Tsuji Masanobu, also known as the Mad General, is a minor antagonist of The New Order: Last Days of Europe, a Hearts of Irons 4 mod.
Masanobu serves as a major antagonist in Long Yun's storyline, being the leader of the Northwestern Area Army in the Japanese-occupied China. He was a cruel and sadistic war criminal that was responsible for the infamous Bataan Death March.
Personality[]
Even in the Imperial Japanese Army, Masanobu was depicted as a horrible and sadistic monster in human skin, who was also a fervent supporter of Japanese Fascism and imperialism. He had a remorseless attitude when committed war crimes as well as numerous crimes against humanity in China and Southeast Asia, including the implied cannibalism during the Bataan Death March.
However, his war crimes were concealed intentionally by the Japanese media. As such, he was revered as a "war hero" in his home country, using this occupation to win IJA's favor.
During the Japanese occupation of China, Masanobu oppressed Chinese people just like his colleagues did, and he started a raid against neighboring provinces. He also stubbornly stood against Long Yun's rebellion to liberate China.
Needless to say, Masanobu was so much of a depraved and murderous monster, that his death was given to be as brutal and yet satisfying as possible. Whilst he was loyal to his home country, nothing justifies the fact that he was also a fanatic that endorsed his home country's horrible war crimes and oppression.
Long Yun held great hatred towards Masanobu and personally executed him to avenge his victims.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Tsuji Masanobu's past was shrouded in mystery, but one thing that was certain was that he had committed unforgivable atrocities during the world War II, especially the infamous Bataan Death March. However, his atrocities were concealed intentionally by the media of Japan that glorified the aggressive war against China and hailed him as a war hero.
After the Alliance failed the World War II and China's subsequent occupation by Japan, Doihara Kenji established a colonial state in the occupied Ningxia, known as Seihoku Homengun, or the Northwestern Area Army, where he ruled as its governor.
In the 1950s, after Doihara died, Masanobu succeeded him as the leader of Seihoku Homengun. Unlike his predecessor who kept his army restrained for a tighter grip on the Chinese, Masanobu allowed his troops to raise chaos and mayhem across the land and terrorized Chinese people in the region.
Besides, Masanobu also practiced Gekokujo, or “Rule from Below”, and had been rapidly expanding his army as his killer machines to raid and conquer neighboring provinces and regions that was yet to be conquered. This had put him into a conflict with the 40th Army Group.
Long Yun's Path[]
In Long Yun's path, Masanobu served as an obstacle to Long Yun's insurrection, which was aimed to liberate China.
Later, with higher legitimacy on the National Protection Army's side, Ma Jiyuan was finally convinced by Long Yun that the insurrection of southwestern regions was his new hope for China. He eventually join forces peacefully with Long Yun's forces and fought against Masanobu together.
After reclaiming Ning Xia from the Japanese tyranny, Long Yun destroyed the Seihoku Homengun once and for all and personally executed Masanobu, firing 24 bullets into his heart and thus avenging every last victim Masanobu had destroyed.
Trivia[]
- The horrendous Bataan Death March referred to a real-world Japanese war crime in the World War II. In April 1942, the Japanese army forced about 7,6000 Prisoners-in-war (including 66,000 Filipinos and 10,000 Americans) into a torturous march of 7 miles long, which ended killings countless.
- The Japanese soldiers were utterly cruel towards the prisoners and it was said that they even committed cannibalism by eating the prisoners' corpses.
- The war crimes of Masanobu were mentioned in his TNO biography, and it was based on his real-world war crimes in the Southeast Asia, including massacre of Chinese and locals in Malaya as well as orchestrating the Bataan Death March.
- The real-world Masanobu escaped to the Southeast Asia after his war crimes came to light, and he was never found ever since. It was believed that he died there in 1962.
- Originally in the prototype version, Seihoku Homengun started as a puppet state known as Hui (named after one of the ethnic groups of China) that was presumably ran by a group of treasonous Hui Muslims and served as Japan's puppet state in northeastern China. However, this early concept was scrapped and was changed into a full-blown occupied state, directly ran by the IJA.
