William Afton is the main protagonist of Game Theory's "ULTIMATE" version of the Five Nights at Freddy's timeline, serving as the main protagonist of Parts 1 and 2, the main antagonist of Part 3 and the deuteragonist of Part 4.
The co-founder and co-owner of the entire Fazbear franchise, William Afton was a man that wanted to create life itself and entertain numerous children with his creations. However, after being filled with hate, tragedy and loss, he eventually devolved into a serial killer determined to bring back the family he lost and spite his best friend-turned-archenemy, Henry Emily.
Through voice clips, he was voiced by PJ Heywood. When giving his evil laugh, he is voiced by Tyler Mascola.
Biography[]
Part 1: The Ultimate Timeline[]
William was born during the Great Depression in Utah. He grew up visiting and watching Fredbear's Singing Show, a roadside attraction where an actual bear was trained to perform for customers. Amazed by what he's saw as a child, Afton spend the rest of his life trying to recreate what he saw in his childhood and spread that gift to children around the world so he could inspire them the same way he was as a child seeing Fredbear. He decided to use mascot suits to achieve this, and made suits of both Fredbear (made to be more cartoonish) and his original character, the yellow Bonnie the Bunny. He grew to become obsessed about the latter due to being his own, original creation.
While Fredbear's was successful, he was eventually beaten by a rival pizzeria, Chica's Party World, which used robots instead of suits. He was extremely envious yet filled with admiration towards their creator, Henry Emily, for actually making them come to life, something he couldn't do. This envy and admiration eventually turned into hatred once William realized he was ripped off via Nedd Bear, a direct copycat of Fredbear. After several years, Afton went bankrupt but was bailed out by Henry, something that just expanded his hatred of the man.
In 1979, Afton and Henry decided to merge their franchises into one Fredbear's Family Diner, with animatronic versions of the bear and rabbit. Alongside this, three new characters were introduced: Foxy the Pirate, Bonnie the Blue Bunny, and Freddy Fazbear. While Chica remained popular enough to stay on the band, the rest of her band mates were deemed as "mediocre" and left to wither away in backrooms. Eventually, Fredbear and (golden) Bonnie would become popular enough to support Fredbear's all on their own, with the remaining four animatronics being moved to their own place in 1983: Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. While Afton was happy about his success, he was still angry that his golden Bonnie was left out of the official Fredbear cartoon.
Over the years, Afton would start falling in love with robotics for giving him the ability to create life and make his dreams come true, eventually gaining an engineering degree. Eventually, he wanted to outrank Henry and prove himself as the better of the two.
Part 2: The Rise of Afton[]
As the amount of work he had made him unable to be there for his family, Afton designed a nanny cam system to monitor his kids around the neighborhood, including his youngest son's Fredbear plush toy "Psychic Friend Fredbear". Alongside this, he made Michael, his eldest child, babysit his brother, causing him to bully the child out of sadism and hatred. William was aware of this, but remained apathetic due to "kids being kids". On the child's birthday, Mike decided to play a prank on him by stuffing him inside Fredbear's mouth. However, the spring-locks inside the robot's mouth snapped shut and crushed the child's skull. As his son was moments away from dying in the hospital sometime after the bite, William promised to him he'll resurrect him and would then bury him in the woods next to his house.
Following this, William and Henry would install a new Security Puppet to watch over children and stop them from leaving the pizzeria. Meanwhile, Mike would start being haunted by his brother, now possessing Fredbear, now Golden Freddy. At the same time, Afton would start falling into alcoholism. One day, while drunk, he would let his drunken rage and hatred of Henry get the best of him, blaming him for his son's death. He decided to confront the man about this, but instead he found his daughter, Charlie, outside the restaurant. While originally planning to let her back in, he instead decided to show Henry what it feels like to lose something. He killed Charlie, laughing afterwards, deciding to hurt Henry the same way he was hurt. Following this, Fredbear's Family Diner would close down for good, with all the animatronics inside it being moved to Freddy's.
By 1985, Henry was still held back by his grief while Afton eventually surpassed him in engineering and creating his own company, Afton Robotics. He created an underground bunker to monitor his kids and illusion disks, simple disks that would alter a person's vision with sound itself. He would use them to torment Mike with illusions of nightmarish animatronics, which would traumatize him for life. Eventually, his wife Clara would divorce him due to no longer interacting with his family. In June 26th, William would go to Freddy's and murder five children, starting with Susie and ending with Cassidy, who he killed a bit too brutally due to losing his cool. He would then stuff their bodies inside the animatronic suits to keep them from being found. While William wasn't arrested due to lack of evidence, Henry knew he was responsible, kicking him out of the company and shutting down the pizzeria.
Two years later, Henry would open a new restaurant with new animatronics based on toys that they previously released, that had a facial recognition software. William was furious that he would open a Freddy's without him, it all being his idea, and would promise himself that he will come back each time a Freddy's opens. Managing to get hired as a day shift security guard, Afton would put on the golden Bonnie suit from the backstage and kill five more kids. While working at the location, he noticed the withered animatronics coming to life and walking around, following the Puppet's instructions. Now motivated by his own curiosity, Afton opened his own restaurant with his own animatronics: Circus Baby's Pizza World, which he would use to kidnap kids alive and experiment on them.
He would create the Funtime animatronics to kidnap children. Without Chica out of spite for being Henry's creation, and with two newcomers; Ballora and Baby, based on Clara and his daughter Elizabeth, respectively. However, Elizabeth would get too close to Baby and killed by the robot. After William closed the pizzeria, he noticed Baby's eye color change from blue to green, the same ones Elizabeth had. He decided he needs to go back to where it all began to find out what it means.
Once per night, William would go to Freddy's and destroy one of the animatronics, bringing their endoskeletons back to his underground bunker to experiment on them. He would melt the five endoskeletons to the point of turning into nothing but a pile of silvery goo, Remnant, before injecting Funtime Freddy with the remnants of the endoskeletons. However, the robot bear would be erratic and insane, compared to the more sophisticated Baby. Deciding it meant something, William went back to Freddy's to get more remnant, but was cornered by the ghosts of his victims. Panicking, Afton would put on the Spring Bonnie suit, hoping it would protect him. However, the spring-locks inside the suit would fail, crushing him, but he would remain alive through nothing but his own unwillingness to die. One day, he would be found by Henry and hoped he would save him. However, Henry would instead walk away and seal the room in which Afton died, becoming Springtrap.
Part 3: Burn Them All[]
While Afton spend years withering away in a backroom, Michael would start being worried about his father. Before his death, Afton instructed his son that, if he will be gone for too long, he should open his office and find an empty set of shelves. When he did, he found the entrance to Circus Baby's Entertainment & Rentals, the underground bunker where William spent his time in. As he started discovering more, Michael found out his father was a monstrous child murderer who wanted to bring the family back together via robots, and that Elizabeth was possessing Circus Baby. After four nights, Mike would have his flesh ripped out by the Scooper, being tricked into Baby (now Ennard) into being a skin suit. However, due to being injected with remnant, Michael would survive and spend the next thirty years trying to find William through working at various closed Freddy's restaurants, and then burn it down when he didn't find anything.
In 2023, some people opened up Fazbear Frights [sic], a horror attraction based on Freddy's. Mike was hired as the security guard, while William was found and brought as the main attraction. While Mike was trying to stop his father, the Puppet - who was also at the location - set free the souls of the main four animatronics as well as Mike's brother. Following this, Mike would set the building on fire, hoping it would kill Afton. However, he failed, and his father survived once again through sheer force of will.
Later that year, Henry would open up a new restaurant and instruct Mike with collecting animatronics from the back alley. Over time, Mike would find out what Henry is planning to end it all by burning them all to death. He helped him in this, bringing in Afton, the Puppet/Lefty, Elizabeth/Scrap Baby and Molten Freddy. The two would then set the pizzeria on fire, with Mike happily burning to death with everyone else... except Afton. Out of hatred, Cassidy would forcefully keep him alive, torturing him in his nightmares while, for the first time in his life, he begged for death. However, some time before this, William would insert a part of his soul into a circuit board, waiting for his chance to return.
Part 4: A Family Rebuilt[]
Following William's "death", his ex-wife Clara - due to being a shareholder and the sole survivor of the Aftons - would gain all copyrights and trademarks of both Afton Robotics and Fazbear Entertainment. With the new knowledge and re-opened wounds she gained, she decided it's time to do something William was never able to do: put the family back together. She would follow his footsteps, but go much further than he ever did. As part of this, she repaired the company's reputation via video games that made everyone forget about William's true evil and think of it as just a mystery to solve.
In 2035, after bringing back her youngest son via making a robotic recreation of him called Gregory, Clara moved on to William. Once the Mega PizzaPlex was built over the restaurant he died in, she went inside it and found his body, rotting away inside the rabbit suit. While still alive, William was completely lifeless, with his body being broken and him being brain-damaged and comatose following the fires he endured. Despite this, she still found the circuit board where William hid a part of his soul and uploaded it into a virtual reality game (now Glitchtrap) in the hopes he would merge with a player and gain a new body. However, the first attempt was unsuccessful, causing a man named Jeremy to commit suicide.
Eventually, Clara would find Vanessa, a woman that would be able to bring back both William and Elizabeth. Afton would successfully merge consciousness with her, during which he, Clara and Gregory would keep her in line so she would serve as a perfect recreation of Elizabeth. Eventually, Clara would hire Vanessa as the sole security guard at the PizzaPlex, while Mike's soul would possess the Glamrock Freddy animatronic. However, unbeknownst to everyone, Charlie's soul would return from the dead to stop the Aftons while the agony and hatred caused by Afton took a physical form as the Blob. Thanks to unknown circumstances, Gregory would start disobeying his parents before completely turning against them. He would destroy all three of the Glamrock animatronics, free Vanessa, set Glamrock Freddy/Mike loose and then burn down Afton's remains down in the Pizza Place while Clara would plan her revenge.
Personality[]
William is very deranged and unstable. He enjoys murdering children and never misses an opportunity to do so. He is also manipulative, tricking numerous into foolishly assisting him or ignoring him. He is also vengeful and has sought revenge against many, including his former partner Henry, going so far as to kill his daughter out of spite and a drunken rage. When confronted for his crimes, William shows no remorse and only cared about what would happen to him.
Despite this, William seemed to love his family. His youngest son's death is what caused his depression and he made it clear that he would always remember him. He was also distressed by Elizabeth's death and became remorseful for how his machine killed her.
He also wasn't always evil. Part 1 of the Ultimate Timeline shows that he was once a very passionate and polite individual who genuinely wanted to make families happy with his creations before his jealousy/admiration of Henry, coupled with the death of his son, drove him insane.
Trivia[]
- According to Ultimate Timeline, William was called Billy a lot when he was a kid.
- In preparations for how to explain William's past and behaviors, MatPat and his team used the real-life Chuck E. Cheese and details on the behavior of serial killers for research.
- It's unknown if William died at the end of Part 4, although it is implied due to Gregory "destroying" his body in the Pizza Place.
- Despite there being a Funtime Chica introduced in Pizzeria Simulator, she presumably wasn't created in this timeline, due to Afton's disdain over the character and her association with Henry.
