~ The SOUL's response to Spamton's question of whether or not he impressed them. |
The SOUL, also known as the Player or Kris, is the main protagonist of DELTARUNE: Salt Route.
In an alternate route in the second chapter of the game, the player would collect five Salt Stains found in the Cyber World. After doing so, they would recruit Spamton into their party and begin using him as their puppet, slaughtering dozens of Darkners.
Biography
After Kris and the player enter the Cyber City, they would travel across the map and collect five Salt Stains. When they encounter Spamton in the alleyway and fight him, Spamton becomes confused halfway through the fight and begins searching for his keys. The player offers to help Spamton look for them, recruiting him as part of their party.
The player would drag Spamton throughout the Cyber City like a ragdoll and encounter multiple enemies. The player would have Spamton obliterate everyone in their path, with mercy no longer being an option. Eventually, Spamton begins to question the player who he still believes to be Kris, beginning to have doubts they are actually helping him and were just using him. The player would begin to manipulate Spamton, however, further coaxing him into following them. At some point, the player and Spamton encounter an Addison who was once friends with Spamton. The player would order Spamton to kill them, despite their offer to rekindle their relationship with the poor salesman.
Eventually, the player and Spamton would enter Queen's mansion. They would find her on the roof and fight her, Queen not speaking a single word throughout the entire fight. After both Spamton and the player defeat her, she vanishes entirely from the game, leaving her fate unknown.
The player would sit on the carpet with Spamton and have one final exchange. Spamton would ask Kris whether or not they impressed him. The player would say yes, only for Spamton ask again and again about whether or not he actually impressed them. Eventually, the player says no. Further saddened, Spamton would get up and acknowledge that perhaps he couldn't impress everyone, before walking away, never to be seen again.
When the player tries to leave Queen's boss room, the game wouldn't let them go anywhere else. When they tried to save their progress, they became unable to. Unless the player exited the game, they would be forever trapped inside of Queen's boss room.
Personality
While their personality isn't exactly the clearest given the entire fact they have only one line, it is made pretty clear that the SOUL is incredibly manipulative and controlling over Spamton, agreeing to help him find his keys only to have him join them in their slaughter. When Spamton begins to question the player, they begin to try convincing him that they are on his side and trying to help him.
Overall, it is made pretty clear that they truly do not care about Spamton at all. After Spamton asks them whether or not he impressed them repeatedly, the SOUL tells Spamton harshly that they were not, despite previously telling them yes. They just viewed Spamton as a tool in their slaughter and nothing more.

Trivia
- According to the creator of the AU, even if the player couldn't successfully manipulate Spamton during their massacre, the route wouldn't end. Instead, it would just continue with less monsters.
