What is true to you? Or you? Who ran away? I am the only sane man here.
~ Jacques to Fritz Ludwig and Jane Doe, and his famous quote.
This unbridled act of cruelty against our own company will not go unpunished! So, in Archibald's death, and in accordance to his will, I will be taking his place as Chairman of the Board to end this treason and corruption once and for all!
~ Jacques attempts to take over the Jules Archibald Foundation, right before his death.

Detective Jacques Murnau, also known as Corporal Detective Mannix E., and later The Smoker, is the main antagonist of the 2023 YouTube psychological horror movie Emesis Blue.

He was a BLU Spy, a private detective and the right-hand man of Jules Archibald. Murnau, along with his personal assistant Jane Doe, were on a mission to investigate Archibald's disappearance in Mortem, New Mexico, and find and rescue him from his kidnappers.

Although initially introduced as the film's tritagonist, Murnau's true self and motives slowly begin to reveal itself during the course of the rescue mission at Conagher Slaughterhouse. It wasn't until after accidentally burning himself horribly, disfiguring him, and finding out about the truth behind his boss's kidnapping that he was driven into insanity, becoming the maniacal villain referred in the movie's screenplay as "The Smoker".

He is voiced by Chad Payne, who also voiced The Hunter.

Biography[]

Before Emesis Blue[]

JA4

Jacques and Archibald preparing to execute three BLU mercenaries.

Jacques Murnau was created as a clone from the Respawn Machine and at one point was promoted to become Jules Archibald's right-hand man.

At an unknown point before the events of Emesis Blue, Murnau was brought by Jules Archibald to Dustbowl to attend an execution of three BLU mercenaries: a BLU Heavy, a BLU Sniper and a BLU Scout. While Archibald aims a revolver at the mercenaries, he would then remember that Murnau wanted a promotion and decides to hand the gun to him. Murnau questions what the three mercenaries have done and Archibald answers that they committed treason, though the reason was never stated.

Initially, Murnau hesitates to shoot as he aims his revolver at Heavy. Archibald then tells Murnau what it would take to execute the traitors before Murnau answers by asking for a new car, shooting the Heavy dead in the head. Murnau then moves his revolver to aim at the Sniper, asking for a new personal assistant before executing him. Finally, Murnau aims his gun at Scout, though hesitates as he thinks of one last reward. Archibald brings up about taking a vacation as a final reward. Murnau smirks, accepting the deal before executing the Scout.

Graveyard Shift[]

Jacques VS Stalingrad

Jacques fighting Stalingrad in the alleyway.

Murnau and Soldier receive a mission to investigate the disappearance of Jules Archibald down in Mortem, New Mexico. Their lead was a former BLU Heavy, whom they tracked in an alleyway.

While Soldier experiences a hallucination, Murnau opens the car door before questioning what Soldier was doing with his revolver. Murnau then takes the revolver out of Soldier's hand "before you hurt yourself". Soldier responds by stating that he told him to keep a lookout before Murnau responds that he told him to wait in the car. Soldier then brings up the possibility of an ambush but Murnau responds that the Heavy is alone. Although the Soldier retorts about how large Heavy was, Murnau tells him that he just needs to get him to talk. Soldier retorts that the Heavy may not talk before Murnau orders him to keep a lookout on the police, closing the car door and leaving.

Murnau reappears behind Stalingrad via his invis watch, aiming his revolver at the Heavy. While Stalingrad states that he's BLU, Murnau tells the Heavy about him wearing a different suit and who his new employer was. Stalingrad responds about not understanding about Murnau's questions before he pulls the gun's hammer to question Stalingrad if he kidnapped Archibald. Murnau then reminds Stalingrad about the price for betraying BLU and its consequences before asking what was in the briefcase Stalingrad was holding. Stalingrad doesn't answer and Murnau asks him to hand it over. Stalingrad would retaliate by swinging the briefcase at Murnau, slamming him towards a nearby dumpster. The Heavy then lifts up the fallen Murnau before throwing him into a pile of trash bins.

Spy angry at Soldier

Jacques gets mad at Soldier for killing Stalingrad, their only lead.

Murnau stands back up before grabbing an empty glass of beer and throwing it at Stalingrad's face, though only the Heavy's hat fell off. As the Heavy approaches Murnau, he throws another glass at the Heavy. The Heavy dodges before swings his fists towards Murnau. Eventually, Stalingrad grabs Murnau by the throat, smashing the back of his head against the dumpster. Murnau was free from Stalingrad's grasp as the Soldier, who heard the slamming outside the alleyway, shot the Heavy in the heart, killing him. Although Soldier saved him, Murnau angrily retorts at Soldier for killing their only lead. Murnau sighs before stating that they now have to leave the alleyway. He then orders Soldier to get the camera from the car.

After Soldier leaves to the car, Murnau gets a hold of the briefcase. He tries to open it up before looking up to notice a black hearse by one of the alleyway's entrances. Suddenly, Murnau gets hit by the butt of another revolver, causing him to collapse on the floor again. A dark figure dressed in a plague doctor mask aims his revolver at the side of Murnau's head, slowly pulling the trigger. However, just before he could fire, the figure suddenly runs away back to the hearse. Soldier then returns back to Murnau with the camera, asking what had just happened. Murnau responds by saying that someone took the briefcase. Just before the hearse could drive off, Soldier takes out his camera and snaps a photo of it.

Dinner's Ready![]

Spy Driving

Jacques and Soldier listen in to the radio.

Murnau and Soldier return back to the car, speeding off through the streets of Mortem. Soldier looks at the photo he took and states that whoever took the briefcase was likely an Undertaker. Murnau questions what could be in the briefcase. Soldier brings up that the briefcase may have "money, gold, diamonds" but Murnau replies that it likely doesn't contain money. Soldier then brings up that it could be a bomb before Murnau states that Stalingrad would've used it against him. Finally, Soldier jokes that it could contain Archibald's severed head before Murnau shuts him up, stating that "they'll have all our heads".

Murnau notices Soldier using the radio, telling him that it only receives messages and doesn't transmit them. Murnau initially looks back on the road as he listens to Soldier use the radio, disguising himself as a policeman under "185", to order "187" to tail a black hearse, only to jerk his head back at the radio once 187 responded. Listening to the policeman tail the hearse, Murnau tries to tell Soldier what he was doing before Soldier shushes him. After hearing the policeman get strangled by the hearse's operator, Murnau asks Soldier what was the street the policeman was on. After Soldier tells that they were on Purgatory Avenue, Murnau jerks on the breaks before making an abrupt U-turn, speeding towards the street.

Intel Hell[]

Spy and Police

Jacques arguing with the police at the crime scene.

Murnau and Soldier infiltrate the crime scene at Jeremy's house under the guises of FBI agents "Mannix" and "Columbo" respectively. Murnau takes a photo of the "M" on one of the walls before turning around to take a photo of the dining room. Then the police chief orders to get "these clowns" out of the crime scene before Murnau restates that they were FBI agents "Detective Mannix" and "Agent Columbo" and that they were "looking for a very dangerous criminal". The chief then asks for a background check on them, not buying into their claims.

Murnau kneels down to talk to an injured officer, asking what happened. The officer responds by saying that the perpetrator "had to be on drugs"- that he tried to apprehend him but couldn't. Murnau then asks how the perpetrator escaped and what he was driving. The chief stops Murnau and tells him that he answered enough questions before the officer answers that he was driving an ambulence. He kneels back up to take a hold of the hacksaw that killed Jeremy's mother. Presenting the hacksaw, he tells the Soldier to get back in the car.

Spy It's a model

"It's a model, you idiot."

After leaving the crime scene, Murnau and Soldier arrive at the Chief Medical Advisor of BLU's office. With Soldier kicking down the door, the two walk inside. Murnau turns on his flashlight before aiming his gun in the office's darkness. He then orders Soldier to check the bathroom. Afterwards, he picks up a photo of Jeremy sleeping from the desk. Then, he aims his flashlight towards text over the office's entrance that was written in blood, reading "CONAGHER SLAUGHTERHOUSE". Murnau would then return back to Soldier who got scared by a skeletal model, claiming it to be his latest victim, before Murnau tells him that it's just a model.

Murnau picks up one of the capsule bottles before throwing it back on the desk, stating that "this is worse than I thought". Soldier picks up one of the Valium pills and talks about how he used to take "a bunch" of them, stating that he was "seeing things". Murnau questions whether the pills worked but Soldier answers that he actually never took any of them. The telephone suddenly rings amidst the conversation. As Soldier reaches his hand to pick up the telephone, Murnau quickly tells him not to pick it up until it was too late. Listening to the phone call, Murnau tells Soldier that it was Fritz Ludwig himself calling. Murnau could only listen to Soldier's threat to Fritz before slamming the telephone back into the holder.

Spy arrives

Jacques arrives at Conagher Slaughterhouse

Driving off-road, Murnau and Soldier arrive at Conagher Slaughterhouse and park their car at the outside entrance. Getting out of the car, Murnau orders Soldier to check the ambulance before walking towards the now collapsed bridge way. Murnau takes out his own portable phone in an attempt to call for backup, only for Soldier to interrupt to take out his rocket launcher. Murnau looks down at the trunk, asking Soldier about the fact that he had his rocket launcher in there the whole time before Soldier responds that he uses it for emergencies.

Murnau then asks what the Soldier was planning to do with it before Soldier answers that he'll rocket jump over the bridge way ravine. Murnau retorts with Soldier telling him that he's done it before. Then, Murnau slaps the rocket launcher off of Soldier's hands, hasty that he'd get the both of them killed. The rocket launcher accidentally fires a rocket in the direction of their car, causing it to explode. Suddenly, a bullet was fired at Murnau, missing him, before Soldier runs over to tackle Murnau into the ravine.

Crossroads[]

Spy threatens Soldier

Jacques threatens Soldier to leave.

The duo walk through the slaughterhouse's sewer entrance, stepping through the sewage water below them. Disgusted, Murnau speaks about how they wouldn't be able to find Archibald "in this excrement". Soldier brings up a wartime story- that during the war, they had to clean dugouts for weeks "with water up to your ankles" and that the dugouts were only built six feet wide while extending for miles. Annoyed, Murnau retorts as he and Soldier continued to step through the waters.

Murnau tries to activate his invis watch, only for it to malfunction. He then looks back up to Soldier, telling him that he has no idea what he'll get into. Soldier responds back, stating that he does. Murnau states that they should have called for backup, only for Soldier to retort by stating that he saved Murnau from a bullet. Murnau retorts back by bringing up how Soldier notified Fritz that they were coming, got the police involved in their mission and killed their only lead, ending by telling Soldier that he compromised the whole operation. Soldier brings up about the pictures before Murnau retorts by stating that they were in the destroyed car. Blaming it on Soldier, Murnau calls him off for being a "stupid bastard" and an "amateur". He then aims his revolver at Soldier, ordering him to leave. Soldier questions why Murnau was aiming his gun at him before Murnau states that he's done having Soldier with him. Soldier then questions whether Murnau had killed his own comrades. Murnau then orders Soldier again to leave before Soldier questions if Archibald taught him to execute his own comrades.

Then, Murnau and Soldier would hear the sound of a sniper rifle loading itself up in the distance. Soldier takes a moment to look at who was shooting, only for a silhouette of a Sniper to fire another round. Settling his differences aside, Murnau drags Soldier away from the firing area. Murnau tries to activate his invis watch once more, only for it to short circuit again. Soldier formulates a plan to retake his rocket launcher on the other side. Murnau watches Soldier yell at the Sniper before getting struck in the chest from another shot. Soldier fakes his death before grabbing onto his rocket launcher and firing a rocket at the Sniper. Murnau questions how Soldier didn't think he'd be shot in the head before Soldier responds by stating that he didn't.

Spy and Soldier look down at Sniper

Jacques and Soldier look down at the Sniper.

Murnau and Soldier make their way towards the exit of the sewers, stepping up the stairs before looking down at the Sniper. Murnau aims his revolver down at the Sniper before Soldier grips his hand onto Murnau's gun, telling him to "let him bleed" before walking off. Murnau looks down at the Sniper as he contorts on the ground, noticing that he was undead. Then, he looks up to Soldier, noticing that he was now trapped in a Pyro's firing line. Seeing Soldier stand down, Murnau walks up the step of stairs before aiming his revolver at the Butcher, ordering them to stand down and take off his mask. The Butcher fires a shot at Murnau's leg, causing him to misfire and fall down the stairs.

Seeing Soldier run away, Murnau orders him to return and save him, only for Soldier to make it out of the Pyro's line of fire before the metal doors shut. Murnau holds his injured leg before trying to reach over to his revolver. Seeing the Butcher walk down the stairs towards him, Murnau picks up his revolver and aims it towards the Pyro, only for no shots to be fired. Murnau hears the Sniper chuckle, realizing that he emptied his revolver's barrel. The Butcher appears before Murnau and kicks him away, causing him to lose grip of his revolver. The Butcher grabs a hold of Murnaus neck to choke him before slamming his head against the floor, knocking him out.

Murnau appears in a flashback hallucination that Soldier experiences. In the hallucination, Murnau stands in between a trench, telling Soldier that there was nothing to be found here, before a Pyro fires their flamethrower at Murnau, killing him.

The Doorway[]

Jacques threatens Butcher

Jacques threatens the Butcher.

Murnau has a flashback to when he executed the three BLU mercenaries at Dustbowl with Archibald before reawakening to the Butcher throwing gasoline on the Spy's face. The Butcher then swipes Murnau's mask off him before aiming Murnau's revolver at his forehead. The Butcher then puts the revolver aside onto a box. As the Butcher picks up a hacksaw, Murnau threatens them that Builders League will destroy them for their crimes. Murnau then tells the Butcher that he's a protected man just as they then picked up an axe. The Butcher sets the axe's pole on Murnau's shoulder as he asks what they wanted before lifting it back up. Murnau looks up to the Butcher who now stood over him to take off their mask. There, Murnau witnessed the Pyro's contorted face, flicking off the Spy's lighter before turning it off in the darkness.

The Butcher eventually puts their mask back on, tormenting Murnau by flicking his lighter's cap on and off with a click each time. Suddenly, a telephone ring would interrupt the both of them. The Butcher gets up from their seat to pick up the phone, listening in to the Hunter's voice on the other end. Murnau takes the moment to try activating his invis watch again; his watch finally working to allow him to go invisible. Murnau then sneaks behind the annoyed Butcher and slams a can of gasoline against their head. Murnau grabs a hold of his revolver once more and aims it towards the Butcher. With his invisibility deactivated, he fires three shots against the Pyro's chest.

Spy on fire

Jacques accidentally lits himself on fire.

Assuming that the Butcher has been killed, Murnau lowers his gun and picks up his fedora and lighter. He puts it back on his head and busts the door to leave the room. Taking out the lighter, he lights up his cigarette before putting his lighter down. Afterwards, Murnau takes his cigarette out of his mouth before throwing it behind him. Unintentionally, the cigarette lands on the spilled gasoline below, causing it to ignite with fire. Murnau tries to flee the incoming fire, only for his leg injury to cause him to trip down on the floor. The fire catchs up to Murnau and burns through him. Murnau screams in pain, rolling himself away from the fire before falling into the nearby sewage water.

Off-screen, the burnt Murnau made his way towards the security room and notices Archibald in one of the cameras. There, he listened to Archibald reveal his true motives- that he infacted staged his kidnapping to avoid legal trial and that his true role in the Gravel War was to drag it as long as possible with the Respawn Machine and profit from it. Out of anger, he fires his revolver at the screen, causing it to go static.

JA14

Archibald's death.

After exiting the execution floor room, Archibald makes his way to the sewers, only to encounter a revolver-wielding figure in a familiar attire except this time all in black. Archibald yells who it was standing before him and the figure reveals himself to be Murnau. Archibald thanks Murnau for coming down to save him. Murnau, however, goes on about how he had to do Archibald's dirty work and hid it from everyone before retorting that it costed himself getting burnt because of it. Murnau tells Archibald that no one saved him either and calls him out for being selfish. Archibald begs for mercy, telling him that he gave him everything he ever wanted. Then, Murnau responds by aiming his revolver at Archibald, stating that he'll now give Archibald "exactly what you deserve" before firing a round at Archibald's forehead, ending the life of his boss. Afterwards, Murnau, or the Smoker as he's now called, turns around and walks away.

As Fritz and Soldier were distracted by the Emesis Pharmaceuticals commercial playing in the presentation room, Murnau appears behind Fritz and whips the butt of his revolver against his head, knocking him out.

Katabasis[]

Spy I am the only sane man here

"I am the only sane man here."

Fritz finds himself reawakened in the execution floor room with Soldier sitting on the other side of the table and Murnau standing in between them. Greeting Fritz, Murnau picks up the briefcase and sets it on the table. He then aims his revolver at Fritz, ordering him to open the briefcase. Fritz states that he couldn't only for Murnau to insist that he could. Fritz restates that he can't before Murnau calls him a liar. Soldier asks how Fritz got the briefcase to which Fritz answers that he stole it, only for Murnau to slap Fritz with his revolver and stating it to be untrue.

Soldier slams his fists on the table before asking where Archibald was. Murnau answers by telling Soldier that Archibald is dead. He further tells Soldier that Fritz is a liar but then lies by stating that Fritz killed both Archibald and Jeremy. Fritz responds by stating that to not be true. Murnau then questions Fritz about what is true to him before turning to Soldier, asking the same thing and blaming him for abandoning him. Afterwards, Murnau declares himself "the only sane man here". Soldier retorts by telling him that he took a bullet for him from the Hunter. Murnau, however, states that he should've killed Soldier back when.

Murnau takes out his revolver again, swinging the barrel before putting it on the table to spin it. Starting a game of Russian Roulette, he slides the revolver over to Soldier, telling him that he'll be the first to go. Soldier points the gun at his head before pulling the trigger, only for no shots to be fired. Passing it over to Murnau, he aims the gun towards his head as well, only for no round to be shot. Murnau then passes it over to Fritz, who aims the revolver below his chin. Murnau's revolver ultimately fires a round through Fritz's head, killing him instantly.

Spy you won

Jacques tells Soldier to leave.

With Fritz dead, Murnau says goodbye to him as he looks down at his corpse. Murnau then turns his head back to Soldier, telling him that he now "knows how it feels". Murnau then tells him that he won and can leave the room now. Just as Soldier was about to step out of the room, Murnau tells him to meet again at Archibald's funeral before using his invis watch to go invisible. Afterwards, Murnau leaves the room before closing the door behind Soldier, causing it to lock behind him and leaving his own personal assistant inside.

In the aftermath of the rescue mission, Murnau is seen hospitalized and laying in a hospital bed with a cigarette still in his mouth. Agent Simmons, after interrogating Soldier, tells him to cheer up and that Murnau will make it.

Blood Brothers[]

Spy meets Blutarch

Jacques greets Blutarch and his bodyguard.

Two days had passed since the investigation and Murnau now wears a mask equipped with a vocalizer. At Archibald's funeral at Lazarus Funerals chapel, Murnau meets up with Blutarch's bodyguard, giving him a handshake with the bodyguard giving his condolenses to Murnau for his loss. Blutarch Mann makes his way towards his bodyguard, to which Murnau greets him with a handshake. Blutarch asks about how Murnau knew about his friend Archibald with Murnau responding that he knew him "better than anyone". Murnau listens in on Blutarch, who talked about first meeting him in 1960 after the presidential election and how he went on about "how do we get rid of this son of a bitch?". With the bodyguard suggesting for Blutarch to take a seat, Murnau makes his way towards the podium, slapping the back of Soldier's shoulder who was now in a wheelchair.

Murnau interrupts Blutarch's argument with his brother, Redmond Mann, who eventually moved back to listen. Speaking at the podium, Murnau starts off by stating that everyone is here to honor the memory of Jules Archibald and that his loss has came as a shock to everyone. Murnau brings up of Jules having carried Builders League "for as long as I can remember" and that even after his death, Archibald's contributions will not be forgotten. Afterwards, Murnau stops with the accolades and reveals what happened with Archibald- that he was abducted from his home by "some kind of underground cult". Murnau further states that the rescue mission went wrong and that while he and Soldier escaped, Jules died. Finally, Murnau asks for Soldier to come up and explain what happened.

Spy carries Fritz photo

Jacques spreads his false narrative on Archibald's death.

However, as Soldier reads the script, he suddenly bursts out in laughter with the audience looking at him in confusion. Murnau suddenly pushes Soldier back, apologizing. Pushing the narrative he made up, Murnau reveals that Archibald was murdered by Fritz Ludwig, the Chief Medical Advisor of BLU, presenting a file photo of him. Murnau states that Fritz was a schizophrenic psychopath addicted to his own medicine and that he was obsessed with his own patients. Bringing up Jeremy's missing person photo, Murnau reveals that Jeremy had been missing since Halloween night. Then, he brings up a crime scene photo of the corpse of Jeremy's mother, revealing that she had been beheaded with a hacksaw.

Redmond speaks up, asking if this was necessary, with Murnau stating that he was proving that Fritz was capable of kidnap and murder. There, he questions to the audience how they let it all happen and stating that Archibald died because "we failed him". Blutarch on the other hand asks whether Murnau killed him. Murnau denies, stating that Fritz had killed himself. Afterwards, Murnau states that this "unbridled act of cruelty against our own company" will not be unpunished. Finally, Murnau announces that in accordance to Archibald's will, he will be taking his place as chairman of his foundation and as executive of BLU, to put and end to the treason and corruption that lead to all of it "once and for all". Just behind him, Soldier took out a grenade, as though about to kill Murnau and taking his own life with.

Fritz shoots Jacques twice

Fritz shoots Jacques's dead body a second time.

Suddenly, the casket opens and Fritz Ludwig emerges from it. Fritz aims a revolver at Murnau and fires a round into his head, killing him instantly. Soldier looks up in terror as the audience fled out of their seats and out of the chapel. Fritz then gets out of the casket before standing back up, firing another round at Murnau's dead body. After killing one of the bodyguards, Fritz looks at Soldier, Murnau's personal assistant, before deciding to spare him and walks on out of the chapel.

In the aftermath of the incident, newspapers were printed to read out the news. The article states that "a gunman emerged from inside the closed casket, shooting Detective Jacques Murnau in the head" and was declared dead at the scene.

Personality[]

In his introduction, Murnau comes off as a stern, professional but bitter mercenary with a tendency to be melodramatic. He acts as the man in charge while his personal assistant, Jane Doe, acts as his subordinate/sidekick. Due to his bitter traits however, he has shown to be rude to Soldier, often calling him an idiot for his supposed reckless behavior. He has also shown problems with hesitancy caused by his melodramatic traits, including being too demanding and impatient with Stalingrad in an attempt to get him to talk which lead to their altercation as well as aiming his gun at the Butcher in an attempt to get them to surrender, despite them wielding a loaded submachine gun.

In truth, Murnau is a corrupt, disloyal, self-centered and power-hungry narcissist who will do anything to get what he thinks he deserves or wants. He does not care about Jane Doe neither as a friend nor assistant and was willing to kill him for supposedly compromising their mission. Even after being saved three times by Soldier, first from Stalingrad, then from the Hunter and taking a bullet from the Hunter for Murnau in their second confrontation in the sewers, his view on Soldier doesn't change throughout the mission. As a matter of fact, he gained his personal assistant as a reward after executing three alleged BLU traitors. During the flashback scene showcasing the execution, he feigns hesitancy as means to wait for Archibald to give out rewards of Murnau's choosing for his deeds, thus showing no qualms in harming or killing his own comrades if it meant to achieve his desires.

Fully aware of the truth behind the Gravel Wars, the Respawn Machine and Emesis Diazepam, his real job as a private detective and as Archibald's right hand man is to coverup the truth from both sides of the conflict, including his own, to prevent the war from ending. Though he doesn't care about Archibald either and only sees him as means to further his career. He does not care about anyone but himself and only seeks to rise above the ranks to become Chairman of the Board of the Jules Archibald Foundation, as per Archibald's will. That way, with control of the true mastermind behind the Gravel War, he will continue to prolong the suffering of the mercenaries of both sides and profit off all of it for himself and himself only with nothing to take him down.

Furthermore, Murnau shows a complete lack of self-awareness and is a massive hypocrite. He frequently blames problems caused by him on others and never takes accountability. He calls out Archibald's selfishness despite being selfish himself; he calls Ludwig a liar for denying that he killed Archibald while lying to fabricate his killing of his boss. When arguing with Jane Doe on him having potentially ruined their mission, he blames him for destroying their car with his rocket launcher, in which he attempted a rocket jump. In reality, Murnau slapped Doe's Rocket Launcher off his hands, causing the trigger to accidently pull in the direction of their car. Additionally, he caused his own burn injuries too and unintentionally starting the Conagher Slaughterhouse fire. After fighting Pyro, where he used his invis watch to cloak himself before striking the Pyro with a gasoline can and shooting him in the chest, he lits up a cigarette and throws it at the spilled gasoline on the floor. This causes the gasoline to light up and burn Murnau alive before he fell in the sewer water. In spite of all of this, he declares himself "the only sane man here" after finally confronting Fritz and Doe.

After getting burnt alive, Murnau becomes more vicious, hateful and deeply deceitful with achieving his goals and spiteful while doing so. Although having the right reason to resent Archibald after finding out that his boss faked his kidnapping, his reasoning for it was petty. The only reason why he killed and resented Archibald was because of getting disfigured after being burnt alive and blames it on his boss despite it being caused by himself. A two-faced man, he fabricates his own killing of his boss by blaming it and Jeremy's death on Ludwig, both during his confrontation with Ludwig and at Archibald's funeral in the aftermath. To further show his pettiness, Murnau subsequently abandons Soldier to escape from the Slaughterhouse out of spite for Soldier leaving him during their confrontation with the Butcher, despite being in a situation where Soldier couldn't save him.

Murnau regains composure after the events of the slaughterhouse mission for the funeral. With Archibald killed and what truly happened during the investigation covered up, his path towards complete control of Archibald's legacy and work was set in stone. Using his business persona, he initially displays a polite, friendly, stoic and respectful facade towards Blutarch Mann and everyone else attending the funeral. At the podium before spreading the false narrative behind the investigation, he honors Archibald's contributions to the company, declaring that they would never be forgotten even after his passing. When the mute Jane Doe refused to take part in the coverup by laughing maniacally instead of reading his script, Murnau panics and takes control of the false narrative himself. He then openly takes an aggressive tone regarding Archibald's death, condemning both the company for failing to prevent his death and the "cult" responsible for his kidnapping. Afterwards, he announces that he is the new Chairman of the Board per Archibald's will "to end this treason and corruption once and for all". In the end however, he was unable to do so as immediately after, the undead Ludwig appeared from the casket and shot Murnau in the head, killing him instantly.

Murnau: We're done. I don't care what wretched battalion you think you come from. You are NOT coming with me.
Jane Doe: You shot one of your own before?
Murnau: Get out of my way.
~ Murnau berating then betraying Jane Doe.
Archibald: Who the hell are you?
Murnau: It's me, Jules.
Archibald: Oh, thank god, Corporal! You've come to save me!
Murnau: Have I? I've always been the one to save you, Archie. I did your dirty work, hid it from everyone and look what it did to me!
Archibald: My god!
Murnau: Who was there to save me, Jules? You've never cared about anyone but yourself!
Archibald: Corporal... no! Please, for god's sake!
Murnau: Well, there's no one here to protect you now.
Archibald: But, I... I've given you everything you wanted!
Murnau: And I'm giving you exactly what you deserve. (shoots Archibald in the head)
~ Murnau turning against Archibald and killing him.
Hello, doctor.
~ Murnau to the tied-up Ludwig.
Murnau: Open it.
Ludwig: I can't!
Murnau: I insist.
Ludwig: It's not mine.
Murnau: Liar!
Jane Doe: Tell him how you got the case, Fritz.
Ludwig: I stole it.
Murnau: (punches Ludwig) Impossible.
Jane Doe: Forget this! Where is Archibald?
Murnau: Archibald is dead! Everything this man has told you is a lie. He killed him... and the boy.
Ludwig: No... that's not true!
Murnau: What is true to you? Or you? Who ran away? I am the only sane man here.
Jane Doe: I took a bullet for you.
Murnau: I should have shot you myself.
~ Murnau confronting Jane Doe and Ludwig.
Now you know how it feels. You won... Go.
~ Murnau sparing Jane Doe after Ludwig dies.
