William Afton, also known as Springtrap or the Bunny, is the main antagonist of the 2023 fan animation Scooby Doo, Where Are You? In... SPRINGTRAPPED! by Eagan Tilghman, a crossover between the Scooby Doo franchise, Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, and the 1970 animated short film Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. He is the evil former business partner of Henry Emily, who seeks revenge due to being envious of the latter's success.

He was voiced by Daniel Kimball.

Biography[]

William Afton was the business partner of Henry Emily, the owner of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, with Afton presumably working at the restaurant as an entertainer and inventor. The two had a falling out and Afton left, but Emily went on to have great success with the restaurant. Jealous of his former partner's accomplishments, Afton used his patented "spring lock" suit design to make the restaurant's rabbit animatronic appear as a robot by day. At night, he would use the spring locks to pull away the metal mechanisms and don the costume himself, creating the ghostly Springtrap character to scare customers away from the business. The security guard, S.G. Kluger, was left dumbfounded, as he was unaware of a secret room that Afton would hide out in until he would come out as Springtrap.

One night, Scooby Doo and Mystery Incorporated arrive at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza to throw a birthday party for Scooby. Despite seeing the lights on and movement inside at first, they are surprised to find it closed. They get help from Kluger, and Velma finds half of a torn photo of Henry Emily. Meanwhile, Scooby and Shaggy go hunting for some pizza to eat, but are attacked by Springtrap. He chases them around the pizzaria, bumping into Velma during the chase and knocking her glasses off. As she searches the ground for them, she finds the other half of the torn photo.

Springtrap corners Scooby and Shaggy, but as he lunges to grab them, they duck down and make him crash into the wall behind them, exposing the secret room and knocking him out. Velma, Fred, and Daphne unmask Afton and expose him, congratulating each other for another mystery solved while Scooby attempts to scare them with the Fredbear costume.

This version of William Afton is one of the few versions of the character who isn't actually a serial killer, as it is made clear that his sole intention was to scare people away from Freddy Fazbear's. It's also made abundantly clear that nothing supernatural was actually going on at Freddy's, but Afton was just running around pretending to be a ghost, fitting with the nature of the original Scooby Doo series.
Afton is one of the few characters in the original version of the short film not to be voiced by an A.I. program but an actual voice actor. The film, while for the most part, is well-received, there is some controversy about the use of A.I. voice actors in the film, gaining some backlash from people in the voice acting industry (most notably the likes of Grey DeLisle, who does provide the current voice of Daphne). The creator of the film, Egan Tilgham, did however clarify that due to the restrictive budget of the short film, he could not hire other voice actors. He would later go on to say that he would do a re-edit of the film without the use of the A.I. voices and actual voice actors instead.
