The Shadow is the main antagonist/deuteragonist of Snonk's fanfic series, the Fnafverse. They serve as the titular main antagonist of a burning shadow, the main protagonist of my greatest creation, and an unseen antagonist in The Lonely and Freedom.

It is a mysterious being which was fascinated by the concept of death and wanted to learn more about human souls, but due to lacking a physical form, had to manipulate William Afton into committing all the murders for it.

History[]

Nothing about the Shadow's backstory is known other than the fact that it is a millennia-old being that, like its "brethren", was fascinated by life. But, while everyone else loved the idea of living, the Shadow became obsessed with the idea of dying. However, due to being a noncorporeal being, it couldn't actually hurt anyone. After many years, it eventually found a way to see people suffer: William Afton, an ambitious and intelligent man who the Shadow manipulated into following its orders by revealing him the potential a human soul has.

Afton, despite knowing how horrible his actions are, couldn't contain his curiosity and decided to build the Funtime animatronics, which would capture and contain children so he could get their souls for himself. During this, he also made a prototype that he later discarded for the finished version. However, Afton's daughter Elizabeth ended up being murdered by one of his animatronics. This caused William to be full of grief, with the Shadow seeing an opportunity in this. It manipulated him with false promises of saving his other two children, Michael and his unnamed youngest son. To do this, the Shadow entered the latter's mind and started tormenting him with nightmares which would leave him traumatized, before moving on to Michael, lying to him that William loves his brother more than him. This caused Mike to become full of hatred towards his family, eventually leading to him accidentally killing his brother during The Bite of '83, something the Shadow orchestrated and watched.

Following this, Afton would become full of hatred, first sending Michael on a suicide mission before beginning to murder children with his own hands, having nothing left to lose. The Shadow was at first amazed by this, but grew bored of the same thing happening. So, it told him that his first five victims are still alive and vengeful, and that he must destroy the animatronic shells they're trapped in for his own safety. However, it only resulted in the souls being set free and chasing Afton into the Spring Bonnie suit, where he was crushed alive, but remained alive despite this.

Years later, William would be freed and sent to Fazbear's Fright, where he tried to kill the security guard. Eventually, the building would be set on fire, and the Shadow would appear before him one last time. As William slowly burned to death, he finally realised that he was played for a fool this whole time.
