~ The Devourer to Matt. |
The Devourer is the main antagonist of the 2021 Epic Battle Fantasy fanfic Once More, Into the Maw of Defeat. Like in the original series, the Devourer is an eldritch monster who created the universe and seeks to maintain the order in it by ridding it of free will.
Personality[]
Like in the original series, the Devourer is a control freak who wants to control the universe how it pleases and have everyone completely obey its design. It despises free will and will do anything just to get rid of it, even if it includes erasing an entire planet. The story also gives the Devourer a slightly sadistic side such as when it twist its teeth to form a smile when it gloats to Matt that the player, his "guardian", will eventually give up fighting and leave, allowing it to remake the universe as it pleases.
Synopsis[]
The Devourer doesn't appear up until after Matt and the party defeat the Cosmic Gigalith. It begins the fight with it slashing Matt with its spiked tentacle, leaving him with deep wounds, only for them to be healed by magic. When Matt lands a hit on one of its eyeballs, the Devourer responds with throwing him into a hard stone, hurting his back badly, even though Natalie undoes the damage with her magic afterwards. As Matt gets the last of his wounds healed, the Devourer fires a laser at his party and then stabs him with one of its tentacles. It fires a laser again, this time, pulverizing Matt entirely, only for him to be brought back to normal thanks to Auto-Revive.
As the fight continues, the Devourer deletes Earth from existence, forcing the "Delete" status on Matt and his party. The party start damaging the Devourer with their limit breaks, leaving with only a sliver of its health. However, the Devourer heals itself and buff itself before starting to attack the party in brutal ways. No matter how much they are revived, whether through magic, coffee or the player themselves reloading the save file, the Devourer continues to slaughter them repeatedly.
When only Matt is left, the Devourer grabs him with its tentacle and gloats to him that the player will eventually give up and quit the game for good. Matt cracks a smile and accepts his fate before being killed by the monster's spiked tentacle. The Devourer's actions would eventually traumatize Matt following the restart of the game, being haunted by the visions of having to see his comrades die over and over again.
