~ Tsurugi trying to convince everyone to commit suicide. |
Tsurugi Kinjo is one of the main characters as well as an anti-villain in the korean Danganronpa fangame duology Danganronpa Another and Super Danganronpa Another 2. He serves as the deuteragonist of Danganronpa Another and as an anti-villain in its sequel.
He’s one of the participants in the Killing Game in the Kisaragi Foundation's 3rd lab and one of the students of Hope’s Peak, having joined due to his talent as the “Ultimate Police Officer”.
At first, he was thought to be a kind and pure-hearted man, but after the Chapter 1's execution, he revealed his true nature. After the chapter 1's culprit was called a "friend" by Kanata Inori, Kinjo exclaimed that a murderer is not a friend of his. He said that he believes all criminals deserve to die, regardless of intention.
In chapter 2 he caused the group to split and started using extreme methods to prevent crimes from happening, including secretly keeping track of who leaves their room at night each day. He treated people who disagree with him as “preliminary criminals”.
Personality[]
Despite his malice and delusions, Kinjo is shown to have noble beliefs and to be a protective person. He was genuinely friendly to Yuki, wanted to protect the rest of the participants from being killed, and didn’t hesitate to attack Monokuma when it tried to convince the participants to commit murder. Later, he blamed himself for not being able to stop him, despite Monokuma clearly being too strong for a human to beat. As a cop his biggest wish was to rid the world of crime and despite realizing how unrealistic that is, he still wanted to try to achieve it. As shown after the 6th trial, when he formed the Kisaragi Foundation to combat crime during the Tragedy.
His true animosity comes when dealing with criminals. He believes that all criminals deserved death, even if what they did was accidental. He reprimanded some of the participants for feeling bad about the culprits' deaths and told Akane Taira to kill herself, after she accidentally stabbed Kizuna Tomori in self-defense.
Although Kinjo continuously claiming murder is inexcusable would suggest otherwise, Kinjo himself had killed people, even before the events of the first game. During his free time events, Kinjo admits to have shot "tens of terrorists and with them tens of police officers" as well as accidentally causing the death of his best friend. He justified the first action with his well-known "majority over minority" mindset. He said that it had to be done, as the terrorist would've gone off to kill more, had he not stopped them. Despite that, he still accused Kinji Uehara, who killed 2 people in order to save 100, of being a ruthless killer. Uehara pointed out Kinjo's hypocrisy himself, which was the first event to challenge his ideals.
Kinjo's strong set of beliefs is a result of Kinjo Juu - his father, who was even more extreme. After Kinjo had killed the terrorists and the hostages, including a close friend of his father, Kinjo Juu congratulated him on his decision.
After being trapped in the ballroom in chapter 4, he attempted to force everyone else to commit suicide and then do it himself. He considered that a better alternative to murder. Other characters had assumed he went crazy due to hunger. Kinjo denied that claim, saying he was still sane and doubled down on his mass suicide plan being the correct choice.
Haruhiko Kobashikawa, the victim of case 4, being also an accomplice to his own murder, broke Kinjo as it was completely contradictory to all that he believed. Afterwards he realized he was mistaken for which he decided to atone by taking his own live. Before which, he apologized to everyone for his actions and expressed how he's different to all the other students, that he can't easily change like them, which is why he decided to take the extreme action of suicide. Ultimately, he survives.
After waking up from his failed suicide attempt, Kinjo regained his memories, showing how much he'd grown during his time at Hope's Peak Academy. He immediately felt guilty for what he'd done and asked all the survivors to slap him. Whilst at this point, his views became considerably less extreme, he still showed a deep hatred for criminals, especially the mastermind. After the second mastermind revealed himself and said how he made Juu Kinjo eat the corpse of his best friend, Kinjo fell into the despair. After snapping out of it and escaping from the ruins of the lab, Kinjo had partially reverted to his old beliefs. He went back to a black and white view of the world and solidified his "ends justify the means" philosophy, which wasn't as apparent before, as seen with Uehara Kinji's case.
In the 2nd game, the change to Kinjo's ideology becomes very apparent. Unlike how before he despised all the criminals, now he was willing to cooperate with Syobai Hashimoto. He had expressed his disdain towards Syobai, but deemed working with him to be of more benefit. Kinjo already had problems regarding trusting his classmates - he said himself that he treats everyone with at least 20% suspicion at all times, but that was taken to the extreme in the sequel. Kinjo, despite being the leader of the Kisaragi Foundation, hid the information he knew about Mikado Sannoji and Syobai's cooperation secret from all his subordinates, including Rei Mekaru and Teruya Otori. Due to that lack of trust, Teruya ended up dying, at which point he managed called that a necessary sacrifice. It was also revealed, that Kinjo had killed his father. Which is very different to what he said in the 1st trail of the 1st game, when he claimed that killing criminals is also unjustifiable.
Despite Kinjo's ability to remain calm and composed, it's clear that the deaths of his friends affect him greatly. In the bad ending of the 2nd game, he's shown to have nightmares about Yuki Maeda's death, and in a side story about Teruya's death, he also felt guilty about his actions.
Despite his inner guilt and conscience, his actions ultimately deserve him the title of an anti-villain. He indirectly caused the deaths of the people in Mikado Sannoji's killing game, which Mikado Sannoji points out himself. Although he had good intentions of wanting to fully stop Mikado and save the real Yuki Maeda, he fully willingly risked everyone else's death, and ultimately - his original plan failed, making it all be in vain.

Trivia[]
- Tsurugi Kinjo has a lot of similarities to Nagito Komaeda from the main Danganronpa series:
- Both are anti-villains/anti-heroes who use extreme methods to achieve what they consider to be better.
- Their true colors are revealed during chapter 1 and as a result they are hated by the rest of the participants.
- The two attempted suicide at some point but ended up surviving (through in Nagito's case his suicide succeeded and he only survived because he was inside a simulation, while Tsurugi's suicide attempt failed due to Yuki Maeda's luck)
- Tsurugi Kinjo is considerably strong, as per the creator's words, he could take on his male classmates in a 1v6 (sans Yamato Kisaragi). It's evidenced when he had no problem overwhelming his peers in the ballroom, despite having barely eaten for days.
- The idea behind Tsurugi Kinjo was "Light Yagami without the Death Note".
- Tsurugi Kinjo was not supposed to have such extreme mindset at first. It was a sudden idea of the creator, for which the creator is glad.
