~ Utsuro after regaining his memories

Utsuro is the main antagonist of the Korean Danganronpa fangame Danganronpa Another and the overarching antagonist of its sequel Super Danganronpa Another 2.

He starts off as the main protagonist of the story during Chapters 1-6 until he is revealed to be the Mastermind playing his own Killing Game, having erased his memories beforehand to become a heroic persona known as "Yuki Maeda".

He's revealed to be the one who set up the Killing Game as a recorded experiment for Junko Enoshima's Killing Game.

Personality[]

Utsuro is calm and emotionless all the time, never caring when someone insults or is trying to defeat him. He never shows any signs of happiness, sadness, remorse, sadism, anger, etc. The only person he showed care for was Akane Taira, but at the same time he was still willing to kill her if she went against his plans.

Due to his Divine Luck, everything always worked perfectly for him, which made him very depressed, even trying to kill himself several times, with it always failing due to his luck. Whenever he saw a person suffering, he would also use his luck to improve their lives, but he only did that for the thrill.

After meeting Junko Enoshima and becoming a Remnant of Despair, he became dedicated to creating a Killing Game as a test to help Junko Enoshima with her own future Killing Game, all because she was one of the few people on his life who managed to make Utsuro feel a emotion.

Biography[]

Background[]

Utsuro was born with an extremely powerful ability known as "Divine Luck". It was a reality-bending luck that would make everything work exactly like he wanted.

However, to him it was a curse, everything would work perfectly well for him, making him unsatisfied with life. He would sometimes go around and help people who needed it, sharing his luck to help them. He tried to kill himself several times, but due to his luck attending his "human survival instincts" it would always fail.

After meeting Junko Enoshima he felt a emotion for the first time and decided to help her, hoping he would feel more. He then started planning a Killing Game with the purpose of testing the A.I known as "Monokuma" and film all of it to Junko in order to make sure Junko's future Killing Game would work with no problems. Utsuro then relied on his luck so that a student named "Yuki Maeda" would be invited to Hope's Peak Academy and, after that, he disguised himself as Yuki Maeda in order to secretly join the same academy. Meanwhile the real Yuki Maeda was imprisoned somewhere.

Utsuro and his right-hand, Akane Taira (who joined due to her talent as the Ultimate Maid) spent three months "studying" inside Hope's Peak waiting for the Tragedy. During that time, Utsuro was completely anti-social, almost never interacting with anyone other than Akane Taira. After the Tragedy happened, Utsuro, Akane Taira and the other 13 students were rescued by Yamato Kisaragi and sent to the Kisaragi Foundation.

Yamato Kisaragi started to get suspicious of "Yuki Maeda" and Akane Taira, especially after catching them inside a private room. Later, the Kisaragi Foundation was attacked by Monokumas, killing all the workers and knocking out the 12 Hope's Peak students. Yamato Kisaragi and Mikako Kurokawa tried to redeem Utsuro and Akane, but it didn't work and they were both knocked out by the former.

Following that, the Kisaragi Foundation was modified by the Monokuma robots to look like Hope's Peak Academy and Alter Ego Monokuma was installed to oversee the Killing Game. Utsuro used the Memory Manipulator to erase the memories of all 15 students to make them think they had just joined Hope's Peak. He erased his own memories to make himself think he was "Yuki Maeda" but made it so he would remember his true identity upon being exposed to a lot of clues during the sixth class trial. He also erased Akane Taira's memories and made it so she would remember her true identity upon hearing the words "Ultimate Despair".

He trusted his own luck that he and Akane Taira would survive, put Monokuma in action and with that, the Killing Game began.

Chapters 1-5[]

During the prologue and the first five chapters, Utsuro genuinely believed that he was Yuki Maeda as his true memories were erased and manipulated. Throughout the game he was the heroic protagonist who would always guide others and help uncover the culprits in the class trials while trying to figure out a way to escape from the Killing Game with everyone.

While his memories were erased, his Divine Luck was still working and helped him on several occasions, such as when it made Tsurugi Kinjo survive getting shot in the head. Yuki Maeda would also sometimes get strange nightmares relating to his old personality, but never thought much about it.

Due to his previous actions as the mastermind who created the Killing Game, eleven participants ended up dying during it, either for being the victim of a murder or for being being found out and executed in a class trial.

Yuki managed to be one of the five last survivors along with Akane Taira, Teruya Otori, Rei Mekura and Tsurugi Kinjo. After the fifth class trial and Mikako’s death, Tsurugi woke up from his coma with his regained memories and told everyone that Akane Taira was the Mastermind. Akane was confused at first but after Tsurugi said the words “Ultimate Despair” Akane Taira regained all of her memories and confirmed that she was indeed the “Mastermind”, much to the surprise of everyone.

Chapter 6[]

Since Akane Taira regained her memories as a “Ultimate Despair External Agent”, she started to make the preparations for Utsuro to regain his memories as well. She spreaded clues all over the facility and told the last survivors that, if they figured out all the secrets about the Killing Game in a class trial, they would be able to escape. During the investigation, Yuki Maeda kept randomly gaining memories about how the Killing Game works due to the Memory Manipulator.

The class trial was successful for everyone and the four survivors were able to uncover most of the secrets behind the Killing Game. However, everything changed when Akane Taira revealed that she’s not the true Mastermind, and that the real Mastermind is one of the four Survivors, with his memories erased. Teruya said that the Mastermind most likely died at some point, but Akane rebuked it, saying that “their ability would allow them to survive”. Then everyone started talking about their lives to prove they’re not the Mastermind, and that was the breaking point for Yuki Maeda, he didn’t remember anything about his life, not even his own mother’s name. Yuki gets a painful headache as he slowly starts to regain his memories. After entering his mind space, Yuki is given two choices: Embrace Hope or Embrace Despair.

Regaining his memories[]

In the canon ending, Yuki Maeda, in his mind space, goes to the red door and embraces despair. Afterwards, he recovers all of his memories and his personality as Utsuro again, completely erasing his Yuki Maeda persona. Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya were surprised, they never expected that their friend who helped them throughout the game was the Mastermind.

Despite all those revelations, Teruya, Rei and Tsurugi pursued Hope and tried to make Utsuro “go back to normal”, and Utsuro decided to make them have a taste of despair. He puts Tsurugi Kinjo in a despairful state by revealing that his father, Yuu Kinjo, was the leader of the Ultimate Despair External Agents, having been brainwashed by Junko along with all of the other Police Officers, making Japan fall into anarchy. He also revealed that Yuu Kinjo ate the remains of Tsurugi’s best friend, Sasaki Kohel.

He then puts Rei Mekaru in a despairful state by revealing that her parents, who “abandoned” her when she was five years old, actually cared for her and, when they heard their daughter might be missing, they went to Junko Enoshima and became members of the Ultimate Despair. Lastly he put Teruya Otori in Despair by revealing that the source of all the money spent into creating the facility was from the Otori Mart and his father, who fell into despair when he heard that Teruya had died.

Ending[]

After the three were put in a despairful state, Utsuro ordered the Monokuma robots to kill them, but Akane objected and destroyed some of the robots, saying that he should spare them. Utusuro said he predicted that would happen and ordered Monokuma to kill Akane, however a mysterious voice was heard: It was the Alter Ego Kisaragi, who appeared on the computer instead of Alter Ego Monokuma.

Alter Ego Kisaragi managed to convince the three survivors that they should not give up hope and removed their despairful state. When the three were ready to fight Utsuro, a monokuma appeared and tried to attack Rei, but Akane went in front of her and got attacked instead, getting heavily injured. In his last moments, the Monokuma turned on the self-destruction switch, making it so that the entire island would be destroyed and drowned in 10 minutes.

With the help of Alter Ego Kisaragi, the three survivors were able to escape in a helicopter, but Utsuro decided to stay with the injured Akane Taira. During their last moments, Utsuro and Akane have a conversation about their actions and the reasons behind them. Utsuro’s last thought is if he could have lived a normal life had he not been born with Divine Luck. When the island collapsed and they were drowning, Utsuro passed down his Divine Luck to Akane Taira so that she would survive and finally died.
