GIVE UP!
~ Shadow Meggy taunting Meggy.
No matter how much you run, you'll never escape yourself.
~ Shadow Meggy in the trailer for Sunset Paradise.
Tell him to leave. If he dies, it’ll be all your fault. Just. Like. Last time.
~ Shadow Meggy taunting Meggy about Desti’s death.

Shadow Meggy is a supporting antagonist in 2011 Australian adult-animated sitcom web series SMG4, and one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Francis) in its spin-off, Sunset Paradise.

She is the secondary antagonist of Season 11, serving as the main antagonist of the first quarter of the season and the Sunset Paradise Prelude, serving as the overarching antagonist of SMG4: Mario VS YouTubers and the main antagonist of SMG4: The Pursuit of Happiness.

She is a shadowy entity which serves as an evil counterpart to Meggy Spletzer, representing of all her negative thoughts, feelings, insecurities and trauma. Her ultimate goals are currently unknown, but judging from her current actions, it can be assumed that she wants to endlessly torment Meggy with her past failures and tragedies, with the implication that her ultimate goal is to make Meggy commit suicide.

She is voiced by Lizzie Freeman, who also voices her original counterpart, and Thrasir in Fire Emblem Heroes.

Appearance[]

As her name implies, she is a shadowy version of Meggy and is mostly monochromatic. In SMG4, she has purple lighting and glowing yellow eyes, while she has regular eyes in Sunset Paradise. However, they seem to glow yellow whenever she's fighting or whenever she's feeling very malicious. Her body glows a lot more in Sunset Paradise than in SMG4.

Under normal circumstances, only Meggy can see her due to being a manifestation of Meggy's self loathing and can only make "contact" with Meggy inside her head. As seen in SUNSET PARADISE - EP 3: Reservoir Cats, SUNSET PARADISE - EP 5: The Funk and the Furious, and SUNSET PARADISE - EP 7: What Comes Next., she can sometimes be seen replacing Meggy's reflection in the mirror (in Meggy's head).

Personality[]

Shadow Meggy represents Meggy's self loathing and insecurities. Therefore, she spends no expense at tormenting Meggy whenever she wants, such as ridiculing and shaming her for failing in life. She is also present where Meggy goes, which shows that she is also observant and watchful of what she does. Occasionally, she would end up making a good point as one of her methods of torment, but it seems that she mainly intends to make Meggy feel bad about herself. In SMG4: The Pursuit of Happiness, she tells Meggy to "give up", heavily implying that her ultimate goal is to drive her to commit suicide.

She seems to have a weakness: if Meggy doesn't care about what Shadow Meggy says (or insists that she'll listen to her friend's encouragement), she'll tremble in fear and leave, but this was mainly with the help of Auri, who was at the time facing his own insecurities (in the form of his grandfather).

History[]

SMG4[]

SMG4: Mario VS Youtubers[]

She first appears in the corner of Meggy's house in the form of a black void with yellow eyes. She approaches Meggy, who is disheartened over her being rejected as a trainer for Mario, only to be stopped by Bob Bobowski crashing in for a house party.

SMG4: The Pursuit of Happiness[]

Shadow Meggy initially appears as her void form at the start of the episode, where she observes Meggy complaining about her current lack of passion to her friends, before disappearing after they leave to try out new roles for her.

Later, Meggy goes back home distraught after her failure to get a job. Shadow Meggy takes this opportunity to teleport Meggy into a dark realm, where she reveals her true form. Meggy tries to fight her, but is easily defeated, as Shadow Meggy sadistically taunts her and tells her to give up. However, Meggy's friends knock at her door to give her a ticket to Port Aurora, scaring Shadow Meggy away.

My New Adventure[]

Shadow Meggy briefly appears in this teaser to Sunset Paradise, where she tells Meggy that she is deliberately abandoning her friends. However, after a flashback to Meggy getting onto the S.S. Tortle to leave for Port Aurora, with her friends telling her that they'll miss her, Meggy simply ignores Shadow Meggy, telling her that she has to find her calling.

Sunset Paradise[]

Pilot[]

Shadow Meggy initially appears in the opening of the pilot, where she fights Meggy Spletzer. Despite Meggy's best efforts, Shadow Meggy overpowers her, and drops her into the inky black void below. However, this is revealed to be nothing more than a nightmare.

SUNSET PARADISE - EP 3: Reservoir Cats[]

When Meggy & Auri suffers from the effects of the hallucinogenic gas, she appears again where she taunts Meggy on how she had left behind her friends because she didn't want them to interfere and how Auri wouldn't be able to help her. But Auri then told his hallucination (his deceased grandfather Aloysious Bori) that he has his "supervisor" to help him, which causes his and Meggy's hallucinations to appear to both of them at the same time. They simultaneously yell together that they don't care what they (Shadow Meggy and Auri's false grandfather) says, causing them to step back in fear, ending the hallucination.

SUNSET PARADISE - EP 5: The Funk and the Furious[]

Shadow Meggy appears again in a reflection from a TV screen where she taunts Meggy for unintentionally pushing Auri away and for not listening to his warnings about the Funky Fource, who are about to brainwash her with the TV.

SUNSET PARADISE - EP 7: What Happens Next[]

After Meggy harshly told Auri that he couldn't stop the crime boss because he isn't a real sheriff like his grandfather, Shadow Meggy reappears in the mirror where she tells her even though that she was born from a "bad concussion" Meggy had, she knows that Meggy messed up. She later reappears as Meggy tries to get Auri to run away from the Goonies who he was trying to fight off. She tells Meggy that if Auri dies, it would be her fault just like last time. Thankfully, Auri manages to pull through by fooling the Goonies with an egg-shaped marshmallow. Right before setting off to stop Benedict together, Meggy sees Shadow Meggy in another mirror. Meggy sternly stares at her for nearly messing up her friendship with Auri before ignoring her completely.

SUNSET PARADISE - EP 9: All Fall Down[]

Shadow Meggy echoes what she said to Meggy earlier about "all her fault" after you know what had happened.

SUNSET PARADISE - EP 10: Rebirth[]

Shadow Meggy appears in Meggy’s hallucination when she is fighting her when in reality is was Whisk who’s attacking her. Despite Shadow Meggy’s taunts, Meggy manages to gain her confidence & hatched the Phoenix Egg to revive Auri, making Shadow Meggy disappears as the fear gas goes away & the focus goes to Benedict. Shadow Meggy next appears when she asks if the vacation has changed anything in her life, & what she wants to do. Meggy exclaims that her purpose is to help people in need. With Meggy’s mind cleared & goal set out, Shadow Meggy disintegrates, possibly for good.

Trivia[]

  • Shadow Meggy seems to be based off of the Shadow Selves from the Persona franchise, which are entities who are formed from the repressed negative qualities of their human counterparts.
  • While not outright confirmed, it can be assumed that Shadow Meggy shouting at Meggy to "give up" is equivalent to a suicide dare.
  • It was rumored that Shadow Meggy was created as a result of Meggy sustaining a major concussion, but it is unknown.
  • Shadow Meggy and the Goonies are the only antagonists in the series who aren’t the main antagonist of at least one episode.
