“ | I got your message. Bet you feel REAL proud of yourself, don't you? You just pop in behind my back, LECTURING me when I've been here longer than you ever were... But you're in no position to talk. You were never here except to tell me how much I was screwing up. You're a coward. You ran away from your problems. You gave up your title as scientist. You ran to the Royal Guard and tried to act like you were never here in the first place. But I'm not like you. I'll NEVER stop trying. I'll NEVER stop caring. As long as I have my promise... I'll keep living. | „ |
~ Undyne insulting Sans via video recording. |
Undyne is the secondary antagonist of the Undertale fan web-comic Inverted Fate, created by Dorked.
She serves as a cameo in the Ruins Arc, the overarching antagonist of the Snowdin and Waterfall Arcs, the main antagonist of the Hotland and CORE Arcs, a minor character in the New Home + Loose Ends Arc. and a supporting character in the True Lab and Happy Ending...? Arcs.
She is the Royal Scientist and technically rules the Underground for three years due to Queen Toriel hiding in her castle, away from the public. While not exactly evil, she is very extreme and her acts are questionable. She has a gigantic mecha known as the Determinator that she uses to kill Frisk. She is the best friend of Papyrus and Frisk's former archenemy.
She was voiced by Cellochicita.
Personality[]
Undyne is even more loud, agressive and over-the-top then in Undertale. She stubbornly refuses to give up no matter what, and loves monsterkind and is determined to make them see the Sun again, even if it risks her reputation and happiness. However, she slowly became more and more blindly desperant over the years.
She always makes cheesy anime speeches, invents wacky robots and deadly robots just for fun. She loves her mad scientist role, as it can make her anime dreams come true.
She cherishes every friend and companion that it becomes ridiculous, especially Papyrus. Like in the original timeline, she has a huge crush on Alphys, even if a rift was torn between them because of Undyne.
Undyne's views on humanity are a strong and unhealthy driving force that some monsters have questioned if her heart is into it. She insists that everything is fine despite this.
Besides, if she won't take the last human SOUL, someone will have to. And Toriel went through enough hell already.
History[]
Backstory[]
Undyne grew up in Forgespring, deep in the heart of Waterfall. From a young age, she heard about the Waterfall Incident caused by the Integrity SOUL. She began to question, even as a kid, why the Queen and the Royal Guard sought to protect humans. However, knowing that the Mage was one of the three people who stopped the Integrity SOUL, while being a human himself, left her in weird emotional crossroads.
When she was only nine, her life would change forever. When the Royal Scientist by the name of W.D. Gaster was about to unveil a new invention, disaster struck. There was no fanfare, leaving a dissapointed Undyne to return with her class to school. After school, she stumbled upon Sans, in a labcoat. Mistaking him for his now-deceased father, she began asking tons of questions and became fascinated with science. She became the apprentice of Sans, the now-Royal Scientist. One day, he told Undyne to never give up, although he already had. When she asked what really happened to Dr. Gaster, Sans merely went with her to a busted up machine he'd draped in cloth. No further questions were needed. The only answers were from three, gray monsters.
Eventually, Sans quit as the Royal Scientist, leaving the position unoccupied. Sans began training to be a Royal Guard, while Undyne became the babysitter of his younger brother, Papyrus. The two quickly became friends, with Undyne's over-the-top behaviour inspiring the young skeleton.
Eventually, Undyne began creating a holographic sky over Snowdin Town. She has done it without protective gear, with an explosion almost injuring her face. During this, she fell to her death, but suddenly, she was back in Snowdin Town. She finished the holographic sky yet again, and Queen Toriel was so impressed that she appointed Undyne as the Royal Scientist. Undyne later realised she can SAVE. She never did a RESET, aiming to do it only for the good of monsters, not her own.
Undyne would pour her heart and SOUL to improve the lives of monsters. She met Alphys, a Royal Guard trainee moving up the ranks alongside Sans. The two quickly began friends (and had a crush on eachother) due to their love for anime, video games, science and history. She also met a ghost. While she didn't exactly get along with him, the admiration of Alphys coupled with the desire to make dreams come true led her to creating a new body for him, although it had anti-human features if the worst ever happened. Under the promise that the ghost will not leave his friends and family behind, the ghost became Mettaton and had Napstablook and Shyren as members of his band. She also created a body for the Mad Dummy.
Undyne eventually tried to break the Barrier through science. She made a promise to herself after this. Papyrus was so inspired that he camped under the Lab under Undyne finally let him be her apprentice. The two began experimenting on DETERMINATION, with Papyrus experimenting on a flower and Undyne creating a gigantic mecha known as the Determinator.
Undyne eventually injected DT into comatose monsters and possibly herself, as implied by Sans. This took a physical toll on her, and she bandaged up the results with "tools and wires" in a way that is unknown for now.
Three years before the events of the webcomic, she discovered the tapes left by Asriel and Chara. Enraged by this, she thought Chara was a manipulative traitor that caused Asriel's death. Despite Papyrus' protests, she played the tapes to the entire kingdom. The majority changed their view on Chara from a tragic figure to a demon that stole their prince away. This, and memories of the Waterfall Incident forced the Royal Guard to be more aggresive on humans, or at least those beyond Snowdin. Queen Toriel never left the castle after this, disgusted and heartbroken by her people. The comatose monsters awakened, and like in the original timeline, amalgamated.
Sans eventually became outraged as he thought Undyne showed Papyrus too much cruelty. Mettaton and Alphys were forced to hide their love for humanity.
Undyne eventually decided that she would be the one to tear away the SOUL of the next human that falls here, that she would keep her promise.
Ruins Arc[]
Undyne makes a quick cameo when Napstablook mentions that some monsters will want to hurt Frisk.
Snowdin Arc[]
When Frisk barely enters Snowdin, they see a camera hidden in a bush and covered with a drawing. They uncovered the camera and Undyne began to know a human is in the Underground. She called Papyrus later, but although he tried to give Frisk a chance, he angered Undyne in the process and she hung up on him.
After Frisk and Papyrus reached a training device, it suddenly tried to attack with flamethrowers, spears, and a cannon. Sans quickly hacked the machine. Sans called Undyne and the two got into a heated argument. She refused to back down despite knowing that Frisk's death will badly hurt Papyrus.
After Frisk stayed at Papyrus' house, a MTT broadcast revealed that a human is in the Underground to every monster, thanks to Snowdrake, Chilldrake and an Icecap, who run all the way to Hotland after being attacked by the humans "killer death pellets". Undyne showed photographic proof of Frisk, making the situation even worse.
Waterfall Arc[]
Undyne made her first true on-screen appearance shortly after the fight with Alphys, enraged that Frisk defeated her.
Hotland Arc[]
As soon as Frisk and Papyrus entered the Lab, they were attacked by Undyne, but it was mostly for the show. She tried and failed to reason with Papyrus that Frisk has to be killed. After bickering with Frisk, Undyne fought the two, and Papyrus eventually mentioned that Frisk has to go on trial (even if it is just Mettaton's show and not a real trial). The fight itself was also mostly for the show, until Mettaton stopped the fight and revealed that she'd signed a contract which allowed Mettaton to have Frisk on all his shows before Undyne can kill them. Reluctantly, she allowed Frisk and Papyrus go, but made sure to make the human's life a living hell.
She modified Hotland's puzzles to a dangerous degree while intergrating DT scanners to make them activate in a human's presence. Spikes, electricity fences, dangerous air turbines and many others were scattered around Hotland. Undyne was noting that Frisk was loading during one of the puzzles. Undyne and Mettaton later did an over-the-top Sailor Moon parody. Though she first bickered with her role as "the Masked Tuxedo", she soon completely deviated from the script and became more aggresive. Frisk and Papyrus started dodging and mocking her attacks. Angry, she activated a trap door that dropped the duo on onto a giant conveyor loop with four basketball hoops, designed to make Frisk vomit four times consecutively. She didn't want Papyrus to get trapped, but he did due to Frisk's jetpack disabling and if Mettaton did it, he would be trapped as well, with Undyne. While Frisk eventually got out using dog residue, their hatred for Undyne grew after this.
She later appears as part of the Battle of the Ages! tournament, an obvious anime parody. She grows more and more irritated after Frisk and Papyrus easily defeat Glyde and So Sorry, and finally reaches her limit when Frisk throws Sans' Pet Rock at her cheek. In the final round, the duo had to face Undyne and Mettaton. Mettaton and Papyrus played with her ego while Undyne gave it her all. While charging her special attack, the Annoying Dog came on the stage and Frisk flung them directly at Undyne's face. While distracted, Papyrus does a dramatic anime attack on Mettaton who, despite the clear lack of damage, flew straight at Undyne and out of the ring. Undyne obviously knew that Mettaton was faking being defeated and the two quickly chased Frisk and Papyrus while the two were escaping to an elevator. After the two escaped, Undyne was angry at Mettaton for putting Papyrus in danger, while the robot pointed out that she did the same.
She appeared on a special broadcast later. She tried to reassure the masses about what transpired and her desire to fulfill her promise. However, Mettaton showcased footage and questioned her actions, emphasizing the dangers her puzzles have brought. To make it worse, some guest appeared like Monster Kid, who found themselves torn between their idolization of Undyne and friendship with Frisk. Another one was Bassiere von Dohj III, who raised concerns for Alphys' safety and her convictions. And Gerson resented the vicious cycle surrounding humans in the Underground and the likelihood of it continuing on the surface. And to add to it, Gerson challenged Undyne's convictions, seeing her and the convictions as reckless, while the Royal Scientist argued that they are worth it and Queen Toriel needed her to fulfill her promise, because if Undyne won't do it, the Queen would have to. She also blamed all the suffering and hardships, not only on humanity but on Frisk, while nearly snapping. After nearly recovering after Gerson, more pressure was brought on Undyne when Napstablook asked if she was really happy. So many points flew at her from every side that she finally snapped and told Mettaton to stop the broadcast. When Prime-Time Turnabout, Frisk's trial, finally came, she recovered in time, being the prosecution.
The Snowdin Trio (Snowdrake, Chilldrake and an Icecap) were the first witnesses and have brought flimsy evidence, right down to accusing Frisk of leaving a bloody crime scene when not only do monsters leave dust, but there's no way the human would get there before them.
That and the bullying of Snowdin's Snowman cast doubt on their credibility, but it became even clearer when the next witness, the Snowman, revealed that it wasn't Frisk who attacked them, but someone known as Flowey the Flower, which enraged Undyne, since Papyrus never told her that the flower woke up. Sans brought more proof to back this up, and Undyne, angry, brought the next witness.
The next witness as Bassiere von Dohj III, who mistakenly believed this was a real court and not a show. Dohj, however, blamed Papyrus instead of Frisk, accusing him of treason. Undyne had to step in defence of Papyrus, but Dohj brought so many solid proof that all seemed lost, until Undyne got an idea by accusing Dohj of not making Papyrus look cool enough. This led to Undyne, Papyrus, Frisk, Mettaton and Sans making unrealistic, stupid and borderline insane logic to poke hole and hole into Dohj's testimony until she snapped.
The next witness was Sans, who delivered more testimony against the talking flower. Undyne was more and more stressed after Sans casted doubt on her actions multiple times, even pointing out that the Queen never wanted a human casualty. That, combined with Papyrus' refusal to come clean about Flowey and his plans left Undyne both hurt and betrayed, and Papyrus trying to talk to her and Mettaton pulling a bluff of a plot twist (Frisk has an evil clone from an alternative dimension that was responsible for all their crimes) was no use.
CORE Arc[]
The moment Frisk entered the CORE, she closed the door and set up a force field, leaving Papyrus unable to join the human. She began taunting the human, even though their remarks only angered the already unstable fish. She rigged the CORE with plenty aggresive robots and dangerous puzzles, including a colored-tile maze provided by Alphys, a pit of invisible platforms and electricity generators, a spinning tile maze, and areas eqquiped to look like different regions of the Underground with more dangerous traps.
While Mad Dummy possessed the entire CORE and the robots at the end of each Season Area, Undyne left mocking messages. She also cut Frisk's CODAC to make contact to the outside world, trying to keep them in isolation. After Papyrus tried to reach Frisk through the phone, he also tried to reason with Undyne, but she wouldn't back down and broke her phone. She also encouraged the Mad Dummy and provived them with a new form known as Mad Mew Mew. After Mad Mew Mew failed to defeat Frisk, she allowed Undyne to know that Chara is inside Frisk's SOUL, and she decided to use her mecha, the Determinator.
After Mettaton SPIRAL failed to defeat Frisk and revealed his true intentions to help Frisk escaped the CORE, the Determinator was finally brought into action. Undyne revealed that the SAVE Points are hers, and that she knows about Frisk's ability to SAVE, LOAD and RESET. Undyne, using her own DETERMINATION and the bonus from the Determinator, plans to have her DETERMINATION overpower the one of Frisk, so she can kill them for good. During the battle, with Mettaton's help, Papyrus informs Frisk about their phone's charge beam, before Undyne cuts him off.
When Frisk reloads after their third death, Undyne points out the human's DETERMINATION and reveals that she knows Chara is in there. This knowledge and the damage the Determinator sustained is enough for Undyne to pull her mecha into Overdrive Mode, pushing the Determinator to its limits. Each time Frisk died, their grasp on the SAVE file was slowly receded, while Undyne was coming closer and closer to gaining it. After it turns out that the Determinator won't hold out for much longer, Frisk saves Undyne, or she would die.
Even after being rescued, Undyne tried to kill the human. With her lab coat torn away, her badly scarren arms were shown. Even after being spared, Undyne tries to fight, until Frisk finally hits Undyne and deals 999999 damage. Due to Undyne's DETERMINATION, she begins melting. Mettaton and Papyrus arrive straight after the blow. Mettaton tries to save Undyne, and touches her, which causes the two to melt into an Amalgamate. Frisk, blaming themselves, escape to the New Home using their jetpack while Papyrus watches while crying. Papyrus eventually chooses to follow Frisk, still believing in them.
After a "fight" with Sans (Frisk was the actual boss fight), Frisk has a change of heart and reloads to their fight before the Determinator. Undyne, now more angry than ever before, goes all out and sets the Determinator into Overdrive Mode since the very beginning. After Frisk tries to save Undyne yet again, the Determinator smashes their jetpack, leaving them to fall to their death. Suddenly, Papyrus saves them, and Mettaton starts destroying Undyne's attacks before they can hit Frisk.
The Determinator is destroyed yet again, and Undyne still tries to kill Frisk. Even after Papyrus blocks Frisk and takes damage himself, Undyne tries to kill Frisk. Meanwhile, Mettaton has been filming the whole thing and suddenly, the Snowman, the Snowdin Trio, the Dogi, Jerry, the Ruins Bullies, Muffet, Burgerpants, Gerson, Dohj, Bratty, Catty and Asgore all tell Undyne to leave Frisk alone. If this wasn't enough, Alphys herself finally stands up and tells Undyne that what she's doing is wrong. Undyne finally has enough, drops her spear, and runs away.
New Home + Loose Ends Arc[]
Undyne is mentioned one final time by Papyrus moments before he and the human fight Queen Toriel.
After Frisk "defeats" Toriel, they and Papyrus go to the True Lab on Flowey's orders. Mettaton, meanwhile, tries to confront Undyne, but she tells him to go. Papyrus and Frisk try to enter the Lab. but it turns out Undyne locked them out and hacked Papyrus' devices. It's also shown that due to his fusion with Undyne in the past timeline, Mettaton now remembers the RESETs. When Mad Mew Mew crashed Mettaton's special performance, she retorted towards her cousin for humiliating Undyne. Mettaton said it was the only way to get her to stop, as nothing else worked. Frisk also pointed out if Mad Mew Mew really cared for Undyne she should find her right now. Undyne made one final post that was supposed to be for Frisk, saying, "You win." This made Frisk, Papyrus (who already made his way to the True Lab), Alphys and Mettaton to head to the True Lab to find her.
True Lab Arc[]
Undyne had sabotaged the elevator to the Power Room in the True Lab to shut herself from everyone. With reading all 29 lab entries in the True Lab, Frisk and Alphys learned of Undyne's experiments with the monsters that have "fallen down", leading to the outcome of the formation of the Amalgamates. They also found recordings from the terminal and discovered so many shocking things. Frisk and the others used lures for the Mechamalgamates to smash the door down to open the way forward to Undyne.
Undyne, defeated and tired, was very remorseful for her actions. Mettaton expressed his apology for exposition on her for protecting Frisk, realizing he took it too far. Undyne scoffed, knowing the damage had been done. She began to apologize to everyone. She apologized to Mad Mew Mew for using her to physically and verbally vent her frustrations, much to Mad Mew Mew clarifying how she LIKED the abuse, feeling the adrenaline. Undyne also apologized to Mettaton for forcing him into becoming a human annihilator. She apologized to Alphys for scaring her from her actions. She even apologizing for dragging Papyrus into this mess when he was 15. And with that, she decided to give up for good. However, Frisk retaliated to not do this to herself, even if Monstrosity's hopes will still live on. Everyone assured Undyne that she couldn't undo her mistakes, but she could learn from them, which Mettaton pointed out to Chara that they ought to keep that in mind, which Undyne also apologized to them for ruining their (after)life, to which Chara objects that the verdict was already out. When she noticed the Mechamalgamates, she realized that she missed out on making them remember who they really were. At that same time, Sans appeared, to which he said there would be a whole lot more she would be missing. He also came to apologize to Undyne. He apologized for shaming her instead of supporting her and focusing only on what she did was bad, and not once what she did was right. Undyne accepted his apology, reconciling her friendship with Sans. Undyne confirmed to Frisk that an apology wouldn't even make up for what she did to them, and won't ask for their forgiveness or to be her friend, but thanked for being the better friend for Papyrus than she was. She then started to return the Mechamalgamates to their families, with Alphys accompanying her and Mad Mew Mew supporting her. Papyrus mentions an "AUDIBLE WINK" for them to have a good time and not hold back for their sakes, much to Undyne and Mad Mew Mew's embarrassment, but Alphys blushed, not complaining about it, happily.
Victory Arc[]
In Chapter 61, An Angel's Promise, Undyne had finished returning the Mechamalgamates to their families and met up at the Barrier with Frisk, Papyrus, and everyone else. She apologized to Toriel for not considering the consequences of her actions of revealing the tapes to the public and framing Chara, realizing how much Toriel loved them. Toriel understood, knowing that Undyne was young when she did this, relieved she was alive. Undyne was happy too, reassuring Toriel that it could've been much worse (referring to her amalgamation with Mettaton).
When Mad Mew Mew used her SOUL-Split to reveal Chara, everyone knew that they were still around. But that's when Flowey used his Omega Vines to capture everyone, holding them hostage. During the one-sided battle, Undyne helped in protecting Frisk from harm, despite the situation she and the others were in. Eventually, when Papyrus surrendered himself and his SOUL so that Frisk could live, Undyne was absorbed by Flowey transforming back into Asriel and becoming a part of him, leaving her Fate in Frisk and Chara's hands for the outcome of the Final Battle...
Trivia[]
- She's 22 years old.
- The abs on the Determinator were Papyrus' idea.
- Her robot eye shoots lasers.
- She always wears long sleeves and gloves, and hasn't been seen without them for years..
