Oi! Get off my f**king platform!
~ Sir Topham Hatt to Thomas, in Shed 17
Well, Mr. Hartley…you've been quite the thorn in our side…the wrench, in our works…the leaves on our rails. Never wanted to shy away from the media, were you, Mr. Hartley? Always another revelation about your faithful employer. Never a care for the trouble you've caused, the innovations you've hampered, initiatives you've stalled, the jobs you've lost…the challenges to this island's human supremacy. Well, we've got a very special place for you here. Somewhere you can't open your big mouth, or interfere any more. And don't worry, Mr. Hartley…you're among friends here. This is where everyone ends up once they've become...Troublesome.
~ Sir Topham Hatt to Keith Hartley in Project G-1

Sir Topham Hatt is the main antagonist of the 2015 YouTube video Shed 17 and the overarching antagonist of the 2018 sequel Project G-1. He is the greedy capitalist and controller of Sodor, who after buying a share of Sodor Research, changed the companies policy on ethics and began conducting experiments on anyone who could afford one.

He is voiced by Paul H who also voices the majority of other characters in both videos.

Personality[]

Owen Routh: Sir Topham Hatt. Born into money, he took his ridiculous name to heart and started wearing a top hat all the time. Of course, we "Islanders" had a different name for him.
Keith Hartley: Fat B-stard! You've never met such a cold-hearted c-nt as him. He banned all steam engine volunteers, cut most of the rail employees. Shut down the branchline and the similar stations. He was happy to let the railway rust away, just like he did to the mainline!
~ Dr. Owen Routh and Mr. Keith Hartley talking about and explaing why everyone in-universe hates Sir Topham Hatt by pointing out how much of a bad controller he is.

Despite only having a few lines in Shed 17 and Project G-1, Sir Topham Hatt is shown to be extremely rich and greedy, willing to do anything to make money off the bio-fusion engines, such as when he starting allowing them to work on the railways, despite the constantly accidents they were having. He's also shown to never want to take accountability for his actions, like when he began blaming others for Gordon's accident, when he was the one preventing people from putting out the fire. He also proves himself to be quite cowardly, as he went into hiding to avoid taking blame for what happened to Thomas, forcing Mr. Hartley to face most of the public backlash.

He's also shown to be extremely vengeful, condemning Mr. Hartley and many others to be bio-fused into trucks that cannot speak, solely for speaking out about about all of his horrible actions on Sodor. And while he is able to work with others, he sees people as merely assets to benefit himself, that he's willing to let take the blame for his actions, if it means he's able to get away with them.

Biography[]

While much of his past is not known, Sir Topham Hatt was mentioned to be born into money and took his name to heart, becoming a known figure to the public as a capitalist by wearing a top hat all the time as seen during one of the footages.

In the 1970's, Sodor Island was increasingly under the supervision of British Rail, who appointed Sir Hatt as the railway's new controller. He had received negative reactions from the islanders due to banning steam engine volunteers, firing most rail employees and shutting down the branch lines and smaller stations.

However, when Sir Topham Hatt heard about the Sodor Experiment, he staged a hostile take over of Sodor Research and bought a controlling share. As a result, work began on bio-fusion experiments. People who were able to afford it would be turned into locomotives and other vehicles, but most of these experiments ended up failing and getting either getting injured or killed.

In 1983, Sir Topham Hatt oversaw the testing of Gordon the Big Engine when his boiler exploded, injuring the nearby rail staff. Sir Topham Hatt prevented the rest of the staff from leaving, seeing them as responsible for the disaster. This only got worse when Harold the Helicopter crashed, killing him and the injured staff. Sir Topham Hatt then ordered everyone to clean up the mess to get rid of the evidence. However, the engine who helped with the cleanup, Henry Thierry, was accidentally diverted to Shed 17 and saw what was in it. When Henry confronted Sir Topham about the shed, they ended up having a massive argument.

The next day, Sir Topham Hatt sent Henry on the Flying Kipper route. However, the following week, Sir Topham sabotaged a switch by blocking it with a railway spike, causing Henry to crash into the back of a goods train, killing his driver and fireman. The following day, Topham sent Henry to Crewe where he was scrapped. Unfortunately, Henry had already told Thomas about Shed 17 and the tank engine went to investigate as soon as he heard about Henry's demise.

Shortly after Thomas discovered what was in Shed 17, causing him to burst out of his unstable body, and Biofusion was banned shortly after, Sir Topham Hatt went into hiding.

Years later, after Mr. Hartley is ripped in half by Thomas. Sir Topham Hatt had Owen Routh take Mr. Hartley from his hospital and bio-fuse him into a truck without the ability to speak. It's then revealed in a zoom out that he has done this many times before, presumably to other former employees that spoke out about his unethical experiments.
