NOTE: This article is only about the character played by the YouTuber Slogo, not the person in real life.
Slogo, also known as Slogoman or Josh, is one of the three villainous protagonists of the black comedy YouTube roleplay series Minecraft Squid Island. He plays with his friends, Jelly and Crainer on the survival multiplayer server and often trolls and manipulates them.
He is a loosely fictionalized version of, and portrayed by, the YouTuber of the same name.
Personality[]
On first impressions, Slogo comes off as calm, reserved and reasonable in comparison with his two friends. He is charming, sociable, innovative, hardworking and has a unique dry sense of humour.
Slogo is overall the most intelligent and organised of the three, and his deception works on Crainer like a charm. He never really succeeds at manipulating Jelly, though. He can also be noted for his architecture planning, skills at redstone engineering and his drive to constantly improve Bork Co. Upon closer inspection, however, the darker parts of his personality are revealed.
Slogo is actually antisocial, obsessed with coming out on top, manipulative and shows little to no empathy to both his friends and other residents of the server. Almost everything he does is to gain more power, prestige or riches. He also shows plenty of arrogance during the series, such as constantly comparing others' terms to his own in a negative manner.
Slogo often has a disturbing lack of empathy for his friends. For example, at the beginning of the series, he frames Crainer for vandalising Jelly's pyramid for his own amusement. As if that isn't enough, he also pushes Crainer onto the pyramid to make him pay diamonds, takes his chestplate away even though there was no need for it, and even frames Crainer again for dyeing the sheep the wrong colour.
When he is caught, he shows no regret whatsoever, only strained annoyance and does his best to avoid giving a genuine apology to Crainer. Another good example of his apathy is how he murdered Crainer's two dogs, Anton and Banton out of sheer boredom.
Slogo is a great example of the "Neutral Evil" archetype: following laws and regulations while they suit him and using them to abuse others, but dropping them immediately once they're no longer convenient to him.
For example, Slogo was the one most in favour of having strict roleplay in the server and often served as a killjoy to Crainer, however, once these laws were turned against him, Slogo "realised" that these laws were oppressive, and chose to become an anarchist. In general, Slogo just does whatever he feels like doing without regard for others.
One of Slogo's most noticeable qualities is that he will do anything to advance his goals without concern for morals or ethics. For example, when he built the extremely inhumane meat factory where animals were tortured to death for efficient meat, he claimed there isn't anything wrong with it because it's not technically illegal in the server.
It's debatable whether Slogo truly cares about his friends or just wants to rule over them. While he does semi-occasionally do nice things for them, it can either be interpreted as him showing off, trying to build rapport with them, or even as a way to placate his fans after a period where he's especially mean.
Even with some of his pets, he doesn't actually care for them. For example, Slogo nonchalantly declared that he never actually cared for his pet Bobby, and later left him buried alive casually without much thought. (He later claims that he feels sad about Bobby's death, but given what he said before, it can safely be assumed to be a lie.)
The only one of his pets that he truly cares about is Bork, to the point where he genuinely feared for Bork's life after Jelly threatened him. Despite not exercising him, Slogo does try to keep Bork happy and do whatever it takes to make him comfortable.
Slogo is also extremely hypocritical. For example, he calls Jelly an ex-dictator (which is true) but neglects to mention how he was also a dictator, a much worse one. Slogo abused his power in presidency countless times to give himself benefits, but when Jelly and Crainer did it to him he called it unfair.
Some more examples of his hypocrisy are how Slogo tells his audience and friends to leave the past behind (to make them forget his numerous crimes) but then brings up the past himself in a later episode. He also told his audience it was unwise to let anybody claim as much land as they wanted, even though it's perfectly legal for him to do that according to the law.
Slogo's lack of guilt is also noticeable. Along with the example above, he never shows any regret for his heinous actions as Mayor-Regent of Squid Island, nor all of his immense corruption as President of Squid Island. However, one example where he seems to genuinely feel sorry, was when he accidentally killed Jelly's pet Beenny while trying to save him. This is especially remarkable because Slogo actually wanted to save Beenny.
Slogo surprisingly states during the Grove Vs. Squid Island arc that he felt remorse for killing Anton and Banton, however, given that over a hundred episodes had passed from that moment to this and Slogo never showed any hangups about it or even acknowledged it before, it's safe to assume this was another tactic to get his fans to sympathise with him.
In fact, Slogo has openly lied to his fans before. He tells them that he believes a random squid he found was the real King Henward, however he later admits that he definitely wasn't and he just made that up, then claiming that Henward wasn't important to the revolution anyway.
Despite his intelligence, Slogo often shows very reckless behaviour, for example, continuously bullying Crainer until he gets caught, murdering Anton and Banton for no reason and making enemies of Jelly and Crainer right before one of them is to become President.
He was also quite corrupt while President of Squid Island, even assigning Crainer and Jelly tasks that only benefit Bork Co. rather than ones that benefit the whole island. In general, you should never trust Slogo with positions of power.
Slogo can also be noted for his sudden bouts of anger and the cruel and unusual punishments he gives out, such as the vile "laws" he creates on New Squid Island when in-charge or forcing Jelly to slave away for half a day as punishment for the vault incident.
With all of these telltale signs: superficial charm, lack of empathy or guilt, manipulativeness, reckless and irresponsible behaviour, disregard for social norms, poor relations with others, sudden bouts of strong anger, aggressive unwarranted retaliation, refusal to take accountability and blaming of others for everything, it is safe to say that Slogo (the fictionalized character, not the real person) is a mid-functioning sociopath.
Despite all of Slogo's negative qualities, it should be noted that he is still friends with Jelly and Crainer and often has an amiable relationship with them. Jelly and Crainer's hotheadedness and energetic behaviour means Slogo very often has to act as a mediator between them, being needed to restore peace. Some examples of this are the two gladiator matches he set up and the Turtle Island dispute. However, Slogo isn't always fair when it comes to mediation, as the lava tower sale incident shows.
Despite being a massive hypocrite due to not acknowledging his own flaws, Slogo does point out the wrongdoings of others accurately. For example, he's mad at Crainer for not showing ambition for his business after Slogo used underhanded tactics to get him his land back. He also points out Jelly's dictatorship is immoral, but this loses impact because of how awful his own dictatorship was.
During the Grove Vs. Squid Island arc, even through Slogo's motives for becoming an anarchist were extremely selfish, Slogo takes a surprising level of kindness in this arc, to the point where he may be considered the most moral of the three.
He shows sorrow for HUMPy's death, saves the resurrected Anton and Banton, wishes for the revolution against Squid Island to be civilised and he only wanted to blow up the walls, not the whole island. (However, there may be pragmatic reasons behind all of these, based on Slogo's past behaviour.)
The only bad things he really does during this arc are manipulating Jelly into forgiving him and Crainer for everything, his constant claiming throughout the arc that Jelly planned all of this to become a dictator, as well as refusing to understand that Jelly is simply roleplaying as President and being convinced there must be a conspiracy behind it.
