William Afton is the main protagonist of Snonk's fanfic series, the Fnafverse.

He serves as the main protagonist of a burning shadow, the titular deuteragonist of my greatest creation, and the unseen overarching antagonist of both The Lonely and Freedom.

A brilliant, ambitious man who originally simply wanted to entertain people, Afton is manipulated by the Shadow into murdering children so he could discover the secrets of a human soul, losing everything he ever had along the way.

History[]

William Afton started off as a kind, normal man with a loving family who simply wanted to entertain people with animatronic mascots with the help of his business partner, Henry. However, he would meet a mysterious entity from the dark known as "the Shadow". He was manipulated with the powers of a human soul and the potential they have, and despite knowing it was morally wrong, decided to learn more about them.

He would create the Funtime animatronics to capture and contain children, one of those being a scrapped prototype of the Funtime Freddy animatronic that was discarded. Despite warning her to not go near them, his daughter Elizabeth ended up being murdered by the Funtimes after getting too close. The Shadow promised that, if they'll be given permission to enter the mind of Afton's youngest child, they will make sure they won't suffer the same fate as Elizabeth. It proceeded to torment them in their nightmares with horrifying versions of the animatronics, causing him to be afraid of them. At the same time, however, it manipulated Michael, Afton's oldest son, by claiming William hates him and that he needs to prove himself. This would cause Mike to accidentally kill his younger brother during an event known as The Bite of '83. This caused William to lose it for good, and send his remaining child on a suicide mission. Unbestknown to Afton, Elizabeth would possess the Circus Baby and be manipulated by Funtime Freddy, which caused her to kill Mike by scooping him.

With nothing left to lose, William started murdering children to continue his experiments. At one point, the Shadow would warn him that his first five victims are vengeful, and that he needs to destroy their robotic bodies to get rid of them. However, the ghosts would end up being freed from their forms and force Afton to enter the same suit he killed them with. This would end up a fatal mistake, as he would be painfully crushed by the suit and left to bleed out. Despite this, he wouldn't die.

Many years later, a rotten and constantly suffering Afton would be brought to Fazbear's Fright. He would try to kill the guard, who is implied to be Michael. After a few days, the building mysteriously catches on fire, implied to be Mike(?)'s doing. As William burns to death, the Shadow approaches him one last time. William looks at the being and realises that it is a purely evil monster who's been manipulating him all these years, before dying for the second and presumably final time.
