| ~ The Monolith revealing his selfish nature to Mick. |
The Monolith is the titular overarching protagonist of the 2022 YouTube short superhero film of the same name by Lagarto Films.[1] He is a superhero who initially appears completely honorable like any superhero, but is later revealed to be rather selfish.
He is portrayed by Jonathan Donatiu, who also played Sergeant Boulder in GTA In Real Life.
Biography[]
The Monolith is first mentioned right at the beginning of the story, being heard as the subject of a podcast that discusses his most recent act of heroism, in which he defeated one of the biggest gang leaders in town. Mick is a lifelong fan of the superhero, even having a poster of him in his room. Later that day, Mick leaves his house to go to the store to get some groceries. Just as he parks his bike, he overhears some suspicious activity in the back. Curiosity gets the better of him, and Mick sneaks to the source of the noise, where he discovers two men trying to dispose of a dead body. Horrified, Mick tries to quietly sneak away, but he accidently steps on an empty soda can, which alerts the thugs, and a chase ensues.
The thugs chase Mick away from the store, but he is too fast on his bike for them to catch up on their own, so they call their gang for help, and they speedily drive down the road, quickly catching up to Mick. It isn't long before they corner him. Mick begs them to let him go, and even tries to run away, but they easily overpower him and rough him up a little. Just as the leader is about to shoot him, the Monolith arrives on the scene, much to Mick's relief and excitement. Some of the gang members, intimidated by the Monolith, chicken out and flee, but the rest of them stay to fight him. The thugs keep acting tough until the Monolith starts attacking, and the battle begins.
After beating up some of the thugs, Monolith checks on Mick, who is still overjoyed by being saved by his favorite superhero. Then, Monolith gets shot in the hand, which slightly affects his performance against the other gang members. Mick is initially worried for the Monolith, who reassures him at first. Suddenly, however, the Monolith uses Mick as a shield, much to the latter's shock. After shoving Mick away to fend for himself against the thugs, he seemingly tries to run away, only for the men to gang up on him when they get tired of Mick. One of the thugs drops his gun, which Mick gets a hold of to shoot at them, managing to kill one of them. After Mick fights the last two goons for a bit, Monolith finishes off the last one with a bat before bragging about saving the day once again, but he is also impressed by Mick participating in the fight, even offering to take him on as a sidekick.
Monolith even gives Mick his "business card" before leaving, but Mick, feeling betrayed by the Monolith's selfishness, is now completely uninterested by the idea of looking up to him anymore, even when he notices that the card is fake, which, in Mick's eyes, makes Monolith look even more like a fraud. Ultimately, as he goes home, Mick feels heartbroken by the fact that his idol could be so selfish and egotistical. Enraged, he rips his poster from the wall and throws it in the trash, which marks the end of the film.
Later, as depicted at the end of Worst Day Ever, the Monolith appears on the news. The reporter interviews him, and he brags about saving the day on his own, even though it was not entirely true.
Personality[]
On the surface, the Monolith appears as pure of heart like almost any typical superhero. He is charming, strong, and even fast. However, Monolith is more selfish than meets the eye, as shown by his act of using Mick as a human shield. Monolith is even boastful, often claiming all the credit even if he didn't do all of the work, like when Mick had to fight some of the thugs himself.
Trivia[]
- While the Monolith's exact basis is never specified, it is possible that he is a knockoff of the most common superheroes, particularly Superman.
