The Darkness are the central antagonists of the Steve Cinematic Universe. They serve as the central antagonists of Rainbow Quest, unseen antagonists in Season 2 of Steve Legends and posthumous antagonists in Twisted Rainbow.
In Rainbow Quest, they serve as the central antagonists of Season 1, major antagonists in Season 2, the secondary antagonists of Season 3, posthumous antagonists in Seasons 4, 5 and 7, and the posthumous overarching antagonists of Season 6.
They are a parasitic, malevolent force of evil energy hellbent on infecting the Steves and dominating the world, appearing as the physical manifestations of the Steves' negative emotions, being manipulated by their creator, Void Steve into assisting him in his goal of achieving world peace, slowly becoming corrupted by Void's ideology and creating their own.
The Darkness was formerly sealed away by the Hero, Rainbow Steve, before being released years later from their prison by FavreMySabre. A deadly, infectious and powerful dark species, the Darkness' overarching goal are to corrupt everything in sight, infect anyone that they comes across and eliminate everything in existence until there is nothing left. Although the Darkness was able to decimate nearly the entirety of the Steves' world, they were put to a stop by Sabre, who killed Void Steve, resulting in the Darkness slowly fading from existence.
Although the physical beings of Darkness were gone, their essence was utilized months after their defeat to ensure the world's protection against their original enemies; the Demon Steves.
Personalities[]
The Darkness is a supernatural hive mind that believe in uniting others together to form one sole rule where evil is nonexistent. The Darkness at their core are fanatics, willing to push their agenda and philosophy onto others without permission and without thought for what their victims feel. They have ruined hundreds of innocent lives all in the name of good, despite being the ones who have put the world in peril more times than the Demon Steves, ironically, who they were created to fight against, becoming consumed with the obsession of wrapping their grip around the world and making it a place of peace. The Darkness' very motto is a chaotic description of how they aim to make the world a better place and spread peace by consuming every Steve in existence until there are no more left, so that the Darkness can be the sole species remaining on earth where no evil can occur under their rule.
However, as their reign progressed, the Darkness began to see the world itself as a problem that needed to be removed, which soon developed into wanting to rid existence of itself, as for them being alive, breathing, living and existing in general was painful for them, although it's unknown if they mean this in a literal or metaphorical sense, or even both, but given the Darkness' disdain for the state of the world and their desire to infect all the Steves, it's likely that they frown upon the pain that the Steves inflict on one another and see engulfing them in Darkness as the only logical solution to stop the pain. For the Darkness, fighting for power and keeping the world's energy in tact is a problem, as without power and energy there will be no more cause for pain and existence. The Darkness are so far gone that they don't even believe in Void Steve's motivations, as to them, peace is not an idea that when built up, will always fall back down and is never everlasting, thus, ending all of existence is the most rational thing they can think of doing to solve the problems plaguing the universe.
Although they are clearly capable of developing their own personalities and forming their own ideologies, the Darkness primarily acts as a feral, almost animalistic force of nature that targets what it sees and follows orders without hesitation, behaving like a pact of ferocious, bloodthirsty, homicidal, psychotic animals that only crave to infect or kill whoever just so happens to be in their line of sight. Even their first encounters with Sabre after years of forced confinement were mainly based around chasing him and destroying everything that came into view. Notwithstanding the fact that the Darkness are capable of forming their own emotions (as they are the physical embodiment of negative emotions), the Darkness aren't truly capable of exploring how the Steves feel and have no empathy towards their victims, only caring about their goals and selfish intentions without care for the ones they hurt. If anything, the Darkness are borderline arrogant and narcissistic for attempting to push their selfish views onto others, putting thousands of people through endless pain and still viewing themselves as noble.
The Darkness are a hive mind that embodies delusional, self-righteous chaos and use their goals as an excuse to hurt others, and even go as far as to use psychological torture to manipulate people into giving up hope and falling into the Darkness. The Orange Leader commented on the Darkness' hive mind mentality, stating that being infected by them allows for their voices to swarm their victims' minds, often resulting in their minds cracking and allowing for the insanity that is the Darkness to prevail in dominating their minds.
Despite how utterly vile, wicked and monstrous the Darkness were, the Darkness was created by Void Steve to combat the threat of the devilish Demon Steves, originating as the physical manifestations of the Steves' negative emotions and subsequently being brought to life. Despite their origins, it can be presumed that the Darkness were perhaps neutral entities who only wanted to live their lives before falling victim to Void Steve's manipulation.
Biography[]
Background[]
The Darkness were created during the age of the first Hero, Void Steve in order to protect the Steves from the wrath of the Demon Steves. When Void decided that creating an unstoppable force was the only way to defeat his the Demon Steves, he began manipulating the Steves into accepting their darkest emotions, such as fear, anxiety, depression and rage. With the Steves accepting their dark emotions and letting them flow through them, their emotions began to physically manifest in the forms of dark, black figures with the ability to spread their influence due to being the incarnation of other peoples' influence. Although the beings didn't pose a threat, Void wasn't contempt with just manipulating the Steves, and started to manipulate the dark beings into joining him in his crusade against the Demon Steves, and seeing that there was no where else for them to go, the beings joined Void Steve in his quest for peace. With their rampage set in stone, the beings were feared upon by the Steves, eventually coining "the Darkness" as the name for the species.
Fortunately they were defeated by the second Rainbow Steve and sealed away in a temple for years before being accidentally unleashed by Sabre years later when he came to the temple and read the prophecy. After escaping parts of the Darkness were absorbed by Nightmare Steve.
The Spread[]
After escaping their prison, the Darkness' first victim is a Red Steve who befriended Sabre when he entered the world. It's likely the Darkness infected Red Steve during their escape and went unnoticed. Red Steve begins to act strangely until the Darkness starts to consume him, forcing Orange Steve to destroy him to prevent the spread. Much later, Sabre and Orange Steve come to the Orange Village for the second time, seeing it being burned and destroyed with its citizens being corrupted and overtaken by the Darkness. Sabre and Orange Steve go through the village to get to the center of it to safety as the infected Orange Steves surround them. Fortunately they are teleported away and Orange Steve later cures them with his abilities.
Later on, Sabre and Orange Steve are alerted to Yellow Steve's location and find him surrounded by Darkness. The three begin to retreat into the forest as the Darkness gives chase. The trio manage to arrive at Yellow Steve's hidden bunker before the Darkness can come inside, holding them off for a while. The Darkness manage to break in and begin searching for them, but they are able to escape safely without alerting the Darkness of their presence by locking them inside of the bunker.
While patrolling, Sabre and Orange Steve find a giant Darkness Beast in the distance before turning towards the two and following them to a Yellow Kingdom. The kingdom begins firing at the Darkness Beast as the it begins shooting fireballs at the kingdom. Before the Darkness Beast can get inside the kingdom, the kingdom's shield is put up, but the Darkness Beast climbs on top of the shield. Fortunately, Sabre, Orange Steve and the rest of the kingdom evacuate as the shield falls apart and the Darkness Beast continues its destruction. After laying siege to the kingdom, other parts of the Darkness show up and begin swarming the kingdom, having completely taken it over. Sabre and Orange Steve manage to get past the Darkness and rescue Yellow Steve, who wasn't fast enough to evacuate in time and remained trapped inside the kingdom. The trio manage to escape, going unnoticed by the Darkness.
Joining forces with Nightmare Steve[]
After a part of the Darkness possesses a Yellow Steve and becomes Dark Steve, he leads the Darkness to destroy the most powerful Yellow Kingdom. The Darkness breaks through the entrance as everyone evacuates except for Sabre, Orange Steve and Yellow Steve. As Dark Steve prepares to kill them, Orange Steve uses his powers to teleport the army away.
Back at the Orange Kingdom, Nightmare Steve is accompanied by Dark Steve and a part of the Darkness as they wait for Sabre to arrive and use Orange Steves as hostages. The Darkness stands beside Nightmare Steve and Dark Steve, but is forced to leave alongside the latter when Sabre asks to be left alone with Nightmare Steve.
A Darkness Beast reappears at the Green Steve Kingdom in the water and slowly emerges, coming closer and closer to the entrance before being stopped by Orange Steve's force field. However, he isn't able to keep it up for long and the Darkness Beast comes closer. The Green Steve leader uses the green crystal to teleport the Darkness Beast away.
When Light Steve informs his group on where Nightmare Steve is, they discover him being surrounded by the Darkness as they swarm him while Nightmare Steve begins to lose his mind and succumb to their power. Fortunately he is saved by Light Steve who annihilates the Darkness and Sabre offers to turn him back into a Yellow Steve to prevent the Darkness from spreading.
Continued Spread[]
Following Nightmare Steve's death, the Orange Village were able to subdue and capture a Darkness Beast, keeping it imprisoned in a special giant containment box. However, its imprisonment is short-lived, as Faceless destroyed the containment box and allows the beast to walk free.
The Darkness later appears in the Middle World out of the depths of the Void to chase Sabre, Light and Indigo Steve as they discuss how Nightmare Steve survived. Although the Darkness manages to infect part of the Middle World, Sabre and Light Steve are teleported at the last second by Indigo Steve to the Void in order to destroy the source of the Darkness resulting in the leak to the Middle World. After travelling to the Void, Sabre's crew are surrounded by the Darkness and encased in a bedrock prison as they're transported to Nightmare Steve's lair.
Later on, the Darkness is reported by several Yellow Steves as they bring the situation to Sabre's attention. forcing him to travel into the forest and locate the Darkness' whereabouts. Sabre and Rainbow Steve are able to find the Darkness in the forest halfway through constructing a large portal that'll connect the overworld to the Void. Sabre and Rainbow Steve leave to report it to the Orange Village, but when they come back they find Reverse Steve overseeing the Darkness finishing construction on the portal as Sabre and Rainbow Steve sabotage it before the Darkness activate the portal. Unfortunately for them, the portal was sabotaged by Sabre and Rainbow Steve, who ambush the group before Rainbow Steve destroys the Darkness to confront Reverse Steve. However, Reverse Steve sacrifices himself to activate the portal, letting a Darkness Beast walk through. Fortunately, the Darkness Beast is stopped by Galaxy Steve, who effortlessly obliterates the monster within seconds. However, as soon as it's destroyed, several other Darkness begin to emerge from the portal to attack the group, but Galaxy Steve teleports them away at the last second.
After learning about Galaxy Steve's past from Indigo Steve, the Darkness returns to the Middle World more powerful than before and begins to chase Sabre, Rainbow and Indigo Steve whilst rapidly spreading. Before they can catch Sabre and Rainbow Steve, Indigo Steve teleports them away, thwarting the Darkness' attempts at infecting them. Unfortunately for Indigo Steve, the Darkness is able to infect him and begins to take control of the Middle World. Later on, Sabre and Rainbow Steve find that more of the Darkness have emerged from the giant portal and are now guarding it, forcing Sabre and Rainbow Steve to summon Galaxy Steve to assist them. Although their efforts are hasty at first (with Galaxy Steve rushing into battle and instantly getting attacked by the Darkness), Rainbow Steve distracts the Darkness and leads them away from the portal while Galaxy Steve immobilizes them, buying him, Rainbow Steve and Sabre enough time to escape into the portal and teleport to the Void to confront Nightmare Steve.
After defeating Nightmare Steve, Sabre and Rainbow Steve return to the Middle World to find it completely taken over by the Darkness and discover the infected Indigo Steve. Rainbow Steve uses his connection to the overworld to teleport to the World Beyond. However, they are unable to escape the Darkness as they find that it has begun to take control of the World Beyond and infected a Blue Steve. Sabre and Rainbow Steve are able to find the Blue Steve that Rainbow Red had introduced them to prior to his corruption and inform him that he needs to leave. Blue Steve initially refuses to leave, not wanting to leave the other Blue Steve to become consumed by the Darkness, but he is pushed into a portal leading back to the overworld by Rainbow Steve just as the Darkness starts breaking into his house. Although they're able to escape, Sabre's gang comes face-to-face with the Darkness' leader, Void Steve, but are able to escape through the help of Time and Elemental Steve. All five of them arrive at the Rainbow Hub to find Gerald the Pig, only to find him being swarmed by the Darkness. Sabre's gang are able to hold off the Darkness long enough before they escape.
The Darkness later take over the Green Steve Kingdom as the siege is lead by Void Steve, they are able to infect the majority of the Green Steves, including the leader. The Darkness was also able to travel to the Violet Steve Kingdom and took control of most of the Violet Steves. Sabre and his crew were notified about the Violet Steves when a corrupted one stumbled into the Rainbow Hub and suddenly died. Before they left, one of the Green Steves they rescued began showing signs of infection, and although Sabre tried to calm him down, Elemental Steve took matters into his own hands and destroyed the Green Steve, prompting backlash from his allies. Sabre's crew were successful in getting the several Violet Steves, as well as their leader out of the Kingdom before they could be infected.
The Darkness is later found by Sabre, Time and Elemental Steve in a meadow surrounding Void Steve's lair, but are quickly dispatched. However, more Darkness is found on the inside of the lair when the group first enter, surrounding them, which alerts Void Steve of their presence. They escort Sabre, Time and Elemental Steve to the cells but they end up getting killed after Sabre uses his newfound power to break blocks to escape and kill them, taking Time and Elemental Steve with him.
A horde of several Darkness managed to lay siege to the Great Library, but were quickly dispatched by Sabre, Time and Elemental Steve. Later on, more Darkness is summoned by Rainbow Steve, who had since become corrupted by Void Steve, but were also quickly dispatched. The Darkness was later encountered by Sabre in the World Beyond, where it has continued to spread, but Sabre was once again able to defuse the situation and destroy them.
Later on, Sabre and Elemental Steve find Darkness surrounding Blue Steve, alongside a new breed; Mini Darkness. But they are quickly dispatched.
Achieving Near-Victory[]
The Darkness is eventually released into the Yellow Kingdom by the Yellow King, who had become infected. A horde of Darkness attacked Sabre and Elemental Steve, but were quickly dispatched. The Yellow King stepped from his ruined castle and began spouting out how he felt enlightened by the Darkness as Corruption and Soul Steve watched from the hill nearby. The Yellow King's guard charged at Sabre as the latter took him out. The Yellow King then prepared to attack Sabre before being frozen by Elemental Steve, rendering him powerless. The Yellow King was then teleported away by Elemental Steve to his pocket dimension.
This lead to the Darkness attacking the final kingdom, that of the Orange Steves. However, their siege was cut short by the Orange Leader, who fended them off, but resulted in him becoming infected. When Sabre and Elemental Steve arrived they uncovered the damage and found the Orange Leader, who was struggling to hold on to his sanity as he stated the same deluded ideals that had been shared by the Yellow King. Elemental Steve was then able to send the Orange Leader to his pocket dimension, as the leader didn't put up a fight and accepted, thanking Sabre before being transported away. As soon as the Orange Leader was sent away, a swarm of Darkness were summoned by Corruption Steve who watched as they attacked the remaining Orange Steves. They were fended off by Sabre and Elemental Steve, who attempted to attack Corruption Steve, but he vanished before the two could do anything.
The Darkness is eventually put on patrol around the temple where they were first released. Two Darkness were spotted by Sabre and Elemental Steve outside the temple, forcing Sabre to lure them away for him and Elemental Steve to get the jump on them and kill them before confronting their leader.
Final Stand and Defeat[]
After Void Steve becomes Rainbow Void and murders Funny Orange Steve in front of Sabre, his anger overwhelms him and puts his body on autopilot, allowing the Darkness to control his body and use him to murder several Steves. As well as committing acts of murder, the Darkness and Sabre attacked the Great Library, destroying it and forcing the Great Librarian into the Spirit World. Sabre was soon able to get his body back, but at the cost of being gone for a few months.
At last, Rainbow Void gathered enough Darkness to form an army to attack the newly formed Rainbow Kingdom, and letting Sabre, Soul and Corruption Steve lead the charge. Sabre found the Darkness gathered outside the kingdom and spotted Light Steve, who saw Sabre with the Darkness and believed he was on their side. Corruption and Soul Steve took this as the time to siege and commenced forth. However, all of the conflict had built up anger within Sabre and he unleashed the power of the Shadow Sword, decimating the army of Darkness in a matter of seconds, causing Soul and Corruption Steve to retreat. After the Darkness' defeat, more Darkness rally at the lair where they're ambushed by Sabre, Light Steve and some colorless guards, who take them down easily. However, Corruption Steve reveals himself and conjures a fleet of Darkness to attack them, but they were also quickly defeated.
However, after a long, painful struggle and final fight, Sabre was able to kill Void Steve. As the Darkness' creator and hive mind, Void Steve's death initiated the deaths of the entirety of the Darkness, as they quickly began to vanish from existence, only leaving those infected. However, when Rainbow Void was killed, he dropped the Rainbow Crystal, a fusion of all the crystals he had absorbed. Using the Rainbow Crystal, Sabre was able to de-infect many Steves who had been corrupted during Void Steve's reign, such as the Yellow King and Orange Leader.
After so many years of suffering, the Darkness was finally gone for good.
Return[]
Although the Darkness had been destroyed, Sabre eventually unearthed the Shadow Sword, the only piece of Darkness remaining, and used it to stop the Demon Steves from entering the Rainbow Kingdom, as their purpose was to protect the Steves from them.
The Darkness managed to manifest as entities themselves when Sabre used them to telepathically fight against a hoard of Demon Steves that were attacking several different kingdoms, and successfully destroyed the Demon Steves, although it took some time to get the Darkness to recede.
