My, oh, my, Brucie. All this hard labor just to hide from who you really are.
~ Roger taunting Bruce.
Oh, Bruce, my dear engine. You have no idea how insignificant your entire existence is compared to mine. For you see, I am such a special engine, that I will be puffing proudly, long after you and all the other hen houses on wheels have been melted away.
~ Roger bragging about being "better" than the other tram engines.

Roger is the main antagonist of the upcoming Thomas & Friends fan film Perseus and Tobin, the sequel to Perseus, The Little Trojan, both created by Al Timotheus. He is the evil second personality of Bruce, who is the older brother of the film's secondary title protagonist, Tobin the tram engine (otherwise known as Toby).

He has yet to be given a voice actor, though the first and current consideration is Mr. Berkshire, who also voiced Tobias in Tobias and The Arcane Merchant.

Story role[]

Roger developed as a spirit within the same body as Bruce during the latter's early life (being built between the late 1900s and early 1910s) in the East Anglian harbor following an unknown event, perhaps a tragedy. Every now and then, he would torment Bruce, thinking him to be an inferior personality to him, or something of the sort. Bruce tries to keep control of himself, even when working with his little brother, Tobin (Toby), whom he loves and who loves him back. One day during the late 1930s, after one of Bruce's accidents caused by "Roger," where he crashes into some fish vans and embarrasses himself, he vows to have himself separated from Roger, though he doesn't know how. At first, Roger is angry about this, for it means he won't be able to control Bruce anymore. However, he then sees this as opportunity to push Bruce aside to continue his goals on his own, and he comes up with a plan to weaken Bruce as a means of escape.

One day, in 1939, Bruce was shunting some empty trucks near a workshop area, when a faulty crane started to violently malfunction, prompting the workers and others to get out of the way. Bruce also tries to steer clear, but Roger takes over his conscience and makes him puff too close to the crane, allowing it to fall and crush him. Now, with Bruce critically injured, Roger will have an easier time getting his soul out of Bruce's body. A devastated Toby pleas the dockyard manager to save his brother, but the manager, who unreasonably blames the accident entirely on Bruce, refuses to pay for the repairs. On Toby's last day at the harbor before leaving for his new life on the tramway in East Anglia, Bruce is loaded onto a scrap train and, before he is taken away, he comforts Toby and tells him not to worry about him. As the train leaves the harbor, Bruce is tearful, while Roger laughs maniacally.

Several years pass, and Bruce spends a lot of time being transferred between scrap and smelter yards due to overcrowding. Eventually, in 1942, during the peak of the Second World War, he is declared officially ready for the cutters torch. During his last scrap train ride to the place, however, the train is ambushed, sabotaged and derailed by German soldiers, who steal engines and parts from the train for their advantages. They take Bruce to an engine experimentation facility built and operated by the Nazi Party. The workers manage to repair Bruce, while also building a clone of his body as part of their most recent project. Initially starting off as an empty shell, the cloned tram engine comes to life, having been claimed by the spirit of none other than Roger, who, now also going by his German translation Rüdiger, tries to manipulate Bruce into joining the Nazis with him. Bruce is almost further coerced by the scientists and military officers in charge of the experiment(s), but he manages to escape. While Roger went on to serve the Nazis, primarily by transporting Jewish prisoners to, from, or between camps, Bruce spent the next decade roaming Southern England, sometimes even going back to the harbor, all in hopes of finding Toby.

Personality[]

In contrast to his superior personality, Roger is very rude and arrogant. He tends to be very boastful and sees himself as superior to all the other tram engines at the harbor. Despite being generally kind and caring, Bruce will occasionally develop minor levels of these negative traits whenever he gets too upset over having to deal with his split persona. This can cause Bruce to sometimes have complications with his friends, family, the manager, and even his little brother, Tobin, much to Roger's sick pleasure.

Quotes[]

  • "What a pitiful sight, friend."

Trivia[]

  • This character is based on two other fan characters in the Thomas fandom. Bruce is named for a tram engine in the story "By The Sea" by Noodle Studios, while Roger is based on the titular character from the Narrow Gague horror audio story "The Tragic Tale of Roger." Unlike Noodle Studuios' interpretation, this version of Bruce the tram has a much more positive personality, although he can be vain at times. Meanwhile, like in the audio story, Roger maintains his rudeness and arrogance, and appears as much more evil (though maybe not necessarily pure evil) in this version.
