Riya Sharma is a major antagonist in the Mexican animated franchise Disventure Camp, a web series based on Total Drama. She serves as the main antagonist of the second season and one of the two main antagonists (alongside Alec) of Disventure Camp: All-Stars.
For the first half of season two, Riya remained as a background character while James and Yul served as antagonists. Feeling isolated and insecure about her position in the game, she took advantage of Rosa Maria's trusting nature to get further in the game and cement herself as the main antagonist. She joined the game to save her failing career as a Bollywood actress, and will do whatever it takes to win, including eliminating those close to her.
She is voiced by Guillermina Lembo in the Spanish dub, and Nympha Mariposa in the English dub. In the Polish dub, Soniuss voiced her.
Appearance[]
Riya is an Indian woman that has black eyes and long dark brown hair that she wears in a ponytail. In Season 2, she wears a yellow dress with a red jacket over it and red sandals. She is also 5'8/1.77cm tall.
Her main outfit becomes more elaborate in Disventure Camp: All-Stars, and she now sports a yellow tube top, a dark brown alpaca fur coat and red Capri pants. She also wears large gold-framed cat-eye sunglasses with burgundy lenses on her head, a pearl necklace, several gold bracelets and dark reddish brown mid-calf boots. Her ponytail is also now held by a gold hair tie.
Personality[]
Upon first arriving at Camp Tipiskaw, Riya is initially a friendly and demure woman who is focused on expanding her acting career. She is shown getting along well with people such as Connor and Rosa María, and is disapproving of Yul's antics. However, after she reaches the merge, the prospect of fame and fortune causes her to take on a more competitive and cutthroat edge. She then goes on to double cross her closest allies one-by-one in order to advance herself in the game. By Episode 11, Riya's personality has drastically changed for the worse; she has completely lost all regard for the lives of the people around her, possibly forever, and only cares about winning the money and furthering her career. In Episode 12, she is ruthless enough to leave Aiden hanging for his life on the edge of a cliff. In Episode 13, she seemingly has a change of heart after being talked down to by her former friends.
In Disventure Camp: All-Stars, after getting newfound fame in network dramas and dubbed "The Villainess of TV" by the internet, Riya has become egotistical and mean to others, and she is seen callously mocking the other contestants in Ep 1. However, as revealed by Connor in Ep 2, it seems to only be a persona that Riya puts on for the cameras, as she still has her kind and caring side when she's alone with Connor when the cameras are off, although she betrays him to stay with the Villains Alliance in Episode 6. As seen in Episodes 4 and 5, she is also willing to back-stab her own alliance for her personal benefit.
Later in the season, Riya's harsh decisions appear to be weighing on her, as she appears rather nervous and distraught from the cameras' pressure to always play her "villain job" perfectly. She also shares a heartfelt moment with Alec, as well as confirming what she feels for Connor when a lie detector came into play. In Like a Dark Horse, Riya receives a letter from her little sister, Eesha, who also wishes to pursue acting. Riya does not want this for her, as she finds Hollywood to not be for everyone. Despite this, Riya's stubbornness to cling to her acting job as well as her desperation to win seems to be leading her down a destructive path.
After winning All-Stars, she begins to react after all this and her actions. Riya goes to Connor in the bus stop, instead of trying to apologize him she tells the cameras are gone and Connor asks what difference does it make, Riya says she finally stop "pretending" and goes to hug him, but after constantly mistreating, insulting and backstabbing him so many times Connor stops her and tells her off she can't write everything she did as an act and now knows the real her, and that she (and Yul) refused to change. Riya says that she still won anyways but Connor asks her was it worth it, Riya tells Connor to go ahead of being mad at her like the other, but Connor answers the very same thing Rosa Maria told Riya after betraying her and Connor tells Riya to have a nice life as he leaves forever. Riya looks at her phone where the contestants live happy lives, Connor has completely moved on from Riya as he has met someone and is happily married, Riya drops a tear as she lost Connor forever, she smiles at her awards but still goes back being sad as her sister calls her. Riya may have won but got the sad ending; all alone and is hated by everyone who wants nothing to do with her.
Biography[]
Riya is a Bollywood actress who moved to the United States two years ago to continue her career, however after trying many times she has only had a couple of roles as an extra, Riya is running short of money and Disventure Camp is her last chance to get a big break in the industry. She comes off as very polite and kind with others, while forming her strategy in her head. She doesn't share much about what she's thinking with others, and is part of what leads to her insecurity in the game, despite Connor, Rosa Maria and Lake reaching out to her and offering friendship and solace. She ultimately doesn't care about them and instead keeps her eye on the prize, willing to toss them aside to advance herself. Despite being two-faced and generally in control of her emotions, Riya is still susceptible to manipulation herself, as Karol was able to talk her into further distrusting everyone in the game. Her trust issues are what have lead to her villainous nature, despite her claiming and gaslighting herself into believing that she is in the right, failing to realize that her actions go beyond the game.
History[]
Disventure Camp (Season Two)[]
- In "Pilot", Riya is introduced and does very little to make a splash. She introduces herself to the others and addresses her situation, then works alone in the challenge where she wins the final section for her team after Oliver has a mental breakdown.
- In "Open Your Eyes", Riya again flies under the radar and avoids conflict with her team during the challenge. She bonds with Connor, while also quickly catching on to how problematic Yul is. She falls asleep in the middle of the challenge though, and isn't seen afterwards.
- In "The Kiss-a-Thon", Riya further bonds with Connor and helps him realize that he doesn't need to pretend to be cool in order to fit in. She successfully kisses everyone required for the challenge, and the seeds of her villainy begin here after Yul costs their team the challenge and causes Kai's elimination thanks to him, Hunter, Ally, and Tess voting for Kai. A second round of elimination is held, and Connor quits to protect Riya, although this leaves her with no allies left in the game on a team where everyone else is allied against her.
- In "Truth Hurts", Riya is able to find a totem that switches two players' team placements. She uses this to get rid of Yul and bring Rosa Maria onto her team, creating a safer position in the game for herself. It's here that Riya elaborates on her failed career, admitting to getting nothing but extra roles instead of the promising film career she had hoped to get from Bollywood. Her team wins this challenge, and Yul's power is entirely evaporated in the game thanks to her.
- In "You Are a Monster!", Riya and Rosa Maria search for the immunity totem together, which Rosa Maria ends up finding, but keeps hidden from Riya. The two bond, with Rosa Maria swearing to protect Riya and do whatever she can to keep her in the game and treat her as a friend. During the challenge, Riya succeeds in the tasks given to her, including wearing clown makeup in an attempt to humiliate her. Their team again wins the challenge, and Yul is eliminated due to being stranded without his allies and James poisoning him.
- In "Not as Easy as it Seems", Lake rejoins Rosa Maria's alliance, now supplying Riya with two allies in the game when there were 8 players remaining. The low budget challenges goes awry, and in combination with James taking her down with him, Riya is unable to win immunity. With Hunter being safe, Riya opts to target Tess and weaken his alliance. This scheme works, and Tess is eliminated that night, leaving Riya's alliance as the largest in the game.
- In "Nightmare in Tipiskaw", Rosa Maria reveals the immunity totem she found to Riya and Lake, letting them know to tell her whenever they believe they are in danger, as the totem would save them. Instead of being thankful for this safeguard, Riya instead sees this as a threat and possible lack of trust from Rosa Maria. When Hunter again wins immunity and Karol returns to the game, Riya's alliance is targeted for being the largest, with Lake as the prime target to eliminate. Ally tries to persuade Riya into voting for Lake, and instead of informing Rosa Maria, she stays quiet and just lets Lake be eliminated in order to keep Rosa Maria and her idol to herself, viewing Lake as a threat despite being in an alliance with her. Rosa Maria is upset by this, but Riya still stays quiet and doesn't let her know what really happened.
- In "Sabotage Below Zero", Karol talks to Riya about her position in the game, relating to her in an attempt to get Riya to vote for Aiden or James. Riya doesn't vote for them that night, but she does further lose trust in Rosa Maria despite all the kindness shown to her. Riya partners with Karol for the second of the challenge, which Rosa wins, and then partners with Rosa for the third part. The two crash however and don't win immunity. Karol is taken out of the game after Aiden sabotages her with a spider she gave him. Ally comes to Riya again and asks her to vote for Aiden, James, or Rosa Maria, but Riya instead just votes for Ally and the gamer is eliminated that night.
- In "Popping Trust", Riya steals James's phone and pretends her perfume has been stolen in order to frame Rosa Maria as a thief. Her, Aiden, Rosa, and James team up to eliminate Hunter, but after Rosa decides to warn Hunter about the unfair alliance, Riya plants the phone and perfume into her backpack. Riya has Rosa open her backpack in front of everyone and causes them to believe she was the one who stole everything, and during the elimination ceremony, it is revealed that Riya also stole Rosa's immunity totem, causing her to leave the game. On her way out, Riya taunts Rosa over her loss and lets her know that she was the one who framed her. Now Riya heads into the final four, totem in hand and her friendship bridges burnt.
