinko, the creator and operator of the channel of the same name.
Personality[]
Rifaat appears to be an opportunistic and power-hungry individual. After his brother suffered a heart attack, he schemed to take over Syria for himself. He is also absolutely obsessed with his plan to the point where he would regularly launch invasions against Syria only to be constantly foiled. Even to this day, he is still obsessed with taking over Syria and watches it from his portal, waiting for his chance to strike.
Appearance[]
Rifaat has three forms that he takes on throughout the video. His first form is an animated version of his real-life counterpart. His head is a photo of his real-life counterpart's head. He also has a blocky torso which sets him apart from other characters. He wears a dark grayish suit and pants, black shoes, and a white shirt. He also wears a red tie. His second form is a large magical mass that fades from purple to black with a large prominent hood-like section where his face is seen. In this form, he can also give himself large floating hands that appear to be made up of four black and purple claw-like fingers. In his present form, he has the same head, although to show his aging, his arms are bony, pale and frail. He also has long claw-like fingers. He also wears a cloak that fades from black to purple with sleeves and a large collar of the same color.
History[]
In this video, Rifaat is established as the brother of the then president of Syria, Hafez al-Assad. After Hafez suffers a heart attack in November of 1983, Rifaat suddenly started to have power hungry ambitions and schemed to take his brother's place. Although his brother was more popular with people. Hafez eventually recovers from his heart attack in 1984. Despite this, Rifaat still wants to take over Syria, so he plots to stage a coup. Rifaat later appears to battle Hafez in his head form where he sends his minions to destroy him but failed. On March 30, 1984, Rifaat gathered his 55'000 minions to discuss his "evil coup plan". He then sent his minions to Damascus. After hearing that Rifaat was heading to Damascus, Hafez left his headquarters to confront Rifaat in his head form. Hafez told Rifaat that he wants to meet him in his lair face to face and requests that he doesn't use "scary illusions or magic whatnot". After meeting up, Hafez brags to Rifaat about how he would always be inferior to him while Rifaat says he will defeat Hafez and take over Syria. Rifaat then punches Hafez, prompting a battle to ensue. Hafez punches Rifaat to a wall and Rifaat casts a spell in retaliation. The spell causes Hafez to suffer a heart attack, and he throws a tantrum over Rifaat's use of magic. Rifaat then charges up another attack, and the top of his head detaches from his lower jaw in a mechanical manner, and he shoots a laser at Hafez who narrowly avoids the attack by disappearing. Rifaat then starts to cower in fear as Hafez appears behind him and punches him. This causes Rifaat to fly upwards and fall, Rifaat then lands and dashes to and tackles Hafez. This causes a drawn-out Rock 'Em Sock 'Em sequence where Hafez punches Rifaat and Rifaat tries to punch Hafez, but he blocks. Rifaat ends the sequence by flipping which causes him to kick Hafez twice and headbutt him. Rifaat then punches Hafez which causes him to crash into a wall. Hafez then regains his composure and rushes to Rifaat who grabs his fist when he tries to punch him. Rifaat then kicks Hafez which causes him to disappear. Rifaat is frozen in shock as Hafez teleports behind him and kicks Rifaat, sending him flying. Rifaat then floats in the air, waiting for Hafez to come to him and Hafez jumps to Rifaat and they rapidly punch each other until Hafez punches Rifaat away. Hafez then kicks Rifaat which causes a massive explosion and ends the battle. Rifaat is now tied up and Hafez taunts him over his defeat. Rifaat then becomes sad and after more bickering, Hafez exiles him to Europe. Rifaat was temporarily allowed to return to Syria to attend the funeral of his mother in 1992. In 1994 after the death of Hafez's oldest son and heir Bassel, Rifaat returned to Syria in his head form to launch an invasion on Syria, but his plans are foiled once more after Hafez told him that he appointed his younger son Bashar as heir. After Hafez died in 2000, Rifaat, again in his head form, tried to seize the opportunity to take over Syria once again, taking advantage of the fact that Hafez can no longer protect Syria from his invasions. This fell flat after the military battled Rifaat until he left. After this defeat, Rifaat seemingly stopped invading Syria, but it was shown that even in the present. It is shown that Rifaat has actually been hiding in his lair watching Syria from a portal-like device as he gloats about how Syria will eventually be his. Showing he is still planning to strike once more.
Trivia[]
- Rifaat's depiction in the video parodies Kaos, the main antagonist of the Skylanders video game franchise. This can be seen through how his head form parodies Kaos' head projection from Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure and how he watches Syria from what resembles a Portal of Power. A plot device in the series that Kaos also uses for his head projection.
- Judging by his dialogue and Hafez behavior towards him, this implies that Rifaat became vengeful towards his brother because of Hafez bullying him by making him feel inferior.
- Due to the fact one of his attacks during the fight was a magic spell that gave Hafez a heart attack which was also what caused his death, it is possible that in the Chinko universe, Rifaat had a connection to Hafez's death.
