Squirtle, also nicknamed Ursula by the fanfic's authors, is the main antagonist of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon fanfiction PMD: Explorers of Death by star-byte and sparklingdemon. Originally one of the playable characters of the game, Squirtle went rogue when the player Myra refused to select her, resulting in the game's world being corrupted into a monochrome apocalypse, where Squirtle decided to take revenge on Myra's avatar.
Biography[]
The protagonist, Myra, buys a copy of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky from GameStop. Upon seeing Vulpix on the title screen, Myra wanted to play as Vulpix and answered the quiz, but got Squirtle instead (citing her as "the bold type"). In frustration, Myra tried to repeat the quiz to get Vulpix, but Squirtle was the result every time. She then decided to go online for reference so she could get Vulpix, but was presented with being "the bold type" once again, and then begins to emit static. Fortunately for her, she succeeded in choosing Vulpix (addressed a question mark to express doubt). She then chooses Shinx as her partner, nicknaming it Shadow after her Luxray in her copy of Pokémon Diamond.
As Myra gets ready to play the game, the screen goes pitch black and the text box shows a series of "..." before saying "She's arrived" before showing the entire world in complete monochrome, with Vulpix lying on the ground in a pool of red blood. Shadow the Shinx was also greyscale, and decided to kill Myra using his electricity. Myra was awed at the sudden dark tone, thinking of Pokémon taking things to the next level. However, Shadow chose not to kill Vulpix and took her to a cave to regain her energy. He asked for Vulpix's name, which would be Myra as the player Myra was naming Vulpix after herself. Suddenly, the screen faded to static as a silhouette appeared in the background. Shadow panicked, saying that "she heard". He tells Vulpix!Myra that his master is suspicious and that she needs to leave, or he won't hesitate to kill her.
Player!Myra saw that her Vulpix was at "NULL" rank and her only item was the chains around her neck. She then left to find a Substitute doll with a message saying "MYRA" in red letters, intimidating Player!Myra. She read the eerie messages left at the buildings by the other Pokémon, before finding a corrupted Bidoof pleading for Vulpix!Myra to "make things right" before proceeding to attack, but Myra killed it and released a bright light to her shock, theorizing the light to be its soul. Vulpix!Myra walked out only to see a message reading "RUN AWAY AND PAY" written in blood, before being chased by a corrupted version of Guild Master Wigglytuff with his lower half ripped out. Vulpix!Myra managed to escape from her pursuer before setting the guild tent on fire, presumably killing Wigglytuff too.
Myra goes into the dungeon, where Shadow tells her that her master was also at the beach and that she got away. He expresses his concern towards Myra and hopes that "she" doesn't get her. As Vulpix!Myra wanders through the dungeon, she is attacked by several discolored, monochrome Pokémon with blank white eyes and later blood all over them. She tries to fight all of them, with each one defeated "taking calamitous damage" and dying. Some of the Pokémon say horrifying things to Myra before they too are killed. After fighting through many Pokémon in the dungeon, she finally gets to Grovyle, who chides Myra for trying to change the future until she gets what she wants, and that he and his allies have failed. As he dies, he sarcastically calls Myra "hero" with a grin.

Myra finally meets the one behind all this: the Squirtle she had rejected in the selection screen, bloody and eyeless with a chain around her neck. She blamed Player!Myra for mutilating her like this and saying that she is the disgusting, ugly form her soul took. She goads Myra to kill her, but Shadow interrupts, coming to Myra's defense. Squirtle is shocked that Shadow would follow Myra despite what she did and assumes she's corrupting his thoughts, but Shadow rightfully calls Squirtle out. Afterward, the screen fills up with static, with Shadow trying to warn Myra but in vain. Squirtle approaches the screen mutilated and holding a knife on her tail, saying "I'm the one who's real, not you." before taking Myra to a glitched version of the character select screen meet the Unborn, all of the other starter Pokémon that one may choose, but greyscale, eyeless and also had chains around their necks.
The sixteen Unborn repeatedly chant "Welcome to the world of Pokémon!" as the portrait rapidly flashes between each other, and Squirtle leaves a message saying "Welcome to MY world." A boss fight happens where Vulpix!Myra has to fight all of them at once. She succeeds in killing Bulbasaur (saying that it was erased instead), and most of the others after a long struggle. Suddenly, Myra!Vulpix's body starts to feel heavy as she collapses. Player!Myra shakes her DS in anger that Vulpix was just going to die.
Shadow defends Myra and asks Squirtle why she's doing this, then the latter replies that she was originally going to be the hero until Player!Myra ruined everything, and is the reason why she's mutilated. Squirtle begins to cry, saying that the Vulpix is everything she's not and everything she wanted to be. But no matter how much Shadow tries to placate her (even calling her out for being responsible for the destruction of their world), Squirtle refuses to forgive Myra and threatens to kill Shadow too, but the Shinx says that he was never intended to be born until Myra showed up, and he felt a bond with her which he never shared with Squirtle. Shadow runs away and destroys the remaining Unborn to save Myra, and then proceeds to use Charge to free them both, but Squirtle slices him in half before he can do so. She then uses Guillotine on Vulpix!Myra, resulting in a game over followed by a taunt with "Just try, I dare you".
When reloading the game, Vulpix!Myra faces the screen and convinces Player!Myra to go back to the beginning, followed by an image of Squirtle and Vulpix adventuring together. Player!Myra starts another quiz, before being confronted with a threatening disclaimer at the start and a series of dark questions meant to chip at her psyche. She eventually gets Squirtle, and tries to choose Shadow but fails as he had been killed, so she decides to choose Vulpix again and names her Myra. The game starts regularly at first, with Squirtle lying on a regular-looking beach. Myra attempts to kill Squirtle, using the same mantra, but Squirtle stabs a knife into her head before walking away. The screen fades with Squirtle saying "You should have just accepted who you are." The title screen then shows Squirtle alone, full of blood and sporting an evil grin with red eyes.
In desperation, Player!Myra boots up the game one more time, horrified that Vulpix could be dead forever. The game immediately decides to pick Squirtle without her icon. She attempts to choose Vulpix again, only to be monochrome as well and having the knife through her head. Squirtle says that Vulpix!Myra will never be her partner, nor hero, and that she is just a mask she uses to hide herself with. Finally, she says that Myra is not her, Squirtle is. As she stares directly at the player with a huge grin, Player!Myra shuts the game off in fear and decides never to play the cartridge again, as Squirtle will win no matter what. Later on, she bought Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, this time answering honestly to see how much she's grown as a person. Perhaps coincidentally, she eventually got Squirtle again, quipping that some people never change.

- Squirtle was given the nickname "Ursula" by the fanfic's authors, named after Ursula from The Little Mermaid, also citing the ironic fact that Ursula stole Ariel's voice and identity while this Ursula had her entire life stolen. However, the name Ursula is non-canon to the story since in the canon Squirtle was never given a name due to the player resetting the game beforehand, and wanted to take on the name Myra due to feeling like she deserved the name more than Vulpix.
- The text box that appears upon getting Vulpix said "And you aren't fazed by doing things that most others would think twice before doing. Perhaps you don't even notice when others are upset with you! You know, you have the potential to be a truly great person...because you'll be the last one standing!" This foreshadows the game's contempt towards Myra and Squirtle's later fallen nature.
