Winston Fitzgerald is the main protagonist of the story A Pitch Off The Old Block.
He is a Canadian man who, at age 14, murdered a 17 year old girl named Victoria Merkins.
Biography[]
Winston Fitzgerald was born on March 20, 1973 in Ontario, Canada to Warren and Yelena. He had a older sister named Nora, who was 7 years older than him.
Winston was a loner throughout his childhood, and was often bullied by other kids. He also became mentally ill since he was 8 years old.
When junior high school started in 1985, things became worse for him as he was being bullied almost every day, especially by a boy named David Cannon.
However, when Grade 9 started on September 1987, Winston became aggresive towards his fellow classmates and staff members, such as threatening to kill a teacher, beating up David and including a incident in which certain students didn't allow Winston to eat lunch with them, in which Winston reacted by throwing one of them out of their seat and even trying to stab one of them.
Murder[]
On December 21, 1987, Winston entered a winter camp uninvited and began annoying the fellow campers. At one point, the scoutmaster kicked him out.
On the way back home, Winston saw a girl (Vicky), talking to one of her friends, Winston, who had recently started to believe that he should kill someone in order to save his own life on December 31, decided to follow Vicky to her home.
After that, he went home and began planning to kill Vicky.
At 6:30 PM, Winston sent a note in Vicky's mail, stating that one of her friends had went missing but that he had found her and told her to go to a certain wooded area to find her. Vicky read that note, and drove her car to that wooded area.
Once she was there, Winston, who was hiding behind some bushes, threw a rock at Vicky's head. He then began stabbing her multiple times while hitting her as well. At one point, he grabbed the rock he used earlier and began hitting Vicky's head with it until she stopped moving. He then left and decided to have a sleepover at a friend's house.
At one point, Vicky's dad knocked at the door, along with Vicky's friend, and asked them to help them find Vicky. They agreed and went into searching for her.
At 11:00 PM, Vicky was found by her father.
Winston was questioned by the police officers, but he declined any involvement.
Confession[]
1 week later, on December 28, 1987, Winston's family began asking him if he had seen anything suspicious that day. (They had been asking him this since the day after the murder).
At one point, Winston looked at his mother, Yelena and confessed that he had killed Vicky.
Yelena started screaming and asked him why did he do it, and Winston told her "i don't know, i don't know" and began crying.
Trial and institutionalization[]
Winston's trial began on June 1988. His lawyer, Henry Minster, argued that Winston had childhood schizophrenia and believed that if he killed Vicky, he would save himself from dying before New Year.
On July 19, 1988, Winston was found not criminally responsible and institutionalized.
When Winston was in a psychiatric hospital, he began reading the bible and finished it on February 17, 1993.
Winston has since felt deep remorse for murdering Vicky, and hoped that her parents could one day forgive him. He has also apologized to Vicky in interviews.
Release[]
On April 7, 2024, Winston had a parole board to see if he could be released back to society.
In that hearing, Winston revealed that he had been engaged with a lawyer that he met on Facebook for a few years and that he planned on moving to Toronto with her if he was released.
On April 9, 2024, Winston was granted parole.
On June 18, 2024, Winston was released from the psychiatric hospital after 36 years.
