An Unamed Entity is the main antagonist of the fan made analog horror series Inside Out Tapes created by L30-K72 based on the Pixar animated films.
He is an emotion-like creature that manifested in Riley’s mind and over the course of a few months, took full control over Headquarters and began damaging Riley’s mental health.
Biography[]
Background[]
Riley would be put in a situation where her father took advantage of her and sexually abused her and all the emotions in HQ would agree not to talk about it to help Riley move on. This would cause her parents to get medications for her to help with her fragile mental health. Eventually, a disorder would manifest in Riley's subconscious and she would stop taking her meds, allowing Psychosis to manifest in her mind.
The Entity manifested in Riley’s mind at some point and began creating false memories. He created enough to pile up a massive mountain of them that rivaled the mountain of memories seen in the second film. At some point he infiltrated Headquarters and looked in the shadows, observing the Emotions. His presence was felt by Joy who was unnerved by him and quickly reached the conclusion that he wasn’t a new Emotion as she observed him trying to manipulate Riley with fabricated thoughts. His false memories began to affect Riley’s mental health and she was prescribed with several pills as treatment. Inside the mind, Joy constantly got rid of the false memories and sent them to the back of the mind, resulting in the aforementioned mountain.
The Entity also began to instill false beliefs in Riley's Sense of Self as well as spur hallucinations to make her see people as horrifying monsters with deformed faces.
TRAUMATIZED[]
Spurred by the accident with Mr. Andersen and how Riley's subconscious forgot it, The Entity created a false memory which depicted Riley and her parents getting involved in a car accident. The memory was then planted in Riley’s subconscious and remained there for days, repeating itself over and over. Joy tried to remove it but was unable to, as the memory had become corrupted. This began to severely affect Riley’s mental state as she remained in her room in an uncontrolled state.
The third part of the story would later reveal the car accident to have been a false memory planted by The Entity, however it also reveals that Riley was involved in an accident where her father sexually abused her, to which The Entity would take advantage of Riley's vulnerable state to make it's move.
Riley’s state began to be observed by the Mind of Riley corporation, which noted that the time in which the Entity was in control was when nothing in Riley’s life made any sense at all. One night while hiding in the manual section, The Entity approached Joy and assaulted her, corrupting her. Joy began showing some changes over the next days and by the fifth day, Anxiety suggested she be locked in a jar for the safety of the other emotions. At some point, a putrid smell began to be felt by the other emotions.
The Entity later approached Envy and corrupted her as well, lengthening her limbs. Envy then released Joy and the two went on a rampage, resulting in Anger and Sadness being killed as well as Disgust and Embarrassment becoming infected. Fear, Anxiety and Ennui were injured but managed to escape, being forced to kill Envy in order to survive. The Sense of Self began to wither due to the lack of emotions. Afterwards, the Entity continued to taunt Riley before taking control by putting an idea in the console: For Riley to take her own life.
QTJDPTJT[]
After having taken full control of the mind, The Entity had the corrupted Joy and Embarrassment go into long term memory, both to hunt down the remaining emotions and to dispose of the Mind Workers, managing to take out at least one. Amidst the chase, Ennui was forced to shoot down the corrupted Joy as well. The Entity proceeded with his plan, resulting in an alarm sounding throughout the mind, to which Fear realized the Entity’s intentions and stated that only a miracle could save Riley. Luckily, as Riley prepared to hang herself, she was saved by her mother as she burst in and helped her calm down. It is then revealed he managed to corrupt Nostalgia as well.
MY DEAR RILEY[]
It's revealed that after Riley's failed suicide, The Entity remained in Headquarters and sent out the corrupted Nostalgia to hunt down the remaining emotions as they made their way back to Headquarters, with Anxiety stating that The Entity would continue to torment Riley until he could make her end everything and "take the easy way out". In the meantime, The Entity began to make Riley hallucinate even more and somehow began directly speaking to her, making it so that she could begin doubting her sanity, she herself states that "everything hurts" suggesting the mental state caused by him also began to physically affect her. The Entity also began to plot the murder of Riley's parents, making her sufficiently unstable to the point she would have to kill others to rid herself of the hallucinations, constantly mocking her and forcing her to see images of her expirience with her father to torment her over how he's to blame for her current predicament.
Later, Riley's friends would show up to visit her and check up on her, to which he would make her hallucinate once more by forcing her too see her friends forever stuck in the same facial expression as himself, unnerving Riley due to their smiles and apparent appearance. Meanwhile, Nostalgia would intercept the surviving emotions, and reveal that she and those corrupted were still conscious and aware of what happened around him, being in constant pain due to The Entity's actions, asking Ennui to put her out of her misery, to which she complies.
Eventually, the rogue emotions would find their way to a recall tube that could take them back to Headquarters. As this happened, while a frightened Riley talked with her friends, The Entity would speak to her and question why she would be afraid given that her friends and parents held the blame for her current situation, mostly her father, but he would be interrupted as Ennui arrived at HQ and shot him through the skull. However, The Entity would survive this and mockingly asked Ennui if she believed one shot would end it all, to which she confronted him over how all the emotions agreed not to talk about the accident, with him replying that in spite of that Riley would remember what caused her condition.
The Entity would then make Riley remember the moment where her father assaulted her and masquerade himself with Riley's face, telling the emotions that it's death would be "just another in the crowd", to which Ennui would simply ask Fear to give her Anxiety's spear. As The Entity prepared to attack, Ennui threw the spear at the console and successfully broke the idea planted in, releasing Riley from her suicidal thoughts. This would cause The Entity to suddenly freeze as Riley's friends embraced her and reassured her she was not alone, telling her to think of those who loved her and promising to help her overcome her disorder while the three emotions embraced him too. It is unknown if The Entity is still active in Riley's mind after this.
Motives[]
While The Entity would remain as mostly a mystery for the first two parts, the reveal that Riley was sexually abused by her father in the third part is heavily implied to be the catalyst for The Entity's manifestation, and his motives are to make Riley remember it as the other emotions had suppressed the memory of the event. This however, doesn't justify The Entity, as while he is right for acting against Riley's father, he shouldn't have killed the other emotions and much less take out all the Mind Workers, not to mention his psychological torture of Riley.

Trivia[]
- What exactly The Entity is and it's nature haven't been fully clarified, as Joy states that he's not an emotion, however he can still do several things the Emotions can, such as using the console, creating and displaying memories, and influencing Riley with ideas.
- The third part of the story finally confirms that he is a Disorder that manifested in Riley's mind.
- The Entity was at first believed to be a form of Trauma that manifested due to the car accident that Riley and her parents were involved in. However, the second part of the story completely disproves this theory or at least makes it very hard to be possible as it’s revealed that The Entity has been around for a very long time, before the accident even took place, and then again, it’s also implied that the accident never even happened, being one of many fabricated memories.
- "MY DEAR RILEY" would finally silence all doubts by revealing The Entity to be a developing disorder in Riley's mind as well as the car crash to be a completely fabricated memory created by The Entity to act upon an event between Riley and her father.
- In spite of this, at the end when Bree tells Riley they can overcome her disorder, the word "disorder" is crossed out for a second and replaced with "trauma", suggesting that The Entity is an amalgamation of these concepts, being a disorder that was brought forth because of a traumatic event.
- The Entity has been heavily implied to be a form of Psychosis developing in Riley’s mind:
- The title of the second video is composed of a random assortment of letters, however if one uses the previous letter of the alphabet to the ones on the title, it spells out Psychosis.
- At the very end of the second video, a QR code flashes quickly in the screen, if the code is scanned, it redirects to a Medline Plus site describing the condition and its symptoms and causes.
- Psychosis itself is a condition in which a person is unable to tell the difference between what’s real and isn’t, sometimes hallucinating. It can be the result of Brain Tumors or other diseases such as Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia.
- The Entity could also be a manifestation of Psychosis created by either Bipolar disorder or Schizophrenia, as Riley shows several symptoms for both and has been shown to be taking Quetiapine, an antipsychotic used to treat both of said disorders.
- It not fully clear on wether the Accident truly happened or if it was fabricated by The Entity to manipulate Riley.
- The memory of the Accident is fully confirmed to be a False Thought, however it isn’t clear if the memory was altered by The Entity or created from scratch, as Riley fully believes that the Accident is real and possibly believed her parents died in it. However, in the memory when the car is about to collide with a truck, it briefly morphs into a silhouette that resembles The Entity
- The most likely conclusion is that the accident never happened (something acknowledged by Joy) and is manifested as a disorder suffered by Riley, such as Dementia or Bipolar Disorder. The third part would confirm this, revealing the accident as a false memory created as a result of another accident involving Riley's father.
- The popular channel, Film Theory covered the Inside Out Tapes due to a desire to address the deep themes of the series such as Trauma and Self-Harm, and discuss self-help, Lee also states that this is one of the darkest topics ever covered in the channel’s history.
- While the car accident is confirmed as a fabricated memory, it also reveals an actual accident that involved Riley's father which is what led to the events of the series.
