My first ever CM proposal. This is from somebody who’s controversial but the character has nothing to do with how they are as a person.

What is the work?[]

Big Bad Bosses is a series of songs created by the gaming YouTuber The Completionist. One of those songs is Angel which features Sephiroth not taking his role in the planet’s destruction seriously until his mother steps in. This is reflected in the song's music video which actively show Jenova as a manipulative force behind Sephiroth who takes enjoyment in causing destruction and misery.

Who is she?[]

Jenova is the overarching protagonist of the song Angel. She is Sephiroth’s cold, manipulative, and sadistic mother who pushes him toward his destructive potential for her own amusement. She uses what little screen time she has to ensure the destruction of the planet in the most violent way possible by manipulating her son. It’s because of her influence that Sephiroth puts aside his goofy tendencies and focuses entirely on his catastrophic goals.

What has she done?[]

While we don't get a whole lot of info on this version of Jenova’s background, it’s most likely similar to her canon counterpart. She crash-landed on the planet on a meteor and proceeded to kill off the Cetra until the few survivors imprisoned her. She was then discovered thousands of years later by Shinra scientists who used her cells to create bio-engineered soldiers, the most powerful being Sephiroth.

By the time of the music video, Sephiroth has already decided that he wants to destroy the world and is taking steps to do so. However, he’s not taking it seriously at all. He seems more interested in partying, messing with the heroes, and just generally not putting a whole lot of effort into what is supposed to be his destiny. This all changes when his mother, Jenova, steps in. Darkening the tone of the music video, she tells off her son for “go[ing] soft” and pushes him to use all of his powers to achieve world destruction. Because of her influence, Sephiroth embraces his evil nature and slaughters the agents fighting him in cold blood. He then proceeds to gather an army of clones created by Jenova as well as all of the rest of the villains to help him kill all the rest of the heroes. Additionally, he also summons the Death Egg, the Moon from Majora’s Mask, and a Banzai Bill to assist his meteor in the destruction of the planet, causing the world to be destroyed in a much more violent way than he originally intended. Finally, it’s also implied that Jenova wants her son to destroy more worlds because of the line “This happens now, and again, and again, and again!”

Another thing to add is that Jenova very clearly displays a ruthless and sadistic personality throughout her limited screen time, especially through her expressions and body language. She has an evil grin on her face as she takes in the destruction her son is causing under her influence. Additionally, she's bored and disappointed when she first appears because she just found out that Sephiroth isn't focusing on destroying the world like she wants him to. By the time Sephiroth has reached the point of no return as the world has no hope of being saved by the heroes, Jenova physically can't contain her excitement and elation as she joyously sings about destroying more worlds and squirms in uproarious euphoria.

Mitigating factors?[]

The only major mitigating factor Jenova might have is that she possibly cares about Sephiroth as shown by how the contact info for him in her phone has the nickname “Sephy”. However, I’d argue that this isn’t strong enough evidence because nothing in her actual behavior and dialogue hints that she cares for her son beyond using him as a killing machine. She gets disappointed in him when he’s acting silly and only gets happy when he embraces his evil and starts focusing on destroying things. In fact, she possibly threatens Sephiroth when she warns him to “never falter again.”

There’s also the matter of her one comedic moment when she has a phone in her tank for some reason. This doesn’t undermine her heinousness for two reasons: 1) It’s very brief so it doesn’t stick to her that much and 2) it’s through that phone that she commits her most heinous actions by manipulating her son to do her bidding.

Heinous standards?[]

I’d say she definitely meets the heinous standards. While Sephiroth was already planning to destroy the world, Jenova’s influence not only caused him to focus on it more but also assured it would be destroyed in a much more heinous manner than he was planning to beforehand. It’s also possible that Sephiroth’s original method wouldn’t have worked because he wasn’t going all out, until Jenova pushed him to do so. It’s also implied that she’s the reason that Sephiroth started this campaign of destruction in the first place as he excitedly calls her to tell her what he’s been up to. Additionally, she has much less resources than Sephiroth as she is confined to a vat and we only see her making some clones of Sephiroth, so it’s hard to say exactly how powerful she is by herself. It’s also worth noting that while Sephiroth is way more powerful than Jenova, he’s still a pawn in her game as he does exactly what she wants.

Conclusion?[]

I personally would give a Yes to Jenova, but the rest is up to you
