The Nightmares are major antagonists-turned-villainous allies in Five Nights at Freddy's fanfiction Mike's New Ghostly Family, by Archcommander-Tenebros.

The Nightmares are a powerful clan of demons that rules over the lower circles of Hell, taking forms of twisted and monstrous versions of Freddy Fazbear franchise's animatronics as a testament to the corruption of innocence and destruction of purity that is associated with the franchise. Despite dedicating themselves to a cause of evil, they are known to assist the forces of good on occasion when it comes to stopping William Afton, the mortal they thoroughly despise for his cruelty.

History[]

The Nightmares were ruling over the lowest circles of Hell for thousands of years, their rule uncontested even with seven making their number and their names feared all over the Hell. When Evan Afton, the victim of the Bite of '83, wished to make his brother Michael pay for all the suffering he brought to his life and death via Fredbear's jaws, Old Man Consequences, the guardian of the afterlife antechamber known as the Crimson Lake, granted his wish in the most unwanted way possible by sending the Nightmares after him, trapping him in cursed dreams for the next 8 nights from which he's unable to wake up unless he survives until 6 AM, until then being killed all over and over again unless he passes the night. For this torture, the Nightmares took twisted and monstrous forms of Freddy Fazbear franchise's animatronics, which they kept even after the torture as a testament to the corruption of innocense associated with the franchise. For a very long time, Michael allowed them to kill him as a way to atone for his accidental murder of Evan until his younger brother's voice encouraged him to fight back. Eventually, Michael was able to fend off against their attacks and finally free himself from these cursed nightmares.

Once the Nightmares claimed William Afton's soul, the murderer decided to make a wager with Nightmare, sending him after Mike Schmidt and his new ghostly family, believing that, should Nightmare reveal all their dark secrets to each other, then they'll turn on each other, breaking their new family apart, while Nightmare believed otherwise. Though Nightmare managed to break their spirits at first, Mike was able to counter all of the demon's arguments and deny him the chance to break them, with Mike's new family staying loyal to each other in spite of Nightmare's words, ensuring that Afton lost his wager. With the minimal protections provided by the Heaven stripped away from the murderer for a thousand years, the Nightmares began to torture him with greater intensity than before, starting the tortures with a device that reenacted his death in springlock suit, a suggestion provided by Mike Schmidt when Nightmare revealed Afton's involvement in his attack, with springs imbued with poison and the device setting itself aflame.

For the next year, the Nightmares didn't interact with Schmidt's family, instead tending to their own businesses and messing with the mortals, Schmidt included, by adding strokes of bad luck to their games, though Nightmare Fredbear met Schmidt and his family in Las Vegas, challenging the man to a high-stakes game of poker, with Mike emerging victorious. It would all change, however, when Vucarik decided to make his move against Lucifer, conspiring with William Afton to ensure the success of his plans. After distracting the Nightmares with the diversion attack, he grievously injured the younger Nightmares, stealing their essences and giving them to Afton before sending the killer to Earth while he makes an attack against Lucifer. The Nightmares, outraged by the attack on their younglings, joined the battle against Vucarik and his allies, shedding their animatronic forms while Nightmare would warn Schmidt of impending Afton's attack before joining the fight as well.

Once Nightmare crushed Vucarik's rebellion and defeated the would-be usurper with ease, he and the Greater Nightmares went to Earth to assist Mike Schmidt and his family against demonically empowered Afton. While Nightmarionne kept the ghost children busy, Nightmare and Nightmare Fredbear went to Mike's bedroom to oversee his fight against Afton in the mindscape, with Nightmare joining to provide assistance to Mike in case of necessity. Eventually, Mike was able to defeat Afton and grievously torture him until he was stopped by his mother's ghost, and the Nightmares managed to send Afton's soul back to Hell. Having developed a new respect for Schmidt, Nightmare blessed Mike with Anathema Curse that would ensure that Afton would suffer in unspeakable agony should he approach the man and gave him a warrior's salute before departing with Nightmare Fredbear and Nightmarionne.

Afterwards, the Nightmares designed a new torture chamber for William Afton, designed to humiliate him in front of the entire Hell, modelled after Freddy Fazbear's pizzerias and containing every single animatronic made by Freddy Fazbear and Circus Baby's franchises, forcing Afton to relive the suffering of all nightguards that perished in the establishments by making him fend off against all animatronics ever made.

When Fazbear Entertainment revived itself and inadvertedly brought Glitchtrap into existence by scanning Springtrap's circuit boards when making their new VR game, with thousands of their game's copies each containing its own Glitchtrap, the Nightmares were irritated by the fact that Afton managed to find a way to cheat death again. Afterwards, per Old Man Consequences' guidance, they performed the ritual that would destroy every single copy of the game with Glitchtrap in it, though they soon learn that one managed to escape. As Nightmare Bonnie conducted experiments on Glitchtrap to study his nature and behavior, Nightmare and Mike were able to secure a copy of the game which contained an escaped Glitchtrap and gain complete autonomy over the video game's development, with Nightmare using it as an opportunity to include multiple failsaves to ensure that Glitchtrap won't return, also adding Nightmare animatronics into the game to make the presence of his clan known to people of Earth, even if it's through the fiction.

Afterwards, the Nightmares were introduced to the rest of Schmidt's family, possessing their in-game counterparts that were imbued with their demonic essences. For the most part, they were frequently mocking the ghost children for their losses, with only occasionally providing a tip or two when the challenge becomes genuinely unfair and Grim Foxy being told to aid Mike in finding the secret implemented into the game, the one that would provide the Schmidts with a hint on who is the victim of Glitchtrap's possession. Once the secret was found, Dreadbear told Mike on how to trigger the secret, giving them a slight lead on who the victim is, providing them with the knowledge of the victim's gender and voice, before the Nightmares unpossessed their in-game counterparts and departed, tending to their own businesses.
