“ | For millennia, the immortal alicorns ruled over Equestria. Through their magic powers and wisdom gained from uncountable experiences and years of life, they secured harmony for Equestria, and let the little ponies live out their lives, freely and without care for the dangers in the world. However, as this has continued, so has Equestria's dependence on the princesses. With their disappearance, Equestria has been left rudderless. But some still believe. Some still believe that they are still around, and they will return, one day, and lead Equestria boldly onwards. All of these rumours, theories, hypotheses and delusions has come to rest upon the newest Princess of Equestria and now the Celestial Regent, Twilight Sparkle.
The corpse of what was once the Home of Ponykind, the birthplace of the Magic of Friendship, held together by fear, nostalgia and a virulent hatred for all perceived enemies of Celestia and her little ponies, the sole goal of the Celestial Cult is to hasten the return of the alicorns to Equestria. To this end, the Regent and her supporters believe in mobilizing all the resources of Equestria towards hastening her return, hoping that she will return when the Regent and her ponies have learned enough friendship lessons and proven that they are worthy of her grace. Orders have been given to systematically cleanse all opposition to their vision of Equestria in general and Celestia in particular, enforced friendship amongst everyone and the construction of grand monuments to 'friendship', 'harmony' or Celestia. Their system of surveillance and of extreme punishment is inspired, some would even dare say copied from a fringe group in New Mareland, and the submission of the ponies from the worst of literature. Yet, it is unclear how it can perpetuate itself. For every day that goes without Celesta returning, the cult, its supporters and even the Regent herself grows more desperate. Soon, they fear, there will not be an Equestria for Celestia to return to. |

~ Description of the Celestial Cult |
Twilight Sparkle is one of the playable characters in My Little Pony: Equestria at War, one of the most popular mods for Hearts of Iron IV.
Her story was added to the game with the April Fools Update 2022, as a result of collaboration with the developers of another popular mod, The New Order: Last Days of Europe.
It starts 7 years after the start of the original series, when the princesses suddenly disappear from Equestria and the reign is temporarily handed over to Twilight as the only princess. But she fails, and Equestria begins to disintegrate. Twilight realizes that she has let her teacher down and goes mad because of it, proclaims the cult of Celestia and begins the mass repressions against separatists and insurgents. And as time goes on, her regime becomes more repressive and madder until the clock reaches midnight.
Before the collapse of Equestria[]
Twilight Sparkle was born in 981 ALB in Canterlot, into an aristocratic unicorns family. She became interested in magic from early childhood, after her first visit to Summer Sun Celebration. Her parents, Twilight Velvet and Night Light, were able to get her into the Princess Celestia's School for the Gifted Unicorns. She passed the entrance exam thanks to the Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom and made a new friend and assistant, the little dragon named Spike.
When she came of age, Princess Celestia sent her to Ponyville to study Friendship. After Twilight moved there, the Nightmare Moon returned to Equestria and plunged the world into eternal night. But Twilight and her new friends, five ponies from Ponyville, defeated the Nightmare Moon by Elements of Harmony. Twilight stayed in Ponyville to perform Celestia's order and research the friendship. After a year of studying, she gained enough strength to fix a dangerous spell by Star Swirl the Bearded, and after she did so, Celestia made her alicorn and Princess of Friendship.
As the new royal, Twilight took part in the political life of Equestria, fighting against dangerous villains several times and gaining popularity among the nobility and the simple ponies. But when Princess Celestia and Princess Luna suddenly disappeared in February 1007, she was faced with the fact that nobles and regional officials did not recognize her authority and did not consider her worthy to take the place of the diarchy. The political crisis led to the rapid collapse of the country and the outbreak of Civil War, when the Center retained power only over the small piece of land.
Canterlot Regency[]
When Twilight realized that Equestria was collapsed and the regional governments refuse to obey Canterlot, she stars to go crazy with despair and guilt. She decided to bring order to the country with an iron hoof and punish everypony who don't want to be a friend. She proclaimed the Holy Canterlot Regency and the Celestial Cult which became the official ideology of new order.
Her first goal was to win the Civil War and reunite the country to establish this ideology in all Equestrian lands. The largest opposition political movements of the Civil War were:
- Unicornian Sisterhood, the radical right organization from Northwest Equestria ruled by Gutriosa, which advocating for the racial superiority of unicorns over other types of ponies. The capital of the political movement was Tall Tale in Coltfoalnia.
- Union of Equestrian Socialist Republics, or just UESR, ruled by young socialist Valery Stablein who escaped from Stalliongrad by a hijacked warship in protest against the authorities of the party nomenclature in the Republic. When the Regency started, Stablein had the radio station in Detrot to send messages to all Equestria to make ponies protest against the mad princess. But the effect of his messages was more than he thought, and literally all Northeast Equestria expeled Regent's officials and formed a regional soviet. Stablein became a leader of new state and started the fight against Twilight. The capital of UESR was Manehattan.
- Equinist Republic of Equestria ruled by Octavia Melody, or Shostavia, from the Equinist Association of Equestria. The EAE was a secret organization of poets and writers of Southeast Equestria based in Baltimare, which adherented of the ideology of utopian socialism. Octavia moved to Baltimare from Ponyville when Twilight become the state leader. When the Regency started, she was already one of the most influential ponies in the organisation, and she was elected as prime Minister of the new democratic republic. The capital of ERE was Baltimare.
- Princessdom of Equestria ruled by princess Platinum II, the fake unicorn who declared herself the direct heir of the old kings of Unicornia. Platinum used the rock horn to make her subjects think that she is unicorn, but actually she is earth pony. The capital of the Princessdom was Rockville.
Twilight created a strong army, fanatically devoted to her personally and the missing princesses, and launched an offensive against her enemies. When army captured the Tall Tale and Vanhoover, Unicornian Sisterhood was destroyed. All of its leaders were killed and its supporters imprisoned in concentration camps. Earlier, the Regent personally killed Rarity, who doubted her mental health, but the killed pony turned out to be a changeling, and real Rarity was the same pony as Gutriosa, the Sisterhood's leader.
Thousands of Communists from UESR were killed by Regent's secret police when Northeast Equestria was occupied. When Baltimare was captured by the Regency, the army staged a massacre in the city and kill more than two hundred thousand ponies. A lot of towns in Southern Equestria were burned down because of their support for the Platinum, and almost three hundred thousand ponies were killed. Twilight did not try to stop it in any way, on the contrary, she believed that she was doing everything right, and all traitors should be destroyed.
After winning the Civil War, the Regency established the repressive laws over all Equestria. The Government create the special death squads named Friendship Brigades, which had the right to kill anypony they deemed dissident. The Celestial Cult became a mandatory religion for all Equestrian citizens, and the rejection of the worship of statues and portraits of the missing diarchy carried the death penalty. The state borders were closed, and anypony who tried to cross them was killed on the spot. All ties with other countries, even with former allies, were terminated. Any, even the most minor offense, was followed by enforced disappearance and oblivion. A lot of pony were "disappeared" everyday because of their "crimes".
The Friendship Diary of Main Six was rewritten to comply with the new state ideology. Quotes from the new Diary were taught in schools as part of the Celestial Cult. The meaning of the Elements of Harmony has been changed:
- Honesty means that all the laws of the Regency must be strictly observed, and any violation of them entails severe punishment.
- Loyalty means absolute devotion to the Regent and the Celestian Cult.
- Generosity means being ready to give all your property to the state if the Regent orders it to be done.
- Laughter means you have to laugh at offensive racist jokes.
- Kindness means you must show mercy only to those who support the Regent and be merciless to all her enemies.
- Magic means the unlimited power of the Regent and her might.
The school curriculum was changed in accordance with the interests of the Regency, and all the old teachers were repressed. The new curriculum was based on fostering fanatical devotion to the Regent and the Celestian Cult, and also introduced more severe penalties for absenteeism of ideological classes (in fact, all of new classes). Even a minor delay was punishable by imprisonment or death penalty. The Cutie Mark Crusaders movement which arose as an initiative movement of foals in support of harmony was repurpose to state youth militarized association. The founders of the movement either fled the country with great difficulty or were killed.
To strengthen her power, Twilight recruited religious fanatics who worship Nightmoon and Daybreaker, and gave them the same authority as her Friendship Brigades. Children of the Moon and Servants of the Sun preached ideas about the power of the Alicorns and the Regent, and secretly killed everypony pointed out by informants of the secret police. Those who were not killed were sent to labor camps for "re-education". Many ponies worked in such camps to exhaustion, without any hope of release. When the Regency subjugated the Crystal Empire, hundreds of thousands of dissidents were sent to camps on the northern border of the state high in the mountains, where many died from the cold and poor conditions.
The Twilight's old friends tried to stop this madness, but all of them were killed. Rainbow Dash tried to save Daring Do from being shot and sayed Twilight that she can't kill ponies just because she doesn't like them. Twilight gave the order to shot Rainbow with other traitors. Pinkie Pie was put in a barrel and dumped into the mouth of a volcano. Fluttershy was turned into a tree because of her disobedience. Applejack was killed along with other potentially disloyal ponies, and the Regent's servants delivered to their mistress the hat of killing friend. But Twilight couldn't even remember her name.
Mass purges in Severiana[]
The Severiana was one of the Equestrian provinces before the 995 ALB when it proclaimed the independence by Winter Socialist Revolution. The Stalliongrad Republic was not recognized by other countries of Equus, but it was strong enough to compete with Equestria industrially. Ruled by Communist Party, Stalliongrad rapidly developed industry and agriculture and spread communist propaganda across the continent.
Equestria did not dare to war against Stalliongrad because Celestia was worried about the amount of blood that would have to be shed for the victory over the Communists. But when the Holy Regency was strengthened, Twilight announced her intention to return these lands by military means and destroy the communist experiment.
After Stalliongrad fell, the Regent's army and secret police started to mass killings of communists and sympathizers, and other ponies who was considered hostile, not only in the former republic territory, but also in the South Severiana which was always controlled by Equestria. Mass repressions led to extermination of one and a half million ponies (almost fifteen percent of the population of Severiana).
Changeling genocide[]
Queen Chrysalis, the leader of the changeling nation, has been preparing a plan for attack on Equestria for a long time, and she had already attacked Canterlot in 1002, but failed. But now the militarized nation was ready to attack and take over the country weakened by the civil war. Twilight understood this and mobilized the entire population of the Regency, and instead of waiting for the changeling attack, attacked first.
After Vesalipolis was captured by the Regent's army and Chrysalis was killed, the population of the occupied changeling lands was subjected to genocide. By Twilight's order, thousands of queens (female insects capable of laying eggs) were killed because of their magic skills, and more than three million of drones were exterminate as socially dangerous element. About nine percent of changelings was killed and the damage done to the demographics of the nation led to rapid depopulation.
The End of Regency[]
After the Deadline Clock reaches its final point, Twilight will finally transform into Midnight and proclaim herself the Eternal Regent. But ironically, she dies just a few days later, when she tried to call for her friend Spike, only to find that she was all alone in her castle, and Spike had been executed a long time ago. She will try to get the book from the top shelf by herself, but fall down the stairs and break her neck, after which she will die, since no one will come to her aid, because everypony's afraid to go near a mad Regent.
After the Regent's death, the country is plunged into anarchy, but then the Princesses returned and it turns out that they just went on vacation to Zebrica and the note was accidentally thrown in the trash by the servants. The Diarchy was restored and the Princesses once again began to rule the crippled country.
Personality[]
Before the collapse of Equestria, Twilight was smart and friendly, but extremely demanding of herself. She suffered from Excellent Person Syndrome, and genuinely believed that she was obligated to do everything perfectly and couldn't afford to make mistakes like the Princess of Friendship. She's had breakdowns before, but usually they involved simple things and didn't lead to major tragedies.
But when she realized that it was her fault that Equestria was dying, her psyche couldn't take it. Her madness was driven by the obsession that she had failed the Princess and must do everything in her power to right the wrong. Twilight has turned into a paranoid and ruthless tyrant, genuinely convinced of her own rightness. She didn't consider killing one or even a few hundred thousand ponies a big deal to accomplish her goal, and the longer the Princesses were gone, the more Twilight lost touch with reality until she fell into premature dementia and died.
