Dying by any other means is better than becoming the host. You will still live until it is done with you. You will watch the deaths of cats you know by your own paws. There is nothing you can do about it. We cannot aid you. Your screams will be silent.
~ The description that "StarClan" gives detailing the fates of the entity's hosts.
If anything happens, I'll protect you.
~ "Jayfeather" to Alderheart, repeated as it reveals its true form to Shadowpaw.

The unnamed entity is the main antagonist of It Protects You, a Warriors analogue horror video created by the Warrior Cats Fandub channel. It is a parasitic creature of unknown origin that has systematically killed and replaced countless cats in order to morph the Clans into its own image.

Its true form is voiced by WolfFangProductions. When posing as Jayfeather, it is voiced by Gearstar, his usual voice actor on the channel. As StarClan, it is voiced by an ensemble.

Appearance[]

The host cannot keep together for too long. Over time, the body will deform.
~ "StarClan" telling of how the entity disfigures its hosts' bodies.

The entity does not have a truly defined appearance, as it normally takes over the body of its host to pose as a clan cat. However, from what is seen of it taking over Jayfeather, the entity seems to be pure black with faint blue markings, almost like a starry night sky. Its side of Jayfeather has messy fur and a visible rib cage, and many sets of forelegs seem to spill out from its chest.

There are two types of disfigurement a host can experience over time. Some hosts will deform to better "resemble" their warrior name, such as:

  • Spiderleg: While his body is not all too visible in the darkness, one can make out that his legs have become elongated and spindly, akin to those of a spider. His eyes glowed red in the dark.
  • Blossomheart: Flower-like growths appeared throughout her body, with one growing out of her eye. Her tail split open in a similar blossoming fashion.
  • Ravenpaw: Ravenpaw's body became much more extreme than the others, his neck elongated to the point of bending backwards and his frame skeletal and twisted. His chest seems to split open to resemble wings.

Alternatively, the host may morph to exaggerate their worst physical or personal attribute, examples including:

  • Hawkfrost: He seemed to constantly protrude blood from his mouth, akin to the prophecy that foretold his downfall. Large empty eyes and an exaggerated toothy smile are present, and his chest is impaled by the spike of a fox trap, again leaking blood.
  • Briarlight: Nearly every inch of her body was mangled beyond recognition, with her legs especially being twisted. Many parts of her body are skeletal, with her fur and flesh being ripped clean from her body. Of the hosts seen, Briarlight is in the worst state of decay.
  • Tigerstar: The chest wound that Scourge gave him in life has reopened, letting his entrails spill out onto the ground. Purple starry liquid leaks from his eyes and mouth.
  • Jayfeather: Jayfeather's body seems to have split in two halves, a starry, shadowy left half and his regular right half. Eyes appear all across his shadow side and multiple paws come out from his chest fluff. Jayfeather's left eye has been replaced by a cluster of smaller ones, while his right eye glows and seems to be swollen. An interesting inversion is that Jayfeather's lack of an attribute (that being sight) is represented here.

Personality[]

You have helped me grow strong. Keeping you alive would be... unwise... Shape the Clans into my image, unable to resist again. The code dies with you. WITH ALL OF YOU.
~ The entity speaking in the prologue.

While its intentions are unknown, the entity is manipulative to get its goals, taking the forms of loved ones to lure everyone to their demise. The entity, through the guise of a friend, promises to protect and care for its victims before killing everyone around it. Given how it taunts Shadowpaw right before it turns him into its new host, it seems to have some sort of sadism.

Its ultimate plan is to remake the Clans into one fit for itself, a goal that it failed to achieve in the past. What exactly it entails is unclear. The entity also seems to wish for the Warrior Code to be dismantled, again the ultimate effects of doing so being unknown to anyone but itself.

Biography[]

The origins of the entity is unknown, as well as how long it has been around, but considering Ravenpaw, who left after the first book, is one of its victims, it's likely to have been around ever since the first series. For as long as it has been around, it has killed and maimed its victims, keeping a single one around to be its host, using its new voice in order to deceive the Clan cats and continue an endless cycle of death. It likely does not stop at the living, as two of its known hosts (Tigerstar and Hawkfrost) had already died by the time it took use of their forms.

Right before The Broken Code can begin, the Moonpool, the clan cats' connection to StarClan, froze over during a harsh winter. However, on a cold night, ShadowClan medicine cat apprentice Shadowpaw went to the Moonpool for the half-moon gathering, only to find that the ice had shattered and the moon halfway covered.

Not long after, Jayfeather and Alderheart arrive on scene, with none of the other medicine cats around. While Alderheart is concerned, Jayfeather tries to get the few medicine cats there to try to communicate with StarClan, with the other two eventually agreeing upon.

In the starry water, StarClan does not entirely appear before Shadowpaw, instead asking if he is alone. Upon selecting that he isn't, StarClan warns the medicine cat apprentice to stay alone before he raises his head to leave. Confused, he calls out to his fellow medicine cats, only for there to be no reply.

Now all by himself, Shadowpaw rationalizes that all three of them are being spoken to individually and dips his head once again, this time accepted. However, before he can continue, he must pass three quizzes to verify that he is a medicine cat.

The first quiz is a simple identification trial, finding the right herb for the right condition, with it suddenly going off the rails and asking for deathberries as treatment for horrid disfigurement. The second quiz is simply guessing which sound is an abnormality. Question one's answer is a simple dog bark, but the second has a sound completely alien to the cats, and the third has the exact same horrific drone for all three answers. The final test is to spot which cat is the most unsettling. The first answer simply has five paws, the second is horrifically mangled, and the third is morphed to resemble a creature not like anything the cats had ever seen.

After verifying his status as a medicine cat, Shadowpaw is welcomed by StarClan to receive information he cannot disclose. A killer has been set loose onto the Clans, one that takes over the still-living bodies of its victims to take over and kill whatever is around, making the most of its time in the host's body before it decays and needs to find a new vessel.

Throughout its talk, StarClan seems worried, seemingly conflicted as to what it wants Shadowpaw to even do. It conflicts with itself, subliminally trying to get Shadowpaw to leave while still rambling on and wanting him to keep focus. Near the end of it all, however, StarClan itself is put in distress, practically screaming for Shadowpaw to leave as soon as he can.

Out of the Moonpool, Shadowpaw looked around and saw a crimson body lying by the edge of the water, motionless and staining the starry liquid with blood. Alderheart was dead, and the one responsible was Jayfeather... or rather, the entity who had taken over his body. It mocks Shadowpaw in its true voice, repeating the vow of protection "Jayfeather" had said before, and makes the poor apprentice into its new host, repeating the cycle yet again.

What happens next is up to interpretation.

Trivia[]

  • While not explicitly stated, the fact that the rest of the medicine cats have not shown up implies that the entity had killed all of them before the video began.
  • The entity is incapable of making its host say new words or phrases. It can only parrot what has been said by the host before getting infected.
  • The entity seems to take heavy inspiration from the Alternates from The Mandela Catalogue.
    • Like the Alternates, the entity kills and replaces its victims. However, while the Alternates are an entire species who kill by inflicting mental distress before taking their spot, the single entity here physically takes control of its host and personally kills its victims.
    • StarClan's interpretation of the entity is a pitch black silhouette with two white eyes, matching up the common depiction of an Alternate's true form.
    • One way to spot whether or not the entity has taken over someone is to check for abnormalities in the body, something explicitly warned about in The Mandela Catelogue.
    • StarClan's advice to "run away and hide" from the entity has identical wording to the advice in The THINK Principle, the first episode of The Mandela Catalogue.
    • The third test StarClan gives, spotting which one of the cats is disfigured (and thus taken over by the entity) is also similar to the end of The THINK Principle, where the exact format is used.
  • Given its appearance, as well as the fact that it seemingly has influence over the Moonpool, it's heavily implied that the entity has ties to StarClan. Whether or not it comes from it directly, an outside force, or even StarClan itself is unknown.
    • One possible identity of the entity is Ashfur, the main antagonist of The Broken Code and a rogue StarClan cat who takes over Bramblestar's body. In addition, Ashfur uses Shadowsight early on in the arc as a means to an end. However, Ashfur was not dead yet when Ravenpaw left, and his unfamiliarity with SkyClan would make it hard for him to blend in as Blossomheart. Additionally, Ashfur is primarily motivated by his lust over Squirrelflight, while the entity seems to want the Clans to change to serve itself.
  • It's heavily foreshadowed that Jayfeather is not what he seems long before the reveal.
    • Jayfeather brings up Alderheart falling into the Moonpool, with Alderheart's reply "Stop saying that" seemingly indicating that he's been repeating it a few times.
    • Jayfeather promises to protect Alderheart, with the exact wording only having been said back when Alderheart was young.
    • Throughout StarClan's assessment, the phrase "The next attack is imminent. He isn't real. I am not real. He found me. Death by any other means is--" can be steadily made out, with segments of the text briefly flashing as the video goes on.
    • The very name of the video itself being "It protects you" lining up with Jayfeather saying "I'll protect you" indicates that Jayfeather is the "it" in question.
