“ | it's kill or be killed. | „ |
~ Sans's famous quote |
“ | what? didn't you want me to get my enemies into my advantage? or did you want them at your "disadvantage?" your little "royal guard" shtick is falling through the cracks. | „ |
~ Sans revealing his true colors as a psychopath after he almost kills his own brother with an ocean of bones inside of an envelope. |
Sans is the main antagonist of the UNDERFELL animations made by VyletBunni and the main antagonist of Deltatraveler Section 3. He is a sentry in Snowdin and the older brother of Papyrus. Just like the other characters in the Underground, Sans is an aggressive monster trying to kill Frisk on their journey. However, he is not one to be spared so easily.
Appearance[]
Similar to his classic Underfell counterpart, Sans wears a black jacket, red shirt, black shorts and has an eye that glows red/yellow. However, he has a regular grey hood instead of his traditional yellow fur. He wears slippers instead of sneakers and his hoodie will ignite into flames when aggressive and/or attacking. He has a crack on his face in between his left eye and mouth.
Personality[]
Like in most Underfell portrayals, Sans is a short tempered and grumpy skeleton who acts as an antagonist towards Frisk during their time in the Underground. However, he lacks the dark humor, as he does not make puns and jokes very often.
He is not laid back or lazy and is instead more active. When Frisk first encounters him, he outright attacks them and would have killed them if not for Papyrus, who claims they should be killed at a better advantage. Sans is not afraid of Papyrus and does not take him seriously, as he intentionally annoys by ignoring him and calling him boss, a nickname that he hates.
During Frisk's third encounter with the Skeleton bros, Sans is revealed to be a lot more sneaky, smart and blood thirsty than he let on at first. When Frisk chooses not to open the envelope he left for them, he tells Papyrus to open it instead after he gets chastised by his younger brother; Papyrus opens the envelope and swiftly dodges a barricade of bones coming out. Sans calls out a frightened Papyrus for his narcissism and arrogance.
Sans is also shown to be condescending towards Frisk for holding onto their belief that they can change everyone they meet on their journey.
He often tells Papyrus to stop making easier challenges such as when he tells Papyrus to generate another puzzle in the multi-tile puzzle and tells Papyrus to stop wasting time when Frisk tells to repeat the rules of the Puzzle and often tries to sneak up on Frisk when Papyrus is not looking.
In DELTATRAVLER, his personality is the same, but he seems to imply that Kris (or The Soul) ruined his world.
With DELTATRAVELER Section 3, it was revealed that Sans was like his Undertale counterpart but turned into what he was when Frisk and Kris met him when Papyrus and Sans moved to Snowdin.
Biography[]
GG!Underfell[]
Episode 3: Toriel's Insanity[]
Sans appears near the end of the video where he stalks Frisk and Flowey, which the latter points out while getting terrified. After a nearby sound distracts Frisk, Sans then charges towards them while Flowey yells to them to look out. Sans then attacks Frisk's soul before being interrupted by Papyrus who tells him to stop what he's doing. Sans reluctantly replies as Papyrus scolds him for trying to kill Frisk and how he just kills things right away and how he sees killing as an art form, which Sans brushes off as being ineffective. When Papyrus explains why he must kill a human, Sans reminds him of the rules while calling him "boss" which infuriates Papyrus. After the two bicker a bit, Papyrus brings Sans along with him to go prepare the traps, Sans tells Frisk and Flowey he'll see them soon before leaving.
Episode 4: Desolate Snowdin[]
Sans appears with Papyrus who asked him why there was no trap at where they were. Sans tells him he didn't think it wouldn't be effective, much to Papyrus' annoyance. The two then notice Frisk watching them and when Papyrus goes on a speech of how he'll kill them, Sans tries to sneak closer to them. Papyrus catches him in the act before he could get close. He eventually leaves with Papyrus after the latter finishes his speech.
He appears with Papyrus at the invisible maze puzzle where Papyrus is lecturing Sans about how he's killing others right away where Sans just tells him that traps are lame. The two then notice Frisk again and while Papyrus is explaining the rules of the puzzle, Sans walks on the maze and gets his brother electrocuted twice. And when Papyrus walks over the puzzle to give the orb, Sans tells him to take off his boots, so he doesn't leave a trail. After Frisk solves it, Papyrus tells them that Sans prepared the next trap and Sans tells them to get ready before leaving.
Sans appears again with Papyrus who explains the trap made by him. Which seems to be a normal letter. However, Frisk does not open it due to Flowey telling them not to trust it. When Papyrus complains to Sans about it not doing anything, Sans tells him that he does a lot of talk but not enough persuasion and challenges him to open the letter. Papyrus accepts it and opens the letter, but quickly dodges when a bunch of bones fly out. Papyrus is mortified at Sans nearly getting him killed, but Sans micks him and his dreams of joining the royal guard which makes Papyrus furious. But Sans leaves when he tells him it's not about him. When Papyrus leaves, Flowey is suspicious on how Papyrus isn't as malicious as Sans is.
Episode 5: The Forest of Wild Beasts[]
After Frisk and Flowey find the final latter piece in the forest, Sans ambushes them and teleports in front of Q.C's home before they can get inside and attacks them. He then mocks Frisk for trying to make things better when the world is kill or be killed. Frisk then gets up and grabs the torch. But before the two could fight, Q.C tries to attack Sans, but he disappears before she could hit him.
Episode 6: Papyrus's Dastardly Puzzles[]
Sans appears with Papyrus in the color tile puzzle. he doesn't do much in this episode besides telling Papyrus to stop wasting time before he could repeat the rules. After Frisk solves the puzzle and Flowey tells Papyrus that they've done enough puzzles, Sans tells him it's time to quit playing games, but Papyrus refuses and both leave afterwards.
Episode 7[]
TBA (will be added when the episode releases)
DELTATRAVELER[]
Events will mostly play out the same as in the animations until Kris, Susie, and Noelle meet the skelebros at the end of the bridge. Papyrus shows off the Gauntlet of Deadly Terror to the trio and what'll do. But after Noelle tells him that it isn't fair, Sans tells Papyrus not to listen to her and he thought it was perfect. but Papyrus agreed with Noelle and attempted to turn it off, but Sans got ahold of the controls before he did. He then tells his brother to value one thing above anything else. And that is the world is kill or be killed. Sans will then kick Papyrus off the cliff (Which the latter grabs ahold onto in time) and charge towards Kris. Kris then slams Sans on the ground as he falls off the bridge.
Sans will then appear again trying to get Kris' soul, but Susie attacks him, but he punches her back. He then reveals that he remembers an orphan from the city and says she's one with the wind, implying he killed the Susie from his world. He then says he couldn't see her die due to bailing the crime scene and not getting any attention from it. He then tells them he'll relish killing the trio, but Kris suddenly stabs his skull with their knife, dealing 560 damage. Sans then knocks them off and prepares to fight the three.
At the end of his boss battle, Sans then gets tired after slamming Kris' soul. Here, the boss fight can end in five different ways...
Sleep Mist (Pacifist)[]
If Noelle uses Sleep Mist on Sans, he'll try to fight the spell while threatening the trio before eventually falling asleep. Susie will tell Kris she was close to killing him herself and tells Noelle he shouldn't live because he showed no remorse in killing her from his universe. When the trio try to leave, Sans will mumble in his sleep, making Susie try to kill him. Papyrus shows up before she could do so, revealing he survived getting pushed off the cliff. He then laments to Sans over his sudden change when they got to Snowdin and even wonders if he cares for him anymore. He then takes off his battle body armor and places it in front of him. And decides to go his separate way from his brother after apologizing to the trio.
Kill Him (Any Route)[]
If Sans is killed normally by Susie, his bottom jaw will fall off. He then chuckles to himself about Susie attacking him in return. He then tells Susie why he's not yelling in pain. It's because he knows that it doesn't truly avenges the orphan and tells he that she doesn't have a family that cares if she's dead. Sans laughs manically as Susie slaughters him down into pieces until he becomes dust with his laugh echoing out.
Iceshock Kill[]
If you use Noelle's iceshock spell on him, Sans drops his sadistic persona and comments on how cold it is and how cruel fate is before being frozen solid.
Talk To Him[]
If you talk to Sans, he will be confused as to why you're trying to make a conversation with him. When asked what happened after he attacked his world's Susie, he tells you that he left before he could see her die. If you ask if she really is dead, Sans then admits that he lied about killing Suzy as he couldn't bring himself to kill a child. He elaborates saying that the fear in her eyes reminded him of how horrible his life had become. He then says nobody deserved to live in the underground due to how hostile it was, and he believed to make it better was to destroy it by getting stronger from killing weak monsters and taking a human soul.
He then explains that Papyrus didn't get it due to his optimism and tried to steer him into his path to make him see things his way. But Sans then realizes that he could've killed Papyrus from knocking him off the cliff and that he only made things worse for everyone in Snowdin, including him and Papyrus. Sans then starts crying as his sprite turns from red to white as the weight of his sins crawls up his back.
Papyrus then speaks up hearing everything he had revealed. He asks his brother if everything he said was true. Sans tells him he wasn't supposed to hear any of what he said, believing he shouldn't worry about it. Papyrus then angrily berates Sans for everything he did and how his goals were completely selfish. And how he became a part of the problem and didn't see what he had left. Papyrus explains that he misses the times when the underground wasn't a complete mess and lectures Sans on what he took for granted.
Sans then looks up at Papyrus and tells him he doesn't know what to do anymore due to his actions and believing he is beyond the point of redemption. Papyrus says he isn't sure either, admitting he doesn't know if he could forgive him. But he tells Sans he shouldn't give up and tells him that if he wishes to make amends with everyone that he must try. He then offers Sans to walk with him so they can go their own paths of redemption, Sans asks about him being a royal guardsman, Papyrus then tells him that he is not pursuing that goal anymore due to hearing his confession and says he wishes to try and help people instead. Sans then hopes Undyne doesn't kill him for doing so, which he agrees to. Papyrus then apologizes to the fun gang on their behalf for everything they put them through and thanks them for making them realize their grave realities. The brothers agree to go home, before Sans jokingly calls Papyrus boss one more time (who lets it slide that time) and they both leave.
Sleep Mist (Obliteration)[]
If Noelle uses Sleep Mist on Sans, he is taken aback at the fact you spared him despite killing everyone and torturing the trio. He then sees that he went off the deep end and calls out the player for their actions. He then leaves the trio in disgust to fall asleep elsewhere.
Trivia[]
- Sans's crack could hint at his connection to this AU's W.D Gaster, especially since Papyrus has a crack going from his right eye and upwards.
- However, upon the release of DELTATRAVELER Chapter 3, it can be assumed that they got it from violence rather than being a connection to someone as Papyrus stated after the protagonists put Sans to sleep that Sans bashed his head for not finishing off someone, possibly resulting in the crack.
- He is the one who commonly announces the "Kill or be Killed" motto rather than Flowey.
- According to the official Deltatraveler account on Tumblr, Sans' LOVE is estimated to be between LV 15-18.
- Similar Flowey from the original Undertale, Sans attacks Frisk during their first encounter, proving himself to be a dangerous enemy to them on their journey. However, in contrast to classic Flowey who only attack Frisk at the start of their adventure and towards the end, Sans continuously tries killing them when given the opportunity.
