William Z. Foster (Kaiserreich)

William Zebulon Foster is a Major Antagonist in the Hearts of Iron IV mod, Kaiserreich. He is a radical labor organiser who serves as the Secretary of the Totalist section of the Socialist Party of America. And one of the two Totalist leaders for the Combined Syndicates of America (Alongside Earl Browder.)

Foster serves as a potential antagonist of North America's storyline (If the CSA wins the Second American Civil war, and Foster is elected), and can also serve as the villainous main protagonist of the Combined Syndicates of America.

Background[]

William Foster was born on 25 February 1881 in Taunton, Massachusetts to Elizabeth McLoughlin, an English Catholic textile mill worker, and James Foster, an Irish republican who fled to the United States after the failed Fenian Uprising of 1867. In 1901 at the age of nineteen, Foster joined the Socialist Party of America (SPA) and became a member of the party's Washington state branch, but soon left in the midst of a faction fight. In 1909 he joined the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and participated in a free speech fight in Spokane, Washington alongside Elizabeth Gurley Flynn.

Foster's study of the 1925 British Revolution led him to favor a more authoritarian and radical form of socialism, as he viewed the British Trade Union Congress to be a more effective syndicalist organization than the French CGT.

In Game[]

Should the Combined Syndicates of America win the Second American Civil War, Foster becomes one of the potential candidates, representing the socially ambitious Vanguardist syndicalists. Should Foster win, the Combined Syndicates of America will be transformed into the Union of Socialist American States. Once Foster takes power, he chooses to focus on eliminating his enemies, proposing some truly insane social reforms, and implementing his own economic policy.

Foster also attempts to legalize suicide. His insane argument says that the ethics of a syndicalist nation must be remade to accommodate the wishes of Americans with hard lives, and how they must phase out the old traditions. Protesters and conspiracy theorists point out that it is far more likely that Foster legalized suicide because he wanted to excuse mysterious deaths and legalize murders that look like suicides. Foster's events involve him trying to institute a program of government-organized child labor on farmland and ranches. He even proposes to forcibly take the children from "stubborn" worker families for their own good.

Trivia[]

Foster's whole child kidnapping stuff is something he never proposed OTL, most likely extrapolated from a much more benign proposal he wrote for unions to organize daycare for children whose parents are currently out striking.
