~ Twilight deciding to kill criminals. |
Twilight Sparkle is the protagonist villain of the fanfic Death Note: Equestria by Nonagon, which combines the plot of Death Note with the setting of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. In this story, Twilight has become disillusioned by the growing crime rate and devolves into a serial killer upon discovering the Death Note, which kills anypony whose name is written in it.
History[]
Following the events of the first three seasons, Twilight becomes alarmed at the growing crime rate in Equestria, and is shocked to learn that one of her former classmates, Moondancer, was murdered. One day Twilight takes a trip to Canterlot and meets Sharp Star, who killed Moondancer and has been released, boasting about the deed and showing no remorse. Twilight later stumbles across the Death Note, and though she thinks it isn't real she impulsively writes the name of Sharp Star. The next morning, she learns that he has died and is shocked. However, she soon uses it again to kill a pony who was attacking a school, and then decides that she must make Equestria a better place by killing criminals. She then meets the shinigami Byuk, who dropped the Death Note as he wanted to visit Equestria.
As her murders continue, Twilight takes on the name Kira, and the detective L (who is revealed to be Lyra Heartstrings) is put on the case. L suspects the killings are the work of a single pony and uses a broadcast to trick Twilight into killing a stand-in, thus proving Twilight is in Ponyville. Twilight is able to access police communications and learns some of L's theories, then discovers she's being tailed, so she conducts some experiments to determine how much she can control her victims.
She then uses the Death Note to set up a robbery, exploiting the situation to get the name of the pony following her, who is an old flame of Rarity's. Twilight later uses the Death Note to control the pony Storm Seeker, forcing him to deliver information on all of L's agents, who Twilight then kills, while Storm Seeker is devoured by a manticore. However, this gives L enough information to conclude that Kira can access police information and therefore Twilight is a likely suspect as very few ponies would have been able to do this. L puts Twilight's library under surveillance but Twilight tricks the Cutie Mark Crusaders into getting lost in the Everfree Forest, knowing her friends will ask her to help save them, so she is able to use the Death Note again away from L's bugs.
L then introduces herself to Twilight in person and drops hints that she knows she's Kira. Later that day, Twilight creates a situation with the Death Note in which Rarity holds Pinkie Pie hostage while trying to prove Twilight is Kira, then ends up killing Pinkie Pie and then herself. Twilight exploits this to demand she be allowed to join L's team in order to avenge her friends' deaths, shocking even Byuk with her callousness.
The next day, Fluttershy, who has found her own Death Note, begins killing ponies who criticized Kira, and also kills Sweetie Belle for standing up against a mob that was harassing Colgate. Twilight is enraged as she feels her work is being tarnished, and soon is visited by Fluttershy and her shinigami, Mer, and Twilight decides to make use of her to get L's name. However, L notes the sudden contact between the two and finds evidence that Fluttershy is acting as Kira and arrests her. Twilight then sets up an elaborate plan in which she turns herself in to L and demands to be imprisoned, then gives up ownership of the notebook and loses her memories of being Kira. The Death Note is passed to the Apple family who are made to kill criminals, while Big Macintosh is separately told to kill innocent farmers. Twilight is eventually released as L comes to think she might not be Kira, and they soon start investigating the Apple family. L and Twilight execute a sting operation and discover Applejack with the Death Note. They track her down and subdue her, but Mer then forces Twilight to touch the notebook and restores her memories in front of the investigation team.
However, it's revealed Twilight planned on this and planted false evidence to make L erroneously conclude that Fluttershy was the real Kira all along and was working with Mer to frame Twilight. L tries another sting operation to prove Fluttershy is guilty, but Big Macintosh (who has obtained Shinigami eyes and discovered L's name) is able to kill her with a scrap of the notebook. Afterwards, Twilight suggests that Colgate take on the role of the new L.
The story ends on an unresolved note as the author decided not to continue it but indicated that the ending would have been different than in the original Death Note and Twilight would not have been defeated as easily.
Personality[]
In contrast to her canon self, this version of Twilight is manipulative, sadistic, and murderous, believing her actions are making Equestria a better place and that sacrifices must be made to accomplish this. She is even willing to coldly manipulate and murder her best friends in order to avoid being caught, though she briefly shows remorse for this. She shows no mercy toward criminals, as she even targets ponies who haven't committed any serious crimes but have a lifelong history of minor offenses. She is also hypocritical as she condemns Fluttershy for killing innocents, including Sweetie Belle, when Twilight has killed innocents herself, and targeted a news reporter who was not much older.
However, during her amnesiac period Twilight is genuinely friendly, supportive of her friends, and acts the same as her canon self, which leads one to wonder if the canon Twilight could have gone down this path.
