To continue my current onslaught of CM Proposals, I've decided to choose my first ever candidate I've ever proposed on any CM/PE proposing site! So, without further ado, let's look at Carlo Luciano! This one's gonna be a wild one for sure...
What's The Work?[]
Ace Attorney: Conflict of Interest is an Ace Attorney fan game made by Ropfa. The full game was released on July 29, 2016. The story takes place in an alternate universe set after the events of Apollo Justice. The story focuses on Phoenix returning to the world of law alongside his old assistant Maya as they tackle cases related to the Rivales family, a mob group. (Straight from my original proposal, I know.)
Who is He and What Has He Done?[]
Carlo Luciano, the one-eyed murderous assassin started off his career as an assassin for the Rivales family. Throughout his career, he was ordered by Michael Rivales to kill 7 people on the hitlist, doing his end of his deeds for pure fun. Two notable victims were Sandra Watters and Charles Locke. Sarah Keyes revealed that Carlo Luciano made no hesitation to shoot Charles Locke in front of her when she was a child, who traumatized her and made her memories mixed up. Luciano was also feared by the members of the mob for being relentless and torturous to those who cross him, to the point where they beg to be killed by him.
During his career as an assassin, he teamed up with Fransisco Mendirez to wipe out the Cadaverinis, including Bruto Cadaverini their boss. After Luciano was caught, Michael Rivales grew furious as he didn't want a gang war to happen. He ordered his nephew Mendirez to kill him, but he had other plans. Carlo Luciano, Fransisco Mendirez, Nathen Togamera, and Kristoph Gavin all conspired in a plan to fake Luciano's death and get Mendirez off the hook for it. Togamera forged fingerprints of an innocent man named Salim Kushari on the poison bottle that would be used as the "murder weapon" while Pearl Fey who was running away would be unwittingly set up as the phantom suspect behind the assassination plot. They switched Luciano with a dead body double and Mendirez was soon arrested. Eventually Salim Kushari was framed and sentenced to prison for a murder that never even happened. The case would later be known as the MN-6 Incident.
Luciano eventually adopted a new identity named "Morton Dreisan" and became a coroner for the police. In the process, he burned the body double's body so no one would suspect it being a fake.
Michael Rivales eventually found out that Luciano was alive in which Mendirez panicked. Fransisco Mendirez sent Sir Gallante out to kill Carlo Luciano and also eventually kill Michael Rivales... only Luciano survived. Furious at Mendirez's foolish attempt to have him killed out of cowardice, Carlo Luciano would adopt the identity of the leader of the Rivales Family under Mendirez's name so he can frame him for multiple other heinous crimes, and this is where the trash will start hitting the fan before blowing it up...
"Fransisco Mendirez" under the username "Ursamajor777" conspired with Togamera ("Stranger2Love") in order to help him get out of a sticky situation where Cody Hackins was able to hack into Stranger2Love's account which gave Walter Webb ("Bad Player") access to it. Togamera eventually killed Webb which initiated the investigation into the case.
Morton Dreisan met the protagonist Phoenix Wright and Maya as he was giving Mark Watters the autopsy report. That's when he started making morbid jokes about his death such as "You could say he lost his mind!" (Since he was shot in the head, get it?) along with treating the body as a specimen rather than a dead person (keep in mind he's doing this while maintaining his affable persona). The next day is when he initiated his part of the plan with Togamera. He lured Cody Hackins (who is still a minor at the time of this game) into the evidence room and without any hesitation or remorse, shot him three times in the back with Togamera's gun, killing him instantly. Dreisan then "panicked" and told Phoenix Wright that he discovered Hackin's body while also casually making some subtle jokes during Wright's investigation, showing that beneath the surface he doesn't actually care about what he did. He purposely left Togamera's gun in the evidence room and even left his account open in order to frame Togamera for the murder so he can get the death penalty for both murders. With Togamera betrayed by "Mendirez", he turned against Mendirez, just as planned by Luciano.
But Luciano wasn't done, knowing Maya Fey cared deeply about Pearl Fey, "Mendirez" threatened that if she tried to find Pearl, he'll make sure she'll never see her again. With this, he successfully provoked Maya into searching for Pearl more along with pressuring her to vent about it to the media. Maya Fey would go on to plan a reunion at the Fey Manor so Pearl can return. That's when "Mendirez" hired Raphael Donatello to kill Maya Fey with a sniper and coerced Meredith Fey to go along with it with her granddaughter Pearl Fey's life on the line. That's when he ordered Donatello to rat her out as the accomplice so he can turn on Mendirez for his "lack of honor". Although things didn't go according to plan, unexpectedly Maya Fey was shot by someone although he managed to get Raphael Donatello to "admit" that Mendirez called the hit on Maya. As a bonus, Phoenix Wright would begin to resent Mendirez over the incident which would make his final step of the plan much easier. During Wright's investigation, he "helped" out by analyzing the bullet trajectory, and you guessed it casually made jokes about the attempted assassination which earned him a couple of hard punches from Pearl Fey.
Luciano decided he also wasn't done with Sir Gallante, as a result he broke into jail and murdered two police officers before kidnapping Virgil Black from police custody. That's when he took him to his hideout and proceeded to stab him with a knife before suffocating him to death with a shovel, breaking it in half. Luciano buried his body for a month where it decomposed into an unrecognizable figure. A month later, Steven Jameson consulted with Fransisco Mendirez about Carlo Luciano along with the MN-6 Bottle used to "kill" Luciano before he was chased off by Gladys Porter. With Jameson alone, Luciano took his chance to beat him repeatedly with a shovel, forcing the police to identify him using his broken teeth. He buried him alongside Virgil Black which ended up getting Mendirez arrested. After the first trial, Luciano went on to chase down Porter before stabbing her with a knife and retrieving the bottle after finding out she had it. Luciano went out to try to frame an innocent young girl named Jane Hood by giving her the knife used for her murder. During Trucy's investigation, Dreisan gave her information into everyone's reaction to the MN-6 Incident. It's suggested that Dreisan felt that Trucy was on to him and planned to go after her if he wasn't caught.
After Fransisco Mendirez ratted Dreisan out as Luciano, he was called to the stand. Despite his best efforts to act innocent, Trucy noticed his scratched eye under his glasses. That's when Dreisan dropped his facade and turned sinister. He manipulated both Wright and Obadiah Williamson into proving that Mendirez was the mastermind behind the Gallante scheme so his revenge scheme would continue cementing itself against Mendirez. After a difficult battle of wits with Luciano, Wright managed to pin Luciano down as a viable suspect for Hackin's murder which caused him to joke about his dilemma and laugh like a maniac. But if you think the assassin is just going to do an Ace Attorney breakdown before the police arrests him, you'd be mistaken because this guy does not mess around. Instead of accepting his defeat, when Mark Watters tries to arrest him, he immediately turns around and start making jokes about Sandra Watter's death in attempt of provoking a reaction out of him. When he failed to do so, he grabbed a knife from his pocket, slashed his leg, and proceeded to steal his gun and hold him at gunpoint. Before he made his getaway, he decided to give Phoenix Wright a final goodbye by attempting to shoot him... only Mendirez had enough of Luciano's scheme. He immediately grabbed a hold of Luciano in resentemnt over what he did to him as Luciano tried to justify everything, he did due to Mendirez's own evilness. After Wright's plea that Mendirez doesn't need to go too far, Mendirez decided to spare Luciano and knock him out, putting an end to the assassin's scheme and putting him behind bars once and for all.
In the alternate route forever, Luciano managed to kill Mendirez before his own neck is snapped by the latter. What's worse is that in the actual bad ending, Luciano managed to succeed in his revenge scheme by having Mendirez executed and going on to kill Phoenix Wright, Obadiah Williamson, and pretty much... everyone else.
Heinous Standards[]
Carlo Luciano is one of the villains that obliterates the heinous standards of Ace Attorney. In story, his kill count rivals that of Sir Gallante and the indirect kill count of Fransisco Mendirez. However, what makes Carlo Luciano much worse is them is he lacks the redeeming qualities they have. Fransisco was at least somewhat remorseful to someone else, and Sir Gallante is murdering people because he wants to get rid of the mob. But Carlo Luciano? He's uterly remorseless and a cold-blooded mass murderer that doesn't care about the lives of others. His methods are so cruel that he managed to completely make someone's face unrecognizable along with stabbing someone before choking them with a shovel, and that's even taking into account that some of the deaths in Conflict of Interest were brutal. He even sets off a unique standard by literally shooting a minor to death without any sort of hesitation or remorse. He even goes on to make jokes about the people he killed and incidents he caused. That's not to mention his passing of the heinous standards doesn't stop at his killings. He purposely betrays multiple allies just to make them betray someone he hated, even giving Nathen Togamera the death penalty for a murder he committed. That's not to even mention the fact that his villainous defeat is downright horrendous. Going as so far to try to break Mark Watters by joking about his wife's murder just so he can grab his gun and force an escape and to top that all off he tried to shoot Phoenix Wright out of spite. Oh yeah, and he's one of the few villains in Ace Attorney to actually successfully kill Phoenix Wright and even the rest of the main cast (Trucy, Maya, you name it) if he's not caught, making him one of the most threatening and scary villains in Ace Attorney media.
Redeeming Qualities/Mitigating Factors[]
Carlo Luciano not only subverts his comedic qualities once his true identity is revealed, but completely recontextualized his dark humor jokes as someone who enjoys sadistically making fun of dead people and the incidents he causes. Other than that, Carlo Luciano has no other redeeming qualities that exists. He's quite literally a vile villain that has absolutely no sympathetic traits whatsoever as his actions completely destroys any excuse for a potential "tragedy" as all of the people he affected had nothing to do with Fransisco Mendirez's betrayal and were just pawns to satisfy his blood lusting scheme against him.
Verdict[]
Carlo Luciano is a vile assassin that has absolutely no regard for human life and would do anything to fulfill his desires whether it's to protect his identity or fulfill his sadistic tendencies. He's scary, threatening, evil, dishonorable, and malicious and completely sets the heinous standard of Conflict of Interest which is why he's a Complete Monster.
