	~ Shadow Mario’s speech to his army

Shadow Mario is the titular main antagonist of the animated MJacobBarker's YouTube mini series The Legent of Shadow Mario, which happens in the world of the video game Super Mario 64. He is the own Mario, except he became evil after he absorbed the dark black smoke, taking control of his mind and changing completely his personality. He seemed to be the secondary antagonist since the Princess of Darkness appears, but Shadow Mario was the major reason of the evil stuff over the story.

Appearance

Before the black smoke possessing Mario, he has his default appearance with his red M cap and his blue overalls. But, once the black smoke possesses him, both his appearance and his personality change completely, his eyes and clothes goes black, with red eyes as a symbol he holds the power of the black smoke, and always with them half closed. Besides that, when Shadow Mario gets hold of a new other smokes, his appearance changes.

Initially, in his first form when he gets possessed by the black smoke, only his eyes and his clothes go black and dark, but second form consists in the black wings on his wing cap, being it a symbol of the white shadow smoke, just as the red eyes are for the black smoke.

His third appearance changes in his black wings, what gets added to it is some purple smudges, after he absorbs the purple smoke he found getting out from a chest floating on the lava, making the purple smudges the symbol of the purple smoke he has taken hold.

His fourth, and final form, is for his dark blue shoes and gloves, which is the symbol of the blue smoke after he takes hold of it.

Even if both Luigi and Mario reach a part of the story where they two have the black smoke and the white smoke, it doesn’t make Mario to look like Luigi or vice versa, Mario remains black as default for his character because the black smoke is the first smoke he absorbs, and the same goes to Luigi, who firstly absorbs the white smoke, so he remain white as default.

Personality

Along with his appearance, his personality changes as well. Mario turns, from the heroic noble hero he is well known as, to a cruel and dark one who wants even more power and strength (also capture Princess Peach to turn her evil too).

Shadow Mario’s darkness goes completely against Mario’s heroism, positive thoughts, kindness, careful deeds and care about people’s safety. Shadow Mario gets to want all the other smokes of the four shadows responsible for different powers, already being the main holder of the black smoke, responsible for strength, his greedy power hunger makes him to seek for the other missing smokes, wanting his power and strength to increase bigger and also to have more abilities that each smoke would allow him to have.

Throughout the story, it is more than obvious that the story says by itself Mario was all out of himself and brainwashed by the black smoke. Even when Luigi tried to bring the own Mario’s memories back, it only angered Shadow Mario making him to attack Luigi multiple times, truly assuring this when he finally gets the last of the four shadow smokes and taunting Luigi, saying that Mario was already dead, since he was truly taken and influenced by the evil power of the black smoke. It almost ended up in a bad ending with Luigi being completely defeated by Shadow Mario and giving up on trying to stop him, giving the impression it was dead end for Mario, Luigi and the Mushroom Kingdom.

History

Prologue

The birth of Shadow Mario

As most probably, Mario has taken an invitation of Princess Peach to go to her castle. While Mario is arriving at Peach's castle, he stops in front of the entrance and notices a mysterious black smoke appears flying from the top of the castle and it getting closer to him. When the smoke stops in front of Mario, he starts running from it, as it follows him. He keeps running down until getting stuck by fences and a green hill surrounding him, then the smoke covers Mario, possessing him. In that moment, Shadow Mario is born.

Luigi enters the castle and looks confused at Mario, who is standing in the stair top. Mario jumps down the stairs and asks Luigi about Peach, Luigi says she is inside the pyramid from the Shifting Sand Land, then, Mario covers himself with the black smoke and goes his way straight to the pyramid to search for Peach. He gets in the underground hall and walks through the water to the Shifting Sand Land.

There, he enters in the pyramid to search for Peach, but he didn't know it was Luigi's strategy to trap him. Luigi tries to get him stuck inside the pyramid by blocking the entrance with a giant block and keep Peach safe, but he escapes by the top, kidnaps Peach and vanishes flying up to the sky.

The White Smoke

Shadow Mario pursues Luigi

As Luigi manages to find the white smoke in the sky, Shadow Mario stands up in the falling balls ramp from Hazy Maze Cave, keeping Peach up on the platform above him. He goes up to the platform, threatening to apparently harm Peach, but a white smoke appears floating up from the hole where the falling rocks fall, Mario gets down the floor again to see what was that white fog floating around. When it gets to the ground, Luigi appears out of it, entirely white with wings on his cap. Mario runs to try to catch him but Luigi jumps up through him, flies, gets Peach and starts escaping from Mario, as he fades again to the black smoke and starts pursuing Luigi.

They fly down the cave to the metal cap course, Luigi flies out from the cave through the waterfall, returning to the front of the castle and bringing Peach covered in his white smoke with him. Mario's smoke floats down at them from Luigi's back and stops floating in front of him, Luigi fades to his white smoke form. Both stares at each other for few seconds, floating still in the air, thrilling that moment, until Luigi quickly starts flying away and Mario pursues him again. Both flying faster, their pursue keeps going from the castle entrance to the Bob-Omb Battlefield, and they fly up to Jolly Roger Bay, where they finally stop and confront each other smoke against smoke.

After the confront, Luigi finds himself underwater and Mario was gone. Luigi calls for him, but no answer is heard. Leaving the Jolly Roger Bay' painting, he finds a suspicious Mario standing aside the stairs, then Mario runs up to the big star door room, Luigi enters the room but Mario has mysteriously vanished again. As Luigi walks closer to Peach's portrait at the end of the room, her image fades darker, and he falls down in a trap.

Princess of Darkness

Luigi wakes up and finds himself in the Wiggler cave in Tiny-Huge Island. Mario comes back and jumps up in front of him, still with his strange suspicious behavior, but he already gets away jumping pillar by pillar, stopping towards the cave entrance, and Luigi goes after him. Mario stays still in front of the entrance as Luigi gets out with Mario behind him, suddenly, a purple smoke rushes and catches Mario. It keeps flying around, after Luigi, as he goes to a white box with the wing cap up on the hill, when Luigi was about to get whatever there was in the box, the purple smoke rushes again, this time, trying to get Luigi, but it couldn’t.

Luigi have escaped the purple smoke and starts to fly away with it behind, they go above the lake and fight smoke against smoke, shoving each other until the strength of both powers cause an explosion that sends them back to the castle.

Luigi returns and hears the sound of the door closing behind, he get out and sees Mario walking away. They get in the mirror room with Mario turned his back at Luigi and facing the mirror wall, the first words of the dialogues comes from here as Mario says he was glad of Luigi had followed him, Luigi gets worried, and Mario turn at him, revealing his dark red eyes. Mario recaps Luigi already fell into one of his traps and says he has just fallen into another, Luigi walks closer to him, then Mario tells “they” needed something from him, making already the idea that it was his white smoke, and if he told them where it was, Mario could share it with him, but Luigi refuses. Mario turns again walking few steps forward, threatening he would attack Luigi, he turns back and throws a black smoke at Luigi’s direction, but Luigi disappeared, for the smoke hits a pillar, Luigi was hiding upside down under the ceiling. Luigi gets down and attacks Mario, but he dodges his white smoke, Luigi jumps and flies towards the Snowman’s Land painting to escape from Mario, he throws his black smoke against Luigi, but he makes it into the wall in time to avoid the attack. Mario, still in the mirror room, covers himself with his black fog and fades to his Shadow Mario form and enter the course.

Luigi, standing above the giant snowman’s head, sees Shadow Mario down on the ground, who also sees him up above, Mario fades to the black fog and flies up to reach Luigi, but Luigi activates the wind blown from the snowman’s mouth, making Mario’s way impossible and blowing him down to the ground again, getting him stuck in the snow, Luigi jumps down at him but gets stuck likewise Mario. Behind Mario, the purple smoke returns like teleporting someone or something, as it condenses, it reveals to be a teleportation, it was Peach, who has turned to the Princess of Darkness.

The Princess notices Mario failed in discovering where Luigi found the white smoke and orders him to lock up Luigi for her next plan. Shadow Mario gets Luigi stuck in an iced platform inside the igloo, standing by for the Princess’ return. While guarding Luigi’s prison, he says if Luigi knew what he was about to ask, and the Princess enters the igloo with Princess Daisy as her hostage, threatening her murder if Luigi didn’t tell them where the white smoke was found. Luigi leads them all to the sky at the exact place where the white smoke was, but, as both don’t see it there, the Princess thinks he lied to them and kills Daisy. The Princess tells Luigi to meet them at the courtyard whenever he wants to tell them “the truth”, then she and Shadow Mario fly away, leaving Luigi crying for Daisy’s death.

The Shadow Secrets

After Luigi getting back at the outer castle and finding Toad, who tells him he knew how to defeat the Princess and Mario, Toad reveals Luigi the truth of the four shadow smokes mystery. The Black Smoke: shadow of strength; the Purple Smoke: shadow of teleportation; the White Smoke: shadow of speed; Blue Smoke: shadow of invisibility. Toad, then, leads Luigi to the Dire Dire Docks and tells him if they could get them into the underwater sucking hole, they would never escape, and hence dying.

Luigi and Toad, putting their plan in action, go to the castle courtyard to meet Mario and the Princess again. The Princess and Mario were still there waiting for him, just as they told him. The Princess says she is sure Luigi would not lie to them again and tells him to lead the way to the white smoke, Luigi flies away with the Princess and Mario following behind, and Toad disguised with his invisibility shadow.

They get to the Dire Dire Docks, and Toad fades in hiding on a platform above them. While Luigi starts taking the Princess to the “white smoke”, carrying on with his plot of their plan, Shadow Mario notices Toad on the platform above and goes up, foreshadowing to attack him from behind. Toad escapes Mario, as he saves Luigi after foiling to get the Princess into the hole, almost getting sucked in. Luigi stands safe on the platform and Toad confronts Mario with smoke against smoke, as well as Luigi lifting to fight the Princess. Both pair confronting each other fly up and Toad, Luigi and Mario stand on the floating platforms, Luigi and Mario attack each other with their smokes, but Luigi’s last blow is reflected by Mario, making Luigi’s white smoke hit and knock Toad down into the water, approaching him to the sucking hole, Luigi jumps at him to try to save Toad, but it was too late. As Toad is about to get into the hole, he only says “Plan B” to Luigi, and dies getting sucked in.

The Princess, wondering if both have died yet, Mario watches around and confirms to her that both of them were dead already, thinking Luigi has been killed too. With the Princess being sure of their deaths, she orders Mario to find their corpses and to extract their shadow smokes, then to go to the cave and find out through the maps where the dock hole led to, then she fades and flies away and Mario walks out, and Luigi is revealed to be hiding from them in a underwater tunnel, he also swims away.

Mario gets into the Hazy Maze Cave and checks the map on the start, he sees a way forward and goes along through it, after killing a spider. Mario keeps walking to the elevator sector and senses something behind him: it was Luigi hiding behind a pillar. Stopping in front of the toxic maze exit, he takes a look around, feeling like something or someone was watching him. Then Luigi falls behind him and gives Mario three beatings, knocking him down on the floor, Mario starts running and Luigi runs after him, until he crosses the Princess’ way, affirming her Luigi was still alive. The Princess supposes to him if Luigi would know about where Toad’s blue smoke was and that if he found it, it would be hard for them to defeat him. Then, he follows her to help in another idea she has.

Mario spreading his power throughout Bob-Omb Battlefield

Both Shadow Mario and the Princess of Darkness go to the Bob-Omb Battlefield to ask for help of the creatures that dwell in there, like the Goombas, Koopas and the Bob-Ombs. Mario fades to his black fog form and spreads his power around the battlefield to share it with the creatures, as the Princess promises them the power and ordering to find and defeat Luigi in return.

All while Luigi walks inside the haunted house and goes through the secret door behind the wall, where he finds and takes hold of another mysterious black smoke, have remembered the conversation between two boos in the main entrance door hall while hiding with Toad.

Fountain of Blood

Mario finished giving part of his powers to the creatures of the Bob-Omb Battlefield, and he tells the Princess he felt weak, she says it isn’t surprising, since he has just shared his part of his power with the creatures, but Mario tells her that time is different, because he remembers how he has felt when he gave her some of his power and that occasion was not the same as before. Mario remembers the Princess about the deal they made a time ago: he shared his power with her and she shared hers with him. She tells him it would be made right soon, and fades away. Mario left alone in the battlefield, a piece of white smoke falls near him from the sky and he looks up, foreshadowing he would later be after this other white smoke.

With Luigi have absorbed the power of the other black smoke, he dies and finds him with Toad’s spirit. Toad tells him he was dead, but only in few minutes, then he reveals another part of the legend of the shadow he didn’t tell him before and that no one else knew: after the shadow smoke were set free, they split in two, and each shadow smoke landed very far from their other halves, landed very well hidden so nobody would find them, but, as Toad fears, Mario discovers this secret, as he goes after the other half of the white smoke in the flying Rainbow Ship and have it. Even so, Toad tells Luigi what he still could do in order to defeat Mario, he has already found the other black smoke, so what he needs to do is to find the other purple smoke and extract the blue smoke from his body, so he would be stronger enough than Mario. When he wakes up, his eyes are now red like Mario’s, which shows he indeed have the black smoke.

Mario calling for Luigi’s disguise

As Luigi goes to the castle, he sees Mario and the Princess’ army guarding outside, so he enters by the underground. He goes up through their minions and Mario returns from the sky with the white smoke absorbed, making him have a wing-cap now. Luigi get in the third floor and notices Mario getting out of the hole to the sky course, he immediately takes disguise by covering himself with his black smoke, making Mario thing it was one more of his minions, so Mario orders it to go outside to have more guards and leaves the room.

As in the original game, there are portraits in the Endless Stairs hall, but now, it can be noticed that, as Luigi walks in the hall, the portraits now have images of Shadow Mario.

Mario goes to the castle entrance to meet the Princess, warn her of no sign of Luigi by then. The Princess sees he have wings now, making her realize he have found the white smoke and that there are doubles of them. The Princess tells him to share it, but Mario’s arrogance gets in the way with Mario asking if she was kidding and that he would share it if she stopped being useless, if she didn’t act like she was in charge and lying to him. Then he simply turns back and walks in the castle.

These attitudes of Mario with the Princess start to foreshadow that he would turn more evil from then on, and unmasking him to be the true one in the story who has truly to be stopped, although with the Princess being Princess Peach and making her the true ruler of the kingdom and the true one to be in charge, but Mario’s hanger for power was just making him more aggressive and not caring about nothing else.

Luigi, at the top of the castle, reads a sign with a message left by Toad, saying now that their plan of attacking them didn’t work, he had to kill Peach and Mario himself, but to kill Mario, he had to do something first, then he explains him the clues. Toad explains shadow smokes cannot kill each other if they are related by blood, which meant that, now that Mario and Luigi have the same shadow smokes, neither him or Mario could kill one another. So he leaves a key for him to use it in the fountain in the castle courtyard. he would take it to the fountain and be able to drain his blood by stepping in the water, after that, his power would be the only thing to keep him alive, making Luigi able to kill Mario. Luigi is able to go to the fountain once he enters in the underground hall at the same time Mario gets out of it, but when he is about to use it, the Princess rushes and catches him, allowing their pursuit to take them to the volcano in the Lava Land, where Luigi and the Princess fight, and allowing Luigi’s greater power to finally have her defeated and killed by making her sink into the lava. Her death makes her purple smoke leave her body, so Luigi absorbed one more shadow smoke.

Shadow Mario sad for the Princess’ demise

Luigi takes the fountain key, that has fallen in the haunted house, then he uses the power of the purple smoke to teleport back to the castle. But Luigi teleported in front of Mario next to the castle entrance, Mario already supposes something bad has happened to one of them, thinking it by seeing Luigi’s purple smoke, a boo appears in the room and tells Mario the Princess was dead. As Luigi goes to the fountain to drain his blood, Mario goes to the volcano where Luigi killed the Princess, grabbing his cap off his head and apologizing.

But when a small sign of victory was supposed to be seen, the chest the Princess has thrown into the lava while fighting Luigi gets noticed by Mario, it opens and the other half of the purple smoke gets out, going towards Mario standing in the other side.

The Fallen Shadows

The chest sank again into the lava and Mario has now the power of the purple smoke, and like Luigi, Mario has the sign of holding the smoke, which is the purple smudges in their wings on their caps.

Mario goes outside at the front of the castle to reunite his minions, but, when he was about to start his speech, a boo approaches and tells him about Toad’s message sign in the top of the endless stairs hall, Mario teleports to there and walks upstairs and check about the sign and, after reading it, he runs to the courtyard to presumably reach Luigi, but he gets through the blocked door and only sees the fountain with his already drained blood.

He goes back at in front of the entrance and starts his speech, scolding his minions for not noticing Luigi getting inside and saying he should kill them all for their failure, though he wouldn’t do it now to let them search and bring Luigi to him, for he wanted to kill Luigi himself.

Luigi appears behind Mario after his his speech with his army, he turns back at him and both attack each other again with smoke against smoke. Luigi, then fly into the castle with Mario behind, Mario is attacked by Luigi and he also attacks his, one another with their strong smokes. They get to fight one another again with smoke against smoke, and this time, causing a yellow flame smoke to appear between them as they keep pushing one another. They stop fighting and Mario starts to teleport himself with Luigi running at him to follow him to wherever he was about to go, and both vanish into the teleporting smoke. They teleport inside the pyramid, Luigi stands at the bottom as Mario attacks him with his black smoke from behind his back, throwing Luigi at the wall, he gets down to the floor Luigi is and runs at him, but Luigi dodges him. Luigi have escaped and now standing up in the other side, Luigi and Mario dodge their first smoke attacks against each other, but Mario couldn’t dodge Luigi’s second blow, Luigi’s white smoke hits him and knocks him down, then Luigi keeps throwing his smokes at him over and over several time. After attacked multiple times by Luigi, he gets up and looks like his eye has been a little damaged, he gives up and vanishes, leaving Luigi behind.

The real Mario speaks with Shadow Mario

Mario goes to castle second floor and enters in the mirror room, and as he walks forward, he reflects Mario’s original image in the mirror, as well his original personality. The real Mario from behind the mirror tries to convince Shadow Mario all he was doing and has done is meaningless and not to kill Luigi. For a while, Shadow Mario didn’t respond to Mario’s words, but he starts to manifest his denial at Mario’s requests, even with Mario begging him not to kill Luigi, but Shadow Mario truly doesn’t look at the real Mario inside him and going against Mario every time, making Mario in the mirror cry. But,then, with Mario’s final trial to make him let Luigi go, he, as predictable, denies again and throws his black fog against the mirror, breaking it.

Luigi, still at the pyramid, has built his own army, sharing his power with the Goombas around him, and explaining his plans as Mario’s Boo minion watches behind and goes to the castle warn him Luigi’s army will attack at sundown, then he goes outside and set his army ready, already at sundown. Mario looks up and sees Luigi’s army approaching, they get down to the ground and Luigi teleports after they all were set, and Mario even taunts Luigi saying he wasn’t prepared enough, and that one of his Goombas has lost himself on the way.

But it was a part of Luigi’s plans to try to outsmart Mario: the lost Goomba was charged to shorten Mario’s army; the Goomba, carrying a white Bob-Omb, lets it go upon Mario’s army causing it to explode, killing part of Mario’s army. Mario surely looked angry at Luigi’s strategy. Then he orders the attack and both armies starts fighting as Mario and Luigi fight one another, with smoke blows and punches throwing one far. Mario creates a violent tornado with his black smoke, sucking all their armies in, but Luigi stops him by letting a Bob-Omb be sucked in and exploding all their minions away, until making it last only Mario and Luigi to fight. They prepare their smoke power and confront each other again fighting smoke against smoke, but it seemed both couldn’t resist the power of one another, making Luigi fall in the grass and Mario fall into the lake. Luigi takes a red shell and disappears, while Mario gets out of the lake and looks for Luigi but doesn’t find him, and also fades away.

Luigi goes to Dire Dire Docks with the red shell and covers it with his power to let himself go inside the underwater sucking hole and reach for Toad’s body and extract his blue smoke from it.

Mario in the aquarium room tries to find out a way of getting inside the hole without dying, and even throws a black smoke against the wall in rage. He notices a hole up in the wall of the aquarium room and gets in, reaching the giant aquarium where Toad’s body was in. He is about to get the blue smoke out of Toad’s body when he notices the red shell fell down and brings Luigi with it, now both will fight for the blue smoke. The smoke starts floating above Toad’s body, Mario and Luigi run at it at the same time, one trying to reach it first, both jumped into the smoke at once, but the one who could catch it was Mario. Luigi sees Mario taking hold of the smoke and escapes out from the aquarium quickly.

Going deep to the sunken ship where the smokes were, he looks inside every of the four chests, supposing he would find another smoke, but Mario is his invisible smoke form appears in front of Luigi saying it was the only one and that it was too late now he had all the smokes. Luigi tries to fade away, but Mario throws his smoke preventing him from, Luigi calls his name, Mario, and he attacks Luigi, saying that Mario was dead and he would be as well in a few time. For asking Luigi for his last words, Luigi remembers of the smoke that jumps out of one of the chests, made to try to scare anyone away, he uses it to distract Mario and teleports away.

Thinking it was definitely the end for him, Luigi teleported to the castle’s roof, and there, he sees Daisy’s spirit, expecting her to be alive. Luigi asks why was she there and she says she could ask the same, Luigi explains he would leave because Mario now had all the four smokes and, for that, has become stronger and won. But Daisy tells him Mario has shared half of his black smoke with the Princess, he has killed the Princess and taken all of her power, and then Mario wasted more of his smoke with his army, that he has defeated. Daisy trusts Luigi and says the choice between running or fighting was his, and Luigi apologizes for her death, then she disappeared.

Shadow Mario’s defeat

Mario was standing in the courtyard when Luigi appeared behind him, he turns back at him, both run against one another and the final showdown begins. Luigi and Mario starts to fight one final time smoke against smoke, and, this time the fight lasted longer than the others. But, as Daisy has told Luigi, his power was greater than Mario’s, making the fog between the two become brighter in white, with this, Luigi push his white smoke stronger against Mario, and he fades to his normal form while flying as Mario’s black smoke disappears completely, and finally defeating Shadow Mario.

Mario, fell down slowly to the ground, and Luigi landed and stared at Mario laid on the floor. He gets closer to Mario to see if he was okay, when Mario’s wings disappears, then all the evil power of the smokes leaves Mario’s body, erasing Shadow Mario from existence. Luigi, still looking at him, sees a returned-to-normal Mario slowly opening his eyes, awaken again.

Powers and Abilities

Mario as default already has some superhuman abilities and powers by nature, like jumping higher, running faster, throw flames, flight and higher strength. But, as he gets hold of the shadow smokes in the story, hence some of his powers get better:

• Enhanced Powers: since Shadow Mario's birth, when he absorbs the first smoke, he gets some enhanced abilities of some that Mario already has, and also gets some that extra power Mario doesn't have, and one ability gets better as he absorbs another shadow smoke:
  • Floating and Flying: Although Mario has superhuman abilities, he can't fly by nature, and the power of the black smoke, like the other smokes to the other characters, gave him the power to fly.
  • Enhanced Intelligence: Shadow Mario, by turning evil, gets an enhanced mind to create smart strategies, such as: being able to catch the blue smoke faster than Luigi, get and alternative escape from the pyramid Luigi tried to keep him imprisoned in, outsmart his enemies to get after the other smokes and counterattack Luigi's white smoke to make it hit Toad.
